Abstract

 本発明は、明るい白表示、高コントラストの白黒表示及びフルカラー表示を、簡便な部材構成で実現することができる新規の電気化学的な表示素子とその駆動方法を提供する。 この表示素子は、対向電極間に、電解質、エレクトロクロミック化合物、金属塩化合物及び白色散乱物を含有し、該対向電極の駆動操作により、1)該エレクトロクロミック化合物の酸化及び還元反応による色変化、及び2)該対向電極の少なくとも1方への該金属塩化合物が含有する金属元素の還元析出及び酸化溶解による色変化を用いて、黒表示、白表示及び黒以外の着色表示により3色以上の多色表示を行うことを特徴とする。
