To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Trinononn J. GAnisio, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Shuttle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invent-ion relates to shuttles, my more particular purpose being to provide the same with means for cutting a filling thread by a positive chopping motion, this motion being controllable by the tension of the filling thread and independent of the ejection of the filling carrier from the shuttle.
My invention further comprehends improved mechanism 4for enabling the tension of the filling thread to sever said thread with certainty.
My present application is closely associated with another application just filed and containing broader claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of refu erence indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow, through my improved shuttle, showing the filling carrier or bobbin, and also showing in part my improved cutting mechanism; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the mechanism appearing in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail showing in side elevation the casing carried by the bobbin andcontaining a sliding blade for severing the thread; Fig. 4 is a detail showing the mechanism in Fig. 3, as the same would appear to an observer located at the left of said figure; and Fig. 5 is a detail showing the mechanism appearing in Fig. 3 as the same would be seen by an observer stationed at the right of Fig. 3.
The shuttle is shown at G and is provided with an opening 7 in which is placed the filling carrier 9 having a filling thread 8 wound upon it so as to form a bobbin. The shuttle is further provided with a slot 10 merging into the opening 7 for facilitating the loading of the shuttle and the removal therefrom of the filling carrier. At 11 is a bearing provided with spring arms 12 each having generally a C shape, these arms being sprunginto the shuttle for the purpose of holding the bearing 11. is mounted within the shuttle and presses against the bearing 11 so as to hold the same in position with a proper degree of firmness.
The opening 7 is partially bounded by a partition 13 having a substantially conical hole 14 extending through it. rlhis hole merges into a slot 15 having a shallow portion 16. springs 17 and engaging the latter are pressure plates 18 which are forced toward each other automatically by the action of the springs.
A casing 19, as will be seen from Figs. 2,
-3 and 4, has generally the form of a bar, the
latter being of substantially square cross section and being provided with a passage 2() of general cylindrical form. The casing 19 is further provided with a lug 22 integral with it, this lug having holes 23 through which extend screws 24 for the purpose of holding the casing rigidly in position.
The shuttle G is provided, in the slot 15, with a step 25, this step affording a bearing for the lug` 22 and into which the screws 24 extend. The passage 20 is provided with an enlarged portion 20'1 having a general cylindrical form and mounted within the portion 20a is a spiral spring 26 which rests against an annular shoulder 20". Mounted within the casing 19 is a plunger 27 provided with a disk-like head 28, the spiral spring 2G engaging this head.
A blade 29 is by aid of pins 30 secured rmly to the plunger 27 which is slotted for this purpose. The tension of the spring 26 tends to force the plunger 27 to the left according to Fig. 1, but by compressing the spring 2G the plunger may be forced to the right according to this figure.
The casing 19 is provided with slots 30, 31 which are substantially in registry with each other. An eye 32 is mounted rigidly upon the head 28 and extends out through the slot 30% Opposite the eye 32 is a lug 33, also mounted rigidly upon the head 28, and slidable within the slot 31. The casing 19 is provided with eyelets 34, 35 in registry with each other. Another eyelet 3G extends through one wall of the shuttle and is in alinement with the eyelets 34, 35.
The springs 17 and pressure plates 18 are mounted in an opening 37 which is separated from the opening 15 by a bridge 38. A tube 39, made preferably of porcelain, ex-
Mounted within the slot 15 arey tends obliquely through the bridge 38. At is shown a portion of the filling thread which is gradually unwound from the bobbin. The casing 19 is further provided with a slot 41 upon its under side for enabling the operator to observe to better advantage the condition of the blade 29.
The operation of my device is as follows: The portion 40 of the filling thread is led between the pressure plates 18 and through the tube 39 and eyelets 34, 35, being thus extended directly across the cylindrical passage 20. The thread is neXt led through the eye 32 and out through the eyelet 36, being conne'cted in the usual manner to begin work. This being done, the shuttle is placed in the machine and employed in substantially the usual manner. As the weaving proceeds the filling thread is gradually paid out of the shuttle, the tension of the thread being controllable by its friction relatively to the pressure plates 18, the tube 19, the various eyelets 34, 35, 36, and the eye 32. The spring 26 is of such strength and the pressure of the pressure plates 18 is so adjusted, that the filling thread Li0 normally maintains a proper degree of tension for the weaving process. If, however, for any reason, the filling thread fails to readily unwind from the bobbin so that the thread acquires an undue tension, it pulls the eye 32 to the right according to Fig. 1. In doing this it causes the plunger 27 to slide to the right, and the blade 29 thereupon is brought into engagement with that portion of the filling thread extending through the casing 19 from the eyelet 34 to the eyelet 35. The blade 29 thus severs the filling thread and prevents the latter from puckering the cloth or causing Ythe latter to warp; o r, in some instances, prevents the filling thread from breaking innumerable warp threads.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: Y y
1. In a shuttle, the combination of a body portion, a bobbin carried thereby, a cutting member carried by said body portion and movable relatively to the latter, means for directing a filling thread partially within the path of travel of said cutting member,
and means controllable by tension of said thread for actuating said cutting member.
2. The combination of a shuttle, a bobbin carried thereby for the purpose of paying out thread, a casing carried by said shuttle, a plunger slidably mounted within said casing, a cutting blade secured to said plunger and movable therewith, a spring engaging said casing and said plunger for the purpose of normally maintaining said plunger in a predetermined position relatively to said casing, and means for guiding said thread through said casing at a point adjacent to said cutting blade and within the path of the latter for enabling the tension of said thread to actuate said plunger.
3. In a shuttle, the combination of the shuttle-body, and means, arranged in the shuttle-body, for severing the thread upon abnormal resistance being opposed within the shuttle-body to the discharge of the thread therefrom, comprising a thread-guide, another and elastically controlled and movable thread-guide normally held out of alinement with the first thread-guide, and a; j
movable cutter controlled by the movable thread-guide and adapted to sever the thread upon movement of' said movable threadguide, substantially as described.
4:. In a shuttle, the combination of the u shuttle-body, and means, arranged .in the shuttle body, for severing the thread upon abnormal resistance being opposed within the shuttle-body to the discharge of the thread therefrom, comprising two spacedi thread-guides, another and elastically controlled thread-guide movable in a plane eX- tending between the first two thread-guides and normally held out of alinement with them, and a movable cutter controlled by the movable thread-guide and adapted to sever the thread upon movement of said movable thread-guide, substantially as described.
