Definitions
- This invention relates to locks.
- this invention relates to mortise locks operable by a corresponding key.
- Mortise lock is a commonly used door lock.
- One part included in a typical mortise lock installation is a profile cylinder assembly.
- the cylinder In a conventional mortise cylinder assembly the cylinder is fitted inside a housing and it has a slit for a key entry which is offset of a center and is open at the cylinder outer diameter.
- Single axis or multi axes pin cylinders are used in a mortise lock.
- the key has serrations on one edge of a flat face to lift locking pins and align the contact surface of the housing and cylinder.
- the key will have fewer key combinations and therefore, can cause a security issue.
- a dimple type key In multi axes locks, a dimple type key is used.
- the dimple type key provides more key combinations, thereby eliminating security issues. But it is very critical to design, manufacture, and assemble this type of locks, thus increases complexity and reduces the productivity.
- Another one disadvantage associated with the multi axes locks is that, it is critical to make a master key combination in mortise cylinder profile.
- the main aim of a lock manufacturer is to design and manufacture good quality locks providing high security, large number of key combinations, different key arrangements like individual customer key, master key, grand master key and emergency key. Further, it should be possible to manufacture locks and keys in large quantities without requiring very complex and expensive machines or processes.
- An object of present disclosure is to provide a mortise lock assembly with a closed key slot profile in a cylinder, which is having multi axes pin cylinder assembly i.e. dimple key.
- Another object of the present disclosure is to provide a mortise lock assembly with a closed key slot profile, which is easy to manufacture and assemble at low cost.
- the present disclosure envisages a mortise lock assembly with a closed key slot profile.
- the mortise lock assembly comprises a profiled cylinder lock housing, two angularly displaceable lock cylinders, and an arrestor means.
- the profiled cylinder lock housing comprises two spaced apart cylindrical hollow members, a central slot and a connecting member.
- the two spaced apart cylindrical hollow members define annular spaces.
- two rows of holes configured on profile cylinder lock housing define parallel passages in the connecting member extending to the annular spaces of the cylindrical hollow member. The axes of each of the rows of holes are in planes parallel to each other.
- each of the lock cylinders is provided with a closed key slot profile for inserting a key.
- two rows of holes defining passages are configured on each of the lock cylinders, wherein the axes of each of the rows of holes are in planes parallel to each other.
- the arrestor means comprises two rows of locking elements.
- each of the locking elements comprises a spring, a pressure pin, and a lock pin.
- each of the locking elements has locking pins of a pre-determined variable length, and is fitted within passages of the cylinder lock housing and extends into the two rows of passages in each of the lock cylinders.
- the arrestor means is configured to be displaced between a locking operative configuration and an unlocking operative configuration.
- the displacement between locking operative configuration and an unlocking operative configuration is done by the key, having means to displace each of the lock pin projecting into the closed key slot profile to prevent and allow angular displacement of the lock cylinders with reference to the cylinder lock housing.
- the closed key slot profile configured on the lock cylinder has a profile selected from a group consisting of rectangular, square, and any polygonal shape.
- the two rows of holes configured on each of the lock cylinders is configured to extend to the closed key slot profile for facilitating insertion of the key.
- the lock cylinders have a means adapted to align the rows of parallel passages relative to each other in an assembled operative configuration of the mortise lock assembly.
- the mortise lock assembly further comprises an angularly displaceable crank assembly.
- the crank assembly is fitted in the central slot of the cylinder lock housing, and is configured to be angularly displaced under the influence of the key.

- Fig. 8B illustrates a front view of the key of the mortise lock assembly, of Fig. 8A.
- Fig. 8C illustrates a perspective view of the key of the mortise lock assembly, of Fig. 8A.
- the present disclosure envisages a mortise lock assembly with a closed key slot profile, which facilitates different key combinations. Further, the mortise lock assembly provides secured locking.
- the closed key slot is located in the center of cylinder. It is surrounded by metal on all sides as there is no open slot in cylinder. This makes the cylinder stronger as it has no open slot.
- the Key is located in the center of cylinder hence it does not touch inside wall of lock housing. There is no friction between the key & inside surface of lock housing. This results in very smooth rotation of key. The gap between cylinder & hole of lock housing does not affect the working of lock assembly.
- the mortise lock assembly of the present disclosure, is hereinafter described with reference to Fig.lA to Fig. 8C.
- the mortise lock operable with a key is generally indicated by reference numeral 100.
- Fig. 1A illustrates an isometric view of a conventional cylinder with open profiled key slot and single axis pin arrangement
- Fig. IB illustrates an isometric view of a conventional cylinder with open key slot and multi axes pin arrangement.
- key entry slot is open from the outer diameter of the cylinder as shown in Fig 1C & ID.
- a profiled key slot cylinder lock with single axis pin cylinder shown in Fig.lA is easy to manufacture and assemble, but is configured to provide fewer key combinations.
- the profiled key slot cylinder lock with multi axes pin cylinder shown in Fig. IB provides good secured locking, however it is cumbersome task to manufacture and assemble.
- the mortise lock assembly with a closed key slot profile 100 (hereinafter referred as“mortise lock assembly 100”) is operable with a key 30.

- the central slot 26 is configured between the spaced apart two cylindrical members 20A and 20B.
- two rows of holes 28 are configured on the profiled cylinder lock housing 20.
- the two rows of holes define parallel passages in the connecting member 24 which are configured to extend to the annular spaces 22 of the cylindrical hollow members 20A and 20B.

- the lock cylinders 10A and 10B are fitted within the cylindrical hollow members 20 A & 20B.
- Each of the lock cylinders is provided with the closed key slot profile 12 for inserting the key.
- the key slot profile for insertion of the key is closed section, whereas the conventional key slot profile for insertion of the key is open cross section as shown in Fig. 1C & ID.
