Definitions
- the present invention relates to the development of a new composition for treating soils contaminated with petroleum or derivatives thereof, which has the advantage of recovering both soil and hydrocarbon.
- the methods for obtaining said composition are described. Additionally, a method for treating soils contaminated with oil or its derivatives is provided.
- Soil contamination is caused by the presence of xenobiotic chemicals (by man) or other alteration in the natural soil environment. It is usually caused by industrial activity, agricultural chemicals, or improper waste disposal.
- the most common chemicals involved are petroleum hydrocarbons, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (such as naphthalene and benzo (a) pyrene), solvents, pesticides, lead and other heavy metals, where such contamination correlates with the degree of industrialization and intensity of use of chemical products.
- Concern for soil contamination is mainly due to health risks, direct contact with contaminated soil, pollutant vapors, and secondary contamination of water supplies inside and underlying the soil.
- the mapping of contaminated soil sites and the resulting cleaning are long-term tasks that involve high costs, since they require large investments in geology, hydrology, chemistry, and computer modeling, as well as a determination of the origin of chemical waste.
- Another method to remedy contaminated soils is to extract contaminants from the soil by electroosmosis (3).
- an electric field is applied to the region of the soil to be treated and the treatment solution moves through the soil.
- this technique is complex and requires the presence of groundwater to ensure the sprinkling of bacteria.
- compositions comprising solvents such as hexane, surfactants such as SDS, or biosurfactants such as ramnolipid, tannin, saponin, aescin or lecithin ( 5).
- solvents such as hexane
- surfactants such as SDS
- biosurfactants such as ramnolipid, tannin, saponin, aescin or lecithin
- This application is intended to protect a composition for treating soils contaminated with petroleum or derivatives thereof, comprising surfactants, emulsifiers, preservatives, pH regulator, thickener, water and ethanol, wherein said composition comprises 20 to 40% ethanol, preferably 25% to 30%.
- the composition may comprise anionic surfactants selected from sodium dodecyl sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulphonate or polyoxyethylene ether of sodium sulfate fatty alcohol.
- anionic surfactant can be found from 1.0% to 6.0%, preferably from 4.5% to 5.0% by weight in the composition.
- the composition may comprise a non-ionic surfactant selected from fatty alcohol ethoxylates, coconut oil fatty acid diethanolamide or alkyl phenol ethoxylates, wherein said non-ionic surfactant can be found from 10% to 15% by weight, preferably from 11% to 12% in the composition.
- the composition may comprise a humectant selected from glycerin, ethylene glycol or an ester thereof, wherein said humectant can be found from 0.1% to 0.5%, preferably from 0.2% to 0.3% by weight in the composition.
- the composition may also contain a chelating agent selected from Sodium Polyphosphate or Sodium EDTA, wherein said chelating agent can be found from 0.1% to 0.5%, preferably from 0.2% to 0.3% by weight in the composition.
- a chelating agent selected from Sodium Polyphosphate or Sodium EDTA, wherein said chelating agent can be found from 0.1% to 0.5%, preferably from 0.2% to 0.3% by weight in the composition.
- the composition may also contain a pH regulator such as citric acid, where said pH regulator can be found from 0.1% to 0.5%, preferably from 0.2% to 0.3% by weight in the composition.
- the composition may also contain a thickening agent selected from NaCI, NH4CI, wherein said thickening agent can be found from 0.1% to 0.5%, preferably from 0.2% to 0.3% by weight in the composition.
- the composition may also contain a preservative agent such as sodium benzoate, wherein said preservative can be found from 0.1% to 0.5%, preferably from 0.2% to 0.3% by weight in the composition.
- a preservative agent such as sodium benzoate
- the present invention further relates to a method for treating soils comprising the following steps: (i) putting the composition comprising surfactants, emulsifiers, preservatives, pH regulator, thickener, water and ethanol with the contaminated soil in a container that allows the homogenization of the soil with the composition, where the soil must be in the lower part of the container and the composition must be injected under pressure so that it completely covers the solid, (ii) recover the decontaminated soil by centrifugation
- composition was obtained to treat soils contaminated with petroleum or derivatives thereof (R0002), which comprises, in a preferential but not limitative manner (according to the options disclosed in this document for each additive according to its activity) the following components:
- Composition R002 was prepared according to the following method: Ammonium lauryl sulfonate, coconut oil fatty acid diethanolamide, glycerin, sodium polyphosphate, sodium benzoate in water were gently mixed with gentle stirring; once homogenized, NaCI was added and mixed until dissolved and acid was added citric to adjust the pH to 6. Finally, ethanol was added and volume completed with water.
- composition for treating contaminated soils according to example 1 on the contaminated soil was injected under pressure, in an amount sufficient to cover the soil without overflowing the container.
- the mixture was homogenized
- the decontaminated soil was analyzed, first, by the retort method.
- the retort is a device that allows the measurement of the percentage of crude and / or water, and the estimation of the total solids (suspended and dissolved), contained in a sample of a cut or a mud, based on water or crude.
- the retort operates by heating a known volume of fluid (sludge) in its chamber, to allow vaporization of its liquid components. These vapors are condensed and collected in a graduated container, in order to calculate the volume percentage. The percentage of total solids, then, can be found by difference.
- the fat content was evaluated by the EPA 9071 B method, which is used to quantify the low concentrations of oil and grease in the soil, sediments, sludge and other solid materials susceptible to chemical drying and solvent extraction with n-hexane.
- This method uses n-hexane as Soxhlet extraction solvent, the results of this method are called "Removable material with n-hexane (HEM)".
- TPH total petroleum hydrocarbons
- Petroleum is characterized as non-polar molecules composed of only carbon and hydrogen that can be defined as all the materials in the oil and grease residue that will not be adsorbed by a polar sorbent, where silica gel is the most frequent choice of sorbent
- the method comprises adding 3.0 g of silica gel to a hexane solution of the oil and grease residue, filtering the silica gel, evaporating to dryness and weighing the residue.
