It is obvious that the interface stability with the electrode is excellent due to the anchoring effect of the groove. Therefore, the performance of the membrane electrode assembly and the fuel cell including the same can be greatly improved.

Abstract

본 발명은 연료전지용 고분자 전해질막의 제조방법, 막 전극 접합체 및 고분자 전해질형 연료전지에 관한 것이다. 본 발명의 고분자 전해질형 연료전지용 고분자 전해질막의 제조방법은, (S1) 기재 상에 다수의 홈부를 형성하는 단계; (S2) 상기 기재의 다수의 홈부가 형성된 면에 전해질막 형성용 이온교환수지 용액을 캐스팅하는 단계; (S3) 상기 이온교환수지 용액을 건조하여 고분자 전해질막을 형성하는 단계; 및 (S4) 상기 형성된 고분자 전해질막을 상기 기재로부터 박리하는 단계를 포함한다. 본 발명의 제조방법에 따라 제조된 이온전도성 전해질막은 표면에 홈부가 형성되어 촉매와의 접촉 면적이 극대화되므로 전지의 성능을 향상시킬 수 있으며, 전극과 전해질막과의 접착성을 향상시켜 전극과의 계면 안정성을 개선할 수 있다.

Description

연료전지용 고분자 전해질막의 제조방법, 막 전극 접합체 및 고분자 전해질형 연료전지
본 발명은 연료전지용 고분자 전해질막의 제조방법, 막 전극 접합체 및 고분자 전해질형 연료전지에 관한 것이다.
최근 석유나 석탄과 같은 기존 에너지 자원의 고갈이 예측되면서 이들을 대체할 수 있는 에너지에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 이러한 대체에너지의 하나로서 연료전지는 고효율이고, NOx 및 SOx 등의 공해 물질을 배출하지 않으며, 사용되는 연료가 풍부하다는 등의 장점으로 인해 특히 주목 받고 있다.
연료전지는 연료와 산화제의 화학 반응 에너지를 전기 에너지로 변환시키는 발전 시스템으로서, 연료로는 수소와 메탄올, 부탄 등과 같은 탄화수소가, 산화제로는 산소가 대표적으로 사용된다.
연료전지에는 고분자 전해질형 연료전지(PEMFC), 직접메탄올형 연료전지(DMFC), 인산형 연료전지(PAFC), 알칼리형 연료전지(AFC), 용융탄산염형 연료전지(MCFC), 고체산화물형 연료전지(SOFC) 등이 있다. 그 중에서 고분자전해질형 연료전지는 에너지 밀도가 크고 출력이 높아 가장 활발하게 연구되고 있다. 이러한 고분자전해질형 연료전지는 전해질로서 액체가 아닌 고체 고분자 전해질막을 사용한다는 점에서 다른 연료전지와 차이가 있다.
현재 고분자 전해질 연료전지의 본격적 상업화에 필수적인 개선 요인은 성능의 향상, 수명의 연장, 가격의 저가화이다. 이 세 가지의 개선 요인에 영향을 가장 많이 미치는 부품이 막 전극 접합체(membrane electrode assembly)이며 본 발명은 특히 막 전극 접합체의 이온 교환막의 제조에 대하여 다룬다.
고분자 전해질형 연료전지(PEMFC)의 핵심인 막 전극 접합체(membrane electrode assembly, MEA)는 수소 연료가 공급되는 애노드(anode), 공기가 공급되는 캐소드(cathode)를 포함하며, 여기에서 수소와 산소가 전지화학반응을 함으로써 전기가 발생한다.
그런데, 막 전극 접합체의 전극에서는 촉매로 귀금속 백금 촉매가 사용되므로, 고가의 제조 비용이 소요된다. 따라서, 막 전극 접합체의 성능을 우수하게 유지하면서도 그 제조에 사용되는 귀금속 백금 촉매의 사용량을 절대적으로 감소시킬 수 있어야만 연료전지의 본격적 상용화가 가능하다. 즉, 기체 연료가 공급되어 촉매와 반응하여 수소 이온으로 분해되는 반응이나, 막을 건너온 수소 이온이 공기 중의 산소와 반응하여 물을 발생시키는 산소 환원 반응을 극대화시킬 필요가 있다.
이를 위해 촉매를 막 전극 접합체에 도입하는 제조공정을 살펴보면, 종래에는 이온교환박막 표면에 전극 촉매를 직접 코팅하거나, 카본 종이 위에 촉매를 코팅한 후에 라미네이팅(laminating)하는 방법을 사용하고 있다.
그러나 종래의 방법은 상대적으로 평평한 막 표면 위에 촉매를 코팅하거나 라미네이팅함으로써 촉매와 막의 반응면적을 극대화하는 것에 한계가 있고, 결론적으로 막 전극 접합체의 수명에 악영향을 미치는 결과를 초래하였다.
즉, 종래에는 이온교환막을 제조함에 있어, 평평한 표면을 가지는 필름으로 제조하였기 때문에 막 전극 접합체 제조공정에서 반응면적을 극대화하는 전략이 순전히 촉매층의 코팅전략에 의해 좌우되었던 것이다.
이에 대해, 일본공개특허 제2000-251905호에는 이온교환막 표면의 프로톤(proton)을 중금속으로 치환환 후, 직접 방사선을 조사하여 패턴을 형성하고, 다시 중금속을 프로톤으로 치환하는 기술이 개시된 바가 있다.
본 발명이 이루고자 하는 기술적 과제는 전술한 종래기술의 문제를 해결하기 위한 것으로서, 본 발명의 목적은 나노 스케일의 미세 패턴을 이온전도성 고분자 전해질막의 표면에 형성하며, 미세 패턴의 형태 조절이 자유로운 이온전도성 고분자 전해질막의 제조방법을 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 또 다른 목적은 촉매의 사용량을 줄일 수 있으며, 막 전극 접합체에서의 삼상 반응 면적을 최대화하고, 전극과의 계면 안정성이 우수한 이온전도성 고분자 전해질막을 제공하는데 있다.
본 발명이 이루고자 하는 기술적 과제의 달성을 위해 본 발명의 고분자 전해질형 연료전지용 고분자 전해질막 제조방법은, (S1) 기재 상에 다수의 홈부를 형성하는 단계; (S2) 상기 기재의 다수의 홈부가 형성된 면에 전해질막 형성용 이온교환수지 용액을 캐스팅하는 단계; (S3) 상기 이온교환수지 용액을 건조하여 고분자 전해질막을 형성하는 단계; 및 (S4) 상기 형성된 고분자 전해질막을 상기 기재로부터 박리하는 단계를 포함한다. 본 발명의 고분자 전해질막 제조방법은 기재에 홈부를 형성하는 방법에 따라 미세한 홈부 형성이 가능하고 홈부의 형태도 다양하게 할 수 있으며, 전해질막에 직접 광을 조사하는 것이 아니라 홈부가 형성된 기재를 사용하여 전해질막을 제조하므로 전해질막의 표면 성질에 손상이 거의 생기지 않는다.
본 발명의 전해질막 제조방법에 있어서 홈부의 형상은 예를 들면, 삼각형, 사각형, 반원형 또는 톱니형을 가질 수 있고, 홈부의 깊이는 1nm~10㎛일 수 있으나 여기에 한정되지 않는다.
본 발명의 전해질막 제조방법에서 사용되는 전술한 기재로는 고분자 필름, 유리 기재, 스테인리스 스틸로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 것을 사용할 수 있으나, 여기에 한정되지 않는다.
본 발명의 전해질막 제조방법에 있어서 고분자 전해질막을 형성하게 되는 상기 이온교환수지 용액은 전해질막으로 사용될 수 있는 것이면 제한없이 사용할 수 있으며, 대표적으로 퍼플루오로술폰산, 탄화수소계 술폰산 및 탄화수소계 포스포릭산으로 이루어진 군에서 선택될 수 있으나 여기에 한정되지 않는다.
본 발명의 연료전지용 고분자 전해질막은 전술한 본 발명의 전해질막 제조방법에 따라 적어도 한 면에 홈부가 형성된다. 본 발명의 전해질막은 적어도 한 면의 표면에 형성된 미세한 홈부를 통해 막 전극 접합체에서의 삼상 반응 면적을 최대화하여 촉매의 사용량을 줄일 수 있으며, 홈부의 앵커링(anchoring)효과로 인해 전극과의 계면 안정성을 개선할 수 있다.
또한, 한 면의 홈부의 깊이 또는 형상이 다른 한 면의 홈부의 깊이 또는 형상과 상이할 수 있다.
전술한 본 발명의 고분자 전해질막은 막 전극 접합체 또는 고분자 전해질형 연료전지에 사용될 수 있다.
본 명세서에 첨부되는 다음의 도면들은 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 예시하는 것이며, 후술하는 발명의 상세한 설명과 함께 본 발명의 기술사상을 더욱 이해시키는 역할을 하는 것이므로, 본 발명은 그러한 도면에 기재된 사항에만 한정되어 해석되어서는 아니 된다.

이하, 본 발명에 대해 상세히 설명하기로 한다. 본 명세서 및 청구범위에 사용된 용어나 단어는 통상적이거나 사전적인 의미로 한정해서 해석되어서는 아니 되며, 발명자는 그 자신의 발명을 가장 최선의 방법으로 설명하기 위해 용어의 개념을 적절하게 정의할 수 있다는 원칙에 입각하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 부합하는 의미와 개념으로 해석되어야만 한다.
본 발명의 한 고분자 전해질막 제조방법에 있어서, 먼저 기재 상에 다수의 홈부를 형성한다(S1 단계).
본 발명에 있어서, 기재 상에 홈부를 형성하기 위한 방법으로는 수 나노 내지 수십 마이크로 수준의 홈부를 형성할 수 있는 방법이라면 제한 없이 사용될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 포토리소그래피, 나노임프린트, 전자빔리소그래피 등이 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
이러한 홈부 형성 방법을 통해 기재 상에 홈부의 깊이와 형상을 필요에 따라 자유롭게 조절할 수 있다.
본 발명에 있어서 홈부의 깊이는 당업자가 필요에 따라 조절할 수 있으며, 예를 들면, 1nm~10㎛의 깊이를 갖도록 조절이 가능하나, 여기에 한정되지 않는다.
또한, 구체적인 홈부 형성 방법에 따라 홈부의 형상도 조절이 가능하다. 따라서 본 발명에 있어서 홈부의 형상은 당업자가 필요에 따라 선택할 수 있으며, 예를 들면 삼각형, 사각형, 반원형 또는 톱니형일 수 있으나, 여기에 한정되지 않는다. 도 1에는 기재에 포토리소그래피 방식으로 형성된 다양한 홈부의 개략적인 형상이 예시되어 있다.
본 발명에 따라 다수의 홈부가 형성되는 기재는, 전술한 홈부 형성 방법을 통해 홈부가 형성될 수 있고 이 후 전해질막 형성용 이온교환수지 용액이 캐스팅될 수 있는 것이면 제한 없이 사용될 수 있다. 예를 들면 고분자 필름, 유리 기재, 스테인리스 스틸로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 기재를 사용할 수 있으며, 상기 고분자 필름에는 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(PET) 또는 폴리이미드 등을 사용할 수 있으나, 여기에 제한되지는 않는다.
본 발명의 한 고분자 전해질막 제조방법에 있어서, 기재 상에 다수의 홈부를 형성한 후에는, 상기 기재의 다수의 홈부가 형성된 면에 전해질막 형성용 이온교환수지 용액을 캐스팅한다(S2 단계).
전술한 이온교환수지 용액으로는 전해질막을 형성할 수 있는 이온교환수지이면 제한없이 사용될 수 있으며, 대표적으로는 퍼플루오로술폰산, 탄화수소계 술폰산 및 탄화수소계 포스포릭산으로 이루어진 군에서 선택하여 사용할 수 있으나, 여기에 제한되지는 않는다.
선택적으로, 상기 기재 상에 캐스팅된 이온교환수지 용액 상에 상기 (S1) 단계에 따라 다수의 홈부가 형성된 제2 기재를 홈부가 형성된 면이 상기 이온교환수지 용액에 접하도록 덮을 수 있다. 이러한 과정을 통해 양면에 홈부가 형성된 전해질막을 얻을 수 있다. 선택적으로, 제1 기재와 제2 기재에 형성된 홈부의 깊이 및/또는 형상은 서로 동일하거나 다를 수 있고, 그에 따라 제조되는 본 발명의 고분자 전해질막의 양면에 다수의 홈부를 형성하는 경우에는 양면의 홈부의 깊이 및/또는 형상이 동일할 수도 있고, 다를 수도 있다.
본 발명의 한 고분자 전해질막 제조방법에 있어서, 미세한 홈부가 다수 형성된 상기 기재에 이온교환수지 용액을 캐스팅 한 후에는, 건조단계를 거쳐 고분자 전해질막을 형성한다(S3 단계).
본 발명의 제조방법에 있어서, 건조 방식에는 당분야에서 사용되는 건조방식이 제한 없이 사용될 수 있으며, 대표적으로는 실온에서의 자연 건조 또는 열풍 건조 방식을 채택할 수 있다.
건조가 끝나면, 상기 형성된 고분자 전해질막을 상기 기재로부터 박리하여 고분자 전해질막으로 사용할 수 있다(S4 단계).
전술한 바와 같이, 본 발명의 고분자 전해질막 제조방법들에 따라 적어도 한 면에 다수의 홈부가 형성된 고분자 전해질형 연료전지용 고분자 전해질막을 제조할 수 있다. 본 발명의 고분자 전해질막은 캐스팅 공정을 통해 한 면 또는 양면에 다수의 홈부가 형성될 수 있는데, 한 면만 다수의 홈부가 형성되는 경우에는, 다소 반응속도가 느린 공기극(cathode)과 접촉하는 부분에 홈부를 형성하는 것이 바람직하다.
또한, 본 발명의 막 전극 접합체는 앞서 설명한 바와 같은 이온전도성 고분자 전해질막을 포함하여 이루어진다. 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 막 전극 접합체의 단면을 모식적으로 도시한 도 2를 참조하면, 본 발명의 막 전극 접합체는 상기 이온전도성 고분자 전해질막(201); 및 상기 이온전도성 고분자 전해질막(201)을 사이에 두고 서로 대향하여 위치하는 애노드 전극(203, 207a, 209a) 및 캐소드 전극(205, 207b, 209b);을 포함하여 이루어지며, 상기 애노드 전극(203, 207a, 209a) 및 캐소드 전극(205, 207b, 209b)은 기체확산층(207a, 207b, 209a, 209b) 및 촉매층(203, 205)을 포함하여 이루어진다.
상기 애노드 전극의 촉매층(203)은 연료의 산화 반응이 일어나는 곳으로, 백금, 루테늄, 오스뮴, 백금-루테늄 합금, 백금-오스뮴 합금, 백금-팔라듐 합금 및 백금-전이금속 합금으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 촉매가 바람직하게 사용될 수 있으며, 상기 캐소드 전극의 촉매층(205)은 산화제의 환원 반응이 일어나는 곳으로, 백금 또는 백금-전이금속 합금이 촉매로 바람직하게 사용될 수 있다. 상기 촉매들은 그 자체로 사용될 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 탄소계 담체에 담지되어 사용될 수 있다.
촉매층(203, 205)을 도입하는 과정은 당해 기술 분야에 알려져 있는 통상적인 방법으로 수행할 수 있는데, 예를 들면 촉매 잉크를 이온전도성 전해질막(201)에 직접적으로 코팅하거나 기체확산층(207a, 207b, 209a, 209b)에 코팅하여 촉매층을 형성할 수 있다. 이때 촉매 잉크의 코팅 방법은 특별하게 제한되는 것은 아니지만, 스프레이 코팅, 테이프 캐스팅, 스크린 프린팅, 블레이드 코팅, 다이 코팅 또는 스핀 코팅 방법 등을 사용할 수 있다. 촉매 잉크는 대표적으로 촉매, 폴리머 이오노머(polymer ionomer) 및 용매로 이루어질 수 있다.
상기 기체확산층(207a, 207b, 209a, 209b)은 전류전도체로서의 역할과 함께 반응 가스와 물의 이동 통로가 되는 것으로, 다공성의 구조를 가진다. 따라서, 상기 기체확산층(207a, 207b, 209a, 209b)은 도전성 기재(209a, 209b)를 포함하여 이루어지며, 도전성 기재(209a, 209b)로는 탄소 페이퍼(Carbon paper), 탄소 천(Carbon cloth) 또는 탄소 펠트(Carbon felt)가 바람직하게 사용될 수 있다. 상기 기체확산층(207a, 207b, 209a, 209b)은 촉매층(203, 205) 및 도전성 기재(209a, 209b) 사이에 미세기공층(207a, 207b)을 더 포함하여 이루어질 수 있는데, 상기 미세기공층(207a, 207b)은 저가습 조건에서의 연료전지의 성능을 향상시키기 위하여 사용되는 것으로 기체확산층 밖으로 빠져나가는 물의 양을 적게 하여 이온전도성 전해질막(201)이 충분한 습윤 상태에 있도록 하는 역할을 한다.
앞서 설명한 바와 같은 본 발명의 이온전도성 고분자 전해질막 및 막 전극 접합체는 고분자 전해질형 연료전지에 효과적으로 활용될 수 있다.
본 발명은 또한 상기 본 발명의 막 전극 접합체를 포함하는 연료전지를 제공한다. 도 3은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 연료전지를 개략적으로 나타낸 도면이다. 도 3을 참조하면, 본 발명의 연료전지는 스택(200), 연료공급부(400) 및 산화제공급부(300)를 포함하여 이루어진다.
상기 스택(200)은 본 발명의 막 전극 접합체를 하나 또는 둘 이상 포함하며, 막 전극 접합체가 둘 이상 포함되는 경우에는 이들 사이에 개재되는 세퍼레이터를 포함한다 상기 세퍼레이터는 막 전극 접합체들이 전기적으로 연결되는 것을 막고 외부에서 공급된 연료 및 산화제를 막 전극 접합체로 전달하는 역할과 애노드 전극과 캐소드 전극을 직렬로 연결시켜주는 전도체의 역할을 한다.
상기 연료 공급부(400)는 연료를 상기 스택으로 공급하는 역할을 하며, 연료를 저장하는 연료탱크(410) 및 연료탱크(410)에 저장된 연료를 스택(200)으로 공급하는 펌프(420)로 구성될 수 있다. 상기 연료로는 기체 또는 액체 상태의 수소 또는 탄화수소 연료가 사용될 수 있으며, 탄화수소 연료의 예로는 메탄올, 에탄올, 프로판올, 부탄올 또는 천연가스를 들 수 있다.
상기 산화제 공급부(300)는 산화제를 상기 스택으로 공급하는 역할을 한다.  상기 산화제로는 산소가 대표적으로 사용되며, 산소 또는 공기를 펌프(300)로 주입하여 사용할 수 있다
이하, 본 발명을 구체적으로 설명하기 위해 실시예를 들어 상세하게 설명하기로 한다. 그러나, 본 발명에 따른 실시예는 여러 가지 다른 형태로 변형될 수 있으며, 본 발명의 범위가 아래에서 상술하는 실시예에 한정되는 것으로 해석되어서는 안 된다. 본 발명의 실시예는 당업계에서 평균적인 지식을 가진 자에게 본 발명을 보다 완전하게 설명하기 위해서 제공되는 것이다.
실시예
폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(PET) 수지에 포토리소그래피를 통해 약 270 nm 스케일의 사각형 미세 패턴을 형성하였다.
상기 미세 패턴이 형성된 PET 수지에 이온전도성 수지 용액을 캐스팅 한 후, 30 ℃에서 열풍건조 한 후, 기재로부터 박리하여 한 면에 다수의 사각형 홈부가 형성된 고분자 전해질막을 제조하였다. 형성된 홈부의 단면 사진을 도 4에 나타내었다.
상기와 같이 본 발명의 이온전도성 고분자 전해질막의 제조방법은 다수의 홈부가 형성된 기재를 사용하기 때문에, 고분자 전해질막의 표면을 손상시키지 않으면서 자유롭게 미세 패턴의 형태를 조절할 수 있음이 자명하다. 또한, 본 발명의 이온전도성 고분자 전해질막은 표면에 미세한 다수의 홈부가 형성되어 있으므로 촉매와의 접촉 면적이 최대화 되어 촉매의 사용량을 줄일 수 있으며, 막 전극 접합체에서의 삼상 반응 면적을 최대화할 수 있고, 홈부의 앵커링(anchoring)효과로 인해 전극과의 계면 안정성이 우수한 것은 자명하다. 따라서, 이를 포함하는 막 전극 접합체 및 연료전지의 성능을 크게 향상시킬 수 있다.

  1. (S1) 기재 상에 다수의 홈부를 형성하는 단계;
    (S2) 상기 기재의 다수의 홈부가 형성된 면에 전해질막 형성용 이온교환수지 용액을 캐스팅하는 단계;
    (S3) 상기 이온교환수지 용액을 건조하여 고분자 전해질막을 형성하는 단계; 및
    (S4) 상기 형성된 고분자 전해질막을 상기 기재로부터 박리하는 단계
    를 포함하는 고분자 전해질형 연료전지용 고분자 전해질막 제조방법.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 기재는 고분자 필름, 유리 기재 및 스테인리스 스틸로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 것을 특징으로 하는 고분자 전해질형 연료전지용 고분자 전해질막 제조방법.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 홈부의 형상은 삼각형, 사각형, 반원형 또는 톱니형인 것을 특징으로 하는 고분자 전해질형 연료전지용 고분자 전해질막 제조방법.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,

    상기 (S2) 단계 후에 캐스팅된 전해질막 형성용 이온교환수지 용액 위에 다수의 홈부가 형성된 제2 기재를 홈부가 형성된 면이 상기 이온교환수지 용액에 접하도록 덮는 단계를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 고분자 전해질형 연료전지용 고분자 전해질막 제조방법.
  7. 제6항에 있어서,
    전해질막의 한 면의 홈부의 깊이 또는 형상이 다른 한 면의 홈부의 깊이 또는 형상과 상이한 것을 특징으로 하는 고분자 전해질형 연료전지용 고분자 전해질막 제조방법.
  8. 양극, 음극 및 전해질막을 포함하는 고분자 전해질형 연료전지용 막 전극 접합체에 있어서,
    상기 전해질막은 제1항 내지 제7항 중 어느 한 항의 제조방법에 따라 적어도 한 면에 다수의 홈부가 형성된 전해질막인 것을 특징으로 하는 막 전극 접합체.
