Abstract

본 발명은 층상의 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질을 불소로 표면 코팅함으로써 표면에 스피넬 구조를 형성하여 리튬이차전지의 레이트(rate) 특성이 향상되도록 한 리튬이차전지용 양극 활물질 및 그의 제조방법에 관한 것으로, 본 발명에 의하면 종래에 비해 짧은 시간에 만충전에 가까운 용량을 충전할 수 있어 이차전지의 대용량화에 적합한, 레이트(rate)특성이 향상된 리튬 이차전지가 제공될 수 있다.

Description

리튬이차전지용 양극 활물질 및 그의 제조방법
본 발명은 리튬이차전지용 양극 활물질 및 그의 제조방법에 관한 것으로, 보다 구체적으로는 보다 향상된 레이트(rate) 특성을 갖는 리튬이차전지용 양극 활물질 및 그의 제조방법에 관한 것이다.
본 출원은 2013년 06월 18일에 출원된 한국특허출원 제10-2013-0069947호 및 2014년 06월 18일에 출원된 한국특허출원 제10-2014-0074346호에 기초한 우선권을 주장하며, 해당 출원의 명세서 및 도면에 개시된 모든 내용은 본 출원에 원용된다.
모바일 기기에 대한 기술 개발과 수요가 증가함에 따라 에너지원으로서의 이차전지에 대한 수요가 급격히 증가하고 있고, 그러한 이차전지 중에서도 높은 에너지 밀도와 작동 전위를 나타내고, 사이클 수명이 길며, 자기방전율이 낮은 리튬 이차전지가 상용화되어 널리 사용되고 있다.
또한, 최근에는 환경문제에 대한 관심이 커짐에 따라 대기오염의 주요 원인의 하나인 가솔린 차량, 디젤 차량 등 화석연료를 사용하는 차량을 대체할 수 있는 전기자동차(EV), 하이브리드 전기자동차(HEV) 등에 대한 연구가 많이 진행되고 있다.
이러한 전기자동차(EV), 하이브리드 전기자동차(HEV) 등은 동력원으로서 니켈 수소금속(Ni-MH) 이차전지 또는 높은 에너지 밀도, 높은 방전 전압 및 출력 안정성의 리튬 이차전지를 사용하고 있는데, 리튬 이차전지를 전기자동차에 사용할 경우에는 높은 에너지 밀도와 단시간에 큰 출력을 발휘할 수 있는 특성과 더불어, 가혹한 조건 하에서 10년 이상 사용될 수 있어야 하므로, 기존의 소형 리튬 이차전지보다 월등히 우수한 안전성 및 장기 수명 특성이 필연적으로 요구된다. 또한, 전기자동차(EV), 하이브리드 전기자동차(HEV) 등에 사용되는 이차전지는 차량의 작동 조건에 따라 우수한 레이트(rate) 특성과 파워(power) 특성이 요구된다.
현재, 리튬 이온 이차전지의 양극 활물질로는, 층상 구조(layered structure)의 LiCoO2와 같은 리튬-함유 코발트 산화물, 층상 구조의 LiNiO2와 같은 리튬-함유 니켈 산화물, 스피넬 결정구조의 LiMn2O4와 같은 리튬-함유 망간 산화물 등이 사용되고 있다.
LiCoO2 은 우수한 사이클 특성 등 제반 물성이 우수하여 현재 많이 사용되고 있지만, 안전성이 낮으며, 원료로서 코발트의 자원적 한계로 인해 고가이고 전기자동차 등과 같은 분야의 동력원으로 대량 사용하는 데에는 한계가 있다. LiNiO2 은 그것의 제조방법에 따른 특성상, 합리적인 비용으로 실제 양산공정에 적용하기에 어려움이 있다.
반면에, LiMnO2, LiMn2O4 등의 리튬 망간 산화물은 원료로서 자원이 풍부하고 환경친화적인 망간을 사용한다는 장점을 가지고 있으므로, LiCoO2 를 대체할 수 있는 양극 활물질로서 많은 관심을 모으고 있다. 그러나, 이들 리튬 망간 산화물 역시 사이클 특성 등이 나쁘다는 단점을 가지고 있다. LiMnO2은 초기 용량이 작고, 일정한 용량에 이를 때까지 수십 회의 충방전 사이클이 필요하다는 단점이 있다. 또한, LiMn2O4은 사이클이 계속됨에 따라 용량 저하가 심각하고, 특히 50℃ 이상의 고온에서 전해액의 분해, 망간의 용출 등으로 인해 사이클 특성이 급격히 저하되는 단점이 있다.
이러한 상황에서, 각각의 양극 활성재가 갖는 결점을 극복 내지 최소화하며, 전지 성능 밸런스가 우수한 활성재로서 층상 구조를 갖는 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트계 복합 산화물이 제안되었다. 그러나, 상기 층상 구조를 갖는 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트계 복합 산화물은 다양한 용도로 활용되기에는 특히 레이트 특성이 개선될 필요가 있다.
본 발명은 전술한 종래 문제점을 해결하기 위한 것으로, 레이트 특성이 우수한 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질을 제공하고자 한다.
또한, 본 발명은 전술한 양극 활물질의 제조방법을 제공하고자 한다.
본 발명의 일 양태에 의하면, 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질에 있어서, 상기 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질은 층상 구조를 갖고, 불소 코팅된 표면을 가지며, 이 때 상기 불소 코팅된 표면은 스피넬 유사상(spinel-like phase) 구조를 갖는 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질이 제공된다.

본 발명의 또 다른 양태에 의하면, 양극, 음극, 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막(separator) 및 전해액을 포함하는 리튬이차전지에 있어서, 상기 양극이 전술한 리튬이차전지용 양극인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬이차전지가 제공된다.

본 발명의 또 다른 양태에 의하면, 전술한 전지모듈을 중대형 디바이스의 전원으로 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지팩이 제공된다.
상기 중대형 디바이스는 전기자동차, 하이브리드 전기자동차, 플러그 인 전기자동차, 또는 전력저장장치일 수 있다.

본 발명의 층상 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질은 불소로 표면 코팅되어 있다.
층상 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질은 니켈, 망간, 코발트 중 Mn이 50중량% 이상의 조성을 갖는 임의의 양극 활물질일 수 있으며, 그의 비제한적인 예가 하기 일반식 1로 표시될 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.

상기 일반식 1에서, Mn/Ni 원자비율을 나타내는 z/y 값은 1 < z/y ≤ 20인 것이 바람직하다. z/y 값이 상기 상한치보다 큰 경우에는 안전성이 크게 저하될 수 있고, 하한치보다 작은 경우에는 높은 용량을 기대하기 어렵게 된다.

또한, Mn/Ni 원자비율을 나타내는 z/y 값은 1 < z/y ≤ 20인 것이 바람직하다.
또한, 상기 일반식 1 및 2에서 z≥0.5 인 것이 바람직하다.
상기 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질은 20 nm 내지 200 ㎛ 최장 직경의 입자 크기를 가질 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
불소 코팅은, 피코팅된 물질인 층상의 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질 표면에 적용되어 양극 활물질 표면이 스피넬 유사상을 형성할 수 있도록 소성 시 환원분위기를 형성한다. 이와 관련하여, 도 1a와 도 1b를 참조하면, 도 1a는 본 발명의 일 양태에 따라 불소 코팅된 양극 활물질의 SEM 사진이고, 도 1b는 상기 양극 활물질이 불소 코팅되기 전의 SEM 사진으로, 상기 SEM 사진에서의 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질은 플레이크(flake) 형태를 갖는다. 일반적으로, 불소 코팅 후에 양극 활물질 표면에 dot 형태 혹은 다른 형태의 표면 구조가 보이는 경우가 있으나, 본 발명의 일 양태에 따르는 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질에서는 불소 코팅이 양극 활물질 입자를 균일하게 혹은 거의 균일하게 코팅하면서 보호 피막을 형성하므로, 전해액으로부터의 공격을 적게 받는 장점을 갖는다.
일반식 1의 층상 양극 활물질 표면에 불소가 적용되어 스피넬 유사상을 형성하는 원리에 대해서는 아직까지 명확하게 밝혀지지 않았으나, 실험 결과에 의해 확인되고 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 양극 활물질의 불소 코팅에 의해, 양극활물질 근처에서 생성되는 산에 대한 영향력이 감소하거나, 양극활물질과 전해액과의 반응성이 억제됨으로써 전지의 용량이 급격하게 줄어드는 현상이 개선 되어 충방전 특성, 수명특성, 고전압, 높은 레이트 특성 및 열 안정성이 향상될 수 있다. 특히, 스피넬 유사상 구조의 표면을 갖는 본 발명의 일 양태에 따른 양극 활물질은 표면 구조의 변형없이 불소 코팅이 이루어지는 양극 활물질에 비해 레이트 특성을 향상시키는데 유리하다.
불소 코팅에 사용되는 불소 함유 화합물의 예로는 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드(Polyvinylidene fluoride: PVdF), AlF3, NH4F, CsF, KF, LiF, NaF, RbF, TiF, AgF, AgF₂, BaF2, CaF2, CuF2, CdF2, FeF2, HgF2, Hg2F2, MnF2, MgF2, NiF2, PbF2, SnF2, SrF2, XeF2, ZnF2, AlF2, BF3, BiF3, CeF3, CrF3, DyF3, EuF3, GaF3, GdF3, FeF3, HoF3, InF3, LaF3, LuF3, MnF3, NdF3, VOF3, PrF3, SbF3 ScF3, SmF3, TbF3, TiF3, TmF3, YF3, YbF3, TIF3, CeF4, GeF4,HfF4, SiF4, SnF4, TiF4, VF4, ZrF4, NbF5, SbF5, TaF5, BiF5, MoF6, ReF6, SF6, WF6, 불소-함유 가스 등을 들 수 있으나, 이들에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
상기 불소 코팅된 표면은 2 ㎚ 내지 20 ㎛ 두께 또는 2 ㎚ 내지 5 ㎛를 가질 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다. 불소 코팅된 표면이 상기 하한치보다 얇을 경우에는 스피넬 유사상이 적절하게 형성되지 않을 수 있고 상기 상한치보다 두꺼울 경우에는 Li 이온의 이동을 어렵게 하고, 전해액과 부반응이 많이 일어난다.
또한, 양극 활물질의 중량 기준으로 불소 코팅은 0.01 내지 8 중량% 또는 0.01 내지 5 중량%의 함량으로 포함될 수 있다. 불소 코팅의 함량이 상기 하한치 미만으로 사용되면 양극 활물질 표면에서 층상 구조의 스피넬 유사상 구조로의 변형이 이루어지지 않으며, 상기 상한치보다 과량으로 사용되면 양극 활물질의 상대적 비율이 감소하게 되어 용량이나 에너지 밀도가 감소하게 된다.
본 발명의 리튬 이차 전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트계 복합 산화물의 제조방법은 하기 단계를 포함하여 제조될 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다:
(a) 니켈 화합물, 망간 화합물 및 코발트 화합물을 균일하게 혼합하는 단계;
(b) 리튬 화합물을 첨가하고 소성 처리하여서 층상의 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질을 수득하는 단계; 및
(c) 층상의 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질의 표면을 불소 코팅하여서 불소 코팅된 표면이 스피넬 유사상을 갖도록 하는 단계.
상기 니켈 화합물의 예로는, Ni(OH)2, NiO, NiOOH, NiCO3·2Ni(OH)2·4H2O, NiC2O4·2H2O, Ni(NO3)2·6H2O, NiSO4, NiSO4·6H2O, 지방산 니켈염, 니켈 할로겐화물이 있다. 이들 중, 소성 공정시 NOX 및 SOX 등의 유해물질을 발생시키지 않은 관점에서, Ni(OH)2, NiO, NiOOH, NiCO3·2Ni(OH)2·4H2O, 및 NiC2O4·2H2O와 같이, 소성 처리시 질소 원자나 황 원자를 함유하지 않는 것이 바람직하다. 이러한 니켈 화합물은 1 종 단독으로 또는 2 종 이상을 혼합하여 사용할 수 있다.
망간 화합물의 예로는 Mn2O3, MnO2, 및 Mn3O4 등의 망간산화물, MnCO3, Mn(NO3)2, MnSO4, 아세트산 망간, 디카르복실산 망간염, 시트르산 망간 및 지방산 망간염과 같은 망간염, 옥시 수산화물, 그리고 염화 망간과 같은 할로겐화물이 있다. 이 중, MnO2, Mn2O3 및 Mn3O4이 바람직한데, 이는 소성처리 시에 Nox 및 SOx 및 CO2와 같은 가스를 발생하지 않고, 공업원료로서 저렴하게 입수할 수 있기 때문이다. 이러한 망간 화합물은 1 종 단독으로 또는 2종 이상을 혼합하여 사용할 수 있다.
코발트 화합물의 예로는 Co(OH)2, CoOOH, CoO, Co2O3, Co3O4, Co(OCOCH3)2·4H2O, CoCl2, Co(NO3) 2·6H2O, 및 Co(SO4)2·7H2O 을 들 수 있다. 이들 중, 소성 처리시에 NOx 및 SOx 등의 유해물질을 발생시키지 않는 점에서 Co(OH)2, CoOOH, CoO, Co2O3 및 Co3O4가 바람직하다. Co(OH)2 및 CoOOH 는 공업적으로 저렴하고, 반응성이 높다는 관점에서 더 바람직하다. 이러한 코발트 화합물은 1 종 단독으로 또는 2 종 이상을 혼합하여 사용할 수 있다.
원료의 혼합방법은 특히 한정되지 않으며, 원료는 습식 또는 건식 공정에 의해 혼합될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 볼밀, 진동밀, 비드밀 등의 장치를 사용하는 방법을 들 수 있다. 습식 혼합은, 보다 균일한 혼합이 가능하고, 또한 소성 공정에서 혼합물의 반응성을 높일 수 있기 때문에 바람직하다.
혼합 시간은 혼합 방법에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 그러나, 원료가 입자 레벨로 균일하게 혼합되는 한, 임의의 혼합 시간이 이용될 수 있다. 예를 들어 볼 밀(습식 또는 건식 혼합) 로 혼합하는 혼합시간은 통상 약 1 시간 ~ 2 일 정도이며, 비드밀 (습식 연속법) 로 혼합하는 체류 시간은 통상 약 0.1 시간 ~ 6 시간 정도이다.
습식 분쇄 후, 입자를 통상적인 방법으로 건조한다. 건조 방법은 특별하게 제한되지 않는다. 그러나, 생성하는 입자 재료의 균일성, 분말유동성 및 분말 처리성능, 그리고 구상의 이차 입자를 효율적으로 형성할 수 있는 관점에서 분무 건조가 바람직하다.
분무 건조에 의해 얻어진 분말을 Li2CO3, LiNO3, LiNO2, LiOH, LiOH·H2O, LiH, LiF, LiCl, LiBr, LiI, CH3OOLi, Li2O, Li2SO4, 디카르복실산 리튬염, 시트르산 리튬, 지방산 리튬염, 알킬리튬과 같은 리튬화합물과 충분하게 혼합한다.
이렇게 얻어진 분말 혼합물은 소성 처리된다. 이 소성 조건은 조성 및 사용되는 리튬 화합물 원료에 따라 결정된다. 소성 온도는 통상 800 ℃ 이상, 바람직하게는 900 ℃ 이상, 더욱 바람직하게는 950 ℃ 이상이며, 또한 통상 1100 ℃ 이하, 바람직하게는 1075 ℃ 이하, 더욱 바람직하게는 1050 ℃ 이하이다.
이어서, 상기 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질 표면에 불소-함유 화합물을 코팅한다. 코팅 방법의 예로는 불소-함유 화합물과 양극 활물질을 혼합하여 적정 온도에서 열처리하는 고상 반응, 불소-함유 화합물을 용매에 용해시켜 분산/분무하는 분무 건조법, 또는 기체를 사용하는 기상 반응 등을 들 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다. 고상 반응은 공정이나 비용 측면에서 유리하며, 300 ~ 600 ℃에서 5 내지 10시간 열처리하는 공정을 포함할 수 있다.
이와 같이 제조된 본 발명의 양극 활물질은 당업계에서 통상적으로 사용되는 바인더, 도전재와 함께 양극합제를 구성할 수 있다.
바인더는 양극 활물질과 도전재 등의 결합과 집전체에 대한 결합에 조력하는 성분으로서, 예컨대, 양극 활물질 100 중량부 기준으로 1 내지 30 중량부의 양으로 첨가될 수 있으나, 그 함량이 본 발명에서 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니다. 이러한 바인더의 구체적인 예는 특별히 한정된 것은 아니지만, 폴리불화비닐리덴(Polyvinylidene fluoride: PVdF), 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌(PTFE), 불소 고무, 스티렌 부타디엔 고무(styrene-butadiene rubber: SBR), 셀룰로오스계 수지 등을 들 수 있다.
도전재는 양극 활물질 100 중량부 기준으로 1 내지 50 중량부의 양으로 첨가될 수 있으나, 그 함량이 본 발명에서 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니다. 이러한 도전재의 구체적인 예는 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 도전성을 가진 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 흑연이나 아세틸렌 블랙과 같은 카본 블랙계 도전재를 사용할 수 있다.
분산매로는 N-메틸-2-피롤리돈, 디아세톤 알코올, 디메틸포름알데히드, 프로필렌글리콜 모노메틸에테르, 메틸 셀로솔브, 에틸 셀로솔브, 부틸 셀로솔브, 이소프로필 셀로솔브, 아세틸아세톤, 메틸이소부틸케톤, n-부틸 아세테이트, 셀로솔브 아세테이트, 톨루엔, 자일렌 및 이들의 혼합물로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 분산매를 사용할 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
전술한 양극합제 슬러리는 양극 집전체 위에 도포, 건조되어 리튬이차전지용 양극을 형성할 수 있다.
양극 집전체는 일반적으로 10 ~ 500 ㎛의 두께를 갖는다. 이러한 양극 집전체는, 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 높은 도전성을 가지는 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니며, 예를 들어, 스테인레스 스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티탄, 소성 탄소, 또는 알루미늄이나 스테인레스 스틸의 표면에 카본, 니켈, 티탄, 은 등으로 표면처리한 것 등이 사용될 수 있다.
양극 집전체 상의 양극합제 슬러리 두께는 특별히 제한되지 않으나, 예를 들어 10 내지 300 ㎛ 일 수 있으며, 활물질의 로딩양은 5 내지 50 mg/㎠일 수 있다.
본 발명의 다른 양태에서는, 양극, 음극, 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막(separator) 및 전해액을 포함하는 리튬이차전지에 있어서, 상기 양극으로 전술한 양극이 사용된 리튬이차전지가 제공된다.
또한, 당 기술 분야에 알려진 통상적인 방법에 따라 음극, 분리막, 전해액을 제조, 조립하여서 상기 양극과 함께 리튬이차전지를 제작할 수 있다.
음극 활물질의 비제한적인 예로는 종래 리튬이차전지의 음극에 사용될 수 있는 통상적인 음극활물질이 사용 가능하며, 특히 리튬 금속 또는 리튬 합금, 탄소, 석유코크(petroleum coke), 활성화 탄소(activated carbon), 그래파이트(graphite) 또는 기타 탄소류 등과 같은 리튬 흡착물질 등이 바람직하다. 음극 전류집전체의 비제한적인 예로는 구리, 금, 니켈 또는 구리 합금 또는 이들의 조합에 의하여 제조되는 호일 등이 있다.
분리막으로는 다공질 폴리에틸렌, 다공질 폴리프로필렌의 폴리올레핀계 필름, 다공성 코팅층이 다공성 기재 상에 형성되어 있는 유기/무기 복합 분리막, 부직포 필름, 엔지니어링 플라스틱(engineering plastic) 등을 사용할 수 있으나, 이들에 제한되는 것은 아니다. 분리막을 전지에 적용하는 공정으로는 일반적인 공정인 권취(winding) 이외에도 분리막과 전극의 적층(lamination, stack) 및 접음(folding) 공정이 가능하다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에서 사용될 수 있는 전해액은 A+B-와 같은 구조의 염으로서, A+는 Li+, Na+, K+와 같은 알칼리 금속 양이온 또는 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 이온을 포함하고 B-는 PF6 -, BF4 -, Cl-, Br-, I-, ClO4 -, AsF6 -, CH3CO2 -, CF3SO3 -, N(CF3SO2)2 -, C(CF2SO2)3 -와 같은 음이온 또는 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 이온을 포함하는 염이 프로필렌 카보네이트(PC), 에틸렌 카보네이트(EC), 디에틸카보네이트(DEC), 디메틸카보네이트(DMC), 디프로필카보네이트(DPC), 디메틸설폭사이드, 아세토니트릴, 디메톡시에탄, 디에톡시에탄, 테트라하이드로퓨란, N-메틸-2-피롤리돈(NMP), 에틸메틸카보네이트(EMC), 감마-부티로락톤 또는 이들의 혼합물로 이루어진 유기 용매에 용해 또는 해리된 것이 있으나, 이에만 한정되는 것은 아니다.
또한, 전해액에는 충방전 특성, 난연성 등의 개선을 목적으로, 예를 들어, 피리딘, 트리에틸포스파이트, 트리에탄올아민, 환상 에테르, 에틸렌 디아민, n-글라임(glyme), 헥사 인산 트리 아미드, 니트로벤젠 유도체, 유황, 퀴논 이민 염료, N-치환 옥사졸리디논, N,N-치환 이미다졸리딘, 에틸렌 글리콜 디알킬 에테르, 암모늄염, 피롤, 2-메톡시 에탄올, 삼염화 알루미늄 등이 첨가될 수도 있다. 경우에 따라서는, 불연성을 부여하기 위하여, 사염화탄소, 삼불화에틸렌 등의 할로겐 함유 용매를 더 포함시킬 수도 있고, 고온 보존 특성을 향상시키기 위하여 이산화탄산 가스를 더 포함시킬 수도 있으며, FEC(Fluoro-Ethylene carbonate), PRS(Propene sultone), FPC(Fluoro-Propylene carbonate) 등을 더 포함시킬 수 있다.
상기 전해액 주입은 최종 제품의 제조 공정 및 요구 물성에 따라, 전지 제조 공정 중 적절한 단계에서 행해질 수 있다. 즉, 전지 조립 전 또는 전지 조립 최종 단계 등에서 적용될 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 이차전지는 소형 디바이스의 전원으로 사용되는 전지셀에 사용될 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 다수의 전지셀들을 포함하는 중대형 전지모듈에 단위전지로도 바람직하게 사용될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명은 상기 전지모듈을 중대형 디바이스의 전원으로 포함하는 전지팩을 제공하고, 상기 중대형 디바이스는 전기자동차(Electric Vehicle, EV), 하이브리드 전기자동차(Hybrid Electric Vehicle, HEV), 플러그-인 하이브리드 전기자동차(Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, PHEV) 등을 포함하는 전기차 및 전력 저장장치 등을 들 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
이하, 본 발명을 구체적으로 설명하기 위해 실시예를 들어 상세하게 설명하기로 한다. 그러나, 본 발명에 따른 실시예들은 여러 가지 다른 형태로 변형될 수 있으며, 본 발명의 범위가 아래에서 상술하는 실시예들에 한정되는 것으로 해석되어서는 안 된다. 본 발명의 실시예들은 당업계에서 평균적인 지식을 가진 자에게 본 발명을 보다 완전하게 설명하기 위해서 제공되는 것이다.
실시예 1: 양극의 제조
층상의 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 복합 산화물인 LiaNi0.4Mn0.6O2 (1≤a<1.5) 100 g과 불소-함유 화합물인 PVdF 0.3g을 혼합하여, 500℃에서 5~10h 열처리 하였다. 불소 코팅된 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 복합 산화물을 수득하였다.
이어서, 상기 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 복합 산화물을 도전재 및 바인더와 함께 분산매에 용해시켜서 슬러리를 수득하고, 상기 슬러리를 알루미늄 집전체에 도포하고, 100 ~ 130 ℃의 온도에서 2시간동안 건조시켜서 양극을 제조하였다.
실시예 2: 리튬이차전지의 제조
실시예 1에서 수득한 양극을 리튬이차전지의 양극으로 사용하였다.
음극으로는 일반적으로 시판되는 Li metal을 사용하였다.
분리막으로는 폴리에틸렌 필름을 사용하여, 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 분리막을 개재시키고, 여기에 전해액으로 EC/DMC/EMC =3/4/3 혼합용매에 1몰의 LiPF6 용액을 사용하여 통상적인 제조방법에 따라 전지를 제조하였다.
비교예 1: 양극의 제조
층상의 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 복합 산화물을 불소 코팅하지 않고 사용한 것을 제외하고는 실시예 1과 동일한 방식으로 양극을 제조하였다.
비교예 2: 리튬이차전지의 제조
비교예 1에서 수득한 양극을 사용한 것을 제외하고, 실시예 2와 동일한 방법으로 리튬이차전지를 제조하였다.
평가예 1: 리튬이차전지의 용량 및 rate 측정
실시예 2 및 비교예 2에서 제조된 리튬 이차전지를 4.65V까지 current=0.1C 조건으로 충전하고, 그 용량을 측정하였다. 이어서, 2.75V까지 current=0.1C로 방전 용량을 측정하였다. 이들 결과를 하기 표 1에 기재하였다.

또한, 2.75~4.45V operating voltage에서 0.1C, 0.5C, 1.0C 및 2.0C-rate에서의 방전 용량을 측정하였다. 0.5C에서의 방전 용량을 도 2a와 도 2b에 도시하였다.
도 2b는 bare 양극 활물질을 동일한 방법으로 제조하고, 이들을 사용하여 동일한 방법으로 만든 셀의 triplicate 실험 그래프로, 동일한 종류의 양극 활물질을 사용한 셀임에도 불구하고 방전 용량의 편차가 크게 나타남을 알 수 있다. 이는 양극 활물질 표면이 불소 코팅되어 있지 않은 bare 샘플의 경우, 전해액에 표면 노출이 잘 되어 부반응이 일어나 퇴화를 가속화시키고, 특히, 양극 활물질의 일부 특정 구역에서 전해액 부반응이 더 심화되기 때문에 큰 편차가 발생된 것이라 판단된다.
이에 반해, 도 2a의 불소 코팅된 양극 활물질을 사용하여 제작된 셀의 triplicate 실험 그래프에서는 셀간 편차없이 약 50cycle 이후에서도 92% 이상의 용량 유지율을 나타냄을 알 수 있다. 이는 SEM에서 확인했듯이 표면에 고르게 피막이 형성되어 양극 활물질이 전해액으로부터 잘 보호되어 수 십 사이클 이후에도 천천히 퇴화하는 것을 의미한다.
또한, 비교예 2에서 가장 우수한 방전용량을 나타낸 전지셀과 실시예 2 전지셀의 rate capability를 도 3에 도시하였다.

  1. 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질에 있어서,
    상기 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질은 층상 구조를 갖고, 불소 코팅된 표면을 가지며, 이 때, 상기 불소 코팅된 표면은 스피넬 유사상(spinel-like phase)을 갖는 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질.

    상기에서, z>y이며, z>1-y-z≥0이고, x≥1이며, 0≤α≤1이고, M은 B, Li, Mg, Al, Ca, Sr, Cr, V, Ti, Fe, Co, Ni, Zr, Zn, Si, Y, Nb, Ga, Sn, Mo, W 및 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종 이상의 금속이다.
  4. 제2항 또는 제3항에 있어서,
    z≥0.5 인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질.
  5. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질은 20 nm 내지 200 ㎛ 최장 직경의 입자 크기를 가지는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질.
  6. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 불소 코팅된 표면은 2 nm 내지 20 ㎛ 두께를 가지는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질.
  7. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 일반식 1에서, Mn/Ni 원자비율을 나타내는 z/y 값은 1 < z/y ≤ 20인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질.
  8. 제1항에 있어서,
    불소 코팅이 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드(Polyvinylidene fluoride: PVdF), AlF3, NH4F, CsF, KF, LiF, NaF, RbF, TiF, AgF, AgF₂, BaF2, CaF2, CuF2, CdF2, FeF2, HgF2, Hg2F2, MnF2, MgF2, NiF2, PbF2, SnF2, SrF2, XeF2, ZnF2, AlF2, BF3, BiF3, CeF3, CrF3, DyF3, EuF3, GaF3, GdF3, FeF3, HoF3, InF3, LaF3, LuF3, MnF3, NdF3, VOF3, PrF3, SbF3 ScF3, SmF3, TbF3, TiF3, TmF3, YF3, YbF3, TIF3, CeF4, GeF4,HfF4, SiF4, SnF4, TiF4, VF4, ZrF4, NbF5, SbF5, TaF5, BiF5, MoF6, ReF6, SF6, WF6, 불소-함유 가스 및 이들의 혼합물로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 화합물에 의해 이루어진 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질.
  9. 하기 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질의 제조방법:
    (a) 니켈 화합물, 망간 화합물 및 코발트 화합물을 균일하게 혼합하는 단계;
    (b) 리튬 화합물을 첨가하고 소성 처리하여서 층상의 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질을 수득하는 단계; 및
    (c) 층상의 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질의 표면을 불소 코팅하여서 불소 코팅된 표면이 스피넬 유사상을 갖도록 하는 단계.
  10. 제9항에 있어서,
    상기 불소 코팅이 열처리 고상 방법, 분무 건조법 또는 기상 반응법에 의해 실시되는 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질의 제조방법.
  11. 제1항의 리튬이차전지용 리튬 니켈-망간-코발트 양극 활물질을 포함하는 양극합제용 슬러리로부터 제조된 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬이차전지용 양극.
  12. 양극, 음극, 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막(separator) 및 전해액을 포함하는 리튬이차전지에 있어서,
    상기 양극이 제11항의 리튬이차전지용 양극인 것을 특징으로 하는 리튬이차전지.
  13. 제12항에 따른 리튬 이차전지를 단위전지로 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지모듈.
  14. 제13항에 따른 전지모듈을 중대형 디바이스의 전원으로 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전지팩.
  15. 제14항에 있어서,
    상기 중대형 디바이스가 전기자동차, 하이브리드 전기자동차, 플러그 인 전기자동차 또는 전력저장장치인 것을 특징으로 하는 전지팩.
