Abstract
A refill unit for a foam dispenser (100) including a liquid container (106) and a diaphragm foam pump (108) connected to the liquid container (106) and diaphragm foam pumps (108). The diaphragm foam pump (108) includes an elastomeric diaphragm (240) having an air piston bore (242) and a bellows. The air piston bore (242) forms at least a portion of an air chamber. A reservoir is located at least partially within the bellows that includes a liquid inlet. The diaphragm foam pump (108) includes a piston that forms a portion of the air chamber wherein the piston bore may be moved relative to the piston. Movement in a first direction causes air in an air chamber to be compressed and draws liquid into the reservoir and further movement in the same direction causes compressed air to flow into the reservoir where it mixes with the liquid and is expelled as a foam.
Claims
1. A refill unit for a foam dispenser comprising:
a liquid container (106) and
a diaphragm foam pump (108) connected to the liquid container (106); the diaphragm foam pump (108) including;
an elastomeric diaphragm (240) having an air piston bore portion (242) and a compressible reservoir portion (404) formed as a unitary piece;
the air piston bore portion (242) forming at least a portion of an air chamber (410);
a liquid inlet (214) into the compressible reservoir (404);
a piston (266) forming at least a portion of the air chamber (410), wherein the piston bore (242) moves relative to the piston (266) to compress air; wherein movement of the air piston bore portion (242) relative to the piston (266) in a first direction causes air in the air chamber to be compressed and draws liquid into the reservoir and wherein further movement of the air piston bore (242) causes compressed air to be released from the air chamber (410) and to flow into the reservoir (404).
2. The refill unit of claim 1 wherein the piston is stationary and the compressible reservoir is a bellows.
3. The refill unit of claim 2 wherein the air piston bore (242) has a slit valve (344) located in a wall.
4. The refill unit of claim 2 wherein the air piston bore (242) is located at least partially within the reservoir (404).
5. The refill unit of claim 2 wherein the piston (266) is secured to a cap (360) which connects to the liquid container (106).
6. The refill unit of claim 2 further comprising an outlet passage from the reservoir that has a first cross-sectional area that is different than a second cross-sectional area.
7. The refill unit of claim 2 further comprising one or more recesses (348) in the piston bore (242) for allowing air to enter the air chamber 410).
8. A diaphragm foam pump comprising:
an elastomeric diaphragm (240) having an air piston bore portion (242) and a bellows portion (244),
wherein the air piston bore portion (242) is located at least partially within the bellows portion (244);
a reservoir (404) at least partially formed by the bellows (244) and the outside of the piston bore portion (242);
a liquid inlet (214) into the reservoir (404);
a piston post (266), wherein the piston bore (242) moves relative to the piston post (266) to compress air;
an air inlet (344) into the reservoir (404);
wherein movement of a portion bore (242) of the elastomeric diaphragm (240) causes liquid to be drawn into the reservoir (404) and causes air to be forced into the reservoir (404) to mix with the liquid.
9. The diaphragm foam pump of claim 8 comprising an air outlet (344) in a wall of the air piston bore wherein the air outlet (344) is sized to restrict air flow therethrough.
10. The diaphragm foam pump of claim 9 wherein the air outlet (344) is a slit valve.
11. The diaphragm foam pump of claim 8 further comprising an outlet passage that has a first portion with a first cross-sectional area and a second portion with a second cross- sectional area that is greater than the first.
12. The diaphragm foam pump of claim 8 wherein the piston post (266) is secured to a cap (360) that is securable to a liquid container (106).
13. The diaphragm foam pump of claim 8 further comprising a container (106) filled with a foamable liquid.
14. The diaphragm foam pump of claim 8 wherein the liquid inlet passage (401 ) is formed between a portion of a shell (210) and the diaphragm (240).
15. A diaphragm foam pump comprising:
a housing (260) for connecting the diaphragm foam pump (108) to a liquid container (106);
a piston post (266) secured to the housing (108); a shell (210) configured to at least partially fit within a neck of the liquid container (106) and held in place by the housing (260);
the shell (210) having a cylinder (212) and a liquid inlet (214) located therein; an elastomeric diaphragm (240) located at least partially between the shell (210) and the housing (260);
the elastomeric diaphragm (240) having a bellows (244) and a piston bore (242); the piston bore (242) having an opening in one end sized to fit over the piston post (266) to form an air chamber (410);
the piston bore (242) configured to fit at least partially within the cylinder (212) of the shell (210);
wherein movement of the piston bore (242) over the piston post (266) compresses the air chamber (410) and compresses air located therein; and compressed air travels between the outside of the piston bore (242) and the cylinder (212) into the bellows (244).
16. The diaphragm foam pump of claim 15 further comprising an outlet duck-bill valve (246).
17. The diaphragm foam pump of claim 15 wherein the piston bore (242) has a slit valve through one of its walls for the compressed air to pass therethrough.
18. The diaphragm foam pump of claim 15 wherein an outlet valve (246) is integrally formed with the elastomeric diaphragm (260).
19. The diaphragm foam pump of claim 15 wherein the piston bore (242) comprises one or more elongated recesses (348) for allowing air to enter the air chamber (410).
20. The diaphragm foam pump of claim 15 wherein the elastomeric diaphragm (240) further comprises an actuator member (250) for engaging with a dispenser actuator.
