- Catheterization of the left atrium presents great interest and it is performed for diagnostic, research (function of the left atrium, hemodynamic studies, secretory capacity) and therapeutic (balloon mitral valvuloplasty) purposes.
- catheterization of the left atrium became a nessecity with the establishment of percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty as an important therapeutic modality for the nonsurgical treatment of rheumatic mitral stenosis.
- Retrograde (via the left ventricle) catheterization of the left atrium presents certain difficulties, and has the risk of damage to the subvalvular apparatus. These result from the position of the mitral ring relative to the left atrial cavity. To approach the mitral orifice, the catheter must bend through a large angle.
- the present invention is a safe and effectives means for the successful retrograde catherization of the left atrium that bypassess the serious disadvantages of the transseptal catheterization.

Abstract
Cathéter cardiaque dirigeable pour le cathétérisme rétrograde (se faisant par le ventricule gauche) de l'oreillette gauche. Ledit cathéter se compose d'un cathéter proprement dit (1, 5) pourvu, dans sa partie proximale, d'un bras de direction (8) qui passe par la lumière de la tige de cathéter, dépasse légèrement de l'extrémité distale de la tige de cathéter, et est fixé à l'extrémité distale du cathéter (1, 2, 5, 6). Lorsque le bras de direction (8) est sorti (2), par des manipulations externes, l'angle de courbure de la partie distale de la tige augmente (1), et lorsque le bras de direction (8) est rentré (6), l'angle de courbure de la partie distale du cathéter se referme (5). Ces manipulations, combinées avec la rotation adéquate de la tige de cathéter autour de son axe longitudinal, rotation également obtenue par des manipulations externes, permettent de faire accéder le cathéter à l'oreillette gauche, lorsque le cathéter a été introduit, par un déplacement rétrograde, dans le ventricule gauche.
