技術分野
[0001] 本発明は、例えば走查型プローブメモリー装置など、プローブを用いて記録媒体に 対し情報の記録または読み取りを行う情報記憶装置に関する。
背景技術
[0002] 小型で情報を高密度に記録することができる情報記憶装置として、走査型プローブ メモリー装置がある。
[0003] 走査型プローブメモリー装置の信号記録再生原理としては、トンネル効果を用いた もの、原子間力を用いたもの、磁気力を用いたもの、静電力を用いたもの、非線形誘 電率を用いたもの、および記録媒体の熱変形を用いたものなど、様々な種類がある。
[0004] 走査型プローブメモリー装置は、通常、数十ナノメートルないし数マイクロメートル程 度の先端径を有するプローブと、表面に記録面が形成された平板状の記録媒体とを 備えている。走査型プローブメモリー装置は、プローブの先端を記録媒体の記録面 に接近または接触させることにより、記録媒体に対し情報の記録または読み取りを行 う。
[0005] また、走查型プローブメモリー装置は、プローブまたは記録媒体を記録面に対し平 行な方向に移動させ、プローブと記録媒体との間の位置を変更する。これにより、プ ローブにより記録媒体の記録面を走查することが可能となり、多量の情報を記録面に 高密度に配列することが可能となり、あるいは記録面に配列された多量の情報を連 続的にまたはランダムに読み取ることが可能になる。このようなプローブまたは記録媒 体の移動には、例えば MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System)技術を用いた電 磁駆動式または静電駆動式のァクチユエータが用いられる。
[0006] また、走査型プローブメモリー装置の多くは、マルチプローブ方式を採用している。
すなわち、走査型プローブメモリー装置の多くは、数十個あるいは数百個、さらには 数千個以上のプローブを例えばマトリクス状に配置した 2次元プローブアレイを備え ている。このようなプローブアレイを用いることにより、多量の情報を記録媒体に迅速 に記録することが可能となり、あるいは多量の情報を記録媒体から迅速に読み取るこ とが可能となる。
発明の開示
発明が解決しょうとする課題
[0007] ところで、走査型プローブメモリー装置における 2次元プローブアレイは、一般に、 行方向の配列と列方向の配列とが等しいマトリックス状に配置されている。
[0008] すなわち、一般的な 2次元プローブアレイは、 k X k (kは 2以上の整数)個のプロ一 ブを有している。これらのプローブは、プローブ支持基板の平面上において、行方向 に等間隔に k個配列され、かつ列方向にも等間隔に k個配列されている。そして、行 方向において互いに隣接するプローブの先端の間隔と、列方向において互いに隣 接するプローブの先端の間隔とは互いに等しい。
[0009] つまり、各プローブの先端を通過するように行方向および列方向にそれぞれ線を引 くと、多数の正方形が配列された格子(grid)が描かれる。
[0010] ここで、本発明の課題を説明するために、一般的な走査型プローブメモリー装置の 一例を想定する。以下、この走查型プローブメモリー装置の一例を「プローブメモリー 装置の一般モデル」という。
[0011] プローブメモリー装置の一般モデルは、 2次元プローブアレイ、記録媒体、記録媒 体を行方向に移動させるための第 1ァクチユエータおよび記録媒体を列方向に移動 させるための第 2ァクチユエータを備えてレ、る。
[0012] 2次元プローブアレイは、プローブを取り付けるためのプローブ支持基板を有してい る。このプローブ支持基板の平面上には、 16 X 16個のプローブが行方向に等間隔に 16個配列され、かつ列方向にも等間隔に 16個配列されている。そして、行方向にお いて互いに隣接するプローブの先端の間隔と、列方向において互いに隣接するプロ ーブの先端の間隔とは相互に等しぐこれらはいずれも 300 μ πιである。

[0017] さて、プローブメモリー装置における情報の記録は、高速であることが望ましい。上 述したプローブメモリー装置の一般モデルにおいて情報記録の高速化を図るために は、記録媒体の移動を高速にすることが望ましい。
[0018] 記録媒体の移動を高速にするための 1つの方法として、ァクチユエータの最低共振 周波数を高く設定することが考えられる。
[0019] しかし、ァクチユエータの最低共振周波数の設定の仕方によっては、エネルギー損 失が増加し、消費電力が大きくなつてしまう。
[0020] 特に、記録媒体の行方向における移動は、連続的な往復動である。このため、記録 媒体を行方向に移動させるための第 1ァクチユエータにおけるエネルギー損失の増 加が著しくなり、消費電力が大幅に増加してしまう。
[0021] 記録媒体の移動を高速にするためのもう 1つの方法として、互いに隣接するプロ一 ブの間隔を接近させて、記録媒体の移動距離を短くすることが考えられる。例えば、 上述したプローブメモリー装置の一般モデルの 2次元プローブアレイにおいて、行方 向に互いに隣接するプローブの先端の間隔と、列方向に互いに隣接するプローブの 先端の間隔とをいずれも 60 z mにする。そして、記録媒体における記録単位領域の 各辺の長さを 60 μ πιにする。これにより、記録媒体の移動距離が 60 μ πιになる。
[0022] しかし、プローブメモリー装置の記憶容量を維持した状態で、このような設計変更を 行うとすれば、プローブの個数を大幅に増やす必要がある。プローブの個数が大幅 に増えると、プローブ支持基板上にプローブを取り付けるためのスペースを確保する ことが困難になる。
[0023] 例えば、ノイズの低減を図るためにプローブの初段増幅器をプローブときわめて近 い場所に配置する必要がある。このためには、プローブの初段増幅器はプローブァ レイのプローブ支持基板上にプローブと共に配置することが望ましレ、。プローブの個 数が大幅に増えると、プローブ支持基板上にプローブを取り付けるためのスペースを 確保することができなくなる。
[0024] 他方、上述したように、プローブメモリー装置の一般モデルにおいて、記録媒体は、 情報の連続記録時に、比較的長い距離を行方向に連続的にかつ定常的に往復動 する一方、列方向には比較的短い距離ごとに間欠的に移動する。
[0025] つまり、記録媒体の行方向における移動の性質と、記録媒体の列方向における移 動の性質とは互いに相違する。
[0026] とすれば、情報の記録または読み取りの高速化および消費電力の低減を図るため には、記録媒体の行方向における移動の性質と記録媒体の列方向における移動の 性質との相違に応じて、記録媒体を行方向に移動させるための第 1ァクチユエータの 機械的性質と、記録媒体を列方向に移動させるための第 2ァクチユエータの機械的 性質とを異ならせることが望ましい。
[0027] 本発明は上記に例示したような問題点に鑑みなされたものであり、本発明の第 1の 課題は、情報の記録または読み取りの高速化を図ることができ、かつ消費電力を小さ くすることができる情報記憶装置を提供することにある。
[0028] 本発明の第 2の課題は、情報の連続的記録または連続的読み取りを行うための記 録媒体またはプローブアレイの往復動の高速化を図ることができ、かつ、情報の連続 的記録または連続的読み取りを行うために記録媒体またはプローブアレイを往復動 させるためのァクチユエータにおける消費電力を小さくすることができる情報記憶装 置を提供することにある。 課題を解決するための手段

[1] 記録面を有する平板状の記録媒体と、
前記記録媒体に対レ»報の記録または読み取りを行うプローブアレイと、 前記記録面に対し平行な第 1方向に前記記録媒体を移動させる第 1ァクチユエ一 タと、
前記記録面に対し平行でありかつ前記第 1方向と交わる第 2方向に前記記録媒体 を移動させる第 2ァクチユエ一タとを備え、
前記プローブアレイは、プローブ支持部と、 m X n (mおよび nはそれぞれ 2以上の 整数)個のプローブとを備え、
前記プローブは、前記プローブ支持部上において、前記第 1方向に沿って等間隔 に m個配列され、かつ前記第 2方向に沿って等間隔に n個配列され、
