Definitions
- Cartridge shell for hunting shotguns with monolithic structure made of plastic materials.
- the present patent application relates to a cartridge shell for hunting and trap shotguns, provided with monolithic structure moulded from plastic materials.
- the current models of cartridges are provided with a shell composed of a cylindrical tubular case made of plastic materials inserted in the back into a sort of metal cup that is surrounded at the base with a protruding perimeter flange designed to act as grip when the cartridge is extracted from the shotgun barrel with backward traction movement after shooting.
- the cylindrical case is designed to contain a layer of gunpowder in the back part, with lead pellets loaded in front of the said layer.
- the back wall of the cup is provided with a central hole in which the trigger necessary to generate the explosion of the gunpowder layer is inserted forcedly.
- the stable insertion of the said trigger in the hole is made with suitable loading devices after coupling the metal cup with the plastic shell.
- the need to prevent the trigger from being ejected forcedly on the back of the cartridge is crucial to protect the structural integrity of the shotgun and the compliance with the best extraction mode of the cartridge.
- the specific purpose of the present invention is to devise a completely recyclable shell, provided - for the first time - with a structure made of plastics materials only (preferably polyethylene) and therefore without the traditional metal cup.
- the shell can be easily recycled without particular difficulties or time losses.
- the polyethylene used to make the shell of the invention is not able to ensure that the lateral walls of the hole that houses the trigger are capable of tightening the trigger with sufficient energy to prevent traumatic ejection during the explosion of the gunpowder.
- the shell of the invention is provided with such a structure that allows to ensure the very stable tightening of the trigger, in spite of the above difficulties, to prevent the accidental undesired ejection of the shell.
- the inventive idea that has permitted to achieve the said result consists in using the pressure that is generated inside the shell during the explosion of the gunpowder in order to hold the trigger.
- the shell is provided, on the internal surface of the closing wall of the cup, with a structure designed in such a way to guarantee that the force produced by the explosion of the gunpowder tends to cause a sudden, energetic narrowing of the cross-section of the hole where the trigger is inserted.
- the trigger is instantaneously and energetically tightened by the walls of the corresponding insertion hole, with such a force to prevent ejection towards the back of the shell.
- FIG. 1 is an axonometric view of the shell of the invention
- - figure 2 is a top view of the same shell; - figure 3 is a cross-section of figure 2 with plane A-A.
- FIG. 4 is a three-quarter top axonometric view of the shell.
- the shell (1 ) has a monolithic structure obtained from moulding plastic materials, preferably polyethylene.
- the structure comprises a tubular cylindrical case (2) designed to contain the powder and the pellets, which is closed on the back by a special cup (3) that basically consists in a sort of base with considerable thickness.
- the cup (3) is externally provided with an ordinary perimeter flange (4), designed to favour the extraction of the shell (1 ) from the shotgun barrel.
- the external surface (3a) of the cup (3) is provided with a central circular hole that provides access to a conduit (5) - designed to insert the trigger (6) - that ends in a second hole obtained on the internal surface (3b) of the cup (3).
- the second hole is surrounded by an annular border (7) that reduces its cross-section.
- the latter end of the conduit (5) is the deeper point of the internal surface (3b) of the cup (3), which has a considerably concave profile all around the same conduit (5).
- the border (7) is a sort of barrier that protects, on the entire perimeter of the conduit (5), the contact point between the internal walls of the conduit (5) and the external walls of the trigger (6).
- the gases generated by the explosion would inevitably penetrate between the internal walls of the conduit (5) and the external walls of the trigger (6), thus reducing the tightening force exerted by the internal walls on the external walls, and favouring the undesired traumatic ejection of the trigger (6) from the cup (3).
- the trigger (6) is held in operational position by the small blind holes (8) obtained on the internal surface (3b) of the cup (3).
- each hole (8) is subjected to an energetic diverging force that tends to increase the cross-section.
