Definitions
- Trim element comprising a body and an insert, the body being formed through said insert
- the present invention relates to a trim element of the type comprising a body made of injected material, said body comprising a first area having a first thickness and a second area having second thickness, which is inferior to the first thickness, the trim element further comprising an insert overmoulded by the body, said insert comprising a base extending opposite the second area of the body.
- the invention also relates to a method for producing such a trim element.
- trim elements by injecting a molding material, such as a plastic material, in a molding cavity, the body of the trim element having an area of reduced thickness, for example to produce a translucent area in the trim element in order to backlight said area.
- the molding cavity is shaped to form a space having the regular thickness of the body and a space having the reduced thickness of the bdcjy.
- the molding material is injected in the cavity in the space of regular thickness and ' the injected material flows in the molding cavity to reach the space of reduced thickness and forms both the area of regular thickness and the area of reduced thickness.
- one or more injection nozzles open in the cavity and the filling of the cavity occurs thanks to the injection pressure applied on the molding material and to the fluidity of the molding' material.
- the injection nozzles could be installed to open in the area of the cavity intended to form the area of reduced thickness in order to make sure that this area is properly filled with the injection material. But, this would also require a modification of the molding tool and would have a negative impact on the aspect of the trim element, because the very high rate of the flow of material coming from the each nozzle leads to the presence of sink marks on the visible side of the trim element opposite the injection points due to the reduced thickness of the area. Therefore, transparency of the area of reduced thickness can not be achieved with such an arrangement.
- the invention relates to a trim element of the afore-mentioned type, wherein the base of the insert comprises at least one opening extending through said base, the injected material of the second area being overmoulded on said base through said opening.
- the area of reduced thickness i.e. the second area
- the area of reduced thickness is formed from a material which is injected through the opening of the insert, located directly opposite the area of reduced thickness, there is no difficulty to properly form the area of reduced thickness, and there is no need to modify the injection tool or to use a particular and expensive injection material. Furthermore, the aspect of the area of reduced thickness is preserved and transparency of this area can be easily achieved; since there is no need to provide an injection nozzle opening directly in the area of reduced thickness.
- the base comprises a plurality of openings, the injected material of the second area being overmoulded on said base through each of said openings ;
- the base comprises an outer face and an inner face, the second area of the body extending against the outer face, at least one duct extending on the inner face, the opening of the base opening in said duct, such that the injected material of the second area is overmoulded on the base through said duct ;
- the insert comprises at least two ducts extending on the inner face of the base, each duct extending on a side of the base, the base comprising at least one opening extending through said base and opening in each duct ;
- the insert comprises a housing extending between the two ducts of the insert, a functional element being arranged in said housing ;
- the base of the insert is translucent, the second thickness of the second area being arranged such that the second area of the body is translucent;
- the insert is made of a material having a higher melting point than the material forming the body of the trim element.
- the invention also relates to a method for producing a trim element as described above, comprising the following steps:
- said insert comprising a base and defining with the walls of the molding cavity, around the base, a space having the shape of the first area of the body of the trim element to be produced, and, opposite the base, a space having the shape of the second area of the body of the trim element to be produced,
- the base comprises at least one opening extending through said base, the material being injected through said opening in the molding cavity to form the second area of the body.
- the insert comprises a duct extending on the inner face of the base, the opening of the base opening in said duct, the material being injected in said duct such that the injected material reaches the opening by circulating in said duct and the space having the shape of the second area through said opening ;
- the insert comprises at least two ducts extending on each side of the base, the base comprising at least one opening extending through said base and opening in each duct, the material being injected in both duct, such that the second area is formed by injected material coming from both openings via each duct;
- the method comprises a step of removing the trim element from the molding cavity and attaching a functional element on the base between the two ducts of the insert.
- Fig. 1 is a diagrammatical perspective view of a trim element according to the invention
- Fig. 2 is a enhanced view of part of the insert of the trim element of Fig. 1 .
- Fig. 3 is diagrammatical cross-section view of the trim element of Fig 1.
- a trim element 1 comprising a body 2 and at least one insert 4, the trim element 1 forming for example a trim of a dashboard or of a door panel or of another part of the compartment of a vehicle.
- the body 2 is overmoulded on the insert 4, meaning that the body 2 surrounds at least a part of the insert 4 and is attached thereto by overmoulding, i.e. by moulding the body 2 around the insert 4 in a moulding cavity, as will be described later.
- the body 2 is made of an injection or moulding material, such as a plastic material.
- the body 2 is made of polypropylene (PP).
- the body 2 comprises an outer face 6, forming the visible side of the trim element 1 , and an inner face 8, on which the insert 4 is arranged, meaning that the insert 4 is not visible from outside the trim element 1.
- the distance between the outer face 6 and the inner face 4 defines the thickness of the body 2.
- the body 2 comprises at least one first area 10, extending around the insert 4 and having a first thickness and at least one second area 12, extending opposite the insert 4 and having a second thickness e 2 .
- the second thickness e 2 is inferior the first thickness ei , meaning that the body has a reduced thickness opposite the insert 4 as can be seen in the figures.
- the first thickness is for example comprised between 2 mm and 3 mm while the second thickness e 2 is for example comprised between 0,5 mm and 0,8 mm.
- Such a thickness in the second area 12 allows the second area 12 to be at least translucent, and if needed transparent.
- the light can therefore travel through the body in the second area 12 from the inner face 8 to the outer face 6, thereby allowing the backlighting of the trim element 1 by placing a light source on the inner side of the body 2, as will be described later.
- the outer face 6 of the trim element 1 is represented as being plane. However, it is to be understood that said outer face 6 can have a three-dimensional shape, depending on the shape of the part of the vehicle to be trimmed.
- the insert 4 extends opposite the second area 12 and is surrounded by the first area 10, meaning that the insert 4 extends on the inner face 8 of the body 2, opposite the second area 12 and does not extend on the inner face 8 opposite the first area 10.
- the insert 4 is made of a material having a melting point higher than the melting point of the material of the body 2, meaning that the inserts melts at a higher temperature than the body 2. Consequently, the insert 4 remains solid while the molding material is liquid or viscous at a temperature comprised between the melting point of the moulding material and the melting point of the insert 4. Furthermore, the material of the insert 4 has a higher strength than the moulding material of the body 2, the insert 4 therefore strengthening the trim element 1 and forming a reinforcement element of the trim element 1.
- the insert 4, or at least its base 14, can also be made at least in part of a translucent material.
- the insert 4 is for example made of polycarbonate or polyamide.
- the insert 4 comprises a base 14 having an outer face 16 and an inner face 18.
- the outer face 16 faces the inner face 8 of the body 2 opposite the second area 12 and the inner face 18 extends on the inner side of the trim element 1.
- the shape of the outer face 6 of the base 14 defines the shape of the second area 12 of the body 2.
- the base 14 has a sinuous shape in a plane parallel to the outer face 6 of the body 2
- the second area 12 will also have a sinuous shape in a plane parallel to the outer face 6 of the body, as shown in Fig. 1.
- the shape of the base 14 can be of any kind and can form a pattern for forming a particular illuminated pattern on the outer face 6 of the body 2 or have a shape for defining a particular cable path in the trim element, as will be described later.
- the insert 4 comprises at least one opening 20 extending through the base 14, from the inner face ' 18 ' to the outer face 16 opposite the inner face 8 of the body 2 in the second area 12, as can be seen in Fig. 3.
- the opening 20 opens in a duct 22, extending on the inner face 18 of the base 14 along the length of the insert 4 in a plane parallel to the outer face 6 of the body 2 and protruding from the inner face 18 of the base 14, as shown in Fig.
- the shape of the duct 22 follows the shape of the base 14 in the plane parallel to the outer face 6 of the body 2. Said duct is therefore also of sinuous shape when the base 14 is of sinuous shape, as shown in Fig. 1.
- the insert 4 comprises a plurality of openings 20 regularly distributed along the length of two ducts 22, each extending on a side of the base 14 and separated by a central area 24 extending between the two ducts 22. Since, the central area 24 extends between two ducts 22 having the same shape as the base 14, the- central area 24 defines a path having the shape of the base 14, i.e. a sinuous shape according to the embodiment of Fig. 1.
- the central area 24 is delimited on each side by a wall 26 of a respective duct 22 and thereby forms a housing extending on the inner face 18 of the base 14 and protruding from the inner face 18.
- the housing is adapted to receive an element of the automotive vehicle, such as a light source, for example an optical fibre 28 connected to a light-emitting diode (not shown), or an electric cable or a bundle of electric cables.
- the housing When the housing receives a light source and is made of a translucent material, the light emitted by the light source can travel through the base 14 of the insert 4 and through the second area 12 of the body 2, made translucent by its reduced thickness, and reach the outer face 6 of the body 2, thereby illuminating the outer face 6 along the path of the central area 24 defined by the shape of the base 14 and of the ducts 22.
- a backlighted trim element is obtained, wherein the shape of the backlighted area is defined by the shape of the housing of the insert 4 and of the second area 12 of the body 2.
- the insert 4 also acts as a reinforcing element of the trim element 1 , in particular of the second area 12 of reduced thickness. Consequently, there is no need of forming reinforcing ribs on the inner side of the trim element 1 by injecting said ribs with the body
- Such ribs are usually needed when forming a trim element having a reduced thickness area since the trim element would otherwise not have a sufficient strength in the area of reduced thickness.
- Such ribs in particular the ones extending opposite the area of reduced thickness, make it difficult to place a light source or another element on the inner side of the trim element 1 and increase the space requirement for installing the trim element 1 , which is more bulky.
- the insert 4 reduces the space requirement and serves both as reinforcement and as a support for the light source.
- the openings 20 in the base 14 of the insert 4 are arranged such that the injection material of the body 2 can be injected through the openings 20 in order to form the second area 12 of the body 2 as will now be explained in relation with the method for producing a trim element as described above.
- An insert 4 as described above is provided and placed in an injection cavity, or molding cavity, formed by the walls of a mold.
- the injection cavity is shaped such that when the insert 4 is placed in the cavity, the walls of the cavity and the base 14 of the insert define a space having the shape of the body 2 of the trim element.
- the outer face 6 of the base 14 defines with the opposite wall of the cavity a space having a thickness equal to the second thickness e 2 of the second area 12 of the body, while, around the base 14, the walls of the cavity define a space having a thickness equal to the first thickness e of the first area 10 of the body 2.
- the insert 4 is arranged in the cavity such that each inlet (not represented) of the ducts 22 is placed opposite an injection nozzle arranged to inject the injection material in the molding cavity. Consequently, when the injection material is injected via the injection nozzles, the material flows in the ducts 22 and reaches the space defined by the insert 4 and by the walls of the cavity by passing through the openings 20 arranged in the base 14 of the insert 4. The injection material then fills this space and forms the body 2 of the trim element 1 around and opposite the insert 4.
- Other injection nozzles can be arranged in order to open in the space intended to form the first area 10 of the body 2, in particular if the first area 10 has large dimensions relative to the second area 12. The material coming from the openings 20 and the material coming from the injection nozzles formed in the space intended to form the first area 10 then merge together to form the body 2.
- the insert 4 is made of a material having a higher melting point than the injection material, the insert 4 is able to receive the injection material in liquid form and is able to resist to the temperature of injection material without being damaged or deformed.
- the openings 20 in the base 14 of the insert 4 are arranged such that the injection material passing through them completely fills the space intended to form the second area 12 of the body 2.
- the diameter of each opening lies in the vicinity of 1 mm.
- the injection material surrounds the insert 4 and fills the duct 22 as shown in Fig. 1 and 3, thereby insuring a solid attachment between the insert 4 and the body 2.
- this assembly can be removed from the molding cavity and the functional element, such as an optical fibre 28, can be placed in the housing defined by the central area 24 of the base 14.
- the insert described above and shown in the figures is given by way of example.
- Other shapes of the insert can be used.
- the insert could be form by a simple plate having openings formed through the plate.
- the walls of the ducts can then be formed by protrusions on a wall of the molding cavity and by applying the plate against said protrusions with the openings extending between said protrusions.
- the number of ducts and of openings can also vary depending on the shape and dimensions of the insert 4 and of the second area 12 to be formed.
