  • This invention relates to a retaining device suitable for, although not limited to, use in preventing displacement of containers during transportation of the same. More particularly, the invention relates to a retaining device for in use retaining containers in a stacked configuration when in transit.

More particularly, the retaining device 10 is locatable proximate the corners 15c of two or more containers 15 such that the retaining device 10 engages a container 15 at a corner 15c thereof.
  • the retaining device 10 is manufactured from any suitable material, including metallic material and synthetic plastics material. Typically, the retaining device 10 is manufactured from polypropylene.
  • the retaining device 10 comprises a body portion in the form of a substantially planar body plate 12, and engaging means 14 in the form of a plurality of protrusions extending from the body plate 12 and at a substantially right angle to the body plate 12.
  • the body plate 12 includes two opposed faces 12a and 12b and is dimensioned such that the retaining device 10 simultaneously engages two or more neighbouring containers 15. Particularly, the body plate 12 is dimensioned for at least partially resting upon an upper edge 15e of the container walls 15a and 15b of the neighbouring containers 15.
  • the plurality of protrusions 14 is arranged such that a single retaining device 10 is capable of simultaneously engaging a number of containers 15 in use.
  • the protrusions 14 extend from both faces of the body plate 12 such that the retaining device 10 is adapted simultaneously to engage both containers 15 that are located adjacent each other in a same plane, as well as containers 15 that are stacked one atop the another.
  • the protrusions 14 extend in two-by-two matrices from both faces 12a and 12b of the body plate 12.
  • the retaining device 10 includes sharpened protrusions 14 in the form of barbs, pegs, spikes or the like 14a extending from one face 12a of the body plate 12, while protrusions 14 in the form of corner formations 14b extend from the opposite face 12b of the body plate 12.
  • the body plate 12 When the retaining device 10 is located in use, the body plate 12 rests upon the container walls 15a and 15b of neighbouring containers 15 arranged in the same plane, the arrangement being such that the barbs, pegs, spikes or the like 14a extending from one face 12a of the body plate 12 are arranged so as to pierce a base wall 15d of a container 15 that is located in a second layer atop the first layer of containers 15 ( Figures 5 to 7).
  • the length of each barb, peg, spike or the like 14a varies between 4mm and 12mm and is typically 8mm.
  • the corner formations 14b that extend from the opposite face 12b of the body plate 12 are dimensioned matingly to engage the corners of neighbouring containers 15.
  • Each corner formation 14b includes an inner corner zone 14b(i) and an outer corner zone 14b(ii).
  • Two or more corner formations 14b extend in equally spaced orientation from the body plate 12 such that the outer corner zones 14b(ii) of the corner formations 14b face each other.

  • the retaining device 10 is located such that the outer corner zone 14b(ii) of each corner formation 14b is disposed against the inner surface 15c(ii) of a container corner 15c such that neighbouring containers 15 are maintained in abutting relationship, the arrangement being such that the walls 15a and 15b of abutting containers 15 are held captive between neighbouring corner formations 14b.
  • four containers 15 are positioned adjacent one another to form a first layer and the retaining device 10 is then positioned at a junction common to a corner of each neighbouring container 15, as shown in Figures 6 and 7.
  • a second layer of containers 15 are stacked on the first layer such that the spikes 14a of the retaining device 10 pierce the base wall 15d of the container 15 thereby engaging the retaining device 10 with the containers 15 (shown in Figure 5).
  • the body plate 12 is semi-circular in plan view and the spikes 14a and corner formations 14b are located on respective first and second faces 12a and 12b of the body plate 12 in one-by-two matrices.
  • this second embodiment of the retaining device 10 is positioned adjacent a wall 18, for example of the transportation means in which the containers 15 are transported. In this manner, the containers 15 can be snugly packed against the wall 18 of the transportation means.
  • the diametric edge 22 of the semi-circular body plate 12 is arranged flush against the wall 18 of the transportation means, as shown in Figure 10.
  • Figures 11 and 12 illustrate two further embodiments of the invention.
  • the retaining device illustrated in Figure 11 includes sharpened protrusions 14a that extend from both faces of the body plate 12.
  • the retaining device in Figure 12 includes sharpened protrusions 24a that extend from one face 12a of the body plate 12, and retainer walls 24b extending from the opposite face 12b.
  • the retainer walls 24b are dimensioned such that, in use, neighbouring containers 15 are maintained in abutting relationship, the arrangement being such that the walls 15a, 15b of abutting containers 15 are held captive between two retainer walls 24b.
  • the retaining device is locatable between neighbouring containers 15 such that the retainer walls 24b maintain the containers 15 in spaced orientation relative to each other.
  • the engaging means also includes retaining ribs 26 for facilitating friction grip of container walls 15a, 15b so as further to limit displacement of containers 15 relative to each other.
  • the retaining ribs 26 are arranged on and extend from one or more of the protrusions 14, 24a, and 24b.
  • the retaining ribs 26 are arranged on and extend from the inner corner zone 14b(i) and/or outer corner zone 14b(ii) of a corner formation 14b, and from the retainer walls 24b. It is envisaged that the retaining device 10 will be useful in the transportation of stacked boxes, crates or the like containers 15, by preventing displacement of containers relative to each other, despite vibratory forces present during transportation. It is further envisaged that the retaining device 10 will prevent containers 15 stacked in an upper layer from sliding off a lower layer, as well as the relative displacement of adjacent containers in a same layer.
  • the body plate 12 need not be circular or semi-circular in plan view but may have any one of a variety of shapes; and the retaining device 10 need not have barbs, pegs, spikes or the like 14a on a first face 12a and corner formations 14b on a second face 12b of the body plate 12 but may have either barbs, pegs, spikes or the like 14a or corner formations 14b on both faces of the body plate 12.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un dispositif de rétention (10) conçu pour retenir deux ou plusieurs récipients (15) dans une orientation qui ne leur permet pas de se déplacer sensiblement les uns par rapport aux autres, par exemple, pendant le transport. Le dispositif de rétention (10) est caractérisé en ce qu'il comprend une plaque de corps sensiblement plane (12); et un organe de contact faisant sensiblement saillie depuis la plaque de corps (12), dont les dimensions ont été choisies pour qu'il mette en contact un récipient (15). L'organe de contact comprend un certain nombre de saillies (14) qui peuvent se présenter comme des barbelures, des chevilles, des pointes ou encore des formations d'angle (14b) ou des parois de rétention (24b) qui font saillie depuis les deux côtés (12a, 12b) de la plaque de corps (12), de manière à ce que le dispositif de rétention (10) s'adapte simultanément pour mettre en prise les récipients adjacents (15) disposés l'un près de l'autre dans un même plan ainsi que les récipients (15) disposés les uns près des autres dans un même plan de même que les récipients (15) empilés les uns sur les autres.
