Definitions
- the invention relates to a termination for a tension member of an elevator system.
- the invention relates to a termination for a flat rope or belt that is part of a frame member in a machineroom-less elevator system.
- Elevator systems typically include an elevator car and a counterweight connected and/or driven by several tension members such as ropes or belts.
- a machine drives the tension members to move the counterweight and the car through the hoistway.
- Machine room-less elevator systems locate the machine within the hoistway, for example in the space between the car and a wall, such that a machine room is not required.
- the machine is mounted on a frame member, often a bedplate.
- the ends of the tension members, or the "dead end hitches,” are provided on the bedplate.
- the termination socket must should be easily accessible.
- a termination comprises a wedge and a socket for receiving the wedge and a tension member.
- the socket is part of a frame member of the elevator system.
- the socket will contain at least one friction surface that interacts with the tension member.
- the at least one friction surface is provided on an insert plate that is integrated with the frame member.
- a frame member for supporting a component of an elevator system having a tension member comprises a mounting portion for the supporting component and a termination portion that forms a socket to receive a wedge and a tension member.
- the frame member is supported by either a hoistway wall or a guide rail.
- the frame member is a bedplate.
- Fig. 1 is a schematic plan view of an exemplary elevator system.
- FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of one embodiment of bedplate-termination assembly of the present invention.
- Fig. 3 is an alternate embodiment of the bedplate -termination assembly.
- An exemplary elevator system 10 illustrated in Figure 1 includes an elevator car 12 and a counterweight 14. Components not relevant to the present invention (e.g. controller, safeties, idler sheaves etc.) are not discussed.
- At least one tension member 16 such as a rope or belt supports the weight of the elevator car 12 and the counterweight 14 in a known manner.
- the machine 18 is mounted on a frame member 24.
- the tension member 16 is supported on the machine sheave 20 which is coupled to the machine shaft. Frictional force between the tension member 16 and the machine sheave 20 causes the tension member to move during rotation of the machine shaft, which in turn moves the car 12 and the counterweight 14.
- Opposed ends of the tension member 16 are attached at dead end hitches 23 and 25 respectively.
- the dead end hitches 23 and 25 are located on the frame member 24.
- the opposed ends and dead end hitches 23 and 25 may be located on separate frame members, and may be located on any suitable surface of each frame member.
- Figure 1 portrays an elevator system with an overslung roping arrangement, but the present invention could be used with other arrangements, such as an underslung arrangement.
- Figure 1 portrays a 2: 1 roping arrangement, the present invention could be used in systems with other roping arrangements.
- the embodiment of the present invention as shown in Fig. 3 comprises a frame member 24 designed to incorporate the functionality of the termination socket 30 for a first end of at least one tension member 16.
- the frame member may be supported by guide rails, the hoistway wall 22, or a combination thereof.
- a reinforcement member or other structural features may be located above and/or below the frame member 24, however these are not required for the present invention.
- the frame member 24 may provide the functionality of the termination socket 30 for at least a first end (counterweight side) of all of the tension members 16 used in the system.
- the frame member 24 may be the bedplate that also supports the machine 18.
- the frame member may be a plate located on either the car or counterweight side of the system between the corresponding rails.
- the termination rod 26 and the corresponding dead end hitch 23 are no longer necessary for the termination of the first end of all of the tension members 16. Without a dead end hitch, vibration can easily transmit through a tension member 16.
- the second end of a tension member 16 for example the end closest to the car side, could include a dead end hitch or utilize the arrangement of the present invention.
- the frame member 24 is shaped such that it can receive and retain the end of a tension member 16 wrapped around the wedge 32.
- the frame member 24 may be made from a single piece of bent sheet metal.
- At least one of the surfaces of the frame member 24 that retain the wedge 32 and interface with the tension member 16 must have a high enough coefficient of friction to prevent slipping between the tension member 16 and the surface of the frame member 24.
- one way to achieve such a coefficient of friction is to create a friction surface by roughening the surface of the frame member 24 in those areas that interact with the tension member 16 using a manufacturing process such as machining, knurling, or sandblasting.
- insert plates 34 and 34' may be integrated or attached to the frame member 24 to provide the necessary contour to retain the wedge.
- the surface of at least one insert plate 34 or 34' that interacts with the tension member 16 will similarly have a roughened friction surface as required to achieve the necessary coefficient of friction to prevent the tension member 16 from slipping.
- the underside of the frame member 24 will be accessible by a mechanic for mounting additional elevator components 36 that may interface with the end of the tension member 16.
