본 명세서는 바나듐 용액, 이를 포함하는 전해액, 이를 포함하는 이차전지 및 이의 제조방법에 관한 것이다.

Description

바나듐 용액, 이를 포함하는 전해액, 이를 포함하는 이차전지 및 이의 제조방법
본 출원은 2014년 6월 13일자 한국 특허 출원 제10-2014-0072460호에 기초한 우선권의 이익을 주장하며, 해당 한국 특허 출원의 문헌에 개시된 모든 내용은 본 명세서의 일부로서 포함된다.
본 명세서는 바나듐 용액, 이를 포함하는 전해액, 이를 포함하는 이차전지 및 이의 제조방법에 관한 것이다.
바나듐 레독스 플로우 배터리(V-RFB)는 대표적인 흐름전지로 양극과 음극 전해질로 바나듐을 사용하며 전해질의 산화 및 환원 반응에 의해 충방전이 일어나는 이차전지이다. 일반적인 전지와의 가장 큰 차이점은 에너지가 저장되는 전해질을 순환시키면서 충전과 방전이 이루어진다는 점이다. 충방전은 산화와 환원의 전기화학적 반응이 일어나는 스택(stack)에서 이루어지고, 전기는 별도의 탱크에 보관되는 전해질에 저장되게 된다.
그러므로, 바나듐 레독스 플로우 배터리(V-RFB)는 대용량화, 경제성, 안정성 등의 장점이 있어, 차세대 에너지저장장치로 각광을 받고 있다. 전해액의 에너지 밀도(kW/L)을 높이기 위하여, 고농도 바나듐 전해액 개발이 필수이지만, 바나듐 전구체는 황산 수용액 상에서 낮은 용해도를 보인다는 문제점이 있다.
기존 일반적인 바나듐 전해액 제조는 증류수에 황산을 투입하여 2 내지 3몰의 황산 수용액을 제조하고, 제조된 황산 수용액에 바나듐 전구체를 투입하는 공정이다.
이 공정의 경우 침전에 대한 안정성을 고려할 경우에 보통 1.5몰 미만의 바나듐 전구체의 용해에 사용되는 방법으로 알려져 있다.
상기 바나듐 전해액의 제조에 있어서, 증류수 내에 녹아있는 용존 산소로 인하여 바나듐 전해액 중의 바나듐 이온이 산소와 결합하여 착화합물을 형성할 수 있고, 황산 수용액의 농도가 3몰 이상일 경우에 바나듐 전구체의 용해도가 낮아진다는 단점이 있다.
최근 고농도 바나듐 전해액 개발에 대한 연구가 계속되고 있으나, 대부분 카르복실산, EDTA, 금속염, 암모늄 염, 글리세린 및 알코올류를 첨가제로 투입하여 바나듐 염의 침전을 억제하고, 분산 안정성을 높이거나, 공정이 복잡한 전해법을 개발하는 연구에 그치고 있다.
첨가제를 사용하는 방법의 경우, 첨가제와 바나듐 이온과의 상호작용을 통해 바나듐 전구체의 용해도를 증가시킬 수 있으며, 침전 속도 및 침전 반응을 억제할 수 있으나, 전지 반응에서 바나듐 이온의 산화환원 가역반응속도가 낮아지는 문제와 전지 작동전압에서 첨가제가 전기분해되어 전지 전압강하 및 용량저하 또는 이산화탄소 및 수소기체와 같은 기체가 발생할 수 있다는 단점이 있다.
본 명세서는 바나듐 용액, 이를 포함하는 전해액, 이를 포함하는 이차전지 및 이의 제조방법을 제공하고자 한다.
본 명세서의 일 실시상태는
5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +), 산(acid) 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 준비하는 단계; 및
상기 바나듐 용액에 4가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 용해하는 단계
를 포함하는 바나듐 용액의 제조방법을 제공한다.
상기 5가 바나듐 이온, 산 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 준비하는 단계로서, 제1 실시상태는
증류수 내에서 4가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 탈산소화된 증류수에 용해하는 단계;
바나듐 전구체가 용해된 증류수와 산을 혼합하여 바나듐 용액을 제조하는 단계; 및
상기 바나듐 용액 중의 4가 바나듐 이온을 5가 바나듐 이온으로 산화시키는 단계를 포함한다.
상기 5가 바나듐 이온, 산 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 준비하는 단계로서, 제2 실시상태는 탈산소화된 증류수, 산, 또는 이들의 혼합물에 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 용해하는 단계를 포함한다. 이 때, 탈산소화된 증류수에 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 투입한 후 산과 혼합하는 공정을 추가로 수행할 수 있다. 또한, 산에 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 투입한 후 탈산소화된 증류수와 혼합하는 공정을 추가로 수행할 수 있다.
본 명세서의 또 하나의 실시상태는 4가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 성분, 탈산소화된 증류수 및 산(acid)을 포함하는 바나듐 용액으로서, 상기 바나듐 용액이 전극을 이용한 충전 또는 방전에 이용되지 않은 상태에서 상기 바나듐 성분이 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 것인 바나듐 용액을 제공한다.
본 명세서의 또 하나의 실시상태는 4가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 성분, 탈산소화된 증류수 및 산(acid)을 포함하는 바나듐 용액으로서, 상기 바나듐 용액은 1.5 내지 3.5 몰 농도의 바나듐를 포함하고, 상기 바나듐 용액 중의 산이 3 몰 농도인 상태에서 5℃에서 100시간 방치하였을 때, 바나듐 용액 전체 중의 바나듐 함량 대비 바나듐 용액 중에 용해되어 있는 바나듐 이온의 몰 백분비가 95% 초과인 것인 바나듐 용액을 제공한다.
또한, 본 명세서의 또 하나의 실시상태는 상기 전술한 실시상태에 따르는 바나듐 용액을 포함하는 전해액을 제공한다.
또한, 본 명세서의 또 하나의 실시상태는 상기 전술한 실시상태에 따르는 전해액을 포함하는 이차전지를 제공한다.
본 명세서의 몇몇 실시상태에 따르면, 바나듐 용액 중에 고농도의 4가 바나듐 이온을 유지하고, 바나듐의 침전을 방지할 수 있다. 이와 같은 바나듐 용액을 이차전지의 전해액에 사용함으로써 우수한 효율 및 안정성을 갖는 전지를 제공할 수 있다.
도 1은 본 명세서의 일 실시상태에 따른 실시예 1에 의하여 제조된 바나듐 용액을 나타낸 것이다.
도 2는 본 명세서의 일 실시상태에 따른 비교예 1에 의하여 제조된 바나듐 용액을 나타낸 것이다.
도 3은 본 명세서의 일 실시상태에 따른 실시예 1 및 비교예 2에 의하여 제조된 바나듐 용액에서 산(acid) 수용액 중에 용해된 바나듐 전구체의 농도에 따른 방전용량을 나타낸 그래프이다.
도 4는 본 명세서의 일 실시상태에 따른 실시예에 의하여 제조된 바나듐 용액의 분광광도계 그래프이다.

이하 본 발명을 보다 상세히 설명한다.
본 명세서의 일 실시상태는 바나듐 용액의 제조방법에 관한 것으로서,
5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +), 산(acid) 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 준비하는 단계; 및
상기 바나듐 용액에 4가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 용해하는 단계를 포함한다.
상기 실시상태에 따르면, 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 제조한 후, 여기에 4가 바나듐 이온을 용해하는 방법을 이용함으로써, 침전물 없이 고농도의 4가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 제공할 수 있다.
상기 실시상태에서는 탈산소화된 증류수가 사용된다. 증류수 내 용존 산소는 바나듐 이온이 결합하여 착화합물을 형성할 수 있다. 상기 실시상태에서는 용존 산소가 제거된 탈산소화된 증류수를 사용함으로써, 전해질의 침전 생성을 억제할 뿐만 아니라, 전지의 용량이 저하되는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
본 명세서의 또 하나의 실시상태에 따르면, 상기와 같이 탈산소화 증류수를 사용함으로써, 최종적으로 제조되는 바나듐 용액 중의 산소의 농도는 0.1ppm 내지 5ppm일 수 있으며, 상기 바나듐 용액 중의 산소의 농도는 0.1ppm 내지 1ppm일 수도 있다.
상기 4가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체는 증류수에 용해시 4가 바나듐 이온을 형성하는 것으로서, 예컨대 VOSO4가 사용될 수 있다.
바나듐 전구체는 수용액에서 V(II), V(III), VO2 +(IV), VO2 +(V) 등의 산화상태가 가능하다. 일반적으로 사용되는 바나듐 전구체는 VCl3, V2O5, 그리고 VOSO4 등이 있으나, VCl3·HCl 수용액으로 구성된 용액은 염소가스가 발생하는 문제점이 있고 V2O5를 직접 증류수에 용해하는 경우 용해도가 낮은 단점이 있다.
전술한 실시상태에 있어서, 상기 5가 바나듐 이온, 산 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액 중의 5가 바나듐 이온의 농도는 0.01몰 내지 2몰일 수 있다. 예컨대, 상기 바나듐 용액 중의 5가 바나듐 이온의 농도는 0.2몰 이하이다. 상기 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 용액 중의 5가 바나듐 이온의 농도가 0.2몰 이하일 때, 다른 종의 이온이 혼입되더라도 이온들간의 자체적인 레독스 산화환원 반응으로 인한 이온의 전자적 산화상태의 과도한 변화를 방지할 수 있다.
전술한 실시상태에 사용되는 산(acid)은 당 기술분야에 사용되는 것을 적용할 수 있으며, 예컨대, 황산, 질산, 염산, 개미산, 아세트산 등에서 선택되는 1종 이상을 단독 또는 혼합한 혼합 산을 사용할 수 있다.
일 실시상태에 따르면, 상기 5가 바나듐 이온, 산 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액 중의 산 농도는 0.5 몰 내지 7 몰이며, 구체적으로 3몰 내지 5몰일 수 있다. 최종 제조된 바나듐 용액 중의 산 농도도 역시 0.5몰 내지 7몰이며, 구체적으로 3몰 내지 5몰일 수 있다.
일 실시상태에 따르면, 전술한 바나듐 용액의 제조방법은 증류수에 비활성 가스를 흘려주어 탈산소화된 증류수를 제조하는 단계를 더 포함할 수 있다. 상기 비활성 가스로는 당 기술분야에서 알려진 것을 사용할 수 있다. 예컨대, 질소, 헬륨, 네온 및 아르곤 등이 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
일 실시상태에 따르면, 상기 바나듐 용액에 4가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 용해하기 전, 도중 또는 후에 상기 바나듐 용액을 80 ℃이상으로 가열하는 단계가 더 수행될 수 있다. 상기 가열 단계는 환류(reflux)를 포함할 수 있다. 상기 가열 단계에서의 가열 온도는 용액의 농도 균형이 무너지는 현상을 억제할 수 있는 범위가 적당하며, 산(acid)과 물의 끓는점 차이를 고려하여 100 ℃이상의 온도까지 가능하나, 80℃가 바람직하다. 또한, 상기 가열 단계는 비활성 가스 투입과 함께 이루어질 수 있으며, 이 경우 용액 내에서 내의 바나듐 이온과 결합하여 착화합물을 형성할 수 있는 용존 산소를 효과적으로 제거할 수 있다.
본 명세서의 일 실시상태(제1 실시상태)에 따르면, 상기 5가 바나듐 이온, 산(acid) 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 준비하는 단계는
증류수 내에서 4가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 탈산소화된 증류수에 용해하는 단계;
바나듐 전구체가 용해된 증류수와 산을 혼합하여 바나듐 용액을 제조하는 단계; 및
상기 바나듐 용액 중의 4가 바나듐 이온을 5가 바나듐 이온으로 산화시키는 단계를 포함한다.
상기 제1 실시상태에서 사용되는 4가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체로는 용해시 4가 바나듐 이온을 형성하는 것으로서, 예컨대 VOSO4가 사용될 수 있다.
상기 제1 실시상태에 있어서, 바나듐 전구체를 탈산소화된 증류수에 용해하기 전, 도중 또는 후에 80 ℃ 이상으로 가열하는 단계가 수행될 수 있다. 가열 단계에 대한 설명은 전술한 바와 같다. 상기 가열 단계는 비활성 가스 투입과 함께 이루어질 수 있으며, 이 경우 용액 내에서 내의 바나듐 이온과 결합하여 착화합물을 형성할 수 있는 용존 산소를 효과적으로 제거할 수 있다.
상기 제1 실시상태는 바나듐 전구체를 탈산소화된 증류수에 용해하기 전에 탈산소화된 증류수를 제조하는 단계를 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 제1 실시상태에 있어서, 4가 바나듐 이온을 5가 바나듐 이온으로 산화시키는 단계는 전기화학적인 방법을 이용할 수 있다.
본 명세서의 일 실시상태(제2 실시상태)에 따르면, 상기 5가 바나듐 이온, 산 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 준비하는 단계는 탈산소화된 증류수, 산, 또는 이들의 혼합물에 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 용해하는 단계를 포함한다. 이 때, 탈산소화된 증류수에 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 투입한 후 산과 혼합하는 공정을 추가로 수행할 수 있다. 또한, 산에 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 투입한 후 탈산소화된 증류수를 혼합하는 공정을 추가로 수행할 수 있다. 이 때 산은 순도 90% 이상의 산이 사용될 수 있다. 필요한 경우, 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체의 용해를 위하여 80℃ 이상으로 가열하는 단계를 수행할 수 있다.
상기 제2 실시상태는 상기 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 용해하는 단계 전 또는 후에; 상기 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 산 용액과 탈산소화된 증류수를 혼합하는 단계 전에 탈산소화된 증류수를 제조하는 단계를 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 제2 실시상태에 있어서, 상기 산 내에서 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체로는 산에 용해되어 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성하는 것이 사용될 수 있으며, 예컨대 V2O5가 사용될 수 있다.
V2O5는 용해되는 즉시 용액 중에서 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)이 되며, 상기 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)은 추가로 용해되는 바나듐 전구체 및 용매로부터 음이온을 받아들여 V2O3, V2O4, V2O5와 같은 산화물의 생성을 억제할 수 있다. V2O5를 사용할 경우 바로 5가 바나듐 이온이 형성되므로, 추가적인 산화수 변경 공정이 불필요하다.
전술한 실시상태들에 따라 제조된 바나듐 용액 중 바나듐 이온의 농도는 0.5 몰 이상, 예컨대 1 몰 내지 3.5 몰, 구체적으로 1.5 몰 내지 3.5 몰일 수 있다. 더욱 구체적으로, 전술한 실시상태들에 따라 제조된 바나듐 용액 중 바나듐 이온의 농도는 1 몰 내지 3 몰, 예컨대 1.5 몰 내지 2.6 몰일 수 있다. 특히, 상기 바나듐 용액은 1.5 몰 이상, 더욱 바람직하게는 2 몰을 초과하는 높은 바나듐 이온 농도를 갖는 경우에도 침전물 없이 안정성을 나타낼 수 있다.
본 명세서의 또 하나의 실시상태는 4가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 성분, 탈산소화된 증류수 및 산(acid)을 포함하는 바나듐 용액으로서, 상기 바나듐 용액이 전극을 이용한 충전 또는 방전에 이용되지 않은 상태에서 상기 바나듐 성분이 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 것인 바나듐 용액을 제공한다. 여기서, 바나듐 성분은 바나듐을 포함하는 성분이라면 모두 포함된다. 예컨대, 바나듐의 산화수가 변경된 경우나, 다른 물질과 착체를 형성한 경우도 바나듐을 포함하는 경우, 상기 바나듐 성분에 포함된다.
상기 실시상태에 있어서, '전극을 이용한 충전 또는 방전에 이용되지 않은 상태'란 표현은 상기 바나듐 용액이 전지에 투입되기 전, 또는 상기 바나듐 용액이 전지에 투입된 이후에도 충전 또는 방전을 위한 전기 화학적 반응이 일어나기 전을 의미한다.
상기 실시상태에 있어서, 바나듐 용액은 4가 바나듐 이온과 함께 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함한다. 이는 전술한 실시상태들에 따라, 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 용액에 4가 바나듐 이온을 용해시키는 방법을 이용한 결과이다. 5가 바나듐 이온의 유무는 당기술분야에 알려져 있는 방법을 이용하여 확인할 수 있다. 예컨대 용액의 색깔, UV-VIS.측정에 의한 흡광 파장, OCV(open circuit voltage)를 통하여 확인할 수 있다.
상기와 같이 5가 바나듐 이온의 유무를 확인하기 위하여, 확인하고자 하는 바나듐 용액과 동일한 바나듐 농도를 갖되, 5가 바나듐 이온을 갖지 않고 4가 바나듐 이온만을 갖는 기준 용액을 제조할 수 있다. 필요한 경우, 기준 용액의 바나듐 용액 중의 바나듐 농도와 확인하고자 하는 바나듐 용액의 바나듐 용액을 동일하게 하기 위하여, 확인하고자 하는 바나듐 용액을 희석할 수 있다. 이 때, 희석을 위하여 증류수가 사용될 수 있다.
예컨대, 상기 기준 용액은 하기와 같이 제조될 수 있다.
먼저, 확인하고자 하는 바나듐 용액 중에 용해된 바나듐 이온의 농도를 측정한다. 이 때, 바나듐 이온의 농도는 바나듐 용액의 일부를 취하여, 유도분광플라즈마(ICP) 방법으로 측정될 수 있다. 측정된 바나듐 이온의 농도와 동일한 농도의 4가 바나듐 이온을 부여할 수 있는 양의 3수화물 형태의 VOSO4를 0.65 리터의 3차 증류수에 투입하고, 30분간 마그네틱 스터러 교반을 진행한다. 상기 VOSO4는 VOSO4 기준 71.94%의 순도를 갖는다. 이어서, 마그네틱 스터러 교반을 유지하면서, 약 3몰 농도를 부여할 수 있는 양의 96.5% 순도 H2SO4을 서서히 투입한다. 이어서, 3차 증류수를 투입하여 용액의 부피가 1L가 되도록 조정한다. 바나듐 황산 수용액은 30분 이내에 완전 용해가 가능하지만, 용액의 온도가 제조과정 중 60℃ 수준까지 상승할 수 있으므로, 최종 상온 수준에 도달할 때까지 교반을 유지하고, 이후 마그네틱 스터러를 제거하고, 용액이 상온 수준까지 냉각됨에 따른 부피 감소를 3차 증류수로 한번 더 보정함으로써 기준 용액을 제조할 수 있다.
상기와 같은 방법으로 기준 용액을 제조시, 확인하고자 하는 바나듐 용액 중에 용해된 바나듐 이온의 농도와 같은 바나듐 이온을 용해시키기 어려운 경우, 기준 용액의 바나듐 이온의 농도에 맞도록 확인하고자 하는 바나듐 용액을 희석할 수 있다. 희석시 증류수가 사용될 수 있다.
일 예로서, 용액의 색깔을 확인하는 방법으로서, 바나듐 용액은 4가 바나듐 이온만을 포함하는 경우(기준 용액)에는 청색을 나타내지만, 바나듐 용액이 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 경우에는 검푸른 색을 나타낸다. 용액의 색깔을 확인하는 방법은 전술한 기준 용액을 제조하여 비교함으로써 더욱 확실한 결과를 얻을 수 있지만, 용액의 색상은 산의 농도나 바나듐 농도와 크게 상관없이 4가 바나듐 이온만이 존재하는 경우에는 선명한 파란색이 나타나는 반면, 5가 바나듐 이온이 존재하는 경우에는 검푸른색이 나타나기 때문에 기준 용액을 제조하지 않거나, 바나듐 이온의 농도가 상이한 용액을 비교하는 경우에도, 5가 바나듐 이온의 존재를 확인할 수 있다.
또 하나의 예로서, UV-VIS. 측정에 의한 흡광 파장을 측정하였을 때, 4가 바나듐 이온만을 포함하는 바나듐 용액(기준 용액)에 비하여 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 용액은 250 nm 내지 450 nm 중 적어도 일부, 일 예에 따르면 280 nm 내지 380 nm 중 적어도 일부에서 나타나는 흡광 파장이 장파장으로 쉬프트(shift)된다. 일 예에 따르면, 4가 바나듐 이온만을 포함하는 바나듐 용액(기준 용액)에 비하여 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 용액은 흡광도 세기 1.4에서 흡광 파장이 5 nm 이상, 예컨대 10 nm 이상 장파장으로 쉬프트될 수 있다. 또 하나의 예에 따르면, 4가 바나듐 이온만을 포함하는 바나듐 용액(기준 용액)에 비하여 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 용액은 흡광도 세기 0.1에서 흡광 파장이 10 nm 이상, 예컨대 15 nm 이상 장파장으로 쉬프트될 수 있다.
또 하나의 예로서, OCV(open circuit voltage) 측정시 4가 바나듐 이온만을 포함하는 바나듐 용액(기준 용액)에 비하여 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 용액은 OCV가 상승하는 경향을 나타낸다. 일 예에 따르면, 4가 바나듐 이온만을 포함하는 바나듐 용액(기준 용액)에 비하여 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 용액은 OCV가 0.05 V 이상, 예컨대 0.1 V 이상 상승할 수 있다.
일 실시상태에 따르면, 상기 바나듐 용액 중의 5가 바나듐 이온의 농도는 0.01 몰 내지 2몰이 포함될 수 있으며, 0.2 몰 이하가 바람직하다.
본 명세서의 또 하나의 실시상태는 4가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 성분, 탈산소화된 증류수 및 산을 포함하는 바나듐 용액으로서, 상기 바나듐 용액은 1.5 내지 3.5 몰 농도의 바나듐을 포함하고, 상기 바나듐 용액 중의 수소 원자 6몰 농도 또는 황산 3 몰 농도인 상태에서 5℃에서 100시간 방치하였을 때, 바나듐 용액 전체 중의 바나듐 함량 대비 바나듐 용액 중에 용해되어 있는 바나듐 이온의 몰 백분비가 95% 초과인 것인 바나듐 용액을 제공한다. 여기서 바나듐 성분의 의미는 전술한 바와 같다.
일반적으로 4가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 산 용액은 5℃ 이하와 같은 저온에서 침전 형성이 비교적 빠르게 진행된다. 특히 3 몰 황산 농도를 기준으로 1.5몰 이상에의 바나듐 농도에서는 침전속도가 빠른 것으로 알려져 있다. 그러나, 전술한 실시상태에 따르면, 1.5 몰 이상의 바나듐 농도에서도 5℃의 저온에서 대부분의 바나듐이 침전되지 않는다.
상기 실시상태에서는 바나듐을 1.5 몰 내지 3.5 몰 농도로 고농도로 포함함에도 불구하고, 대부분의 바나듐이 침전되지 않고 용액 중에 용해된 이온 상태로 존재한다. 바나듐의 침전은 산의 농도나 온도에 의하여 영향을 받을 수 있으므로, 상기 실시상태에서는 산의 농도 조건을 수소 원자 6몰 농도 또는 황산 3 몰 농도로, 온도 조건을 5℃로 한정하였다. 수소 원자의 농도는 황산 이외의 다른 산이 사용된 경우 산의 농도를 측정하기 위하여 사용될 수 있다.
일 실시상태에 따르면, 상기 바나듐 용액은 2 몰 내지 3.5 몰 농도의 바나듐을 포함한다.
일 실시상태에 따르면, 상기 바나듐 용액은 1.5 내지 3.5 몰 농도의 바나듐을 포함하고, 상기 바나듐 용액 중의 수소 원자 6몰 농도 또는 황산 3 몰 농도인 상태에서 5℃에서 100시간 방치하였을 때, 바나듐 용액 전체 중의 바나듐 함량 대비 바나듐 용액 중에 용해되어 있는 바나듐 이온의 몰 백분비가 96% 이상, 바람직하게는 97% 이상, 더욱 바람직하게는 98% 이상이다.
본 명세서의 일 실시상태에 따르면, 상기 전술한 실시상태에 따르는 바나듐 용액을 포함하는 전해액을 제공한다.
본 명세서의 일 실시상태에 따르면, 양극, 음극 및 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 구비된 상기 전술한 실시상태에 따르는 바나듐 용액을 포함하는 전해액을 포함하는 이차전지를 제공한다.
상기 바나듐 용액을 전해액으로 사용하는 이차전지는 전해액 저장용기의 부피증가 없이 전지용량을 향상시킬 수 있으며, 상기 전해액은 침전에 대한 안정성을 확보함으로써 전해액의 흐름저항 상승 등의 부작용을 방지할 수 있다.
또한, 종래의 기술에서는 카르복실산, EDTA, 금속염, 암모늄염, 알코올류 및 글리세린 등을 첨가제 혹은 침전 억제제로 전해액에 일정량 추가 투입하여 사용하였으나, 이와 같은 안정제들은 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +) 용액 상에서 가스를 생성시키는 부반응이 있을 수 있고, 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)의 환원성을 억제시키는 부작용 등이 있었다. 하지만, 본 명세서에 따른 바나듐 전해액은 안정제가 사용되지 않아 바나듐 이온의 부반응이 없으며, 기존의 전지운전 전압범위 내에서 안정성을 확보할 수 있고, 안정제를 추가 투입함으로써 발생하는 공정 비용 및 원재료 비용 등이 없으므로, 가격적인 면에서도 효율적이다.
본 명세서의 또 하나의 실시상태에 따르면, 전술한 실시상태의 이차전지는 당 기술분야에서 알려진 것을 적용할 수 있으며, 예컨대, 바나듐 레독스 흐름 전지, 리튬 폴리머 전지, 리튬 이온 전지, 니켈 수소 전지, 니켈 카드뮴 전지 등이 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
본 명세서의 또 하나의 일 실시상태에 따르면, 상기 이차전지는 바나듐 레독스 흐름전지이다.
이하, 본 명세서의 이해를 돕기 위하여 바람직한 실시예를 제시한다. 그러나, 하기의 실시예는 본 명세서를 예시하기 위한 것이며, 이에 의하여 본 명세서의 범위가 한정되는 것은 아니다.
<실시예 1>
0.02몰의 VOSO4가 용해된 3몰의 황산 수용액을 전기화학적 프로세스를 통해, 용액 내 존재하는 4가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)를 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)로 산화시킨 후, 여기에 2.5몰의 VOSO4를 용해하였다. 그리고, 환류장치와 함께 80℃로 30분간 가열, 교반하여 2.52몰의 바나듐 용액을 제조하였고, 상기 실시예 1에 의하여 제조된 바나듐 용액의 흡광도를 측정하여 하기 도 4의 그래프로 나타내었다.
도 4의 764nm 파장영역에서 관찰되는 지점은 4가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)에 관한 것이고, 상기 바나듐 용액 중 바나듐 이온의 형태는 대부분 4가로 존재하나, 용매상에 포함된 0.02몰의 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)에 의하여 4가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)의 일부가 자체적으로 산화, 환원되어 파장 390nm에서 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +) 또는 파장 610nm에서 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)의 형태로 존재할 수 있다는 것을 나타내고 있다.
<비교예 1>
0.02몰의 VOSO4가 용해된 3몰의 황산 수용액에 2.52몰의 VOSO4를 용해하였다. 그리고, 환류장치와 함께 80℃로 30분간 가열, 교반 하여 바나듐 용액을 제조하였다.
<비교예 2>
증류수에 황산을 투입하여 3몰의 황산 수용액을 제조하고, 제조된 황산 수용액에 바나듐 전구체인 1몰의 VOSO4를 용해하여, 1몰의 바나듐 용액을 제조하였다.
<실험예 1>
바나듐 용액의 침전 평가
본 명세서에 따라 제조된 바나듐 용액의 침전 평가를 하기 위하여 하기와 같은 방법을 사용하였다.
상기 실시예 1 및 비교예 1에 의하여 제조된 바나듐 용액을 각각 상온에서 방치하였다.
그 결과, 실시예 1에 의하여 제조된 바나듐 용액은 45일 경과 후에도 침전이 발생하지 않았으나, 비교예 1에 의하여 제조된 바나듐 용액은 2일 경과 후 침전이 발생하였고, 도 1 및 2에 침전 평가 결과를 나타내었다.
바나듐 용액의 방전용량 평가
상기와 같이 제조된 바나듐 용액의 방전용량을 평가하기 위하여 하기와 같은 방법을 사용하였다.
50x50mm 전극 크기를 갖는 단위전지에 이온교환막으로 나피온 분리막을 적용하였으며, 총 부피 75cc의 상기 실시예 1 및 비교예 2에 의하여 제조된 바나듐 전해액을 분당 25cc의 유속으로 전지에 순환 공급하였다.
상기 방전용량 평가 결과를 하기 도 3에 나타내었다.
도 3에 나타난 바와 같이, 상기 실시예에 의하여 제조된 바나듐 용액은 상기 비교예 2에 의하여 제조된 바나듐 용액에서의 바나듐 전구체 농도 증가분만큼 방전용량의 상승효과가 관찰되었다.
<비교예 3> - 기준 용액의 제조
1리터 볼륨플라스크에 3차 증류수를 65%정도 채운 뒤, 2.02몰 상당의 VOSO4 457.7g을 투입하여 30분간 마그네틱 스터러 교반을 진행하였다. 이때 사용된 바나듐 전구체 VOSO4는 3수화물 형태였으며, VOSO4 기준하여 71.94%의 순도를 가졌다. 이후, 3몰 상당의 96.5% 순도 H2SO4 304.9g을 마그네틱 스터러 교반을 유지하면서 서서히 투입하였다. 이후 1리터에 부족한 만큼의 3차 증류수로 용액의 부피가 1리터가 되도록 맞춰주었다. 최종 상온 수준에 도달할 때까지 교반을 유지하고, 이후 마그네틱 바를 제거하고, 용액이 상온수준까지 냉각됨에 따른 부피 감소를 3차 증류수로 한번 더 보정하여 주고 제조공정을 종료하였다.
<실시예 2>
1리터 볼륨플라스크에 3차 증류수를 65%정도 채운 뒤, 0.02몰 상당의 V2O5를 1.83g 투입하여 30분간 마그네틱 스터러 교반을 진행하였다. 이때 사용된 바나듐 전구체 V2O5의 순도는 99.5%의 순도를 가졌다. 이후, 3몰 상당의 96.5%순도 H2SO4 304.9g을 마그네틱 스터러 교반을 유지하면서 서서히 투입한 후 2시간 이상 추가 교반을 진행하였다. 이후 2.0몰 상당의 VOSO4 453.2g을 투입하여 완전히 용해가 되도록 2시간 이상 마그네틱 스터러 교반을 진행하였다. 용액의 부피가 1리터가 되도록 보정하는 작업은 최종수용액의 온도가 상온에 도달한 뒤 마그네틱 바를 제거한 후 진행하였다.
<실험예 2>
침전물 및 용액 색깔 확인
실시예 2에서 제조된 바나듐 용액은 검은 빛이 도는 파란색을 띠고 있었으며, 5℃에서 100시간 경과 후(A1) 및 240시간 경과 후(A2)에 관찰하였으나, 침전이 발생하지 않았음을 확인하였다(바나듐 용액 전체 중의 바나듐 함량 대비 바나듐 용액 중에 용해되어 있는 바나듐 이온의 몰 백분비 100%). 반면, 비교예 3에서 제조된 바나듐 용액은 파란색을 띠고 있었으며, 5℃에서 20시간 경과 후(B1) 관찰하였을 때 침전 seed가 형성되었음을 관찰하였고(바나듐 용액 전체 중의 바나듐 함량 대비 바나듐 용액 중에 용해되어 있는 바나듐 이온의 몰 백분비 95%), 240 시간 경과 후(B2)에는 침전이 다량 발생하였다(바나듐 용액 전체 중의 바나듐 함량 대비 바나듐 용액 중에 용해되어 있는 바나듐 이온의 몰 백분비 75%).
UV-VIS. 흡광분석법
비교예 3 및 실시예 2에서 각각 제조된 용액을 0.5 ml 취하여 3 M 황산 수용액 10 ml과 혼합하여 희석용액을 제조하고, 이에 대하여 UV-Vis. 흡광분석을 수행하였다. Base sample은 3M 황산 수용액이었으며, 이후 상기 희석 용액 2종을 100-1,000 nm 파장 범위에서 순차 분석을 진행하고 그 결과를 도 5에 나타내었다.
도 5에 따르면, 순수한 4가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 비교예 3의 용액에 비하여 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 실시예 2의 용액에서 280 - 380 nm에 존재하는 흡광 파장이 오른쪽으로 쉬프트되었다. 구체적으로, 도 5에 따르면, 기준 용액(비교예 3) 대비 실시예 2에서 흡광도 세기 1.4에서 14 nm(307 nm-> 321nm) 쉬프트되고, 흡광도 세기 0.1에서 23 nm(353nm -> 376 nm) 쉬프트되었다.
참고를 위하여, 산화수가 상이한 1M 바나듐 이온 용액 0.5 ml을 3M 황산과 혼합하여 UV-Vis.를 측정한 결과를 도 6에 나타내었다. 4가 바나듐 이온의 경우 780 nm 부근에서 주 피크가 형성되었다. 다른 피크와는 달리 5가 바나듐 이온은 200-450 nm에서 흡광 영역이 관찰되었다. 이와 같은 5가 바나듐 이온의 흡광 파장의 특성으로 인하여, 상기와 같이 4가 바나듐 이온만을 포함하는 경우에 비하여 흡광 파장이 오른쪽으로 쉬프트됨을 알 수 있다. 2가, 3가, 4가 및 5가 바나듐 이온의 4종의 샘플은 다음과 같은 방법으로 제조되었다.
최초의 바나듐 수용액은 VOSO4와 황산을 증류수에 혼합한 용액이었으며, 이때 바나듐의 산화수는 4가였으며, 바나듐의 농도는 1M, 황산의 농도는 3M이었다. 이후 5x5cm 활성면적을 갖는 단위전지에 전극으로서 카본펠트를 장착하고, 상용분리막을 장착하고, 양쪽 전극에 25ml/min의 속도로 상기 4가 전해액 50ml을 각각 순환 공급하였으며, 1.4V까지 50mA/cm2의 전류밀도로 정전류/정전압 방법으로 충전을 수행하였다. 정전압 모드에서 주사전류가 최초 전류밀도의 10%수준에 도달하면 충전을 종료하여, 음극에서 환원된 3가 바나듐 용액, 양극에서 산화된 5가 용액을 취하여 흡광분석을 수행하였다. 또한, 2가 바나듐 용액의 제조는 상기의 방법과 모두 동일하나, 단전지에 투입되는 최초의 4가의 전해액의 부피가 상이하였고, 충전전압이 1.7V였다. 다시말해, 음극에는 50ml의 4가 용액을 순환공급하고, 양극에는 100ml의 4가 용액을 순환공급하였으며, 1.7V까지 50mA/cm2의 전류밀도로 정전류/정전압 방법으로 충전을 수행하였다. 정전압 모드에서 주사전류가 최초 전류밀도의 10%수준에 도달하면 충전을 종료하여, 음극에서는 바나듐 2가 용액을, 양극에서는 5가 용액을 취하였다. 단, 음극의 2가 용액은 공기중에 노출되면 3가 상태로 산화하는 특성이 매우 강하므로, inert gas를 공급하면서 공기 노출을 최소화 하였으며, UV-Vis. 샘플을 제조함에 있어서도, 측정 직전에 희석용액을 제조하여 곧바로 측정을 진행하였다.
OCV 측정
작업전극(working electrode)에 glassy carbon을 적용하고, Reference에 Ag/AgCl을 사용하였다. 비교예 3 및 실시예 2에서 각각 제조된 용액 20ml를 준비한 후, 상온(23℃)에서, 그리고 얼음물에 의한 냉각으로 제조된 13℃ 용액 및 3℃ 용액의 상태에서 OCV를 측정하였다. 측정 결과를 하기 표 1에 나타내었다.

상기 표 1에 나타난 바와 같이, 4가 바나듐 이온에 5가 바나듐 이온이 1% 정도 섞인 실시예 2의 샘플에서 0.13V 정도 OCV가 상승하였음을 확인할 수 있었다.

Claims (17)

  1. 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +), 산(acid) 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 준비하는 단계; 및
    상기 바나듐 용액에 4가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 용해하는 단계
    를 포함하는 바나듐 용액의 제조방법.
  2. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 5가 바나듐 이온, 산 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 준비하는 단계는
    증류수 내에서 4가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 탈산소화된 증류수에 용해하는 단계;
    바나듐 전구체가 용해된 증류수와 산을 혼합하여 바나듐 용액을 제조하는 단계; 및
    상기 바나듐 용액 중의 4가 바나듐 이온을 5가 바나듐 이온으로 산화시키는 단계를 포함하는 것인 바나듐 용액의 제조방법.
  3. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 5가 바나듐 이온, 산 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 준비하는 단계는 탈산소화된 증류수, 산, 또는 이들의 혼합물에 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 용해하는 단계를 포함하는 것인 바나듐 용액의 제조방법.
  4. 청구항 3에 있어서, 상기 5가 바나듐 이온, 산 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 준비하는 단계는 탈산소화된 증류수에 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 투입한 후 산과 혼합하는 단계를 포함하거나, 산에 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체를 투입한 후 탈산소화된 증류수와 혼합하는 단계를 포함하는 것인 바나듐 용액의 제조방법.
  5. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 바나듐 전구체는 VOSO4인 것인 바나듐 용액의 제조방법.
  6. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +), 산(acid) 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액을 준비하는 단계 전에, 증류수에 비활성 가스를 흘려주어 탈산소화된 증류수를 제조하는 단계를 더 포함하는 바나듐 용액의 제조방법.
  7. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +), 산(acid) 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액 중의 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +)의 농도는 0.01 몰 내지 2몰인 것인 바나듐 용액의 제조방법.
  8. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 5가 바나듐 이온(VO2 +), 산(acid) 및 탈수소화된 증류수를 포함하는 바나듐 용액 중의 산(acid) 농도는 0.5몰 내지 7몰인 것인 바나듐 용액의 제조방법.
  9. 청구항 1에 있어서, 상기 바나듐 전구체를 용해하기 전, 도중 또는 후에 80℃ 이상으로 가열하는 단계를 더 포함하는 바나듐 용액의 제조방법.
  10. 청구항 3에 있어서, 상기 5가 바나듐 이온을 형성할 수 있는 바나듐 전구체는 V2O5인 것인 바나듐 용액의 제조방법.
  11. 4가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 성분, 탈산소화된 증류수 및 산(acid)을 포함하는 바나듐 용액으로서, 상기 바나듐 용액이 전극을 이용한 충전 또는 방전에 이용되지 않은 상태에서 상기 바나듐 성분이 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 것인 바나듐 용액.
  12. 청구항 11에 있어서, 상기 바나듐 용액 중의 산소의 농도는 0.1ppm 내지 5ppm인 것인 바나듐 용액.
  13. 청구항 11에 있어서, 상기 바나듐 용액과 동일한 농도의 4가 바나듐 이온 을 포함하고 5가 바나듐 이온을 포함하지 않는 기준 용액에 비하여, 검푸른 색을 갖거나, 250-450nm 중 적어도 일부에 존재하는 흡광 파장이 장파장으로 쉬프트되었거나, OCV가 증가한 것인 바나듐 용액.
  14. 4가 바나듐 이온을 포함하는 바나듐 성분, 탈산소화된 증류수 및 산(acid)을 포함하는 바나듐 용액으로서, 상기 바나듐 용액은 1.5 내지 3.5 몰 농도의 바나듐를 포함하고, 상기 바나듐 용액 중의 산이 3 몰 농도인 상태에서 5℃에서 100시간 방치하였을 때, 바나듐 용액 전체 중의 바나듐 함량 대비 바나듐 용액 중에 용해되어 있는 바나듐 이온의 몰 백분비가 95% 초과인 것인 바나듐 용액.
  15. 청구항 14에 있어서, 상기 바나듐 용액 중의 산소의 농도는 0.1ppm 내지 5ppm인 것인 바나듐 용액.
  16. 청구항 11 내지 15 중 한 항에 따른 바나듐 용액을 포함하는 전해액.
  17. 양극, 음극 및 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 구비된 청구항 16에 따른 바나듐 용액을 포함하는 전해액을 포함하는 이차전지.
