Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1910.
Application led January 5, 1910. Serial No. 536,470.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'we, HUGH N.. NioirmeA son, acitizen ofthe United States of America, and WILLIAM J. CoUsms, a subject-of the King of Great Britain, tiae, in the countyof Oakland and State of have invented new and useful of which-the following is a specification.
This f invention relates to film mending devices, andhas for an .object-to provide a device of :this character which will be constructed withraview'of enabling the operas.
tor of a moving icture' machine to conveniently and" quie ly mend a` broken film, means being rovided whereby the film perorations. wal f be spaced" from each other at the sides of theqlolnt formed by the bro en endsto accurate he drivin .cogs.,
In t e drawin forming a portion of this specification an like numerals of y receive the teeth, of

Fig. 2 isa front ele vation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view.. Fig. 4 is a detail transverse section taken through the device. Fig.'5 is a detail erspective View of one of the movable fi) supporting members. Fig. '6 is a detail plan view of vthe knife carrier.
Our improved hlm-monding device com sists of a. xed supportwhioh is preferably in the form of atable 1 which is provided with spaced guide members 2 and 3.' The table supports companion film-retaining and supporting means which consists of com` panion' members 4 and 5. The member e is movable on the table toward or away from A This member is provided with an outwardly extending pin 6 which extends through an eiongated longitudinally exterminioa sist if in the guide member@ of d ii 2b the table. it will as described the member d to be moved on the table so that its inner edge wiii ebutthe inner edge of the member The member is formed adjacent its side edges with vertical pins be seenthat the construc- 8 which are 'adopted to receivelthe usual perforations formed in iilms of the ordinary type. The member 4 is provided with vertically extending pins 9 which are disposed 'in iine'with the S upon-the mem er 5 upon -t residing at Ponv in the foregoing permitse members hand 5 which* are located nearest the inner abutting ed es of the said-members are so arrangedt at.

The knives w13 are disposed i extending slots 14 which. areli table. A- spring. ,15 connects t the head V12 of the knife carri hold the Fig. 1 of the drawing. The table has hingedly-moiitedthereon 1a pressing-head` l16 which 'may 17 which may be grasped by` the hand of the operator to move the carrier against thetension of the spring The table is corners wlth a suitable is mounted a brush 19. In operation when it is desired to mend a broken film the severedends of the film are mounted u on the members 4 and 5 of the table and t e portions of the film which the inner edge of the member 4 are cut off bythe knives 13. One of the knives 13 is located substantially fiush with the inner edge of the member 5. The film end which is mounted on the member 5 can be adjusted 95 on the tablev so that the portion beyond the inner edge of the said member can be acourately severed by the knife 13 adjcent tov the said member. The construction de-` scribed is such conveniently s liced to edectively connect the broken en s, the construction also permittin the operator to so mend the film that t e erforations at the sides ofl the splice will) equal the distances rforations. ln lroken lm is again run chine the -spliced portion between the remaining this manner when thel tion. The l knife-carryin -.memberis provided with a; 80 -suitable. hand e glue-pot 18 in which 85 are exposed beyond that the broken film can be i0@ be spaced from each other to through the maof the film can be accurately engagd with the .driving cogs s of the filmv beyond the inner faces of tbe members il and 5 bave severed from tbe rem portions of the Elm tbe member fr can be moved Aupon tbe table until it abats tbe member 5. The meeting ends of tbe iim can then be treated with a suitable nement, after which the ressing bead 16 can be moved against the nlm as will be understood.
I/Ve claim s* l l. e., nlm mending device including relatively movable tables, means carried by each or" tbe tables'for iinedly positioning tbe i'ilm ends thereon7 means for limiting the movement o the tables toward each other -to arrange the film ends in such relative positions as to insure a uniform continuity oi the perforations `across the break in the film.
2. A ilm-mending device comprising a table, a stationary member mounted on the table, a movable member mounted upon the table, a knife carrier having a pair oi' knives vadapted to be moved transversely of the adaptel movement transversely of tbe table at points inwardly of the inner ends of the ilm-supporting means.
4. A lm-mending device comprising a fixed member, a movable member adapted to be moved toward o1' away from the fixed member, pins extending from the members adapted to" be engaged inthe perorations of 'the film, and knives movable between the said members.
5. A filmt-monding device comprising a table, film-supporting means for supporting the broken ends of the' film, trimming knives movable transversely of the table, and a pressin T bead adapted to be pressed against' the sai film-supporting means.
6. A film mending device includingjy relaf tively movable members, means carried by each of the members for ixedly positioning the film ends thereon, and means for limiting the movement of the members toward each other to arrange the film ends in such relative positions as to insure a uniform continuity and spacing of lthe perforations across the break in the film.
In testimony whereof we a'liix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
