Definitions
- the present invention relates generally to solutions for covering the joints between an inner wall and an adjoining structure in a room.
- the invention is useful when applying for example skirting boards along inner floors and ceilings.
- the invention concerns a wall trimming system according to the preamble of claim 1 and a method for applying a trim member according to the preamble of claim 10.
- various solutions exist for attaching trimmings along the lower and/or upper edges of an inner wall. Normally, a construction worker here adapts a wooden strip onsite and manually nails, screws or glues the strip to the wall so that it covers the joint area.
- different systems of prefabricated modules are also known .
- JP-59-165783 discloses a solution wherein a rail is fastened to the floor. Then , wall boards are attached to the rail, and a metal-sheet trim member is hooked onto the rail to cover it.
- the trim member does not extend over the wall board, and thus does not cover the joint between the wall board and the rail. Moreover, it is relatively complicated to length customize the trim member of metal onsite.
- US 3,397,495 shows a partition wall with yieldable cap members. Also here, a rail is fastened to the floor. The rail has a lon- gitudinal channel section on top of which a wall board is placed. As a result, the wall board is separated somewhat from the floor level. After attaching the wall board to the rail, a skirting board is screwed onto the wall board, so that the skirting board covers both a joint area between the wall board and the channel section and a joint area between the channel section and the floor. Such screw attachment, however, is time consuming and may cause ugly discontinuities in the outer surface of the skirting board .
- US 1 ,981 ,240 describes a wall construction , wherein a wall board is attached to a rail on the floor, and metal trim plates are fitted along the floor to cover the rail and a lower part of the wall board .
- the metal trim plates are held in place by spring fingers on the back side of the metal trim plates and upwardly extending flanges connected to the rail. Thereby, screw attachment can be avoided . Nevertheless, the upwardly extending flanges are visible, and it is difficult to length customize the metal trim plates onsite.
- NL 8500553 shows an extruded l-shaped rail having a lower flange with downward protruding frames which overlaps and grips the top of the partition wall. Its upper flange has outer and central ribs. Between the ribs are pieces of double-sided adhe- sive tape which secure the rail to the ceiling . On either side of the central strut of the rail are channels, covered by snap-in sealing strips. Main cables can be arranged to run along the channels, branching down through square apertures and shafts in the wall to the switches, sockets, etc. This may provide a neat installation of electric circuits. However, it is a relatively expensive and complicated system for covering a joint area between a wall and the ceiling .
- the object of the present invention is therefore to provide a solution through which such a joint area can be covered in an uncomplicated and cost efficient manner without risking the occurrence of any dents or other undesired alteration of the trim members resulting from the fastening means there for.
- the object is achieved by the wall trimming system described initially, wherein at least one mounting clamp is included, which has first and second legs configured to be clamped around an edge side of the wall board.
- the edge side extends along the joint area.
- the edge side connects a front side of the wall board with a back side thereof, which is opposite to the front side.
- the trim member includes a groove extending in the length dimension along the trim member.
- the groove has an opening towards the bottom side of the trim member, and the opening is configured to receive the second leg of the at least one mounting clamp when the mounting clamp is clamped around the edge side, so as to hold the trim member against the wall board and make the trim member cover the joint area.
- This system is advantageous because it enables covering the joint area between an inner wall and an adjoining structure (e.g. the floor or the ceiling) in a manner being very efficient both with respect to time and material consumption . It is also straightfor- ward to obtain an aesthetically appealing overall result.
- the first and second legs are parallel to one another; and preferably, the first and second legs are flexibly connected to one another via a bridging section that is perpendicular to both legs. There- by, it straightforward to clamp the mounting clamp around the edge side of the wall board. Introducing the second leg into the groove of the trim member is also rendered relatively uncomplicated.
- the second leg includes a resilient flange which is configured to engage an inner wall of the groove via friction .
- the resilient flange is attached to the second leg along a line of attachment.
- the resilient flange further has a protruding portion of which a most protruding part is positioned closest to the bridging section .
- each of the first and second legs has a flat section configured to extend along the back and front sides respectively of the wall board .
- the trim member includes first and second sections, where the first section is oriented at a right angle relative to the second section . Consequently, the trim member is configured to cover the joint area between a pair of wall boards, which form a right-angled wall corner.
- the right-angled wall corner is an inner corner. Therefore, the first and second sections are arranged with the proxi- mal side of the first section oriented at an angle of 270 degrees to the proximal side of the second section .
- the right-angled wall corner is outer corner. Therefore, the first and second sections are arranged with the proximal side of the first section oriented at an angle of 90 degrees to the proximal side of the second section .
- Such prefabricated corner elements are desirable, since thereby significant amounts of time can be saved onsite when mounting the trim members in a room. Further, it possible to accomplish very appealing joints between the first and second legs.
- the object is attained by the method described initially, wherein at least one mounting clamp is attached to a wall board with first and second legs of the mounting clamp clamped around an edge side of the wall board.
- the edge side extends along the joint area connecting a front side of the wall board with a back side thereof, which back side is opposite to the front side.
- the method involves pushing the proximal side of the trim member along the front side of the wall board towards the second leg of the at least one mounting clamp.
- the trim member contains a groove that extends in the length dimension of the trim member.
- the groove has an opening towards the bottom side, and the opening is configured to receive the second leg. Consequently, pushing the proximal side of the trim member towards the second leg results in the second leg being introduced into the groove, and the pushing continues until a portion of the second leg has engaged by friction into an inner wall of the groove. Hence, the trim member is held tightly against the wall board and the adjoining structure. This method is advantageous because the trim member can attached in highly simple manner and efficient manner.

- Figure 1 shows a mounting clamp 100 according to one embodiment of the invention
- Figure 2 shows a trim member 200 according to one embodiment of the invention
- Figure 3 illustrates how the trim member 200 is attached to a wall board 300 via the mounting clamp 100.
- the trim member 200 and at least one mounting clamp 100 form a wall trimming system, which is configured to cover a joint area between the wall board 300 and another structure in a room, e.g. a floor or a ceiling, that adjoins the wall board 300.
- the wall board 300 may either form a part of a wall section (i.e.
- the wall board 300 itself may constitute a wall section (e.g. a partition wall in an office space).
- another trim member 200 is preferably mounted on the opposite side of the wall board 300 as well.
- at least one additional mounting clamp 100 may be attached to the wall board, which at least one additional mounting clamp 100 is rotated 180 degrees around the cross section of the wall board 300 relative to the mounting clamp 100 represented in Figure 3 (i.e. a mirrored version of the mounting clamp 100 shown)
- the trim member 200 has the general shape of an extended cuboid (or a parallelepiped), which has a proximal side PS, a distal side DS, a top side TS and a bottom side BS respectively that are all adapted to extend in a length dimension in parallel with the joint area.
- the proximal side PS is configured to face towards a front side 312 (i.e. the "pretty side") of the wall board 300, while the distal side DS is configured to face away from the front side 312 (i.e. be shown to the room).
- the bottom side BS is configured to face towards the adjoining structure, for example the floor; and the top side TS is configured to face in the general opposite direction.
- a carpenter/construction worker adapts by sawing a length of the trim member 200 to the relevant measure of the room in which the trim member 200 is to be applied.
- the mounting clamp 100 has first and second legs 1 1 1 1 and 1 12 respectively, which are configured to be clamped around an edge side 310 of the wall board 300.
- the edge side 310 extends along the joint area and connects the front side 312 of the wall board 300 with a back side 31 1 thereof, which is opposite to the front side 312.
- the first and second legs 1 1 1 1 and 1 12 of the mounting clamp 100 are parallel to one another and are flexibly connected to one another via a bridging section 1 10 that is perpendicular to each of the first and second legs 1 1 1 and 1 12.
- the trim member 200 contains a groove 212 that extends in the length dimension along the entire trim member 200. Thus, wherever one cuts it off, the end cross section of trim member 200 remains the same.
- the groove 212 has an opening 215 towards the bottom side BS, which opening 215 is configured to receive the free end of the second leg 1 12 of the mounting clamp 100 when clamped around the edge side 310. Consequently, as the second leg 1 12 is pushed into the groove 212, the trim member 200 will be held tightly against the wall board 300.
- the trim member 200 covers the joint area between the wall board 300 and the adjoining structure, such as the floor 400 depicted in Figures 4 and 7, or the ceiling 800 showed in Figure 8.
- each of the first and second legs 1 1 1 and 1 12 preferably includes a flat section con- figured to extend along the back and front sides 31 1 and 312 respectively of the at least one wall board 300.
- the second leg 1 12 preferably includes a resilient flange 120, which is configured to engage an inner wall of the groove 312 via friction .
- the resilient flange 120 is attached to the second leg 1 12 along a line of attachment 121 , and the resilient flange 120 has a protruding portion pointing towards the bridging section 1 10.
- a most protruding part 122 of the resilient flange 120 is positioned clo- sest to the bridging section 1 10, for instance as illustrated in Figure 1 .
- the second leg 1 12 will slide smoothly into the groove 212 when the trim member 200 is pushed along the front side 312 of the wall board 300 towards the mounting clamp 100.
- the second leg 1 12 will require a relatively strong force to remove the trim member 200 from the mounting clamp 100.
- Figure 4 shows a part of a room in which trim members 200 and 500 are attached along the floor 400 in an inner corner IC of the room according to one embodiment of the invention .
- a first two- legged trim member 500 is here attached in the inner corner IC, which is represented by a pair of wall boards 300a and 300b.
- the first two-legged trim member 500 includes first and second sections 510a and 510b respectively.
- Figure 5 shows the first two-legged trim member 500 in further detail.
- the first section 510a is oriented at a right angle relative to the second section 510b. Since the trim member 500 is to be mounted in an inner corner IC, the first and second sections 510a and 510b of the trim member 500 are arranged with the proximal side PS of the first section 510a oriented at an angle a of 270 degrees to the proximal side PS of the second section 510b.
- Figure 6 shows a second two-legged trim member 600 according to one embodiment of the invention, which second two-legged trim member 600 is configured to be attached around an outer corner OC of a wall 300d and 300c, see Figure 7.
- the first and second sections 610c and 610d are arranged with the proximal side PS of the first section 610c oriented at an angle a of 90 degrees to the proximal side PS of the second section 610d .
- Figure 8 shows a part of a room in which trim members 200 and 500 instead are attached along the ceiling 800 in an inner corner IC according to one embodiment of the invention.
- the exact same design and mounting procedure can be applied as described above with reference to Figures 1 to 4, however where the mounting clamp 100 is clamped around a topmost edge side of the wall board 300.
- Figure 8 shows an inner corner IC, the same principle is also true for trim members applied to a joint area between one or more wall boards and the ceiling around an outer corner.
- an outer end of at least one of the sections 510a and 510b or 610c and 610d is beveled , such that a likewise beveled adjoining trim member 200 can be linked smoothly thereto with a discrete joint.
- the at least one mounting clamp 100 is attached with a first leg 1 1 1 thereof located on a back side 31 1 of the wall board 300 and a second leg 1 12 located on a front side 312 of the wall board 300, such that a respective free end of each leg 1 1 1 and 1 12 points away from the edge side 310.
- the wall board is mounted against a supporting structure (e.g . a floor 400 or a ceiling 800) with the edge side 310 adjoining the supporting structure, so that the free ends of the first and second leg 1 1 1 and 1 12 respectively also point away from the supporting structure.
- a supporting structure e.g . a floor 400 or a ceiling 800
- a step 930 follows in which a proximal side of a trim member is pushed along the front side 312 of the wall board 300 towards the adjoining structure, so that the free end of the second leg 1 12 is introduced into a groove 212 of the trim member 200.
- a step 940 checks if a portion of the second leg 1 12 has engaged by friction into an inner wall of the groove 212. If so, the procedure ends; and otherwise, the procedure loops back to step 930 for continued pushing of the trim member 200 towards the adjoining structure.
