LOOSE-SHEET BOOK OR BINDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR J AY, merchant, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at 16 Albion Buildings, Aldersgate Street, London, E. (1, Eng land, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose- Sheet Books or Binders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in the binding together of the sheets of loose sheet books such as ledgers, note books, account books, and the like, and has for its object to provide means for the ready removal of one or more sheets and replacing them or others, in substitution therefor, firmly and securely in position between the covers of the book or the like. For this purpose I fix to the inside of the back board forming part of the cover to which the sheets are to be secured, a strip or bar of metal, or other suitable material, to which are secured, by screwing or otherwise, at convenient intervals '2. suitable number of metal pins or rods of circular or other section. These pins or rods are formed at their free ends with slots or recess-es for receiving a bar or strip for locking the cover and preventing the removal of the sheets when the upper cover of the book is closed. Or instead of forming the pins or rods of a single solid piece they may be made with a knuckle or other joint about their center for enabling the book to lie, when open, in as flat and even position as possible, or the pins or rods may be curved for the same purpose. The front or upper cover is also provided with a strip or bar of metal formed with holes or recesses corresponding in number and position with the pins or rods. In contact with the said strip or bar is a sliding locking bar formed with recesses for engaging with the pins or bolts when requiring to unlock the said locking bar for the purpose of removing any of the sheets from the book, the said bar engaging with the slots or recesses in the pins or rods when the parts are in their locked position, for which purpose the bar is moved endwise by means of a lock operated by a key in either direction. The sliding bar is kept in position by a second bar or strip between which and the first named one it slides for looking or unlocking the same. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same partly in section with the sliding bar in its locked position, and Fig. 3 is a similar view with the sliding bar in its unlocked position. Fig. 4 is a section of the back of the book at right angles to Fig. 1 and a portion of the covers in their closed position, and Fig. 5 is a section of the back of the book with the covers in their extended or open position.

f is the locking bar fitted to the bar 6 so as to slide between the same and the second bar or strip 9 fixed to the cover a. The bar 7 engages with recesses cZ in the upper ends of the pins d when in its locked position, as shown in Fig. 2, and is formed with recesses f for engaging with the pins (i, when in its unlocked position, as shown in Fig. 3, thus enabling the cover a to be opened, as shown in Fig. 5, and leaving the pins (Z free for the insertion or withdrawal of the leaves of the book in the usual manner. The bar f may be operated in any suitable manner as for instance by means of a key 71. causing the same to slide backward and forward for engaging it with or disengaging it from the pins d, thus looking or unlocking the cover a.

The back I), which may be made of wood, is fixed to the portions of the covers carrying the strips or bars, by joints or hinges I) while the covers themselves are joined to the said portions by the joints or hinges I) thus enabling the covers to be readily opened out or closed.

Having now fully described the nature of my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with the covers, of posts secured to and upstanding from one of the covers, the other cover having apertures formed therein to receive the posts, a slide carried: by v and i adapted i to be moved to engage projections onthe posts for vthe combination of a cover, upstanding posts carried thereby, said posts having slots formed therein, a second cover, and means carried thereby having portions cut away to permit of the passage of the posts therethrough, said means being adapted to be moved into said slots to lock the cover, in position said means having a recess formed therein, and a rotatably secured member having a portion extending into said recess, the rotation of said member serving to move the means and lock them in adjusted posi tion. V

3. In a binder, the combination with binding posts having transverse slots formed therein near the upper end thereof, of a cover section having apertures formed therein to permit the passage of the poststherethrough, a straight strip slidably mounted in the cover, said strip having notches formed therein and adapted to coincide with the apertures'in the cover, said strip also having a recess formed in one end thereof, and. a key member adapted to be engaged in the recess, said key serving to reciprocall move the strip to bring saidinotches out o alinement with the apertures, said movement of the strip serving to bring the straight portion thereof into the slots in the posts,

whereby the cover is locked in position thereon and the further movement of the key member locking the strip immovably in position. 7 4. In a device of the character described, the combination with the back, of a pair of intermediate sections hin edly secured thereto, cover sections hinge ly securedto the intermediate sections, posts secured to and projecting u ward from one of the intermediate sections, said posts having slots formed in one side near their upper ends, the other intermediate section havin a series of apertures formed therein a apted to receive the ends of the posts, a slide mounted in said section having semi-circular recessesvformed therein adapted to coincide with the apertures to permit the passage of the posts therethrough, said slide having a recess with squared ends formed in one end thereof, and a locking member secured within'the section and having its end tprojectin into said recess, said member being adapted to be rotated, the rotation thereof serving to move the slide into position where the edge thereof will fit in the slots in the posts to prevent their withdrawal from the apertures, and the further rotation of the member serving to move it into position where it will bear against the end of the recess and prevent the movement of the slide, thus locking the various parts in position.
