Definitions
- the invention relates to a process for the preparation of metal complexes containing carbene ligands by reacting metal compounds with ligand precursome II and / or III and the use of the metal complexes thus obtained as catalysts.
- Metal complexes which contain a metal from the 6th to 10th group of the Periodic Table of the Elements as the central atom and which have ligands bonded to this metal atom are increasingly being used as catalysts for chemical reactions. They are particularly important in reactions that lead to the formation of carbon-carbon, carbon-hydrogen, carbon-oxygen and carbon-nitrogen bonds. Metal complex catalysts are often used in technical processes. Examples of such processes are the hydroformylation of olefins, the hydrogenation, for example of olefins, aldehydes or ketones, metathesis reactions and telomerization.
- the ligands that coordinate to the metal atom have an immense influence on the catalytic behavior of the metal complex. On the one hand, they have a stabilizing effect, which is why they are often added in excess in catalytic reactions. On the other hand, the activity and selectivity of the catalyst can be controlled within a wide range via the type of ligand.
- Mainly nitrogen compounds for example amines, or phosphorus (II) compounds, for example phosphines or phosphites, are used as ligands.
- N-heterocyclic carbenes have also been used increasingly as ligands in metal complexes.
- ligands By using these ligands, considerable advantages can be achieved over catalysts that only contain phosphorus ligands.
- N-heterocyclic carbenes as Ligands can be found in reviews that document the current state of the art (WA Herrmann, Angewandte Chemie 2002, 114, 1342-1363; WA Herrmann, T. Weskamp, VPW Böhm, Advances in Organometailich Chemistry, 2001, Vol. 48, page 1 - 69; L. Jafarpour, SP Nolan, Adv. Organomet. Chem. 2001, 46, 181; D. Bourissou, O. Guerret, FP Gabbai, G. Bertrand, Chem. Rev. 100, 39).
- N-heterocyclic carbene as ligand in a palladium complex, which is used as a catalyst for the telomerization of 1,3-butadiene with methanol, is also described (R. Jackstell, M. G ⁇ mez Andreu, A. Frisch, K. Selvakumar , A. Zapf, H. Klein, A. Spannenberg, D. Röttger, O. Briel, R. Karch, M. Beller, Angewandte Chemie 2002, 114, 128).

- telomerization is generally understood to mean the reaction of olefins with conjugated double bonds (conjugated dienes) in the presence of a nucleophile (telogen).
- conjugated dienes conjugated double bonds
- telogen conjugated dienes
- the main products obtained are compounds which are composed of two equivalents of diene and one equivalent of the nucleophile.
- telomerization of dienes is described in detail in the specialist literature (WO 91/09822, US 4,642,392, US 4,831,183, DE 2,137,291, US 5,030,792, US 4,334,117, US 4,356,333, US 5,057,631, EP 0 296 550, WO 98/08 794, DE 195 23 335).
- the products of the telomerization reaction are of technical importance as versatile precursors for solvents, plasticizers, fine chemicals and active ingredient intermediates.
- the compounds octadienol, octadienyl ether or octadienyl ester obtainable from 1,3-butadiene are potential intermediates in processes for the preparation of corresponding alkenes.
- Telomerization of dienes with nucleophiles is a technically interesting method for the refinement of inexpensive, industrially available dienes. Due to the good availability, the use of butadiene, isoprene or these dienes is of particular interest containing cracker slices. To date, however, the telomerization of 1,3-butadiene has only been practically used by Kuraray in the fine chemicals sector for the synthesis of 1-octanol. Reasons that prevent the widespread use of telomerization processes include lack of catalyst activity, catalyst productivity and selectivity problems of telomerization catalysts. The known telomerization processes thus lead to high catalyst costs and / or by-products which prevent large-scale implementation.
- Catalysts with palladium as the central atom and phosphorus ligands are mainly used.
- these catalysts In the telomerization of butadiene with methanol, for example, these catalysts generally provide mixtures of the listed products la, lb, 2, 3. Main products are the desired technically important linear telomers la and lb. However, significant portions of the branched telomer 2 and 1,3,7-octatriene 3 are formed.
- 4-vinyl-1-cyclohexene Diels-Alder product of butadiene
- Diels-Alder product of butadiene is produced in variable yields and - as a rule only in small amounts - other by-products.
- This spectrum of products is generally also found when other nucleophiles with active H atoms are used, the corresponding residues of the respective nucleophile taking the place of the methoxy group.
- all non-cyclic olefins with at least two conjugated double bonds can be used in the telomerization according to the process according to the invention.
- the use of 1,3-butadiene and isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) is preferred. Both the pure dienes and mixtures containing these dienes can be used.
- Mixtures of 1,3-butadiene or isoprene with other C 4 -hydrocarbons and / or C 5 -hydrocarbons are preferably used as mixtures containing 1,3-butadiene / isoprene.
- Such mixtures occur, for example, in cracking processes for the production of ethene, in which refinery gases, naphtha, gas oil, LPG (liquified petroleum gas), NGL (natural gas liquid) etc. are implemented.
- the C 4 cuts obtained as a by-product in these processes contain different amounts of 1,3-butadiene, depending on the cracking process.
- Typical 1,3-butadiene concentrations in the C-section are 20-70% 1,3-butadiene.
- Alkynes especially vinyl acetylene, on the other hand, can act as moderators in the telomerization reaction. It is therefore advantageous to remove the C4-alkynes and possibly also kummulenes such as 1,2-butadiene beforehand (for example in accordance with DE 195 23 335). If possible, this can be done using physical methods such as distillation or extraction.
- the alkynes can be chemically converted to alkenes or alkanes via selective hydrogenations and the cumulative dienes are reduced to monoenes. Processes for such hydrogenations are state of the art and are described, for example, in WO 98/12160, EP-A-0 273 900, DE-A-37 44 086 or US 4,704,492.

- glycerin for example glycerin, glucose, sucrose, hydroxy compounds such as, for example, ⁇ -hydroxyacetic acid ester, carboxylic acids such as, for example, acetic acid, propanoic acid, butanoic acid, isobutanoic acid, benzoic acid, 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid, 1, 4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, 1,2 , 4-benzenetricarboxylic acid, ammonia, primary amines such as methylamine, ethylamine, propylamine, butylamine, octylamine, 2,7-octadienylamine, dodecyclamine, aniline, ethylenediamine or hexamethylenediamine, secondary amines such as dimethylamine, diethylamine, N-methylaniline, bis (2nd , 7-octadienyl) amine, dicyclohexylamine, methylcycl

- 2,7-octadien-l-ol can be formed from water and butadiene in the presence of the telomerization catalyst, 2,7-octadienylamine from ammonia and 1,3-butadiene, etc.
- Nucleophiles (XIII) used with particular preference are water, methanol, ethanol, n-butanol, allyl alcohol, 2-methoxyethanol, phenol, ethylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, glycerol, glucose, sucrose, acetic acid, butanoic acid, 1, 2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, Ammonia, dimethylamine and diethylamine.
- the telomerization is preferably carried out in the presence of a solvent.
- the nucleophile used is generally used as solvent if it is present as a liquid under reaction conditions. However, other solvents can also be used. The solvents used should be largely inert.
