To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, KATE OR'lT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sanborn, in the county of Niagara, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to heaters for the sick room or for general household pur poses, and may be used in connection with oil lamps for enabling light cooking to be performed without the aid of a stove.

The object of this invention is to construct a heater which may be applied to lamps having chimneys varying in height and further, to engage the support upon which the oil lamp rests so that a cooking utensil of considerable weight may be supported upon the heater without danger of fracturing the lamp or chimney.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a heater constructed in accordance with my invention applied to an ordinary oil lamp. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the heater showing the same applied to a lamp having a taller chimney than that shown in Fig. 1. The reference character 10 designates a ring the central aperture of which receives the direct radiation of the heat and upon which may be placed a cooking utensil desired to be heated. In order to render this ring applicable to different heights of lamp chimneys, I attach a plurality of resilient pendent legs 11 to said ring, preferably three in number, these legs being provided at their upper ends with inwardly bent extremities 12 through which and the ring 10 rivets 13 are passed to rigidly secure the parts together. The lower extremities of the legs are preferably rounded so that the heater may rest upon the support on which the lamp is placed without marring or otherwise mutilating the same. It is clear that the more these legs are inclined from the perpendicular, the nearer to the lamp support will the ring 10 be, and that the nearer the legs approach the perpendicular, the farther will the ring 10 be spaced from the lamp support. For holding the legs in position and at the same time permitting their inclination from the perpendicular, I provide a ring 14: having a plurality of spaced openings 15 through which the legs 11 are loosely inserted. It is clear by elevating this ring 145, the free ends of the legs will be spread apart so that the legs Will be inclined considerably from the perpendicular, and by lowering the ring 14 upon the legs, the free ends of the legs will be drawn together whereby the legs assume a position approximating the perpendicular as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The legs are sufficiently resilient to admit of the ring 14 being manipulated as above described, while at the same time hold the legs against accidental spreading when the weight of the receptacle to be heated comes upon them.

It is obvious that a heater constructed as above described may be applied to chimneys varying in height so that the ring 10 upon which the cooking utensil is supported may be spaced in close proximity to the top edge of the lamp chimney so that the cooking utensil will receive the direct radiation from the lamp.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the construction and operation of my invention will be easily understood, without a more extended explanation, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claim.

What is claimed is In a heater, a supporting element, resilient pendent legs attached thereto, and a slide ring mounted for longitudinal movement on the legs and operating to draw together and space apart said legs whereby to move said supporting element vertically.
