光通信に用いられるフヱルールは, 光ファイバコネクタの重要部品である。 こ のフヱルールは, 石英ガラス製の光ファイバが挿入される貫通孔を有する円筒状 部品である。 光ファイバ同士の接続は, フヱルールの貫通孔に, 光ファイバを挿 入固定して先端を研磨した後, スリーブとよばれる外筒管に挿入し, 他のフヱル ールと突き合わせることによって行われる。 このためフヱルールには, 優れた寸 法精度を有するのは勿諭であるが, この他にも機械的強度力高いこと, スリーブ への挿抜時の摩擦に耐える高い耐磨耗性を有すること, 先端を研磨する際に光フ アイバとの被研磨量が大きく相違しないように石英ガラスに近い被研磨特性を示 すこと, さらには熱膨張係数が石英ガラスに近いこと等の材質特性が要求される。 これらの材質特性を満足し, かつ, 安価に製造できるフヱルールを提供すること 力光通信網を整備する上での急務になつている。
現在, フエルールとしては, ジルコニァ, アルミナ等のセラミ ックス製のもの や, 非晶質ガラス製のものが使用されている。 これらの内で, セラミ ックス製フ 二ルールは, 機械的強度ゃ耐磨耗性の面では優れるが, 被研磨速度が石英フアイ バに比べて著しく小さく, 特殊な研磨方法を採用しなければならないこと, 熱膨 張係数力光ファイバに比べて非常に大きいため, 温度変ィヒによる両者の寸法変ィ匕 によって初期の接続損失が劣化し易いこと, さらに成形性や加工性が悪いため生 産効率が低く, コスト高であるという欠点を有している。
これに対して, 非晶質ガラス製フヱルールは, 被研磨速度が石英ファイバに非 常に近いために特殊な研磨方法を採用する必要がなく, 研磨コス卜が低減できる こと, 成形性や加工性が良く安価な生産が可能である等の優れた点を有するが, 機械的強度ゃ耐磨耗性が不十分であるという欠点がある。
また, 結晶化ガラスを用いたフヱルールも提案されている。 例えば, 特公昭 6 3 - 5 0 0 6 8 4号公報には, フヱルール材に L i 2 0 - A 1り 〇3 — S i 〇2 系の結晶化ガラスを用いる技術が記載されている。 この技術では, 熱膨張係数が 石英ファイバに近いフヱルールが得られるものの, 耐摩耗性, 被研磨特性, 及び 加工性等については考慮されておらず, これらの特性について何ら知見を与える ものではない。 また, 特開平 1—2 8 8 8 0 3号公報には, P 2 05 一 C a O系 結晶化ガラスからなる接続部品が開示されている。 この技術によれば, 加工性の よいフヱル一ル材を得ることができる力 耐摩耗性, 機械的強度等については考 慮されていない。 また, 貫通孔を得るために, レーザーを用いるなど, コストア ップ要因を含んでいる。
このように, 光ファイバコネクタ用として求められる要件を全て満足するフエ ル一ルが存在しないのが現状である。
ところで, 一般に, 結晶化ガラスは, 析出結晶とガラスマトリックスとの界面 でのクラックの屈曲や分岐等によるエネルギーの吸収効果によって, 非晶質ガラ スよりも高い強度を有する。 また, 結晶化することで耐摩耗性を向上させたり, 熱膨張係数の小さい材料を得ることも可能である。 さらに結晶化ガラスは, 非晶 質ガラスと同様に量産に適した成形性を有するという長所がある。
従って, 結晶化ガラスを使用すれば, 従来のフヱルール材料にはなかった優れ た特性をもち, 力、つ, 安価に製造できるフエルールを提供できる可能性がある。 しかし, 上述のような結晶化ガラスの優れた特徴は, 析出結晶の種類, 大きさ, 量によって著しく変化し, 不適切な結晶化状態では逆にフユルールに必要な特性 を得ることができない。
そこで, 本発明の一目的は, 機械的強度ゃ耐磨耗性に優れた光ファイバコネク 夕用フエルールを提供することにある。
また, 本発明のもう一つの目的は, 光ファイバに近い熱膨張係数と被研磨特性 を有する光フアイバコネクタ用フエルールを提供することにある。
また, 本発明のさらにもう一つの目的は, 単一モード光ファイバの接続に用い られるジルコ二ァ製フヱルールと同等の寸法精度を有する光ファイバコネクタ用 フエルールを提供することにある。
さらに, 本発明の他の目的は, ジルコ二ァ製フヱルールより安価に製造できる 光ファイバコネクタ用フヱルールを提供することにある。
発明の開示
本発明者等は, 種々の研究を行った結果, ある特定の組成と性質を有する結晶 化ガラスを用いることにより, 要求される材質特性を全て満たし, かつ, 安価に 製造可能なフェルールが得られることを見 、だした。
即ち, 本発明の光ファイバコネクタ用フヱルールは, 重量百分率で, s i〇2

本発明のフエルールにおいて, 使用する結晶化ガラスの析出結晶量は 3 0〜7 0体積%, 好ましくは, 3 5〜6 0体積%である。 析出結晶量は, 熱膨張係数や 機的強度にも影響を及ぼすが, 特に耐摩耗性, 被研磨特性及び成形性に著しい影 響を及ぼす。 即ち, 結晶の析出量が 3 0体積%未満であると耐摩耗性が不十分に なり, ジルコ二ァ製スリ一ブに対して繰り返し揷抜を行つた場合にフヱルールに 傷が発生し, 初期の接続特性を維持できなくなる。 これに対し, 3 0体積%以上 の量の結晶が析出している場合には, 耐摩耗性は著しく向上し, 数百回におよぶ 挿抜でも傷が発生しない。 ところ力^ 必要以上に多量の結晶が析出していると被 研磨特性や成形性を悪化させることになる。 即ち, 7 0体積%より多くの結晶が 析出すると, 被研磨速度が石英ガラスに比べて小さくなり, 両者の被研磨速度の 差を軽滅させるような特殊な研磨方法を必要とするためコスト高になる。 さらに, そのように結晶性の強いガラスは成形時に失透を発生し易く, 効率の高い生産を 行うことが出来ない。
また, 石英ガラス製の光ファイバの熱膨張係数は, 5. 5 X 1 0 ~7/°C (- 5 0〜1 5 0 °C) であり, 一般のセラミックスや非晶質ガラスに比べて著しく小さ いため, 既存のフェル一ルを使用すると, 温度変化によって両者の寸法が変ィ匕し, 初期の接続特性が劣化し易い。 これに対し, 9ースポジュメン固溶体や ;9一石英 固溶体は極めて小さな熱膨張係数を有するため, これらの結晶を主結晶とする結 晶化ガラスで作製した本発明のフ ルールは熱膨張係数が小さく, 上記問題を克 服或いは軽減できる。
熱膨張係数は, 結晶の析出量によって変化し, 結晶量が 3 0〜7 0体積%では 一 1 0〜 5 0 x 1 0 V°C (一 5 0〜1 5 0 °C) の範囲となる。 この範囲であれ ばフエルール用途として使用可能であるが, 特に— 5〜3 5 X 1 0— 7/°Cの熱膨 張係数を有するように調整することが望ましい。
また, 本発明において, 結晶化ガラスの析出結晶の平均粒径は 2 m以下, 好 ましくは 1 m以下である。 平均粒径が 2 β m以下であれば, 2 0 0 M P a以上 の曲げ強度が得られ, 力、つ, フヱルールとして十分な耐摩耗性を有する結晶化ガ ラスとなる。
尚, フエルールの機械的強度に関しては, J I S C 5 4 1 5による同軸コネ ク夕の引張強度の規格値である 5 k gの抗折カを確保するには, フヱルールの曲 げ強度が 200 M P a以上必要であると計算され, 好ましくは 250 M P a以上 必要である。 そして結晶の平均粒径が 2 m以下であれば, 十分に高い機械的強 度を得ることができ, このような要求を満たし得る。 しかし, 平均粒径が大きく なりすぎると, 結晶とガラスマトリックスの熱膨張差によつて, 両者の界面での 熱応力が大きくなり, マイクロクラック力生じて機械的強度が低下する。 また平 均粒径が大きすぎると耐摩耗性が劣化してしまう。
次に, 本発明のフエルールに使用する結晶化ガラスの組成範囲を上記のように 限定した理由について述べる。
S i o2 は, ガラスの主たる構成成分であるとともに結晶成分でもあり, その 含有率は 60〜70%, 好ましくは 62. 3〜67. 5%である。 S i〇。 が 6 0%より少ないと結晶が粗大化し, 70%より多いとガラス溶融時の融液の粘性 力高くなり, 不均質なガラスになってしまう。
A 12 03 も同様に結晶を構成する成分であり, その含有率は 16〜25%, 好ましくは 17〜22%である。 A 1Q 03 力上記の範囲外であると析出結晶が 粗大化し, また 25%より多いとガラス溶融時に失透が発生し易くなる。
L i 2 0も結晶構成成分であり, その含有率は 1. 5〜3%, 好ましくは 2~ 2. 8%である。 L i。 0の含有量が 1. 5%より少ないと所望の結晶が析出し 難くなり, 耐磨耗性が著しく低下するとともに機械的強度や熱膨張特性も劣化す る。 また, 3%より多いと結晶析出量が 70体積%を越えるために被研磨特性が 劣化するとともに, 結晶が粗大化する。
MgOは, ガラスの溶融を促進するとともに結晶を構成する成分であり, その 含有量は 0. 5〜2. 5%, 好ましくは 0. 5〜2%である。 MgOの含有量が 0. 5%より少ないと異種結晶が析出して主結晶量が減少し易くなり, 2. 5% より多くなると結晶析出量が多くなりすぎるとともに結晶が粗大化する。
T i o2 は, ガラスを結晶化させる際に核形成剤として働く必須成分であり, 含有量は 1. 3〜4. 5%, 好ましくは 1. 5〜3. 8%でぁる。 丁 10。 の含 有量が 1. 3 %より少ないと均一な構造の結晶化ガラスが得られなくなり, 4. 5 %より多いとガラス溶融時に失透が発生する。
Z r 02 も T i 02 と同様に核形成剤として働く成分であり, 含有量は 0. 5 〜3%, 好ましくは 0. 5〜2. 5%である。 Z r 02 の含有量が 0. 5%より 少な 、と所望のサィズの結晶を得ることが困難になり, 3 %を越えるとガラス融 液が失透しやすくなるとともに, 析出結晶が粗大化する。
また, T i 02 と Z r〇2 の合計量は, 2〜6. 5%, 好ましくは 2. 5〜6 %の範囲になければならない。 これらの成分の合計量が 2%よりも少ないと核形 成が不十分になり, 異種結晶が析出し易くなるとともに結晶が粗大化し, 6. 5 %よりも多くなるとガラス融液が著しく失透しやすくなる。
κ2 0は, 異種結晶の析出を抑制し, また主結晶の量を制御するために用いら れ, その含有量は, 1〜5. 5%, 好ましくは, 1. 5〜4. 8%である。 Κ2 0の含有量が 1 %よりも少ないと異種結晶が析出して所望の特性が得られなくな つたり, 結晶量が多くなつて被研磨性が劣化する。 一方, 5. 5%より多いと結 晶量が少なくなつて耐磨耗性が著しく低下する。
ΖηΟは, ガラスの溶融を促進するとともに均一性を高める成分であり, その 含有量は 0〜7%, 好ましくは 1〜5%である。 Ζ ηθの含有量が 7%より多く なると異種結晶が析出して熱膨張係数が大きくなり過ぎる。
B a 0も ΖηΟと同様にガラスの溶融を促進するとともに均一性を高める成分 であり, その含有量は 0〜3%, 好ましくは 0. 5~2. 5%である。 B aOの 含有量が 3 %より多くなると異種結晶が析出し易くなる。
上記成分以外にも, ガラス溶融を容易にしたり, 得られる結晶化ガラスの熱膨 張係数を調整する目的で, S r O, C a 0, Na。 〇, B i 03 , B93, PbOから選ばれた成分を合計量で 10%まで, 結晶量や結晶粒径を調整するた めに P。 05 を 5%まで添加することができる。 また, ガラス溶融時の清澄剤と して A sり 03, Sb23 , S nO„等を, それぞれ 2. 5%まで, 好ましく は, それぞれ 1. 5%まで加えることができる。
なお, 本発明においては, フヱルール表面に圧縮応力層を形成しておくことに より, 曲げ強度を大幅に向上させることができる。
圧縮応力層は, 例えば以下の方法で形成することができる。
①表面の L iイオンをそれよりイオン半径の大きなイオンで置換 (イオン交換) する。 ②結晶化ガラスの歪点以上の温度から歪点以下の温度に急冷する。
③析出結晶の種類や量を調整してフ ルールの内部よりも表面の熱膨張係数を 小さく した後, 冷却する。
それでは, 本発明の実施例について説明する。
第 1表乃至第 3表は, 本発明の実施例 (試料 No. 1〜8) 及び比較例 (試料 No. 9〜13) をそれぞれ示している。
試料 No. 1〜11は次のようにして作製した。 まず, 表に示した組成が得ら れるよう適切に選択されたガラス原料を混合し, 1650°Cで 24 h r溶融した ガラスを, 直径 6 Omm深さ lmの力一ボン型の中に铸込み, その後除冷を行つ た。 得られたガラスを最高温度 1100°Cにて結晶化させた後, 貫通孔を有する 結晶化ガラス母材を作製した。 さらに得られた結晶化ガラス母材の表面を研削し て真円度を整えた後, 加熱延伸加工することによって, 第 1図に示すような, 貫 通孔 10を有し, 直径 2. 5 mm, 長さ 10. 5 mmの光ファイバコネクタ用フ エルール 1を得た。 さらに試料 No. 3, 4, 8, 及び 11については, その表 面にイオン交換処理を行い, また, 試料 No. 2, 6, 及び 7については, 急冷 処理によって各々圧縮応力層を形成させた。 なお, イオン交換処理は, 400°C に保った KN〇3 の溶融塩中に試料を浸し 10時間保持して, 結晶化ガラス中の L iイオンを Kイオンで置換することにより行った。 急冷処理は, 300°C/分 の速度でフヱルールを 1000°Cから 100°Cに冷却することにより行った。 試料 No. 12及び 13には, 現在使用されているジルコ二ァ製フヱルール及 び非晶質ガラス製フヱルールをそれぞれ用 L、た。
このようにして得られた各試料について, 析出結晶, 結晶の平均粒径, 結晶量, 曲げ強度, 熱膨張係数, 耐摩耗性及び被研磨特性を評価した。 なお耐摩耗性以外 の評価は, 測定するのに適した形状にフ ルール材を加工して行った。 結果を各 表に示す。
下記表から明らかなように, 本発明の実施例である試料 No. 1~8は, すべ て 20 OMP a以上の高い曲げ強度と, 数 100回の挿抜に耐える耐摩耗性を有 し, 従来の非結晶質ガラス製フエルール (試料 No. 13) に比べて格段に性能 が向上している。

さらに, 上記表から明らかな様に, 熱膨張係数や石英ガラスとの被研磨量の差 も, ジルコ二ァ製フヱルール (試料 No. 12) に比べて大幅に改善されている。 一方, 比較例の試料 No. 9は, 結晶が粗大ィ匕しているため, 曲げ強度ゃ耐摩 耗性が低い。 No. 10は析出結晶が粗大となって曲げ強度ゃ耐摩耗性が低くな り, また結晶量が多すぎるために被研磨特性が劣化している。 試料 N 0. 11は イオン交換の効果によって高い曲げ強度を維持しているものの, 結晶量が少なす ぎるために耐摩耗性が非常に悪い。
なお, 主結晶の同定及び結晶量の定量は粉末 X線回折によって行った (表中の Sは /3—スポジュメン固溶体を, QはS—石英固溶体を夫々示す) 。 結晶の平均 粒径は走査型電子顕微鏡による測定値から算出した。 曲げ強度は直径 2. 5mm, 長さ 36mmの大きさに加工した材料を用い, 3点曲げ法で測定した。 熱膨張係 数はディラトメ一ターにて得られた熱膨張曲線から一 50〜150°Cにおける平 均値を求めた。 耐摩耗性は, J I S C 5961に基づき, ジルコニァ製のスリ —ブに各試料を繰り返し挿抜し, 傷が生じるまでの挿抜回数を求めた。 なお傷の 判定は触針式形状測定器によつて行つた。 被研磨特性の評価は次のようにして行 つた。 研磨剤として酸化セリウムを用い, フヱルト製研磨パッ ドを周速 5 OmZ m i n. で回転させ, 500 g/cm2 の圧力をかけながら 20 X 20 X 2mm の大きさに加工した材料を 30分間研磨し, 厚みの変化量を測定した。 また, 同 条件で石英ガラスを研磨して厚みの変化量を測定した。 続いて両者の厚みの変化 量の差を求め, この値を尺度とした。 つまり, この差が小さいほど石英ガラスに 類似した被研磨特性を有することになる。
次に, 試料 No. 3を光ファイバに取り付けて光コネクタを構成し, 光学特性 の評価を行った。 光ファイバとしてモードフィールド径 9. 5 mの単一モード ファイバコード, 光コネクタとして J I S C 5973に規定されている S C形 光コネクタを用いた。
まず, 本発明による試料 No. 3のフヱルールにエポキシ接着剤 (e p 0 — t e k 353 ND) を用いて前記光ファイバを接着し, 端面をアドバンスト PC研 磨した。 研磨したフヱルール端面の形状は, 通常のジルコ二ァフヱルールと同等 の表面粗さ, 凸球面形状及びファイバ引き込み量が得られた。 研磨したフヱルール 1 5本について, フエルール外径に対するファイバのコア の偏心量を測定した。 その結果を第 2図に示す。 第 2図から明らかなように, フ ヱルール外径に対するファイバのコアの偏心量は, 平均 0. 7 6 111であり, 通 常のジルコ二ァフヱルールを用いた場合に比較して遜色のな 、分布が得られた。 次に波長 1. 3 1 のレーザ ·ダイォード光源を用いて, 組み立てた 2個の 光コネクタブラグを接続したときの接続損失を測定した。 使用した光コードの長 さは 2 mであり, 試料を取り付けた端部の他の端部には通常のジルコニァフェル —ルによる S C形光コネクタを取り付け, 光学特性の測定に供した。 2 1通りの 組合わせについて測定した結果を第 3図に示す。 第 3図から明らかなように, 平 均の接続損失は 0. 2 1 d B, 最悪でも 0. 5 d B以下であつた。 また, 反射減 衰量は全て 5 0 d B以上であった。 これらの値は, 高性能が要求される光通信網 において十分実用に耐える特性である。 以上, S Cコネクタへの適用例について 述べたが, この実施例は, 本発明の適用範囲を限定するものではなく, S Cコネ クタ以外の光コネクタのフヱルールにも適用可能であることは言うまでもない。 以上説明したように, 本発明のフヱルールは, 機械的強度ゃ耐摩耗性に優れ, 石英ファイバに近い熱膨張係数と被研磨特性を有し, また単一モード光ファイバ の接続に用いられるジルコ二ァ製フ工ルールと同等の寸法精度を有する。
しかもジルコ二ァ製フヱルールより安価に製造できる。 それゆえ光ファイバコ ネクタ用フヱルールとして好適であり, 光通信網の整備に寄与するものである。 産業上の利用可能性
以上のように, 本発明にかかる光ファイバコネクタ用フヱルールは, S Cコネ クタや S Cコネクタ以外の光通信網の整備に用いられる光コネクタのフヱルール として好適である。

L i 2 0 1. 5-3%, MgO 0. 5〜2. 5%, T i 0o 1. 3〜4. 5%, Z r〇2 0. 5〜3%, T i 02 +Z r〇2 2-6. 5%, K。 0 1-5. 5%, Ζ ηθ 0〜7%, Β a 0 0〜3 %の組成を有し, 平均粒径が 2 β m以下の /3—スポジュメン固溶体又は β一石英固溶体を 30〜 70体積%析 出してなり, 曲げ強度が 20 OMP a以上, 一 50〜150°Cにおける熱膨張係 数が一 10〜50X10—7Z°Cの範囲にある結晶化ガラスからなることを特徴と する光ファイバコネクタ用フヱルール。
2. 請求項 1記載の光ファイバコネクタ用フヱルールにおいて, 外表面に圧 縮応力層が形成されてなることを特徴とする光ファイバコネクタ用フエルール。
