Definitions
- the present invention relates to a support device.
- the present invention relates to a support device for electrical conductors or leads.
- Modern day gardening machinery such as lawn-mowers or edge-trimmers can either be petrol driven or electrically operable.
- One problem that is often encountered when using electrically operable machinery is that the electrical lead or cable attached to the machine falls in the way of the machine. Thus a user continuously has to move the lead away or risk cutting the lead, which can result in fatal accidents. This is a disturbance in the use of the machine and lengthens the time taken to perform the task of lawn-mowing.
- a support device includes a base being adapted to be removably supported on a support surface such as a lawn; an elongated support member extending from the base and being adapted to support a flexible electrical conductor; and biasing means associated with the support member and being adapted to absorb slack in the conductor.
- the base member may include a locating projection adapted to be pressed into a support surface.
- the locating projection may be a spike.
- the support member may include a number of elongated rods linearly joined together.
- Each elongated rod may be a hollow tube.
- Each elongated rod may be made of fibre glass composite material.
- Each elongated rod may have a length of between a half metre to one-and-a- half metres.
- Adjacent elongated rods may be joined together by couplings.
- the couplings may be made of plastics material.
- the support member may be swivelably joined to the base.
- the biasing means may be constituted by an inherent flexible resiliency in the support member.
- the biasing means may include a flexible resiliency in each of the elongated rods.
- the biasing means may include a biasing member, such as a spring, located between the support member and the base.
- At least one coupling may be a spring.
- the spring may be a coil spring or a leaf spring.
- the biasing means may be adapted, in use, to bias the support member vertically.
- the support device may be adapted to support the conductor externally of the support member by means of clips joined to the support member.
- the support device maybe adapted to support the conductor internally of the support member by passing the conductor through the hollow tubes.
- Figure 1 a schematic view of a first embodiment of a support device in accordance with the invention.
- Figure 2 a schematic view of a second embodiment of a support device in accordance with the invention.
- the support device 10 includes a support member 12 constituted by a number of longitudinal tubular elements 12.1, 12.2 ... 12.n that are swivelably joined to each other by means of biasing elements in the form of springs 14.1, 14.2 ... 14.n.
- the springs 14.1, 14.2 ... 14.n can be any suitable type of spring but are preferably coil springs.
- the springs 14.1, 14.2 ... 14.n are adapted to bias the longitudinal elements 12 vertically.
- the longitudinal element 12.1 terminates in a base member 16, which is adapted to be secured to the ground or soil.
- the base member 16 is preferably in the form of a spike 18, which can be pressed into the ground or soil at a suitable location.
- the support device 10 is adapted to support an electrical cable or lead 20 extending from a machine such as a conventional lawn-mower 22.
- a machine such as a conventional lawn-mower 22.
- the support member 12 and the springs 14.1, 14.2 ... 14.n are hollow, or tubular, allowing the lead 20 to be passed therethrough.
- the lead 20 extends from the lawn-mower 22 and enters the support device 10 at its apex 24.
- the lead 20 substantially extends though the length of the support device 10 and exits at the bottom 26 relatively near to the spike 18.
- the lead can then extend to and terminate in a suitable plug and socket connection 28.
- more longitudinal elements 12.1, 12.2 ... 12.n and springs 14.1, 14.2 ... 14.n can be joined to the support device 10 in order to increase the total area which the support device 10 can cover.
- the support device 30 includes a base 32, adapted to be located on a support surface such as the ground, for supporting a support member 34.
- the support member 34 includes a number of longitudinal tubular elements or rods 36.1,36.2...36.n that are substantially linearly joined to each other by means of couplings 38.1,38.2...38.n.
- the base 32 is made of a metal, such as aluminium, and includes a spike that can be pressed into the ground or soil at a suitable location.
- the rods 36.1, 36.2...36.n are manufactured from a fibre glass composite material that is resiliently flexible. The resiliency of the rods 36.1, 36.2...36.n causes the support member 34 to extend linearly away from the base 32, so that when the base 32 is located on the ground the support member 34 will be biased substantially vertically.
- Each of the rods 36.1,36.2...36.n has a length of between a half metre and one-and-a-half metres, which is preferably about one metre.
- the rod 36.1 has a diameter of about sixteen millimetres, while the remaining rods 36.2...36.n have a diameter of about fourteen niillimetres.
- the couplings 38.1,38.2...38.n are provided with oppositely located sockets being adapted to receive and locate the rods 36.1,36.2...36.n by means of a friction fit.
- the couplings 38.1,38.2...38.n are made of a plastics material such as acetyl plastics.
- the support device 30 is adapted to support an electrical cable or lead 40 extending from a garden tool 42, such as a conventional lawn-mower, weed- eater etc.
- a garden tool 42 such as a conventional lawn-mower, weed- eater etc.
- the lead 40 can be externally clipped to the support member, preferably the rods 36.1,36.2...36.n and the couplings 38.1,38.2...38.n will be hollow to allow the lead 40 to be passed centrally through the support member 34.
- the lead 40 extends from the garden tool 42 and enters the support device 30 at its apex 44.
- the lead 38 extends through the length of the support member 34 and exits at the base 32 for connection to an electrical supply.
- rods 36.1,36.2...36.n and couplings 38.1,38.2...38.n can be joined to each other so that a suitable required area can be covered by the support device 30.
- a spring 46 can be located between the base 32 and the rod 36.1 to assist in allowing bending of the support member 34 relative to the base 32.
- a person can mow a lawn in the vicinity of the support device 10,30 without the lead 20,40 lying on the ground in the vicinity of the garden tool 42.
- the tension of the lead 20,40 causes the support member 34 to bend relative to the base 16,32 at the springs 14.1,14.2...14.n or rods 36.1,36.2...36.n.
- the support member 12,34 can be bent until it lies substantially horizontal, i.e. parallel to the ground.
- the springs 14.1, 14.2 ... 14.n or the resiliency of the rods 36.1,36.2...36.n bias the support member 12,34 vertically, thereby absorbing any slack in the lead 20,40 and preventing the lead 20,40 from lying on the ground.
- Each rod 36.1,36.2...36.n can be integrally formed with a coupling 38.1,38.2...38.n at one end.
