Description

G. M. VAN BUREN. TICKET HOLDER.
No. 98,448 Patented Dec. 28. 1869.
idnitrd fitters fitted. emu.
Letters Patent No. 98,448, dated December 28, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT m TICKET-HOLDERS.
The Schedu1e referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Teal! whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. VAN BUREN, of the city of New York, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railroad Ticket-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view.
Figure 2 is a section of fig. 1.
The nature of this invention consists in the manner of constructing the upper end or opening of the box, so that while the tickets are retained in the receptacle by the top or lid, yet the front ticket may be exposed to view, and the top be easilyopened to draw out the ticket when wanted for use.
The box is made with a partition .in the middle, and. alike at both ends, and can be used for dili'erent railroads, ferries, 8:0.
This box or ticket-holder may be made of any orna-' mental form, and of suitable metal, papier-mache, vulcanite, or any of the materials used for card-boxes, &c.
In the drawing A is the body of the box, having receptacles A A open at the ends.
B is the lid, and a is the opening on the side, near the end, of suflicient depth to show the card, and yet not deep enough to allow it to fall out. This opening need not extend across the box at the bottom part, but "may he in a curved line, or waved, or in any other shape, as the intention is to permitthe particular color or distinctive characteristics of the cards or tickets to be seen at a glance, as well as to afford an easy access contained cards tend to arrange themselves upon this oblique bottom in the form of steps, each card being-s a little higher than'the one immediately behind it, an
arrangement which greatly facilitates the taking hold and withdrawing a single card without disturbinglor removing any or the others.
Many persons travelling'on city passenger-railways, and thence to other routes, either stages, steaniers,' ferries, and general railroads leading out of the cities, experience inconveniece in readily getting at their tickets. By this simple arrangement their tickets may be placed each in its proper receptacle, and at a glance the proper ticket can be recognized and readily removed.
Having thus fully described my invention, I do not claim the use of a box ticket-holder with a lid, as visiting-cards, and many others, are thus held; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A ticket-holder, constructed with a portion of one side at the end left off, whereby the contents may be seen, in connection with the covering-lid B, and diagonal division -plate b, substantially as and for the purpose described. I
GEORGE M. VAN BUREN.
