Definitions
- This invention relates to the field of transformers and switchgear equipment. Particularly, this invention relates to housings for transformers and switchgear equipment. More particularly, this invention relates to modular substation housings and enclosures.
- a substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system.
- High Voltage electrical equipment, transformers and switchgear equipment form a part of substations.
- Substations transform voltage from high to low, or the reverse, or perform any of several other important functions. Electric power may flow through several substations between generating plant and consumer, and its voltage may change in several steps.
- the transformers may be oil-filled equipment.
- a modular substation assembly the entire integrated electrical equipment is manufactured off site at the manufacturer's facility. This integrated mechanism is dropped off at a customer's site where only mechanical and external electrical connections are done.
- Present day substations are modular substations within a housing or an enclosure and require no fencing around it for protection purposes. Modular substations technology and innovative module design make possible the realization of substation in the smallest space. The construction is compact and they can be fitted in relatively smaller spaces in urban areas. Housings for substations include outdoor enclosures for medium / low / high - voltage switchgear, distribution transformers, low-voltage switchboards, connections and ancillaries like battery banks.
- the modules are designed to allow easy transportation and quick installation times. These units are preassembled at the manufacturing facilities. Prior to leaving the factory, the entire substation is subjected to necessary routine tests. Pre-assembled control cables with multi-plug connectors are installed so that only the external electrical and mechanical installation connections are made on-site.
- the housing or enclosure of the existing prior art modular substations envelopes the components within the housing or enclosure with little or minimum room for a service personnel to access.
- connection compartments on the existing inventions are limited by equipment doors. There may be very large cable to be manipulated and connected.
- the prior art devices allow for a ready to install substation, but are utilitarian and distasteful in appearance.
- An object of the invention is to provide an aesthetically blending modular substation enclosure or housing.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a modular substation with a housing which allows service personnel to access the interior components of the housing in inclement weather.
- a modular substation housing for housing a transformer, switchgear equipment, and associated equipment, characterised in that, said housing being made of locally available building material, and said housing comprises:
- clam shell type opening mechanism for said housing, to provide access to interior of said housing, wherein said housing is a split type compartment with an operative front section seamed with an operative back section with a hinge adapted to hinge said operative front section to said operative back section at said seam at its operative top side such that said opening mechanism allows said operative front section to be angularly displaced in order to open up for providing access to said transformer, switchgear, and associated equipment within.
- said housing is characterised by a peaked roof to provide a peak roof shaped housing to allow it to aesthetically blend in with surrounding homes, buildings and other structures.
- said housing is characterised by a peaked roof to provide a peak rood shaped housing to allow it to aesthetically blend in with surrounding homes, buildings and other structures, said peaked roof being in confirmation with building material of surrounding roofs.
- said housing includes facility for mounting of locally available building materials including siding, shingles, brick and stone veneers.
- said housing may include faux windows.
- said housing may include faux doors.
- said building material is in synchronism with building material that is available locally and in blend with surrounding buildings, said building material including wood paneling, rock veneers, bricks, stone, cement, shingles and the like.

- a peak roof (12) shaped housing is enabled to contain a transformer (14) and associated switchgear equipment. Radiators (16) may be located exterior to the housing, mounted on to the housing, in order for it to be communicable with the atmosphere for heat exchanging functionalities. It may be noted that the transformer and associated switchgear equipment are gas filled or oil filled assemblies.
- the housing as such, is a safe housing and does not require fencing to cordon off the electrical substation equipment (i.e. the transformer and the associated switchgear equipment).
- the shape of a peaked roof is a suitable aesthetic enhancement of the substation to be used in countries where residential buildings and apartments have peaked roofs. Rather than a flat cover, this modular substation has a peaked roof to allow it to aesthetically blend in with surrounding homes, buildings and other structures.
- a housing made up of locally available building material (18).
- the building material needs to be in synchronism with the building material that is available locally and in blend with surrounding buildings. These may range from wood paneling, rock veneers, bricks, stone, cement, and the like.
- the peak roofed (12) may be a roof in line with the local or neighbouring roofs and roof materials.
- This housing construct and built allows the housing to not stand out with respect to its local surroundings or allows it to refrain from being tagged as a 'substation', unless someone ordinarily knows of its placement.
- the substation may thus, be disguised as a house in a residential area.
- This environmentally harmonised modular substation has a peaked roof and facility for the mounting of locally available building materials such as siding, brick and stone veneers. This permits the substation to harmonise with its surroundings and be less intrusive in its environment. It can be equipped to blend in with any surroundings and offer a pleasing appearance as compared to the prior art.
- modular substation to harmonize with the surroundings, provision is made for steel sides and cover of the modular substation to be covered with locally available building materials, (i.e. siding, shingles, brick or rock veneers). To still further enhance the ability to blend in with its surroundings faux windows (20) and doors may be available. This allows the modular substation to harmonize with its surroundings and look less like a utilitarian substation and more like a house, shed or locally recognizable building or structure.
- building materials i.e. siding, shingles, brick or rock veneers.
- a clam shell type opening (22) for the housing is a split type compartment with an operative front section (24a) seamed with an operative back section (24b).
- the transformer and its high voltage compartment along with its low voltage compartment occupy much of the space of the operative back section.
- the front section is hinged to the back section at the seam (24c) at its operative top side. The hinge is such that a clam-shell type opening is provisioned.
- This opening mechanism allows the front section to be angularly displaced in order to open up for providing access to the transformer, switchgear, and associated equipment within.
- the front section opens such that there is a roof provided for the service personnel for protection from inclement weather, whilst the service personnel is working.
- Reference numeral 26 refers to high voltage connections and low voltage connections of the transformer (14) placed within the housing.
- the clam-shell type opening mechanism permits unrestricted access for service personnel. It doubles up as a temporary weather covering (tent) which is available to protect service personnel during inclement weather. Rather than providing access to connection compartments limited by doors, this mechanism allows relatively greater, unrestricted access through a clam-shell covering of the connection compartment, since the entire section folds up.
- the environmentally harmonised modular substation in enclosed in a secure, tamper proof, dead front enclosure with a clam shell opening to prevent contact with the live parts in the interior of the housing.
- the "clam shell” opening provides an increased accessibility to the connection compartment and a higher level of security than conventional doors.
- An optional tent structure is available to protect workers from inclement weather conditions during servicing.
- Grounding designs are in accordance with IEEE requirements for safe step and touch potentials to ensure public safety when approaching the substation. This protection of the live parts eliminates the need for fencing around the substation and the extensive real estate needed for a conventional station yard. This results in significant cost savings to the utility.
- the environmentally harmonised modular substation can be thought of as a pad mount transformer taken to its extremes.
