Description

`RICHARD A. KENDALL, 'or MINERAL POINT, WIsCoNsIN.
Letters Patent No. 98,778, dated January 11, 1870.
IMPRO'VED SEAT-CUSHION.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern .i
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. KENDALI., of Miheral Point, in the county of Iowa, and State of XV isconsinhave Vinvented a new and useful Improvement in Seat-Cushions; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full', clear, and exact descriptionthereof, which will enable others skilled iu the a'rt to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication.
This invention relates' to improvements in seatl cushions for churches, halls, and other placesyand consists in providing the same with spring-hooks, for attachment to the benches in` a simple way, and so that they maybe readily detached, the said springhooks being attachedlto the under or back sides of the cushions, so este hook overthe front edge of they seat, or the topiof the back, all as hereinafter more fully specified. y f
Figure l represents a front elevation of a seat with` my improved cushions attached to it, and
Figure 2 represents a transverse section of the same.
ASimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the bottom, and B, the back of the seat.
Gis the cushion for the seat, and D, the one for the back. ,'They are provided with spring-hooksE, of broad, dat, metal spring-material, attached' to the sides, fwhich bear against the seat or back, and arranged tohook over the edge, and bear against the t me, this under side of the seat, or the` rear side of the back,
with sufcient force to create friction enough to 'hold the said cushions from moving about or sliding olf, but so as not to offer material resistance to the removal by the hands when required. t
As a further means of retaining the cushion for the seat, I have extended the metal strips, which form the hooks, beyond the rear edge, and bent them up parallel with the back of the seat, as clearly shownv at F, so that the lower ledge of the back-cushion sits down in front of the turued-up parts, and is' forced against them by the back of the sitter in a way to prevent the cushions C from working forward.
Having thus described my invention,I
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patenti 1. The combination, with the cushions G and D, of
the spring-hooks E, arranged for hooking over .the front and top edges of the seat and back, and ypressing against their sides, all substantially as specitied;
2. In combination vvith the above, the extension F of the springs, 'as and for the purpose substantially as specified.
The above specification of my invention signed' by day, of 1869.
RICHARD A. KENDALL.
