Definitions
- This invention relates to an apparatus for printing and applying a label to a product. More specifically the apparatus folds the label around the product to form a label sleeve.
- the apparatus has a preferred application in relation to use with a product having an upper surface, sides and a lower surface parallel to the upper surface whereby consumers at least initially review the upper surface for information on the product. It will be convenient to hereinafter describe the invention with reference to this preferred application, however it should be appreciated that the invention is not limited to products of this nature and may be suitable for use with other products.
- a supermarket delicatessen will often have a weighing station that allows the deli attendant to weigh the product, such as sma!lgoods or cheese, being purchased by the consumer. Where the product is to be paid for at a location remote from the delicatessen, such as a checkout, the deli attendant will normally label the product to indicate the cost.
- the weighing station will often also have a labelling capability for producing a label based on the weight of the product and the price per kilogram as input by the deli attendant.
- the label often selectively produced at the weighing station also often includes a bar code for scanning at the checkout.
- a weighing station with labelling capability of the foregoing kind is suitable for this environment where unique individual products need to be processed. This kind of weighing station also relies heavily on the assistant manually holding and moving the individual goods before applying the label manually. It does not lend itself to automation where multiple products need to be processed in a more timely fashion.
- Figure 1 is an isometric view of the apparatus according to the invention.
- Figure 2 is a front elevation view of the apparatus from Figure 1 in conjunction with a weighing station.
- Figure 3 is a detailed view of the labelling head and printing station from Figure 2.
- Figures 4a to 4d are a partial end elevation view of the folding station from Figure 2.
- Figures 5a and 5b are a partial end elevation view of the folding station from Figure 2.
- FIG 1 illustrates a preferred embodiment of the apparatus 1 according to the invention for printing and applying a label to a product.
- the apparatus 1 includes a label head assembly 2, a printing station 3, folding station 4, a conveyor system 5 and a stand 6.
- a preferred application for the apparatus 1 is for printing and applying a label to a product 2 (see Figure 3) which may take the form of a plastic wrapped tray.
- the plastic wrapping may take the form of either a ding- wrap style or heat-sealed plastic wrapping attached to the tray itself.
- the preferred product 7 includes an upper surface 8 formed at Ieast in part by the plastic film, a lower surface formed by the base of a tray and opposed sides formed by the opposed sides of the tray.
- Figure 3 illustrates a preferred form of conveyor system including a conveyor belt 10 which moves the product 7 towards the dispensing station 11.
- the conveyor system aiso includes a pair of opposed guide plates 12 (see Figure 1 ) for guiding the position of the product 7 in a transverse direction relative to the direction of movement of the conveyor belt 10.
- Figure 1 also illustrates adjustment means 13 for adjusting the guide plates 12 to allow for products of various widths to be accommodated on the conveyor belt 10. This accurately aligns the product 7 relative to the dispensing station 11 to ensure that the label dispensed from the dispensing station is accurately aligned relative to the product 7.
- FIG. 1 illustrates the label head assembly 2 including an unwind spool 14 and a rewind spool 15.
- Figure 3 which illustrates the unwind spool 14 accommodating a substrate roll 16 which has a plurality of label (not visible) attached to a release web 17.
- the release web 17 passes around a series of rollers 18 to maintain the tension on the release web spooling off the unwind spool 14.
- the labels and release web pass beneath the printing station 3 which prints onto the label substrate information relating to the product 7 being labelled.
- This information may take any form, however in the preferred application it includes information such as price, weight, use by date and a checkout barcode.
- the label substrate and release web then passes over a peel plate 19 which separates the label substrate from the release web.
- the peel plate 19 forms part of a dispensing station at which point the printed label is detached from the release web and positioned adjacent an upper surface of the product 7.
- the release web 17 is drawn past a further roller in between two driven pinch rollers which form the primary drive means for driving the release web through the label assembly head 2. Thereafter the release web 17 is wound up on a rewind spool 15 for disposal at an appropriate time.
- the conveyor belt 10 illustrated in Figure 2 transfers the product past the dispensing station 19 until such time as the product engages the folding station 4.
- the folding station may take any form however it preferably includes a guide means 21 for engaging the first flag portion 22 and the second flag portion 23 (see Figure 4a).
- the guide means 21 may take any form and in the embodiment illustrated it includes a first 24, second 25 and third 26 set of guide members which are collectively designed to engage and fold the first flag portion 22 and second flag portion 23 of the label .
- Figures 4a and 4b illustrates schematically part of the first set of guide members 24.
- These preferably include includes a first pair of rotating discs 27 having a substantially frustoconical shape. These discs 27 make initial contact with the first flag portion 22 and the second flag portion 23 so as to fold the first flag portion 22 and second flag portion 23 of the label 28 at an angle which is substantially 45°to the face portion 29 of the label 28.
- Figure 4b illustrates schematically a second pair of substantially right angled discs 30 which further fold first flag portion 22 and second flag portion 23 so that they extend substantially 90° to the face portion 29.
- the first set of guide members 21 may include additional pairs of rotating discs, and at least figure 1 indicates that three pairs of rotating discs are preferred. Where a third pair of rotating discs is included it is preferred that they fold the first flag portion 22 and second flag portion 23 to an angle of about 60°.
- Figures 4c and 4d illustrates a preferred embodiment of the second set of guide members 25 having pairs of discs 31 , 32 which are rotatable about axis perpendicular to the pair of discs 27, 30 illustrated in figures 4a and 4b.
- This first pair of discs 31 illustrated in Figure 4c also have a frustoconical surface for engaging first flag portion 22 and second flag portion 23 so as to fold the first flag portion 22 and second flag portion 23 under a lip of the product 7.
- Figure 4d illustrates a fourth pair of discs 32 which have a rounded edge for engaging and folding the first flag portion 22 and second flag portion 23 so as to be substantially aligned with the sides of the product 7.
- the transfer of the product through the folding station is preferably by way of a belt drive operating with the first and second discs (see Figure 2), and a direct drive on the third and fourth discs (see Figure 2) acting on the sides of the product.
- Figures 5a and 5b illustrate schematically the third set of guide members 26 for folding the first flag portion 22 and the second flag portion 23 into an overlapping configuration.
- Figure 5a illustrates a preferred embodiment of an initial guide member having a roller 32 with a frustoconical head 33 and a series of three rubber rings 34.
- a piston 35 forming the preferred transition means move the roller 32 in a direction transverse to the travel of the product 7 of the frustoconical head 33 which engages and folds the first flag portion 22 to extend substantially parallel with the lower surface of the product 7.
- secondary guide members 26 in the form of a second roller 32 again having a frustoconical head 33 for folding the second flag portion 23 to extend substantially parallel with the lower surface of the product 7.
- the thrust of the second piston 35 is sufficient to extend past the overlap between the first flag portion 22 and the second flag portion 23 so as to facilitate relative adhesion between the first flag portion 22 and the second flag portion 23.
- the folding station preferably includes optical sensors (not shown) to sense the position of the product relative to at least the third set of guide members 26. These optica! sensors trigger activation of the initial guide members and then subsequently the secondary guide members so as to allow for the first flag 22 to overlap with the second flag 23.
- the folding station 4 includes a pair of opposed arms 36 for supporting the first and second guide members. Furthermore, adjustment means 37 are provided for adjusting the position of the arms 36 relative to each other to accommodate products 7 of various widths. Further adjustment means is provided for adjusting the position of the first and second piston 35, to allow for adjustments made to the pair of arms.
- Figure 1 also illustrates an electronic user interface 38 for enabling the operator to adjust parameters of the apparatus such as the printing and/or speed of the conveyor system.
- the adhesive attaching each label substrate to the backing web is not continuous along the entire length of the label. More specifically, it is preferred that there be no adhesive on that section of the label which engages the upper surface of the product 7. Furthermore it is preferred that the adhesive allow for relative adhesion between the overlap first flag portion 22 with the second flag portion 23, and also with the first flag portion 22 or second flag portion 23 with the lower surface 9 of the product. The adhesive may also attach to the first flag portion 22 and/or second flag portion 23 to the sides of the product 7.
