Abstract

 この発明は、高品質の光出力を得ることを可能にするための構造を備えた固体レーザモジュール等に関する。当該固体レーザモジュールは、ウィンドウを有する真空容器を備え、この真空容器内に、ヒートシンク、固体レーザ媒質、一対の透明部材が一体的に組み立てられた状態で収納されている。固体レーザ媒質及び一対の透明部材は、それぞれディスク形状を有し、固体レーザ媒質を一対の透明部材が挟んでいる。一対の透明部材それぞれの熱伝導率は、固体レーザ媒質の熱伝導率より高い。ヒートシンクは、固体レーザ媒質を間に挟んだ一対の透明部材の一部を同時に把持する形状を有し、このヒートシンクと固体レーザ媒質との間に、固体レーザ媒質の熱伝導率より低い熱伝導率を有する断熱領域が設けられている。

固体レーザモジュール、光増幅器及びレーザ発振器
技術分野
[0001] この発明は、励起光の照射により内部で放出光を発生させる固体レーザ媒質を含 む固体レーザモジュール、該固体レーザモジュールを含む光増幅器、及び該固体レ 一ザモジュールを含むレーザ発振器に関するものである。
背景技術
[0002] 固体レーザ媒質を含む光増幅器は、励起光源力 出力された励起光を固体レーザ 媒質に照射することにより、固体レーザ媒質に含まれる活性元素 (例えば希土類元 素又は遷移金属元素)を励起する。このとき、固体レーザ媒質内では誘導放出現象 により所定波長の放出光が発生する。また、レーザ発振器は、このような光増幅器及 び共振器により構成される。例えば、固体レーザ媒質が Yb添加 YAGである場合、励 起光源はレーザダイオードであり、増幅し得る光の波長は 1030nmである。
[0003] このような構造を有する光増幅器又はレーザ発振器では、動作時に固体レーザ媒 質が発熱する。そのため、安定した動作を得るとともに高品質の光出力を得るには、 固体レーザ媒質を放熱又は冷却する必要がある。例えば、特許文献 1に開示された レーザ発振器は、活性元素を含まない多結晶質透明セラミックと、該多結晶質透明 セラミックに接した固体レーザ媒質 (活性元素が添加された多結晶質透明セラミック) と、これらを同時に把持するよう設けられたヒートシンクとで構成された固体レーザモ ジュールを備える。このような構成を有する固体レーザモジュールによれば、固体レ 一ザ媒質で発生した熱は活性元素を含まない多結晶質透明セラミックやヒートシンク を伝搬し、該固体レーザ媒質の温度上昇が抑制される。

発明の開示
発明が解決しょうとする課題
[0004] 発明者らは、上述の従来技術にっ 、て検討した結果、以下のような課題を発見した 。すなわち、特許文献 1に開示されたレーザ発振器であっても、固体レーザ媒質の放 熱又は冷却は不十分であり、高品質の光出力が得られない場合があった。
[0005] この発明は上述のような課題を解決するためになされたものであり、高品質の光出 力を得るための構造を備えた固体レーザモジュール、該固体レーザモジュールを含 む光増幅器、及び該固体レーザモジュールを含むレーザ発振器を提供することを目 的としている。
課題を解決するための手段
[0006] この発明に係る固体レーザモジュールは、固体レーザ媒質と、該固体レーザ媒質を 直接挟むよう配置された第 1及び第 2部材と、ヒートシンクと、固体レーザ媒体とヒート シンクとの間に設けられた断熱領域とを備える。
[0007] 上記固体レーザ媒質は、第 1波長の励起光により励起される活性元素が添加され、 照射された該励起光に応答して内部で第 2波長の放出光を発生させる。上記第 1部 材は、固定レーザ媒質の第 1主面に直接接した状態で設けられる。また、第 1部材は 、励起光及び放出光の双方に対して透明な材料力 なるとともに固体レーザ媒質より も高い熱伝導率を有する。上記第 2部材は、固定レーザ媒質の第 1主面と対向する 第 2主面に直接接した状態で設けられる。また、第 2部材は、励起光及び放出光の双 方に対して透明な材料力 なるとともに固体レーザ媒質よりも高い熱伝導率を有する 。上記ヒートシンクは、固体レーザ媒質を間に挟んだ第 1及び第 2部材それぞれの少 なくとも一部を、該固体レーザ媒質力も所定距離離間した状態で把持するよう配置さ れる。上記断熱領域は、第 1主面と第 2主面とを連絡している固体レーザ媒質の側面 と、ヒートシンクとの間に設けられており、該固体レーザ媒質よりも低い熱伝導率を有 する。なお、固体レーザ媒質とヒートシンクとの間に設けられた断熱領域は、固体又 は液体であってもよいし、空気その他の気体であってもよいし、真空であってもよい。
[0008] さらに、固体レーザ媒質の第 1主面に少なくとも一部が接する第 1部材の面は、該 第 1主面よりも広い面積を有するのが好ましい。同様に、固体レーザ媒質の第 2主面 に少なくとも一部が接する第 2部材の面も、該第 2主面よりも広い面積を有するのが 好ましい。この構成により、第 1及び第 2部材は、固体レーザ媒質の側面とヒートシン クとの間隔を規定するためのスぺーサとして機能する。
[0009] この発明に係る固体レーザモジュールは、ヒートシンクを冷却するための冷却装置 をさらに備えるのが好ましい。また、ヒートシンクを加熱するための加熱装置がさらに 設けられてもよい。また、この発明に係る固体レーザモジュールは、内部が所定の真 空度まで減圧された密閉容器を備えてもよい。この密閉容器は、少なくとも、固体レ 一ザ媒質、第 1部材及び第 2部材を収納する空間を有するとともに、励起光及び放出 光を透過させるためのウィンドウを有するのが好ましい。
[0010] この発明に係る固体レーザモジュールにおいて、固体レーザ媒質の第 1及び第 2 主面にそれぞれ直接接触した状態で配置された第 1及び第 2部材は、いずれも固体 レーザ媒質もよりも高い熱伝導率を有する。また、固体レーザ媒質の側面とヒートシン クとの間に設けられた断熱領域は、固定レーザ媒質よりも低い熱伝導率を有する。こ のことから、励起光照射により固体レーザ媒質内で発生した熱は、固体レーザ媒質の 両主面に接している部材へ伝えられ、さらにヒートシンクへ伝導していく。一方、固体 レーザ媒質の側面力 ヒートシンク側へ伝導して 、く熱量は僅かである。したがって、 固体レーザ媒質への励起光照射に起因した熱レンズ効果が低減され、固体レーザ 媒質から出力される誘導放出光の波面の乱れが効果的に抑制される。その結果、高 品質の光出力が得られる。また、ヒートシンクを冷却するための冷却装置や、ヒートシ ンクを加熱するための加熱装置が設けられた場合、固体レーザ媒質の温度が適切に 設定されるため、好適な条件の下で固体レーザ媒質における光増幅が可能になる。 また、固体レーザ媒質等を内部に収納する真空容器が設けられた場合、固体レーザ 媒質等の結露が防止される。
[0011] この発明に係る光増幅器は、上述のような構造を有する固体レーザモジュール (こ の発明に係る固体レーザモジュール)と、該固体レーザモジュールに含まれる固体レ 一ザ媒質に励起光を照射するための励起光源とを備える。当該光増幅器では、励起 光源から照射された励起光により固体レーザ媒質内の活性元素が励起される。この ように活性元素が励起されている間に固体レーザ媒質に入射した所定波長の光は 固体レーザ媒質において増幅される。当該光増幅器では、固体レーザ媒質を含む 固体レーザモジュールが上述のような構造を有するため、高品質かつ高出力の増幅 光が得られる。
[0012] この発明に係るレーザ発振器は、上述のような構造を有する固体レーザモジュール (この発明に係る固体レーザモジュール)と、該固体レーザモジュールに含まれる固 体レーザ媒質に励起光を照射する励起光源と、該固体レーザモジュールに含まれる 固体レーザ媒質が共振光路上に配置された共振器とを備える。当該レーザ発振器 では、励起光源から照射された励起光が固体レーザ媒質内の活性元素を励起する ことで、該固体レーザ媒質内で誘導放出現象が生じる。このとき発生した誘導放出光 が共振器の共振光路上を往復することにより、該共振器カゝらレーザ光が得られる。ま た、当該レーザ発振器では、固体レーザ媒質を含む固体レーザモジュールが上述の ような構造を有するため、高品質かつ高出力のレーザ光が得られる。

発明を実施するための最良の形態
[0018] 以下、この発明に係る固体レーザモジュール、光増幅器及びレーザ共振器の各実 施例を、図 1〜図 11を用いて詳細に説明する。なお、図面の説明において、同一部 位、同一要素には同一符号を付して重複する説明を省略する。また、図面の寸法比 率は説明のものと必ずしも一致しておらず、各要素の寸法や材質等は一例にすぎな い。
[0019] まず、この発明に係る固体レーザモジュールの一実施例について説明する。図 1は 、この発明に係る固体レーザモジュールの一実施例の構成を示す図である。この図 1 に示された固体レーザモジュール 10は、基盤 101及び支持部 102、 103により支持 されており、真空ポンプ 104、第 1液体窒素保存タンク 111、第 2液体窒素保存タンク 112、冷却装置外壁 113、真空容器 121、ヒートシンク 130及び温度コントローラ 141 等を備える。なお、真空容器 121は、所定の真空度にまで内部が減圧された密閉容 器を意味する。また、真空容器 121内に収納された固体レーザモジュール 10の主要 部については後述する。
[0020] 冷却装置外壁 113は、基盤 101に対して固定された支持部 102、 103により支持さ れている。また、この冷却装置外壁 113は、例えばステンレス力もなり、その内部に第 1液体窒素保存タンク 111及び第 2液体窒素保存タンク 112が設けられている。第 1 液体窒素保存タンク 111は、冷却装置外壁 113の上蓋に固定されており、この上蓋 を貫通する液体窒素注入口 114、 115が設けられている。これら液体窒素注入口 11 4、 115を介して液体窒素が内部に注入され、あるいは、気化した窒素が外部へ排出 される。
[0021] 第 2液体窒素保存タンク 112は、第 1液体窒素保存タンク 111の下方に配置され、 ニードル弁 116の先端が挿入される微小孔を介して第 1液体窒素保存タンク 111と 連絡している。なお、ニードル弁 116の先端が微小孔に挿入されて微小孔が塞がつ ている間、第 2液体窒素保存タンク 112は第 1液体窒素保存タンク 111と分離されて いる。一方、ニードル弁 116の先端が微小孔に挿入されていない間、第 2液体窒素 保存タンク 112は第 1液体窒素保存タンク 111と連絡し、第 1液体窒素保存タンク 11 1の内部にある液体窒素が第 2液体窒素保存タンク 112の内部に注入される。そのと きの注入量は、ニードル弁 116の位置により調整可能である。また、第 2液体窒素保 存タンク 112は、排気口 117が設けられており、この排気口 117を介して気化した窒 素が外部へ排出される。
[0022] 真空容器 121及びヒートシンク 130は、第 2液体窒素保存タンク 112の下方に設け られている。ヒートシンク 130を含む固体レーザモジュール 10の主要部は、真空容器 121の内部に配置されている。ヒートシンク 130には内部空間が設けられ、この内部 空間が第 2液体窒素保存タンク 112の内部空間と連絡して!/、る。このヒートシンク 130 の内部空間に液体窒素が流入することで、ヒートシンク 130が冷却される。ヒートシン ク 130にはヒータ 142及び熱電対が設けられており、これらヒータ 142及び熱電対は 温度コントローラ 141に接続されている。温度コントローラ 141は、熱電対により測定 されたヒートシンク 130の温度をモニタし、また、ヒータ 142に通電することでヒートシ ンク 130の温度を上昇させる。
[0023] 第 1液体窒素保存タンク 111及び第 2液体窒素保存タンク 112と冷却装置外壁 11 3との間の空間は、真空容器 121の内部空間と連絡しており、また、排気管 105を介 して真空ポンプ 104に連結されて!、る。これらの空間が真空ポンプ 104により真空( 所定の真空度)に保持されることにより、液体窒素による冷却時の結露が防止される 。また、第 1液体窒素保存タンク 111又は第 2液体窒素保存タンク 112は断熱される。
[0024] 図 2は、この発明に係る固体レーザモジュールの一実施例に含まれるヒートシンク の構成を示す図である。この図 2において、領域(a)はヒートシンク 130の正面図、領 域(b)はヒートシンク 130の側面図、領域(c)はヒートシンク 130の平面図をそれぞれ 示す。ヒートシンク 130は、ヒートシンク本体 131と押え板 132と力も構成されている。 ヒートシンク本体 131は、略矩形状の部分と円柱状の上部とを備え、円柱状の上部に は 8個のネジ穴 133が設けられている。この構成によりヒートシンク本体 131は第 2液 体窒素保存タンク 112の底面にネジ止めされる。なお、このとき、ヒートシンク本体 13 1の円柱状の上部と第 2液体窒素保存タンク 112の底面との間の密着度を高めるた め(熱伝導をよくするため)、両者間に例えば厚さ 100 mのインジウム箔が挟み込ま れるのが好ましい。この場合、このインジウム箔はヒートシンク 130の一構成要素であ る。
[0025] ヒートシンク本体 131の略矩形状の部分における下側には 4個のネジ穴 134及び 貫通孔 136が設けられている。一方、押え板 132にも 4個のネジ穴 135及び貫通孔 1 37が設けられている。これらヒートシンク本体 131及び押え板 132は、ネジ穴 134、 1 35により互いにネジ止めされる。このネジ止めは、貫通孔 136、 137力互いに同じ位 置に重なるよう行われ、このとき、固体レーザ媒質等がヒートシンク本体 131及び押え 板 132によって挟まれる。

[0028] 図 3は、この発明に係る固体レーザモジュールの主要部の構造を示す断面図であ り、この図 3には、図 2に示された貫通孔 136、 137の中心軸を含む断面が示されて いる。また、図 4は、この発明に係る固体レーザモジュールの主要部の構成を示す組 立工程図である。固体レーザモジュールの主要部は、ウィンドウ 122、 123を有する 真空容器 121の内部に、ヒートシンク 130、固体レーザ媒質 151、第 1部材 152、第 2 部材 153、インジウム箔 154、インジウム箔 155及び断熱部材 156を収納したもので ある。インジウム箔 154、第 1部材 152、固体レーザ媒質 151、第 2部材 153及びイン ジゥム箔 155は、それぞれディスク形状を有し、この順に積層されている。インジウム 箔 154、 155は、中央に開口が設けられている。
[0029] 固体レーザ媒質 151は、第 1主面と該第 1主面に対向する第 2主面を有し、所定は 長の励起光により励起される活性元素が添加されている。この固体レーザ媒質 151 は、励起光の照射により内部に誘導放出光を発生させる。固体レーザ媒質 151の第 1主面には直接接触した状態で第 1部材 152が設けられ、固体レーザ媒質 151の第 2主面には直接接した状態で第 2部材 153が設けられている。固体レーザ媒質 151、 第 1部材 152、第 2部材 153それぞれの主面のうち相互に接する主面は、互いの密 着度がよくなるように、光学研磨されているのが好ましい。第 1及び第 2部材 152、 15 3は、活性元素が添加されておらず、上記励起光及び上記誘導放出光の双方に対し て透明な材料力もなる。以下、これら第 1及び第 2部材 152、 153を透明部材という。 ウィンドウ 122、 123も、上記励起光及び上記誘導放出光の双方を透過させることが できる。透明部材 152、 153及びウィンドウ 122、 123それぞれの主面には、上記励 起光及び上記誘導放出光それぞれの波長における反射を低減するための誘電体多 層膜フィルタが形成されるのが好まし ヽ。
[0030] 固体レーザ媒質 151の 4つの側面には、これら側面とヒートシンク 130との間に設け られた断熱領域として、 4つの側面に直接接するよう断熱部材 156が設けられている 。ヒートシンク 130は、固体レーザ媒質 151に接することなぐ透明部材 152及び透明 部材 153それぞれの主面及び側面に接する形状を有している。なお、透明部材 152 、 153とヒートシンク 130との間の密着度を高めるため(熱伝導をよくするため)、透明 部材 152とヒートシンク 130との間に例えば厚さ 100 μ mのインジウム箔 154が設けら れる一方、透明部材 153とヒートシンク 130との間に例えば厚さ 100 mのインジウム 箔 155が設けられるのが好ましい。この場合、これらインジウム箔 152、 153はヒート シンク 130の一部を構成する。
[0031] 透明部材 152、 153それぞれの熱伝導率は、固体レーザ媒質 151の熱伝導率より 高い。また、固体レーザ媒質 151の側面とヒートシンク 130との間に設けられた断熱 部材 156の熱伝導率は、固体レーザ媒質 151の熱伝導率より低い。

[0063] し力しながら、この時点ではポッケルスセル 33に印加される電圧値が変更されてお り、電圧値が変更された時点以降、ポッケルスセル 33は 1Z2波長板として作用して いる。このとき、ポッケルスセル 33を通過する光の偏光方位は 90度だけ回転される。 したがって、レーザ種光 Lは、リアミラー 21とミラー 34との間を往復し、その間に、固

体レーザ媒質 151において増幅される。その後、一定時間経過すると、ポッケルスセ ル 33に印加される電圧値が再び変更され、この変更時点以降、ポッケルスセル 33は 1Z4波長板として作用する。このとき、ポッケルスセル 33を通過する光の偏光方位 は 45度だけ回転される。したがって、それまでに共振器において増幅された光は、 偏光板 32を透過して、レーザ出力光 Lとして出力される。 [0064] 例えば、固体レーザ媒質 151は 25at%の Yb元素が添カ卩された YAGであって、励 起光の波長は 940nmであり、励起光パワーは 140mWであり、固体レーザ媒質 151 への励起光照射のビーム径は 2mmであり、固体レーザ媒質 151への励起光照射の エネルギー密度は 2. 3kWZcm2である。外部から偏光板 32に入射される P偏光の パルスレーザ種光 Lは、波長が 1030nmであり、パルス幅が 6. 8ピコ秒であり、パル

ス周波数が 50Hzである。偏光板 32は、波長 1030nmにおいて、 P偏光の透過率が 98.7%であり、 S偏光の反射率が 99.7%である。ミラー 34は、波長 1030nmにおけ る反射率が 99.7%である。リアミラー 21とミラー 34との間の共振光路に沿った光路長 は 2100mmである。このとき、ポッケルスセル 33が 1/2波長板として作用する期間 を 140ナノ秒間とすると、この期間にレーザ種光 Lは共振器内を 10往復することで

増幅される。そして、ポッケルスセル 33が 1Z4波長板として作用するようになると、そ れまでに共振器において増幅された光は、偏光板 32を透過して、レーザ出力光 Lと して出力される。
[0065] 以上のように、第 2実施例に係るレーザ発振器 3でも、固体レーザモジュール 10に 含まれる固体レーザ媒質 151の双方の主面それぞれに励起光が垂直に入射され、 また、固体レーザ媒質 151の双方の主面それぞれが共振器の共振光路に垂直であ る。当該実施例では、固体レーザ媒質 151の主面に直接接した状態で熱伝導率が 高い透明部材 152、 153が設けられ、さらに、固体レーザ媒質 151の側面に直接接 した状態で熱伝導率が低い断熱部材 156が設けられている。これにより、図 5及び図 6で説明されたように、固体レーザ媒質 151への励起光照射に起因した熱レンズ効 果が低減される。その結果、固体レーザ媒質 151から出射された該誘導放出光の波 面乱れが抑制され、高品質のレーザ光出力が得られる。
[0066] この発明は、上述の実施例に限定されるものではなぐ種々の変形が可能である。
固体レーザ媒質 151は Yb :YAGに限られるものではない。例えば、固体レーザ媒質 151に添加される活性元素は Nd、 Tm、 Ho、 Cr等の希土類元素や遷移金属元素で あってもよい。また、固体レーザ媒質 151のホスト材料は、ルビー、 YLF、サファイア、 ガラス、 S- FAP、 YVO等であってもよい。透明部材 152、 153は、サファイアガラス

に限られるものではない。透明部材 152、 153は、固体レーザ媒質 151より熱伝導率 が高い他の材料であってもよぐ例えば、ダイアモンド、酸化イットリウム、無添加の Y AG等であってもよい。ダイアモンドは、室温で lOOOWZm'Kという高い熱伝導率を 有するので、冷却機構を小型化 ·簡易化することができ、或いは、液体窒素冷却を行 わなくても固体レーザ媒質を充分に冷却できる場合がある。断熱部材 156は、テフ口 ン等の樹脂に限られるものではない。断熱領域を構成する断熱部材 156は、固体レ 一ザ媒質 151より熱伝導率が低い他の材料であってもよぐ例えば、発泡ガラス、空 気その他の気体などであってもよいし、また、真空であってもよい。
[0067] 以上の本発明の説明から、本発明を様々に変形しうることは明らかである。そのよう な変形は、本発明の思想及び範囲力 逸脱するものとは認めることはできず、すべて の当業者にとって自明である改良は、以下の請求の範囲に含まれるものである。 産業上の利用可能性

Claims

請求の範囲
[1] 第 1波長の励起光により励起される活性元素が添加され、照射された該励起光に応 答して内部で第 2波長の放出光を発生させる固体レーザ媒質と、
前記固定レーザ媒質の第 1主面に直接接した状態で設けられた第 1部材であって 、前記励起光及び前記放出光の双方に対して透明な材料力 なるとともに前記固体 レーザ媒質よりも高い熱伝導率を有する第 1部材と、
前記固定レーザ媒質の第 1主面と対向する第 2主面に直接接した状態で設けられ た第 2部材であって、前記励起光及び前記放出光の双方に対して透明な材料からな るとともに前記固体レーザ媒質よりも高い熱伝導率を有する第 2部材と、
前記固体レーザ媒質を間に挟んだ前記第 1及び第 2部材それぞれの少なくとも一 部を、該固体レーザ媒質から所定距離離間した状態で把持するよう配置されたヒート シンクと、そして、
前記第 1主面と前記第 2主面とを連絡している前記固体レーザ媒質の側面と、前記 ヒートシンクとの間に設けられ、該固体レーザ媒質よりも低い熱伝導率を有する断熱 領域とを備えた固体レーザモジュール。
[2] 請求項 1記載の固体レーザモジュールにおいて、
前記固体レーザ媒質の第 1主面に少なくとも一部が接する前記第 1部材の面は、該 第 1主面よりも広い面積を有し、前記固体レーザ媒質の第 2主面に少なくとも一部が 接する前記第 2部材の面は、該第 2主面よりも広い面積を有する。
[3] 請求項 2記載の固体レーザモジュールにおいて、
前記第 1及び第 2部材は、前記固体レーザ媒質の側面と前記ヒートシンクとの間隔 を規定するためのスぺーサとして機能して 、る。
[4] 請求項 1〜3のいずれか一項記載の固体レーザモジュールは、さらに、
前記ヒートシンクを冷却するための冷却装置を備える。
[5] 請求項 4記載の固体レーザモジュールは、さらに、
前記ヒートシンクを加熱するための加熱装置を備える。
[6] 請求項 4記載の固体レーザモジュールは、さらに、
内部が所定の真空度まで減圧された密閉容器を備え、この密閉容器は、少なくとも 、前記固体レーザ媒質、前記第 1部材及び前記第 2部材を収納する空間を有すると ともに、前記励起光及び前記放出光を透過させるためのウィンドウを有する。
[7] 請求項 1〜6のいずれか一項記載の固体レーザモジュールと、そして、
前記固体レーザモジュールに含まれる前記固体レーザ媒質に励起光を照射する 励起光源とを備えた光増幅器。
[8] 請求項 1〜6のいずれか一項記載の固体レーザモジュールと、
前記固体レーザモジュールに含まれる前記固体レーザ媒質に励起光を照射する 励起光源と、そして、
前記固体レーザモジュールに含まれる前記固体レーザ媒質が共振光路上に配置 された共振器とを備えたレーザ発振器。
