ama- 'IMPROVEMEN'Ii IN AXLES, FOR: CRRIAG-ES.
The Schedule referre to in these Letter-s Patent and making part of the aauue.
To all whom,iti/may'concern e Be itv known that I, SAMUEL Folmns'rnn, of the city and county'of Allegheny;v and State of Pennsylvana, have 'invented a new and useful Improvernent in Spindle for Oarriage-Axles ;4 and I do hereby de-. clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to t-he accompa-` nying drawing, and to `the letters of reference inarked thereon.. i, f
, 'The nature of Lny iuventiou consists in so constructing the spindle of a carriageeaxle, that it shall fit Vn'eatly, and closely to the npper andilower sides of the axle, and leave, on the back and front sides ofv it, an oilcharnher;` and also, in providing the spindle with a clip-flange 4for bracing'and cla'ruping the wood and spindle to the axle. i
`To enable others skilled'in the art to make and'use myyinvention, I will rproceed. to describe its construction andioperation. i
i In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of my `specification- V v Figure 1 is a side viewofemy improvement in spindle for carriage-axl'es. i
' Figure 2 is a longitudinaltsection of the same. Figure 3 is a transversc section of the same, when cut through at line y, fig. 1.
Figure 4 is an end view of 'axle and spindle. In the accompauying drawin --v f i A-represents thev spindle, which may be made of cast-iron or steel, and is cored out so asl to fit neatly and closely to the upper and lower sides of the axle B,`as shovmat o, in figs. 2,3, and 4. By thus fittilng the axle' in the spindle, it is not liable tovbreak' oli' at the inner end-of the spindle, or in the spindle, for it will have no vertical motion. The innerfan'd outer ends of the opening in the spindle are fi'tted neatly and closely-to the axle B, for the p'urpose of preventing any side motion of the spindle on the axle. On the front and back sides of the axle B, are oilchambers w, which communicate with the interior of the hub of the \fvheel of the carriage, through the mediur of the openin'gs i.
i The charnbers x are filled with oil through the openings sin the endof the spindle'A.
On the inner end of the spindle is a flange, e, which is provided with openings for the ends of the clip' f.
By means of this flange e and the clip f, the wood part O, of the axle, and the spindleA may be secured, 'bracechaud clamped firmly to the ironpart B, of the axle.
, .l represents a screw-nut, which is used for the purpose o f preventing any motion endways of the ,spindle on the axle. By illing the oilvchambers :ze-,with oil, the spindle B will'always be properly lnb'ricated- Having thus described` the nature, construction, and operation of myimprovement in spindle forv oarrage= axles,
\What I claim as of my invent-ion, is
Providing the spindle A with the clip-fiange e, and so constructing the bore of the spindle that it Will fit neatly and closely to the upper and lower sides of `the axle B, and leave oil-Chambers a: on the back and front sides of it, as herein described, and for the purpose set forth. 1 i
