Abstract

　偏光分離面（２２３ａ）に直交する２つの端面と、それらの端面に垂直な４つの側面とを有する直方体形状の偏光ビームスプリッタブロック（２２３）と、偏光ビームスプリッタブロック（２２３）のいずれか一つの側面に対向配置された光源と、光源と偏光ビームスプリッタブロック（２２３）との間に配置され、光源から出射された照明光を略平行光に変換して偏光ビームスプリッタブロック（２２３）に入射する照明光学系と、偏光分離面（２２３ａ）で偏光分離された照明光が出射される偏光ビームスプリッタブロック（２２３）の照明光出射面に対向配置される反射型液晶表示素子（２２４）であって、偏光分離された照明光を変調光に変調して偏光ビームスプリッタブロック（２２３）へと出射する矩形表示領域（２４０）を有する反射型液晶表示素子（２２４）と、変調光を偏光分離面（２２３ａ）で偏光分離した光を結像して投影像を形成する投影光学系とを備え、矩形表示領域（２４０）の短辺（２４０ｂ）が端面と平行となるように反射型液晶表示素子（２２４）を配置した。
