Definitions
- This invention relates to weighting means which is associated with a fishing rod and which is suitable for facilitating rod balance and stability during a casting action.
- Fishing rods are typically identified by their weight (meaning the weight of line or lure required to flex a fully loaded rod) and action (describing the speed with which the rod returns to its neutral position).
- weight meaning the weight of line or lure required to flex a fully loaded rod
- action describing the speed with which the rod returns to its neutral position.
- rods used today namely graphite, fiberglass and bamboo rods, of which the most popular rod tends to be graphite for its light weight characteristics and its ability to allow for further and more accurate casting.
- a well designed rod typically comprises an elongate body that has a smooth, progressive taper from butt to tip.
- a properly positioned reel is connectable to the elongate body at such a position that the reel constitutes a pivot point between two balanced levers, with the first lever extending between the butt end of the rod and the reel; with the second lever extending between the reel and tip end of the rod.
- a user's dominant hand generally supports the reel, while the non-dominant hand pivots the butt end of the rod about the reel to cast a line extending from the tip end. Casting distance and accuracy is a direct result of the leverage that the first lever exerts on the second lever about the reel pivot.
- the applicant has identified a novel way to overcome or at least alleviate this problem by increasing casting power and rod speed, and resultant rod balance and stability during the casting action in an effort to increase casting distance and repeatable casting position.
- weighting means which is operatively associated with a fishing rod for temporarily increasing weight in a butt of a rod during a casting action so as to improve casting distance and position.
- the weighting means may disconnectably be connectable to the butt of a rod during the casting action, such that it is removable after casting.
- the weighting means may disconnectably be connectable to a user's hand which is used for pivoting the butt about a reel.
- the weighting means may be characterised therein that it is operatively associated with the rod between a butt end and a reel.
- the weighting means may coaxially be aligned with the elongate axis of the rod.
- the weighting means may be an elongate weight which is at least partially insertable into or connectable to a butt end of the rod.
- the weighting means may disconnectably be connectable to a butt of the rod such that it at least partially circumferentially engages the rod.
- the weighting means may be worn by a user, and particularly in association with a user's casting hand which is used for exerting a force on the butt of a rod during casting.
- the weighting means may be included in a weighted casting glove.
- the casting glove may include at least one pocket for receiving varying weights.
- the weighting means may be included in a weighted casting bracelet, which is releasably connectable to a wrist of a user's casting hand so as temporarily to increase the force that the casting hand exerts on the rod butt during a casting action.
- the weighting means may be provided in different weight ranges with the weight of a weighting means that is required for a particular application to be determined by a user's length, body type and the like. Typically weight ranges include 50g, 150g and 200g weights.
- the weighting means may be manufactured from lead or iron, although it will be appreciated that various materials would be suitable for manufacturing the weighting means.
- the weighting means may be suitable for any type of fishing rod, including, but not limited to fly rods, spinning rods and/or bait casting rods.
- FIGURE 1 illustrates a partial rod, including a butt, and a reel, with a first embodiment of the weighting means being disconnectably connectable to a butt end of the rod through a spring-loaded snap-fit configuration
- FIGURE 2 illustrates a second embodiment of the invention wherein the weighting means is screwed onto the butt end of the rod
- FIGURE 3 illustrates a third embodiment of the invention wherein the weighting means is connectable to a rod such that it at least partially circumferentially engages the butt;
- FIGURE 4 illustrates a fourth embodiment of the invention wherein the weighting means is positioned in a casting glove
- FIGURE 5 illustrates a fifth embodiment of the invention wherein the weighting means is insertable into a butt end of a hollow rod;
- FIGURE 6 illustrates a sixth embodiment of the invention wherein the weighting means includes a flexible sleeve which may be slid over a butt of a rod, and which includes at least one pocket for accommodating different casting weights
- FIGURE 7 illustrates a seventh embodiment of the invention wherein the weighting means is suspended from a butt end of a rod;
- FIGURE 8 illustrates an eighth embodiment of the invention wherein the weighting means is again inserted into a butt of a hollow rod
- FIGURE 9 illustrates a ninth embodiment of the invention wherein the weighting means is a rigid sleeve which is disconnectably connectable to a rod such that it entraps the butt within the sleeve.
- FIG. 1 illustrates a first embodiment of the invention wherein the weighting means is designated by reference numeral [18].
- the weighting means [18] is an elongate weight which is connectable to a butt end [16] of the rod [10] through a spring-loaded snap-fit configuration [20], the arrangement being such that the weight is coaxially oriented with the elongate axis of the rod.
- This embodiment provides an additional advantage that, once the weighting means [18] is connected to the rod [10] it lengthens lever distance between the reel [12] and end [16.1 ] of the butt [14], which in turn increases the leverage exerted on the rod [10] during casting.
- FIG. 2 illustrates a similar weighting means [22], but wherein the weighting means [22] is screw-fitted onto the butt end [16] of the rod [10], the arrangement being such that the weighting means [22] terminates at one end thereof in a screw thread [24] which is configured to engage a complimentarily dimensioned screw thread (not shown) extending into the butt [14].
- the weighting means [26] includes a semi-tubular weighted sleeve [28] and two sets of arms [30] extending from opposite ends of the sleeve [28] and which are configured releasably to snap-fit about a rod [10] such that the sleeve [28] partially circumferentially engages the butt [14].
- Figure 4 illustrates a fourth embodiment of invention wherein the weighting means [32] is removably secured within a casting glove [34] which a user wears on his/her non-dominant hand during the casting process, such that the casting glove [34] provides additional weight to the butt end [16] of the rod [10] during the casting action.
- the casting glove [24] may include at least one, or a number of, pockets for receiving weighting means [32] of different weight ranges.
- the weighting means are at least partially insertable into a hollow butt [14] such that the weighting means are co-axially orientated with the elongate axis of the rod [10].
- the weighting means [36] is an elongate weighted shaft which is positioned inside a hollow butt [14] and maintained in positioned by a removable end cap [38].
- the weighting means [40] includes a shaft body [42] and two weighted balls [44] extending from opposing ends of the shaft body [42] and connected to the shaft body [42] through a connection arm [46].
- the weighting means [40] is also maintained in position inside a hollow butt [14] by means of a removable end cap [38].
- FIG. 7 illustrates yet another embodiment of the invention wherein the weighting means [48] is simply connected to and suspended from a butt end [16] of the rod [10].
- the weighting means are embedded in a sleeve which is configured releasably to engage a rod [10] such that the butt [14] is at least partially encased within the sleeve.
- Figure 8 proposes a flexible sleeve [52] which is slid over a butt [14] and which may include at least one, or a number of, pockets [54] which can accommodate different weights.
- Figure 9 provides for rigid sleeve weighting means [56] which include two hingedly connectable, semi-tubular sleeve halves [56.1 ; 56.2] which are hingedly connected to each other through a hinge [58].
- the two semi-tubular sleeve halves [56.1 ; 56.2] are positioned over the butt [14] and releasably secured to each other through securing means [60].
