QW1A22.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ERVIN WALRATI-I and FRANK W. AUSTIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Screens; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference'marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in screen apparatus for windows, the object in view being to produce a simple and efiicient device of this nature which may be so adjusted as to close the opening in the frame of a window as the sash is opened.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
We illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view showing a window frame and sash equipped with our improved screen apparatus and illustrating the window as closed. Fig. 2 is a. similar view showing the window open. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view, and Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of a window and B the sash adapted to slide in the usual grooves formed in the adjacent faces of the casing. Angle plates, designated by letter B, are fastened to the adjacent faces of the frame and are provided for the purpose of preventing insects passing by the screen when the window is opened. Rods, designated by letter C, engage at their lower ends holes D formed in the sill of the window positioned adjacent to the side walls of the frame. A rod E is provided with apertures E in its ends Specification of Letters Patent.

adapted to receive the vertical rods 0 and to which rod E the bottom of the screen F is fastened, the opposite sides of the screen being turned upon themselves and hemmed and adapted to receive the rods 0. The rod E is held in a fixed position by means of collars G upon the rods C. A second and horizontally disposed rod H is provided with apertures H in its ends for the reception of the rods (1 upon which said rod H is adapted to be guided as the latter rises and lowers with the window. The upper portion of the screen is also turned upon itself and hemmed and adapted to receive the rod H.
Bracket members K are fastened to the sash B and adapted to engage the rods H. Fastened to the faces of the metallic angle strips are the bracket members Q which are bent to form cylindrical outlined portions Q, each of which is transversely slotted as at It for the reception of the upper flattened ends G of said rods C. Each of the slots formed in said bracket members is somewhat widened and adapted to receive a cotter pin S which may be inserted in said slot and allowed to expand in the widened portion thereof, thus serving as a means for securely holding the rods C in place.
The operation of our apparatus will be readily understood and is as follows l/Vhen the screen apparatus is applied to the window in the manner shown and as the window is opened any distance, the screen will be extended to close the opening incident to the raising or lowering of the sash accordingly as the screen is fastened to the upper or lower sash of a window. By the provision of the angle plates fastened to the adjacent faces of the window frame, insects will be prevented from entering the screened opening by passing about the edges of the screen.
What we claim to be new is In combination with the frame of a window and sash therein, vertical rods engag' posed rod having eyes in the ends receiving our signatures in the presence of two Wit-- the vertloal rods, a statlonary rod conneetnesses.
