To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM CooN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kidder, in the county of Idaho and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to punching and cutting machines and has for an object to provide a punch and shear operated from a single series of compound levers.
A further object of the invention is to provide in conjunction with a lever-operated punch havin@ means for raising and lowering the mandrel, of a shear member carried by such mandrel and adapted to coact with a pivoted lever operated from the punch mechanism.
A further object of the invention isy to provide in conjunction with the punch operating means, a plurality of shears of different power operated from the punch operating means.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a view of the machine seen from the side with one side housing plate removed and the lever shown broken. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the punch and associate parts shown in lowered position and certain parts shown in section. Fig. 3 is a view in edge elevation as indicated by arrow 3 at Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse horizontal sectional view as indicated at line 44 of Fig. 2.

The device is mounted upon a base 10 and comprises side housing plates 11 and 11 erected upon such base in spaced relation as indicated at Figs. 3 and 4, Figs. 1 and 2 being shown with one of the side plates as 11 removed, such side plates being secured by any approved means as the screws 12 engaging in holes 13 formed in the base 10 and in the spacing blocks 14 and 15. Mounted slidably upon the base 10 and between the housing plates 11 and 11 is a wedge-shaped block 16 movable longitudinally by means of a bell crank foot lever 17 pivoted as at 18 to the base 10 and provided with a slot 19 engaging upon a pin 2O rigid with the block 16. Mounted upon the wedgeshaped block 16 is a mandrel block shown as a whole at 21 having a stepped portion 22 carrying a mandrel 23. The block 21 is maintained against displacement by means of a block 24 rigid with the housing plates 11 and 11 through which extends the drill shank or spindle 25. The drill shank also extends upwardly through the spacing block 15 which permits a vertically reciprocating movement of the spindle. The spindle is provided with a bearing portion 26 which is preferably, though not necessarily, formed integral with the spindle and to which are pivoted as at 27 and 27 the toggles 28 and 28, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the spacer block 15 as at 29 and 29', the spacer block being provided with a furrow 30 to permit the upper ends of the toggles to be inserted into such furrow and to provide material to position the pivots 29 and 29.
As indicated by F igs., 1 and 2 when the toggles 28 and 28 are spread as shown at Fig. 1 the drill spindle 25 is raised but when moved toward each other as indicated at Fig. 2 the drill spindle is depressed. To provide for such action a walking beam 31 is pivoted between the housing plates 11 as at 32 with a link 33 pivoted to one end of the walking beam and extending to the joint of the toggle 28 and another link 34 pivoted to the opposite end of the walking beam and extending and pivotcd to the joint of the toggle 28. Rigidly connected with the walking beam 31 is a block 35 integral or rigid with arms 36 extending along the outside of the housing plates 11 to which is rigidly secured a lever 37 by which the walking beam 31, and consequently the toggles and punch spindle. are manipulated.
The mandrel block 21 is provided with a shear member 38 rigidly carried thereby which is opposite an opening 39 formed through the housing plates 11 and 11 so that a rod may be inserted through such opening upon the shear member 38. Pivoted to the block 14 is a lever 40 having a concave shear edge 41 positioned for interaction with the shear 38. such lever being actuated by connection with the punch spindle 25 by means of a slot 42 and pin 43, the spindle being provided with a mortise to receive the extremity of the lever 40 as indicated at Fig. 2.
Upon the iller block 15 a shear 44 is rig'- idly mounted with a second shear 45 carried upon a lever 46 extending through a mortise 47 in the upper extremity of the punch spindle 25 and pivoted tothe spacer block 15 as at 48. The punch spindle 25 is, of course, provided with any approved form of punch shown conventionally at 49, the housing plates 11 and 11 being provided with cut-out vportions producingl an opening 50 to permit the insertion of material upon the mandrel 28 and under the punch 49.
In operation the material to be punched will be laid upon the mandrel 23 and the foot lever 17 manipulated to raise the mandrel so that the material is in contact with or adjacent to the punch 49.I This position being secured the punch will be manipulated by manipulating the lever 37 to force the punch down to position shown at Fig. 2.
If the machine is to be used as a shear a rod or other article to be cut will be inserted through the openings 39 and laid upon the shear block 38 when the block will be raised by manipulating the foot lever 17 until the rod to be cut is in Contact with or adjacent t0 the lever 40 when the manipulation of the lever 37 will actuate the lever 40 to shear the rod s'o inserted.
It will be apparent that with the parts disposed as shown at Fig. 1 any sheet metal or other material to be sheared which is inserted between the shears 44 and 45 will, upon the depressing of the lever 37, be sheared by the shear action of such parts.

In a device of the class described, a vertica-lly reciprocating rod, a lever carried by the rod7 a shear -carried by the lever, Asaid rod engaging the lever `between the shear and its fulcrum7 a second lever carried by the rod, 'a shear carried by said second lever, said shear being carried between the rod and its ulcrum.
2. in a device of the class described a rod vertically reciprocating, a lever adapted to reciprocate the rod, a lever carried by the rod, a shear carried by the lever, 'said rod engaging the lever between the shear and its ulcrum, a second lever carried by the rod, a shear carried by the lever between the rod and its fulcru'm, a 'coa'cting shear plate for the last mentioned shear, and means to adjust such shear plate. y
