Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Aristeria plant named ‘D Blue Moon’ is disclosed, characterized by tight and uniform rosette shape. Foliage is uniquely colored Green NN137A. The new variety is an Aristeria, typically produced as an ornamental plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Aristeria beguinii.
Variety denomination: ‘D BLUE MOON’.
The new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program by the inventor, to produce distinct and better performing varieties. The seed parent is the inventor's own hybrid Gasteria carinata #1018, unpatented. The pollen parent is the inventor's own hybrid, Aristaloe aristata #2001, unpatented. The crossing resulting in the new cultivar was made in 2019 at a nursery in Amposta, Spain. ‘D BLUE MOON’ was found and selected by the inventor in March 2021 at the same location in Amposta, Spain.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘D BLUE MOON’ was first performed in Amposta, Spain in March 2021, by vegetative cuttings. ‘D BLUE MOON’ has since produced several generations and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.
The cultivar ‘D BLUE MOON’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘D BLUE MOON.’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘D BLUE MOON’ as a new and distinct Aristeria cultivar:
-
- 1. NN137A foliage color.
- 2. Tight and uniform rosette shape.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘D BLUE MOON’ are similar to the seed parent in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new variety differ in the following:
-
- 1. Plants of the new variety are rosette-like, having a radial symmetry, while plants of the seed parent are not rosette-shaped, but have single axis symmetry.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘D BLUE MOON’ are similar to the pollen parent in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new variety differ in the following:
-
- 1. Leaf color of the new variety is green (NN137A and 138B), while the leaf color of the pollen parent is deep green (Green 139A).
- 2. Leaves of the new variety are much thicker than leaves of the pollen parent.
‘D BLUE MOON’ can be compared to the commercial variety Gasteraloe ‘D Delta’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 30,905. The two varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety differs in the following:
-
- 1. Leaf color of the new variety is green (NN137A and 138B), while the leaf color of this comparator is deep green (147A and 139A).
- 2. Leaves of the new variety are thicker and more upright than leaves of this comparator.
‘D BLUE MOON’ can be compared to the unpatented commercial variety Gasteraloe ‘WT01’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 22,012. The two varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety differs in the following:
-
- 1. Leaf color of the new variety is green (NN137A and 138B), while the leaf color of this comparator is lighter green (N137A and Green-White 157B).
- 2. Leaves of the new variety are thicker and more upright than leaves of this comparator.
- 3. Pustules, called “dots” in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 22,012 are colored Greyed-Green 191B and 191C on foliage of ‘C Blue Moon’. These structures are colored White N155C in ‘WT01’.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘D BLUE MOON’ grown in a greenhouse in Amposta, Spain. This plant is approximately 50 weeks old, shown in a 9 cm container.
In the following description, color references are made to the Royal Horticultural Society Color Chart, 2015 edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘D BLUE MOON’ plants in a glass greenhouse in Amposta, Spain. Temperatures ranged from 18° C. to 20° C. during the day, and 15° C. to 18° C. during the night. No artificial light, photoperiodic treatments or chemical treatments were given to the plants. Natural light conditions were approximately 2500 to 3000 fc of light. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
