Definitions
- the present invention relates to the biomedical field. It relates, more particularly, a stimulator of salivary glands.
- Dry mouth problems are common in the general population (0.5 to 20%) and are related to certain pathologies or to side effects of drugs.
- the most common condition is Sjögren's syndrome, also known as dry syndrome.
- Another solution comprises the implantation of a device housed in an oral cavity or peri-oral, close to a nervously sensitive area, which acts on the salivary glands. by nerve stimulation by means of electrodes.
- a device housed in an oral cavity or peri-oral, close to a nervously sensitive area, which acts on the salivary glands. by nerve stimulation by means of electrodes.
- Such a device is very effective but it is also relatively bulky (between 5 and 18 mm in height and between 2 and 6 mm in diameter) and complex to implement.
- the present invention aims to provide a miniaturized version of this type of device, the implantation does not create discomfort for the patient.
- the invention relates to a saliva stimulating device, of the type comprising an electronic module formed of a plurality of components including at least one pair of electrodes positioned to be in contact with the outside.
- This device is characterized in that it further comprises a dental implant connection around which the electronic module is folded to form a three-dimensional volume.
- the components of the electronic module are mounted on a printed circuit divided into several zones connected by fold lines which allow it to be folded around the dental implant fitting. This is the outer part of a dental implant that removably mates with its pivot stuck in the gum of the patient.
- the device according to the invention also comprises the following main features:
- each zone of the printed circuit forms an outer face of said volume
- the electronic module is encapsulated in resin.
- the invention also relates to a method of producing the device defined above. It consists mainly of: - obtaining a printed circuit cut to form a development of said volume,
- FIG. 1 shows, at a and b, two overall views of a stimulator according to the invention
- FIG. 2 is a plan view of the printed circuit used in this stimulator.
- FIG. 3 illustrates, at a and b, the device according to the invention, during an intermediate step of its manufacture. Mode (s) of realization of the invention
- the stimulator according to the invention comprises, mainly, a dental implant connector 10 and an electronic module 12 folded around this connector, the whole being molded in a capsule 14 hardenable resin, epoxy type .
- the connector 10 known to those skilled in the art under the English term hub, is preferably made of titanium and has a hexagonal section tubular shape. It constitutes the external part of a dental implant that removably mates with its pivot stuck in the gum of the patient.
- the electronic module 12 is based on a PCB 16 or PCB (English Printed Circuit Board) on which are mounted a plurality of electronic components and which is folded around the hub 10 in a compact three-dimensional volume.
- Figure 2 shows the outer face of the module 12 in plan, that is to say before it is folded. Its printed circuit board 16 is shaped and dimensioned to provide a volume development mentioned above.
- the PCB 16 has five distinct areas A, B, C, D and E following, from right to left in the drawing and separated by fold lines symbolized in hatched portions. Each zone corresponds to one face of the PCB, once shaped.
- Area B is rectangular in shape and is the main face because it carries the essential components of the stimulator. It is provided on this face with two transistors 18 and, on the opposite face, a microcontroller (not shown) managing the functions of the device.
- Zone B is connected on one side to zone A by a first fold line BA and on the other side to zone C by a second fold line BC.
- Zones A and C have shapes which correspond globally to those which one wishes to give to the wings of the stimulator.
- Zone C ends in a tip, similar to a triangle, one of whose sides is connected to the zone D by a third fold line CD.
- This zone, of rectangular shape, is extended by the zone E, also rectangular, via a fourth fold line DE perpendicular to the line CD.
- the zone E serves as a support for a humidity sensor 20 composed of a plurality of sensors 22 each disposed on an arm 24 (FIG. 3a) moving away from the zone E, approximately at 90.degree. plan.
- Zone E also carries a remote control unit 26 sensitive to infrared waves. It is used for communication with the pacemaker, including its standby. Zones A and C serve as a respective support - and contact with one of their poles - two batteries 28 and 30 which cover most of them. They are extended respectively by tabs 32 and 34 with hatching folded zones (not referenced) allowing them to be brought back to the batteries to ensure the connection of their other pole to the PCB.
- Two pairs of electrodes 36 and 38 are still disposed on the PCB 16.
- the two electrodes 36 are carried by the zone B, while the two electrodes 38 are on the zone D.
- the inner face of the PCB 16, defining the inner walls of the device, is not shown in the drawing. It is also equipped with various components that participate in the operation of the device, such as resistors or capacitors.
- the components carried by the PCB 16 are those that equip an electronic pacemaker salivary glands. They will not be described here in more detail. The invention does not, in fact, the nature and functionality of these components, but on how to bring them as compact as possible.
- the tongues 32 and 34 are folded over the batteries 28 and 30 and connected to them. by means of a conductive glue.
- the device being constituted it is easy, at this time, to perform the programming of the microcontroller and the usual electrical tests.
- the assembly is then folded around the dental implant fitting 10. This is disposed coaxially with the central zone B and the other areas are folded according to the different fold lines.
- the PCB 16 is held in position by bonding zones A and C on two of the facets of the hub. With the construction described and shown, the two pairs of electrodes 36 and 38 are thus apparent, clear of the rest of the PCB and located near the base 40 of the connector 10 ( Figure 1). Of course, the dimensions of the hub 10 and the areas of the PCB 16 must be proportioned so that, once folded, the electronic module 12 is adjusted at best on the connector 10, while allowing easy access to its base 40.
- a metal cap 42 takes place at the top of the device, the opposite side to the base 40. It has a first portion 42a of semicircular overall shape. It has a hole leaving the hub 10 cleared and forms a plateau. A second portion 42b, inclined relative to the first, covers the E zone of the PCB, parallel to it. This portion is provided with a notch allowing the humidity sensor 20 to be passed. [0031] In order to consolidate the assembly of the elements and to stiffen the device, the whole is finally molded into the capsule 14 made of epoxy material, which is flush with the end. Sensors 22 of the humidity sensor 20 and electrodes 36 and 38.
- the epoxy material is chosen to be transparent, so as not to interfere with the transmissions of the infrared waves of the remote control unit 26.
- the final result is similar to a current dental reconstruction.
- the base 40 of the connector 10 is left exposed to allow the assembly of the device on the pivot of the implant.
- the ends of the electrodes 36 and 38 are also disengaged, for example by milling, thus allowing them to come into contact with the adjacent tissues of the lingual and oral nerves.
- the sensors 22 are released from the resin.
- the device can be easily housed in place of a wisdom tooth, for example, on a pivot previously installed by a specialist.
- the device can be removed or replaced, especially when the batteries are worn.
- the stimulator is not positioned in front of an opposing tooth and plays no direct mechanical role in chewing food.
