To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMMA C. HAMPTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Robe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention is an improvement in bed robes for invalids, such robes, for example, as night gowns, chemises and night shirts, and has in View a garment which can be kept clean and sanitary when the patient has involuntary evacuations, and which can be readily put on and taken off a person in a recumbent position, the garment opening at the front from the top down to a point at or near the waistline, and opening at the back from the bottom to a point between the waist and shoulders, above and below which point the garment at the front and back respectively is inseparable, whereby the danger of the two portions or side sections of the garment pulling apart, either when the garment is being applied to the body or separated under the patient, is avoided; also obviating the use of uncomfortable fastening devices under the shoulders.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a front view of a chemise constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same; Fig. 3 is a front view of a night gown constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 4 is a rear View of the same.

The bed robe has the same general form as the conventional chemise, night gown or night shirt, being of a construction and material to be comfortable to the body of the patient. The robe 5, as shown in the drawing figures, opens at the front from the top downwardly to a point at or near the waistline, as indicated at 6, the edges of the opening portion being detachably connected by suitable fastenings, such as the buttons 7. At the back, the robe opens from the bottom to a point above the waistline and below the shoulders, as indicated at 8, the edges of the opening portion being detachably connected together by buttons or other suitable fastenings 9, if desired. These portions of the garment at the front below the opening portion 6, and at the back above the opening portion 8, are inseparably connected so that the front lower portion of the body is kept covered and the two side portions or sections of the garment cannot be accidently detached, as when applying the garment to the body or spreading the garment open at the back, as preparatory to an evacuation of the patient.

The yoke or opening in the neck of the robe is made sufliciently large to readily pass over the head when the robe is fastened at the front, so that when the robe is gathered into ring form to be passed over the patients head, the front of the garment will not be drawn to the back and thus make it diflicult to pass the arms of the patient into the sleeves.

The garment is put on the patient by gathering the upper portion of the garment in the hand from the upper end of the opening in the back to the neck; then slipping it over the patients head and drawing it down in the back. The garment is then in place and needs no hooking, buttoning or strapping, since the unopened part of the back serves to hold the garment in place about the patients body.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

An invalids bed robe having a neck opening, and opening at the front from the neck opening downwardly to a point at or near the waistline, and opening at the back from the bottom to a point above the waistline and below the shoulders, below which point at the front and above which point at the back the garment is inseparable, the neck opening being sufficiently large for the passage of the head when the opening at the front of the garment is closed.
