XWITNESSES:
Patented Aug.23, 1910.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN B. PATCH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORfBY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO
WILLIAM H. MINER, OF CHICAGO, ILLIN OISL oAa-nooa FASTENER.
To all whom it, may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN B. PATCH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Door Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car door seal fasteners.
My invention consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and inthe novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described and more particularly specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of refrigerator car doors provided withmy improved invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing the doors closed and sealed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the members of the fastener disengaged and Fig. I is a de tail vertical section of the staple member of the fastener.
In the drawing, A represents a portion of a refrigerator car, B B the refrigerator car doors, C, the hinges thereof, D the operating shaft for opening and closing the refrigerator car doors, E the keepers secured to the car frame or upper and lower sillsof the door frame, F the hasp lever member'of the fastener, G the staple member of the fastener, H the swinging latch or look on the ptaple member and K the sealing strip or oop.
The door closing and opening shaft D and cooperating keeper E may be of any suitable kind or construction adapted to open and close the refrigerator car doors. The operating shaft D is preferably journaled in suitable brackets D on one of the doors tightly closed and to force the doors open, I
when theoperating shaftis turned first in one direction to close the doors and then in the opposite direction to force them open. The operating shaft D is also provided with a short lever arm 03 to which the hasp lever F is hinged by a pin or rivet (1 so that the Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug,' 23, 1910, Application'filed October 30, 1909. Serial No. 525,431.
hasp lever may swing down out of the way parallel to the operating shaft when the doors are unlocked or unfastened.
The hasp lever F is preferably furnished with jaws f fitting each side the short lever arm d of the operating shaft D, and it is provided with a slot f to receive thestaple 'G when the doors are forced closed by turning the operating shaft D with the has lever. The hasp lever F is provided pre erably with a bent handle f at its'end.
The staple member G, if the car is furnished with two doorsclosing together" as illustrated in the drawing, is secured to the outer face of one of the doors by suitable bolts 9 extending through the face plate g of the staple member. The staple member G is provided with a locking recess 9 to receive the'curved end 71. of the swinging 'lock or latch H which is'pivotally secured to the staple member G, preferably by an integral hollow pivot stud g on the staple member, the outer end of which is upset or riveted over the swinging latch or lock H to pivotally' secure the lock to the staple member. The locking shoulders g formed on the staple member G by the recess g therein serves to securely hold the hasp lever in place on the staple G and prevents strain from coming upon the sealing wire or strip K which is inserted through suitable registering openings 9 in the staple and k in the swinging latch orlock H.
The seallstrip or loop K is furnished with the customary seal device or rivet K of soft metal and adaptedto be upset with the sealing punch so as to prevent tampering of the lock or fastener without detection.
' I claim p 1. A refrigerator car door fastener comprising an upright shaft mounted on the door and having crank arms at its ends. keepers on the door frame adapted to engage said orank arms, a hasp lever secured to said rotary shaft and having a slot, a staple member having a locking shoulder and provided with a swinging latch pivoted thereto directly above said shoulder and adapted .to engage said locking shoulder and hold the hasp lever in place on the staple, substantially as specifie 2; The combination with a door frame having keepers secured thereto, of a door having an operating shaft furnished with said staple and a swinging latch for holding crank arms engaging said keepers and pr 0- the hasp' lever in engagement with the staple,
vided with ,an operating arm, a hasp lever substantially as spec' ed. secured to said operating arm, a sta 1e mem- CALVIN B. PATCH. her having a sta 1e and provide with a Witnesses: recess to receive t e free end of a swinging PEARL ABRAMS, latch pivoted to said staple member above ESTHER ABRAMS.
