DISINFECTING GARBAGE-PAIL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID GOLDMAN and Hinsori H. GoLmmN, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disinfecting Garbage-Pails, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates more specifically to that class of garbage receptacles or buckets used for depositing all kinds of kitchen waste in till it is removed from the premises. Under the system of collection in use in many cities and towns, the garbage becomes offensive before it is removed and moreover the garbage vessel causes great annoyance by attracting the flies.
Our invention is designed to cope with both evils and to this end we have invented a garbage receptacle which is provided with self contained means for keeping it in a sanitary condition on the outside as well as on the inside all as more fully hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a garbage can embodying our invention; Fig. 2 is a detailed enlarged section of the disinfecting cartridge; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the cover detached.
A is the body of the receptacle preferably made of sheet metal.
B is a perforated false bottom removably supported therein, C is a central stand pipe secured upon the bottom of the receptacle and passing through the false bottom to near the top of the receptacle.
D is a disinfecting cartridge reinovably inserted in the stand pipe and comprising a tubular core a open at the upper end and provided with guide flanges b and an outer covering 0 of felt, wicking, or other like adsorbent material fastened upon it to an amount to permit the introduction and removal of the cartridge.
E is the cover formed with a hollow outer depending rim (Z and covered on the outside with felt or other suitable absorbent mate- Specification of Letters Patent.

rial c retained in position thereon by an outer covering f of perforated sheet metal, wire screen or other equivalent.
The hollow rim (Z of the cover and the core a. constitute receptacles for holding a liquid disinfectant, the :former may be provided with a suitable fill opening as 71.. The outer wall 1'. of the rim is perforated to-permit the disinfectant to be absorbed by the absorbent material 0 and both the stand pipe C and core (1. are suitably perforated to permit the disinfectant to be absorbed by the absorbent covering (1 and thence pass in the form of vapor into the surrounding space. Some of the disinfectant held by the absorbent in the cover will also naturally escape through the outer covering and cover the exposed outer face of the body of the can as well as of the cover with the disiujt'ectant aided by the fact that the fumes or vapors given off by most disinfectants are readily condensed and retained upon metallic surfaces and form an adhesive film thereon which keeps the flies off. A single charge of the disinfectant given to the cover may thus form a protection for the whole 1y season and it is obvious that the fill opening it may be omitted as the charging may be done by pouring the liquid upon the cove and allowing it to soak through the absorbent.
The false bottom 13 which may be of wire screen or perforated sheet metal is an optional feature of the construction, it permits any liquid in the garbage to drain into the chamber below where it cannot enter the stand pipe, the lower portion of which is imperforate.
lVhat we claim as our invention is:
1. The combination with a receptacle for holding garbage, of a central stand pipe sccured therein and a disinfecting-cartrldge contained within and closely fitting the same, said cartridge consisting of a hollow core constituting a receptacle for holding a liquid disinfectant, and a covering of absorbent material thereon, the core and the stand pipe being perforated.
2. The combination with a receptacle for holding garbage, of a stand pipe centrally secured upon the bottom of the receptacle and extending to near the top and provided with perforations and a disinfecting-cm- In testimony whereof We afiiX our signatridge removably contained Within the stand tures in presence of two witnesses.
