- the subject matter described herein relates to a synchronized braking system for a two-wheeled vehicle, according to an embodiment of the present subject matter.
- the braking system usually, includes at least one brake assembly, such as a front wheel brake assembly and a rear wheel brake assembly for a front wheel and a rear wheel, respectively.
- brake assemblies may include, but are not limited to a cam lever, a hinge pin, and a pair_ of brake shoes.
- each of the front wheel brake assembly and the rear wheel brake assembly is connected to a brake lever for actuation.
- the brake lever may be coupled to a pair of brake shoes for applying friction to each wheel of the two-wheeled vehicle, as and when required.
- the brake lever can be connected to the brake assembly in a variety of ways.
- the brake lever can be connected to the brake assembly by means of a cable. In such a case, one end of the cable may be secured to the brake assembly, and the other end of the cable may be secured to the brake lever. Consequently, actuation of the brake lever may result in actuation of the brake assembly and subsequently, the brake may be applied.
- the front wheel and the rear wheel are provided with separate braking systems.
- two-wheeler braking systems usually _ include either hand-operated brakes for both the wheels or include a combination of hand-operated and foot-operated brakes.
- the front wheel brakes are hand-operated, and include a front wheel brake lever mounted on a handle of the two- wheeled vehicle for actuation, whereas the rear wheel brakes can be foot-operated by a rear wheel brake pedal provided near a foot-rest of the rider.
- braking systems that allow simultaneous actuation of a front brake and a rear brake by application of a single brake lever have been developed.
- Such braking system is capable of uniting the braking operation of both the front wheel brake and the rear wheel brake with the help of a single braking force transmitting member, for example a rear wheel braking force transmitting member.
- a single braking force transmitting member for example a rear wheel braking force transmitting member.
- the front wheel brake and the rear wheel brake can be simultaneously applied by actuating a single braking force transmitting member, for example, the rear wheel braking force transmitting member.
- braking systems may ensure that the deceleration of the vehicle can be increased and subsequently, the stopping distance may be reduced.
- a front wheel brake lever may also be provided to independently operate the front wheel brake.
- a cable from each of the front wheel brake lever and the rear wheel braking force transmitting member may be connected to the front wheel brake assembly.
- a cable connects the rear wheel braking force transmitting member to the front wheel brake assembly.
- another cable connects a front wheel brake lever to the front wheel brake assembly.
- the front wheel brake assembly may include a cam lever and hinge pin for supporting each of the cables. Therefore, the first cable and the second cable may be coupled to the front wheel brake assembly through the cam lever, and may maintain a contact with the corresponding hinge pin.
- the conventional braking systems employ a large number of components and linkages to connect the rear brake lever to both the rear wheel brake assembly and the front wheel brake assembly. Consequently, weight of such braking systems may be substantially high. Further, such heavy and complex braking systems with the large number of components may require greater maintenance, and skilled labor. Such a situation may add to the maintenance cost of the vehicle. In addition, due to lack of space on the vehicle, accommodating such a bulky arrangement poses a problem. Accordingly, the conventional braking systems may suffer from lack of overall braking effectiveness, increased weight, and high costs.
- such braking systems are provided to improve braking efficiency while actuating rear braking force transmitting member alone over standard brake system that has independent control for both the brakes.
- prior art braking systems that involves simultaneous operation of front wheel brake and rear wheel brake also include front wheel brake that are hydraulically controlled, for example, a hydraulic front disc brake.
- front wheel brake is hydraulically controlled disc brake
- rear wheel brake is drum brake.
- the front wheel disc brake is hydraulically controlled by a hydraulic fluid dispensing unit having a reservoir that stores hydraulic braking fluid, which when actuated . by the front wheel brake actuating lever dispenses required quantity of hydraulic braking fluid, thereby effecting front wheel disc brake.
- a separate lever responsive to the rear wheel braking force transmitting member is capable of being independently connected to the hydraulic fluid dispensing unit, such that, the actuation of the rear wheel braking force transmitting member enables dispensing of hydraulic brake fluid from the hydraulic fluid dispensing unit through the actuation of the separate lever.
- the hydraulic fluid dispensing unit is provided with a single cylinder for effecting two mechanical actuations, for instance, actuation by the front wheel brake lever, and by the separate lever. In such a case, the actuation of one lever leads to a freeness in the other lever causing an unpleasant braking feel for the rider. Sometimes, it may also lead to rider panic.
- conventional braking systems involving simultaneous actuation of the front wheel brake and the rear wheel brake by application of a single braking force transmitting member may also include two separate hydraulic dispensing units each having separate cylinders. In such cases, there are separate hydraulic brake lines for actuating the front wheel disc brake independently. However, accommodating two separate hydraulic dispensing units and independent brake lines makes the braking system more cumbersome and causes severe space constraint in the vehicle layout. Such braking systems, also increases no. of parts and overall cost.
- the SBS assembly of the present subject matter enables use of a single hydraulic brake line instead of a plurality of brake lines connecting the brake caliper of the front brake assembly from the handle bar mounted master cylinder assembly.
- the SBS assembly of the present subject matter is provided with a compact and cost effective design.
- the master cylinder assembly includes a main cylinder and an auxiliary cylinder meant for actuation of front brake assembly and SBS assembly is integrated into a compact assembly that is capable of being mounted in the vicinity of the handlebar assembly of the two-wheeled vehicle.

- the brake fluid 302 through the auxiliary feed path 324 is allowed to enter a main cylinder 304 through a main feed passage 312 and a main replenishing passage 310.
- the passage of the brake fluid 302 through both the passages 310, 312 ensures that the pressure inside the main cylinder 304 during the actuation of the lever 120 is maintained, and the brake fluid 302 inside an actuating chamber 330 of the main cylinder 304 is dispensed to the front brake caliper (not shown) to effect braking forces on the front wheel brake (not shown).
- actuation of the front brake lever 104 causes actuation of a main piston 308 disposed inside the main cylinder 304, which further causes the main piston 308 to linearly move pushing against a main spring 328.
- the forward displacement of the main piston 308 causes the main feed passage 312 to be closed and thereby preventing any dispensing of brake fluid 302 from the auxiliary feed path 324 into the actuating chamber 330, and causing the brake fluid 302 from the actuating chamber 330 to be dispensed to the front brake caliper (not shown) to effect braking forces on the front wheel brake (not shown).
- FIG. 7A and FIG. 7B illustrate a sectional view and a perspective view of the master cylinder assembly 102, in accordance with an embodiment of the present subject matter.
- the reservoir 326 is disposed substantially above the main cylinder 304 and the auxiliary cylinder 320 is disposed substantially below the main cylinder 304.
- the lever holder 126 is integrally formed with the auxiliary cylinder 320.
- the auxiliary cylinder 320 is disposed with its longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the main cylinder 304. In an alternative embodiment, the auxiliary cylinder 320 is disposed with its longitudinal axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the main cylinder 304
