ANTON KRETSCHAN, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOPIS.
MARCEL-WAVE CURLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4', 1911.
Application filed May 19, 1910. Serial No. 562,158.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON Knn'rscHAN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Marcel-fave Curler, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention relates to curling irons which are used, when heated, for crimping, curling, or otherwise setting in a fixed position, human hair. And the principal object of this invention is to obtain a curling iron by means of which a peculiar ornamentation may be given to what are known in the art as Marcel waves.
A further object is to obtain a device of the kind named which can be operated by a girl or woman upon the hair of her own head, as well as upon the hair of another person. And a further object is to obtain a device which is simple in construction, durable and not liable to get out of order.
In the drawing referred to Figure l is a front elevation of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation at an angle of ninety degrees from the elevation in Fig. 1, of the device embodying the invention, with the jaws of said device partly open. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. l, viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows, Fig. 4L is a section on line 1 -Ll of Fig. l. on an enlarged scale, and viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a portion of one of the jaws of the device.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A and B are the jaws `of the device.
C and D are the handle of jaws A and B, respectively.
E is a spring which is arranged to yieldingly hold the jaws A, B, closed.
F, F, are bases mounted on the tables b of jaw B so as to slide longitudinally on guides provided therefor. The bases F, F, are provided with a curved or semi-cylindrical surface on the face thereof adjacent to the jaws A and said jaws A are curved to correspond with the semi-cylindrical surface of said bases F. Said bases F are also provided with grooves f extending over the curved surfaces of the bases from one side to the other thereof. f, f, are parallel ribs. The manner in which the bases F are respectively mounted on jaw B is illustrated in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. The jaw Bis made `of sheet metal and parts b are forced out of the body of said jaw to form parallel grooves which serve as guides for the bases F. The edges of bases F are respectively turned in to obtain parallel ribs or parts f which loosely fit guides I) so that said bases F may slide back and forth on the tables L of jaws B. The parts f of bases F and the parts of jaw B form interlocking longitudinal grooves and ribs which join or hold together bases F and jaw B while permitting longitudinal movement of said bases on said jaw.
G is a lever attached to jaw B by pivot g. Lever G is provided near the ends with slots y and is attached to the bases F by pivots II.
I is a handle which is attached to one of the bases F. By means of the handle I the base to which it is attached is made to slide back and forth, on its guides Z), and by means of the lever H the other one of said bases F is made to slide in the opposite direction.
To use the device the jaws A, B, are warmed, and are then opened by means of handles C, D, against the resiliency of spring E, the hair to be curled or waved is placed between said jaws, and the hold on the handles relaxed so that the spring E will close said jaws. The handle I is then moved to move the bases F on guides b. After a suitable time the jaws are opened and the hair released when it will be found to have a wave conforming to the bases F.
I claim- 1. The combination of jaws pivotally connected together and provided with handles, one of said jaws provided with parallel grooves, parallel bases on the other of said jaws, said bases having faces fitting in said grooves and provided with curved faces having grooves extending from side to side thereof, said bases movable in said jaw and a handle connected to said bases.
2. Jaws pivotally connected together, handles to said jaws, and one of said jaws provided with longitudinal grooves, in combination with bases mounted on the other one of said jaws, the said bases and jaws on which they are mounted provided with interlocking grooves and ribs whereby the bases are movable on the jaws, and said bases provided with curved faces having grooves from side to side thereof, and a handle connected to said bases.
3. Jaws pivotally attached together, han-V dles to said jaws, one of said jaws provided with longitudinal grooves and the other with tables opposite said grooves, ribs forced out from the body of the jaw which is pro` vided with said tables and arranged to register with said grooves, in combina-tion with bases mounted on said tables and movable on said guides, said bases fitting the longitudinal grooves, a handle, connected to one of said bases, and a connection between the bases, said bases respectively provided with grooves from one side to th-e other thereof.
4. Jaws pivotally connected together, handles to said jaws and one of said jaws provided with longitudinal grooves, in combinaof May, 1910.
ANTON KRETSCHAN. In the presence of- CHARLns TURNER BROWN, Com A. ADAMS.
