Definitions

  • This invention relates to a molded plastic container and more particularly relates to an improved molded plastic, drum-type container of the type used primarily for the storage and shipment of liquid chemical compounds.
  • Containers have been described in a number of US patents, particularly the following US patent nos: 3,050,773; 3,949,877; 4,032,031; 4,170,623; 4,228,122; 4,228,911; 4,257,527; 4,282,974; 4,378,328; 4,529,570; 4,898,296; 4,925,049; 5,018,642; 5,033,639; 5,044,510; and 5,114,659. None of the above patents discloses a container of the type described and claimed herein.
  • Another object of the invention is the provision of a container which has increased compression strength to allow the container to be stacked with other such containers vertically higher than has been possible in the past.
  • Yet another object of the invention is to provide a container with stronger solid end handling rings and intermediate rolling hoops that serve to increase the side wall strength and also facilitate the handling of the container by modern methods.
  • Still another object of the invention is to provide a container end wall arrangement with improved drainage to minimize the possibility of seepage of standing water into a closure.

  • said rolling hoops are arranged spaced from each other above and below a central area of said side wall. More preferably, said rolling hoops are arranged in two pairs spaced from each other.

  • Major portions of the container side and end walls 20, 30 and 40 are formed by a blow molding process; however, certain portions of the container 10, such as handling rings and rolling hoops (both of which are described in further detail below) , are formed and secured to the body of the container 10 by a process including both blow molding and compression molding.
  • Side wall 20 is generally cylindrical throughout the majority of its length, as indicated at 20a, but may have upper and lower portions 20b that are slightly concave.
  • the side wall 20 of the container 10 is provided with two pairs of integral rolling hoops 22 spaced .. vertically from each other above and below the center of the container side wall 20 (this is best seen in Figures 5 and 6) .
  • Each of the rolling hoops 22 is solid, rather than hollow, and is formed and welded to the container, at the same time the body is blow molded, by a compression molding process of the type disclosed in US Patent No. 4,713,207.
  • each rolling hoop 22 is preferably generally rectangular, as shown in the drawings, although, in certain instances, it has been found that it may be advantageous to provide rolling hoops with concave outer surfaces (not shown) .

Also, the side wall 20 has a lower portion 44 projecting downwardly beyond the bottom wall 40. At its lower extremity, side wall 20 has an integral, solid, outwardly projecting handling ring 46 that is similar in construction and operation to the upper handling ring 26.
  • the bottom end wall 40 and side wall 20 have adjacent areas molded to extend axially and radially inward, as shown at 48, to form drain hole openings 49, so that liquid can drain off the container if it is placed upside down, in the same way that it can drain from the top wall 30.
