The object of this invention is to provide a simple and compact cigar tip cutter which shall be adapted for use as a watch charm or fob and which shall be so constructed that the act of cutting off the tip shall not only lock the cutter in its closed position but also retain the tip in the casing or shell of the device, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawing, a designates a casing which tapers toward its upper end and is there preferably provided with means for suspending it from a watch chain or fob and which at its lower end is closed by a flat plate 6 provided with a central hole a, the base or lower portion of said casing being preferably elliptical in horizontal section.

The cutting blade d lies, when in a closed position, on the inner face of the bottom wall 6, covering the opening a, and is provided with a curved cutting edge cl. This blade is attached along its outer edge to the lower edge of a door plate 6 which is curved to correspond with the elliptical shape of the casing and forms when closed a part 'of the wall of the casing, its edges being flush with the adjacent edges of the casing and bottom plate. This door plate 6 is hinged to the main part of the casing upon avertical pintle f, which permits the door to swing outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4. To prevent the door swinging too far lugs g are provided near the hinge, one lug being upon the casing and one upon the door, and to normally throw the door open when released a spring coil h is mounted Specification of Letters Patent.

on a vertical pin 2' in the casing near the hinge, this coil being provided with two arms 7' which the coil tends to spread apart, one of these arms bearing upon the inner side of the casing and the other against the inner side of the door. At the end of the door opposite the hinge it is provided with a nose is which is adapted to be automatically caught when the door is closed by a spring actuated catchl mounted inside the casing; and to release the catch Z a small push pin m is employed, so that by simply pressing in the pin m with the finger, the door will be normally swung open and the cutter will be brought to its operative position.

To cut off a tip, the tip end of the cigar is inserted in the hole 0 and the door of the casing is then closed to latching position. This will cut off the tip and close the open ing 0 and the door, thus retaining the tip in the casing. To empty the tips from the casing it is simply necessary to open the door and shake the tips out through the door-way or the tip opening 0.

To guide the cutter, I provide a bar n,

'which is curved to conform approximately to the shape of the base of the casing and is supported directly over the knife blade, forming between the bottom of the casing and the guide-bar a guiding channel extending the full length of the bottom of the casing. This bar is supported at the proper height above the bottom by having its ends n thickened and soldered or otherwise fastened to the bottom 6, one end being fastened at a point directly under the catch Z and the other being fastened at a point adjacent to the hinge. The stops 9 are so located that the cutter has a portion of its cutting edge always between the guide-bar n and the bottom of the casing, so that the proper guidance of the cutter will be assured at all times.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a cigar tip cutter, the combination of a receptacle for the tips having a tip receiving hole in its bottom, a door plate closing a tip-discharging opening in the side wall of the casing adjacent to the bottom. means for hinging this plate at one end and means for detachably latching it closed at the other end, means for normally swinging it open to discharge the tips when released the casing and lying against the bottom wall thereof.

2. In a cigar tip cutter, the combination of a receptacle for the tips having a tip receiving hole in its bottom, a door plate closing a tip-discharging opening in the side wall of the casing adjacent to the bottom, means for hinging this plate at one end and means for detachably latching it closed at the other end, means for normally swinging it open to discharge the tips when released from the catch, a cutter blade affixed to the lower edge of the door and having its cut ting edge extending into the casing and lying against the bottom wall thereof, and a guide-bar within the receptacle and lying over the blade and having its ends aflixed to the casing, for the purpose set forth.

3. In a cigar tip cutter, the combination of a receptacle for the tips having a tip receiving hole in one of its walls, said casing having a portion of one of its walls rendered movable to constitute a tip discharging door, means normally tending to open said door, means for latching it closed, and a cutting blade attached to said door and extending across said tip receiving hole when the door is closed, for the purpose set forth.
