J TWM WITNESSES I v INVENTOH 1 3 0654 57, Ear/ 5Q WWI 5 CHARLES A. WAGNER, OF EAST PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
GUSPIDOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1910.
Application filed February 24, 1910. Serial No. 545,704.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. VVAGNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at East Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ouspidors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had there in to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to cuspidors, and more particularly to that type adapted to retain the contents thereof when accidentally tilted or upset.
The object of my invention is to provide a sanitary cuspidor with a detachable funnel shaped mouth-piece that can be easily and quickly moved when it is desired to clean the cuspidor.
I attain the above object by a cuspidor that is simple in construction, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and the detail construction entering into my invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed, as to the size, shape and manner of assemblage without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cuspidor, partly broken away and partly in vertical section, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of the cuspidor illustrating a clasp in a closed position, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, showing the clasp in an open position.
In the accompanying drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes a pot shaped receptacle having the upper edge thereof provided with a peripheral horizontal flange 2 and suitably mounted upon this flange is an annular washer or gasket 3, preferably made of rubber or other resilient material.
In connection with the pot shaped receptacle 1 I use a funnel shaped mouth-piece or lid, comprising a funnel 4: having the lower end thereof flared, as at 5, while the upper edge of the funnel is provided with a horizontal flan e 6 terminating in a vertical reamed collar I, the upper edge of the collar being reamed or bent to provide a smooth upper edge for the cuspidor, also to enhance the general appearance of the same. The
upper end of the funnel 1 is of a diameter corresponding to the upper end of the receptacle 1 and is adapted to fit in said receptacle with the flared end 5 thereof in proximity to the bottom of the receptacle, while the horizontal flange 6 rests upon the washer or gasket 3 with the outer wall of the collar 7 in vertical alinement with the outer edges of the washer or gasket and the flange 2.
Diametrically opposed sides of the collar 7 adjacent to the flange 6 are provided with. outwardly extending pins or hooks 8 and adapted to engage these pins or hooks are links 9 pivotally carried by clasps movably mounted in bearings 10 provided therefor upon the sides of the receptacle 1 adjacent to the flange 2. The clasps as well as the links 9 are preferably made of wire, the clasp comprising a single piece of wire bent to provide a loop 11, and eyelets 12 with the ends of the piece of wire extending into the bearing 10. The link 9 is made of a single piece of wire with the ends thereof bent, as at 13 to engage in the eyelets 12 of the clasp. The ends of the clasp are bent at approxi mately right angles to the loop 11 thereof, whereby said clasp will have a leverage action in locking the link 9 in engagement with one of the pins or hooks 8. The means of fastening the funnel shaped mouthpiece or lid upon the upper edges of the receptacle 1 is adapted to form a non-leakable connection between the flanges 2 and 6, and at the same time permit of the mouth-piece being quickly removed from the receptacle when it is desired to clean the same. The arrangement of the funnel shaped mouth-piece within the receptacle 1 provides an annular compartment 14 and into this compartment the contents of the cuspidor are adapted to flow when the receptacle is accidentally tilted or upset, thus preventing the contents from being spilled and injuring the floor or support upon which the cuspidor is placed.
The cuspidor is made of light and. durable metal and can be finished according to ones esthetic tastes, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the cuspidor can be made of various kinds of material and of various sizes.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
In a cuspidor, a receptacle havingthe upper edge thereof provided with a peripheral flange, a washer or gasket mounted upon said flange, a funnel shaped mouth-piece adapted to rest upon said Washer or gasket, said funnel shaped mouth-piece comprising a funnel adapted to extend into said receptacle and have the lower end thereof flared in proximity to the bot-tom of said receptacle, a horizontal flange carried by the upper end of said funnel and adapted to rest upon said asher or gasket, a turned collar carried by said flange, and means at the opposite sides of said receptacle and adapted to engage said collar and retain said funnel shaped mouth-piece upon said receptacle, said means including clasps carried by said receptacle and adapted to locksaid funnel shaped mouth-piece upon the Washer or gasket thereof, substantially as, and for the purpose herein described.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
