Definitions
- the present invention relates to an optical cable termination and / or splice box, commonly referred to as a "termination box”, to be commonly applied to fiber-optic networks called FTTH ("fiber to the home ”) to protect an optical splitter between a fiber optic from a boxed multi-fiber distribution cable and multiple optical drop cables, usually in the form of a compact cable (" low friction "), and / or optical fusion splices between one or more distribution cable optical fibers and a respective optical branch cable (multi-fiber optical cable).
- FTTH fiber to the home
- the optical termination box of the present invention is of the type usually applied in overhead installations, being fixed to the building's strand or facade having a base, a hinged lid to the base, sealing elements acting between the base and the lid. and between the base and the different distribution, branch and termination cables (or approach - drop cables), and also inside the housing elements for accommodating optical adapters for connectorized freckles and any fusion splices in " splitter "and in derivation.
- Fiber-optic networks require the provision of user-activation splice points and endpoints, which are protected by termination and / or distribution boxes generally installed externally and overhead.
- a splice point for example, one or more s fibers from a distribution cable received at a termination / distribution box are fused spliced to the respective fibers of a branch cable that exit from said box to reach a new splice point or a user activation endpoint .
- one of the fiber optic cable fibers arriving at an aerial termination box can be splittered to provide termination cables directed to end users of the network.
- Fiber optic cable strands that reach a termination box but are not connected to a termination cable (drop cable) may pass through the box, unchanged or amended to a new extension cable, to proceed towards a new user splicing or activation point.
- termination boxes shall be constructed to receive at least one multi-fiber distribution cable, and to release one or more branch cables and / or a compact drop cable, requiring accommodation. for splitter or splice fusion splices.
- a problem with these housings arises from the risk of damage to the compact terminal cables already installed therein during maintenance operations of the optical network, when the installer needs to move the internal fiber accommodation elements in the housing, causing frequency, improperly bending the compact optical termination cables and even damaging the connection adapters of these termination cables, which need to be disconnected from the adapters for the installer to have access to fiber melt areas.
- termination boxes have been proposed with the inner housing elements of the compact terminating cables physically separated from the inner housing elements of the multi-fiber branch cables.
- the known termination boxes present yet another drawback resulting from the fact that they allow the cover to be closed even if the installer has not anchored the compact terminal cable (drop cable) correctly, allowing in this case the compact cable and, consequently, the data transmission network are susceptible to undesirable and even unacceptable movements under current regulations.
- the present invention aims to provide a terminal box for optical access networks, aerial installation and which is of simple and robust construction with few parts. for easy and safe handling of the fiber splicing elements by the respective installer team without interference with the termination cable connection elements to be handled by another installer team.
- the present invention further aims to provide an aerial installation optical termination box which, in addition to its simple and safe construction, is endowed with a high degree of tightness that does not require the installer's special care and is provided with a sealing system. double acting on the box, distribution cables, branch cables and termination cables and allowing to contain large jets of water in a first stage and even droplets and small insects in a second stage, with drainage between the two stages.
- Still another object of the invention is to provide an aerial installation optical termination box that is not only simple and sturdy in construction but ensures the correct anchorage of the termination cables (drop cables) upon closing. of the lid.
- the optical termination box comprises: a base having a bottom wall and peripheral walls defining at least one front edge and side openings for passage of multifiber optical cables; a hinged lid to the base and having a top wall and peripheral walls defining at least one rear edge being movable between a closed position seated against the base and an open position; and a hinged tray at the base and having a rear face and a front face movable between a first position with its rear face seated on the base and the front face exposed to the installer and a second position in which it exposes the rear face in a horizontal position. to the installer.
- the peripheral walls of the base have multiple front edges which define, two by two, a drainage channel, with two peripheral walls having their front edges and the respective channel. drainage line following the inner contour of the side openings, each side opening housing and retaining an elastomeric sealing sleeve, closing the cross section of each side opening not occupied by a multi-fiber optic cable through said side opening, the lid having its peripheral walls provided with multiple rear edges, whereby in the closed position of the lid the front and rear edges of the base and lid, in the regions devoid of the side openings, are interlocked together, forming a sealing maze.
- the tray further incorporates, in the region of the side openings and on its front face: a pair of side cradles, each taking the form of a channel with its recessed front edges, each lateral cradle being inferiorly provided with projecting rear edges, at least one of the which have cooperative extensions, in sealing overlap, with respective sealing bushings; and a pair of lateral elastomeric sealing members with their front edge provided with slots aligned with the recesses of the front edges of the side cradles, said slots and recesses aligned with each other receiving the tight fit of the respective end cables, being an extension of a rear edge of the lid seated against a respective sealing member and an extension of another rear edge of the cooperating lid overlapping with a front edge of a respective side cradle.
- the termination box further comprises an anchor member engaged and retained within each side cradle and having a front face provided with anchor cutouts aligned with the recesses of the respective side cradle and into which the respective end cables are fitted and anchored, by pressure / interference, being an extension of at least one of the rear edges of the lid when closed, seated against a respective end cable, forcing it into the respective anchor cutout.
- the different aspects of the invention allow optical fiber fusion or splitter splicing operations to be carried out with the tray open and horizontal, without risk of undue bending or unwanted manipulation of the front cable connections provided on the front face. from the tray.
- the new construction ensures a reliable seal, regardless of operator interference, by forming labyrinth between the facing edges of the lid and the base and also by the provision of bushings and sealing elements acting in the through openings of the multi-fiber optic cables and the compact terminal cables respectively, these sealing means being operatively associated with a intermediate drainage.
- the new solution also allows the enclosure lid to be closed only with the existing terminal cables properly seated in the anchor elements.
