Definitions
- the present invention relates to an image processing method and apparatus for compressing a dynamic range of an image and converting it into an image suitable for image recording and display.
- the image is read as digitized image data using a digital camera or a document reading device, stored in a storage device, and subjected to appropriate image processing. Recording on a film or photographic paper as a hard copy, and displaying on a display device for visualization has become widespread due to recent improvements in computer performance, storage capacity, and cost reduction.
- the recording medium is a reflective recording medium such as photographic paper or plain paper
- the reproducible dynamic range does not reach that of the transmissive recording medium as described above.
- the dynamic range that can be reproduced by display devices using CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) or liquid crystal is comparable to the dynamic range of transmissive recording media, although it depends on the lighting conditions of the environment in which they are placed. It's hard to get what you want.
- the detail component is obtained by subtracting the base component Sus from Sf which is a value before image processing of the pixel of interest.
- the base component Sus is a value for each pixel of the image data Sf before image processing.
- Each base component Sus is obtained by taking an average value of each pixel and a surrounding pixel in a predetermined range for each pixel.
- the method of setting the value Snus per pixel is well known. However, when the dynamic range of an image is compressed by this method, there are the following problems. This point will be explained with reference to Figs.
- the horizontal axis X in FIG. 2 indicates a position along a straight line passing through the portion T where the luminance change is sharp on the original image, and the vertical axis L indicates the value of image data indicating the luminance at that position.
- Such a portion with a sharp change in luminance is referred to as an edge portion in the following description.
- the image data has a bright part on the left and a dark part on the right, with T on the X axis as the boundary.
- brightness and density are used as the units that represent the light and darkness of images. For images recorded as hard copies on film, photographic paper, plain paper, etc., the density is generally used. When these images are read by an image reading device In addition, even in the case of visual observation, if the image is illuminated under a certain lighting condition, the density and luminance of each pixel of the image have a certain relationship. .
- Reference numeral 101 in FIG. 2 (a) denotes a value of image data indicating the luminance of the original image, which is divided into a bright part 101a and a dark part 101b with T on the X axis as a boundary. In the following description, when the bright and dark parts of image data are described separately, the bright part is indicated by a and the dark part is indicated by b.
- Reference numeral 102 in FIG. 2 (b) denotes a base component of the image data obtained by the smoothing process as described above. In the following description, the value of image data indicating luminance is also referred to as luminance value.
- reference numeral 103 denotes a detail component of the luminance value of the original image, and the original image data 101 is also obtained by subtracting the base component 102.
- FIG. 3 is a diagram for explaining the image compression method of the prior art.
- 105 in FIG. 3 (a) is an image obtained by multiplying the base component Sus in FIG. 2 (b) by a coefficient a smaller than 1. This is the base component after processing, and 103 in Fig. 3 (b) shows the same detail component (Sf – Sus) of the original image as in Fig. 2 (c).

Sproc = Sorg+fl, 2 (Sus)
関数 Gを、 G (So rg, Susノ =A' :5org + B' ;5Us + Cとして、;5proc = Sorg + G (;5org, ¾us)
= (A+ 1) - Sorg+B- Sus + C
