Definitions
- the invention relates to an apparatus for sorting eggshells and un ⁇ hatched eggs from newly hatched chickens.
- the eggs When chickens are industrially incubated, the eggs are first placed in incubators, and immediately prior to the hatching the eggs are trans ⁇ ferred to hatching chambers. The eggs are placed in stacked hatching trays. When the chickens are hatched, the trays are removed. They contain chickens, small pieces of eggshell resulting from the chickens pricking holes in said eggs in order to come out thereof, the empty eggshells, as well as unhatched eggs.
- the object of the invention is to automatize the above procedure in a satisfying manner.
- the basic feature of the automation is a particularly shaped grating comprising a number of bars rotated two and two in opposite directions, the distance between said bars being smaller than the size of an egg, but sufficiently large for allowing the chickens to fall down between said bars without being damaged.
- the chickens fall through said grating together with small pieces of eggshell, while the empty eggshells and the unhatched eggs are re ⁇ tained.
- the hatched chickens are inter alia due to their downs larger than the eggs determining the distance between the bars, and due to their insignificant weight the chickens cannot by virtue of their own weight pass between said bars.
- the conveyor is open, i.e. provided with openings which nevertheless are so small that the chickens have a firm and reliable stepping surface.
- the upper side of the conveyor may be arranged for vibrating movements so that small pieces of eggshell are caused to fall down, and be laterally inclined so that large pieces of eggshell not immediately falling through the grating slide over the side rim co-assisted by said vibrating movements.
- a blower may be provided, the air current of which blows the shells aside. The empty eggshells and the unhatched eggs are retained on the grat ⁇ ing.
- a collecting conveyor optionally being arranged therebelow.
- the hatching trays can be emptied by means of a unit turning said trays upside down above the grating with the result that the entire contents fall out on the grating.
- the hatching trays When the hatching trays are stackwise removed from the hatching chamber, they are transferred to a destacking device connected to a conveyor.
- the destacking device removes one hatching tray at a time and transfers it to the conveyor.
- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a grating according to the invention
- Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the grating
- Fig. 3 illustrates a complete apparatus according to the invention in ⁇ cluding a grating, a conveyor arranged therebelow, and an emptying unit.
- the stacked hatching trays are carried to a destacking device transferring the trays one by one to a first conveyor, from which they are transferred to a second conveyor advancing them to a short roller conveyor 2 capable of advancing two hatching trays 4.
- the hatching trays are advanced to an emptying unit 6 turning the trays upside down.
- the emptying unit com- prises a short conveyor 8 capable of advancing two trays and having an upper side flushing with the roller conveyor and being arranged in imme ⁇ diate extension thereof.
- a length of the central portion of the roller conveyor 2 is driven such that the front tray is pushed onto the con ⁇ veyor of the emptying unit with the front end first immediately followed by the second tray and advanced by the conveyor.
- the conveyor 8 of the emptying unit is driven it is ensured that the tray enters the emp ⁇ tying unit completely without projecting to the rear side on the roller conveyor 2.
- the conveyor of the emptying unit is mounted in a frame pivotally arranged about its longitudinal axis and forming part of the frame 10 of the apparatus.
- the conveyor frame can be caused to rotate half a turn by means of a gear motor 1 2 with the result that the trays are turned upside down and retained by their side rims resting on a longitudinal rail in each side.
- the conveyor is driven by means of a gear motor 14 mounted on a guideway at one end of said conveyor.
- the gear motor 14 can be caused to drivingly engage and disen ⁇ gage the drive shaft of the conveyor by means of an air cylinder so as to allow a turning of the emptying unit.
- the rotating direction of the gear motor can be changed in such a man ⁇ ner that the conveyor can advance in either one direction or another direction.
- the conveyor is provided with carriers engaging the trays when said trays are turned upside down and pushing said trays forwards out of the unit while said trays slide on the longitudinal rails. Subsequently, the trays can be pushed onto a second conveyor advanc ⁇ ing the trays to washing and disinfection.
- the emptying unit is arranged immediately above a grating 1 6 compris- ing a plurality of parallel bars 1 8 of a circular cross section and pivotally arranged in two side members 20. At one end the side members are pro ⁇ vided with interengaging sprockets 22 driven by a gear motor.
- the grating is inclined in the longitudinal direction of the bars.
- the grating is inclined upwardly and rearwardly towards the emptying unit 6.
- the side of the emptying unit turns downwards towards the uppermost side of the grating. The turning is performed slowly and the chickens and the waste slide towards the opposite side, over said side and down on the grating.
- the vertical fall is very modest, if it can at all be referred to as a vertical fall.
- a longi ⁇ tudinal conveyor can be provided at the front lower rim of the grating for the collection and the removal of the empty and unhatched eggs, or the collection can be performed in roller vessels with a rim capable of reaching to the grating.
- the conveyor 24 is open and preferably an apron conveyor provided with openings which never ⁇ theless are so small that the chickens have a firm and reliable stepping surface, and which allow passage of pieces of eggshell.
- the upper side of the conveyor can perform vibrat- ing movements, preferably by being influenced by an eccentric means whereby the passage of small pieces of eggshell is facilitated, and in addition the conveyor can be laterally inclined so that large pieces of eggshell not immediately falling through the grating slide over the side rim co-assisted by the vibrating movements.
- a blower can be provided which produces a transverse air current blowing the shells aside and over said side rim.
- a collecting tray for collection of the egg ⁇ shell residues can be provided below the conveyor.
- the invention provides an efficient apparatus for sorting newly hatched chickens from the eggshells, where the most essential feature is the particularly shaped grating.
- the emptying of the hatching trays and the further handling of the chickens and the shells can be solved in several ways.
