Abstract
본 발명은 이차전지의 활성화 방법에 관한 것으로, 양극 활물질을 포함하는 양극, 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극, 상기 양극 및 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막 및 전해질을 포함하는 이차전지를 상온에서 숙성시키는 프리-에이징(Pre-aging) 단계(S100); 상기 프리-에이징된 이차전지를 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 60% 이상으로 1차 충전하는 충전 단계(S200); 상기 1차 충전된 이차전지를 고온에서 에이징하는 고온 에이징 단계(S300); 및 상기 고온 에이징된 이차전지를 상온에서 에이징하는 상온 에이징 단계(S400); 를 포함하고, 상기 고온 에이징 단계는 60℃ 이상의 온도에서 수행되는 것을 특징으로 한다. 본 발명의 활성화 방법은, 1차 충전에 의해 음극 SEI 피막을 균일하고 안정하게 형성시키고, 고온 에이징을 통해 SEI 피막 안정화를 가속화 함으로써 양품의 전압 강하량을 감소시키고 산포를 개선해, 저전압 불량의 검출력을 향상시킨 효과가 있다.
Description
본 출원은 2019.01.03.자 한국 특허출원 제10-2019-0000507호에 기초한 우선권의 이익을 주장하며, 해당 한국 특허 출원의 문헌에 개시된 모든 내용은 본 명세서의 일부로서 포함된다.
본 발명은 이차전지의 활성화 방법에 관한 것으로, 보다 구체적으로는 저전압 불량의 검출 시, 양품의 전압 강하량은 감소시키면서 불량품의 전압 강하량은 증가시켜, 저전압 불량의 검출력을 향상시킨 이차전지의 활성화 방법에 관한 것이다.
일반적으로 이차전지는 충전이 불가능한 일차전지와 달리, 충방전이 가능한 전지를 의미하여, 휴대폰, 노트북 컴퓨터, 캠코더 등의 전자기기 또는 전기 자동차 등에 널리 사용되고 있다. 특히 리튬 이차전지는 니켈-카드뮴 전지 또는 니켈-수조 전지보다 큰 용량을 가지며, 단위 중량당 에너지 밀도가 높기 때문에, 그 활용 정도가 급속도로 증가되는 추세에 있다.
이러한 리튬 이차전지는 주로 리튬계 산화물과 탄소재를 각각 양극 활물질과 음극 활물질로 사용한다. 리튬 이차전지는 이러한 양극 활물질과 음극 활물질이 각각 도포된 양극판과 음극판이 분리막을 사이에 두고 배치된 전극조립체와, 전극조립체를 전해액과 함께 밀봉 수납하는 외장재를 구비한다.
한편, 리튬 이차전지는 전지 케이스의 형상에 따라, 전극조립체가 금속 캔에 내장되어 있는 캔형 이차전지와 전극조립체가 알루미늄 라미네이트 시트의 파우치에 내장되어 있는 파우치형 이차전지로 분류될 수 있다.
이차전지는 일반적으로 전극조립체가 전지 케이스에 수납된 상태에서 액체 상태의 전해질, 즉 전해액이 주입되고, 전지 케이스가 실링되는 과정을 통해 제조된다.
이러한 리튬 이차전지는, 제조 공정 또는 사용 중에 다양한 원인에 의해 다양한 형태의 불량이 발생활 수 있다. 특히, 제조가 완료된 이차전지 중 일부는, 자가방전율 이상의 전압 강하 거동을 나타내는 현상을 보이기도 하는데, 이러한 현상을 저전압이라 한다.
이러한 이차전지의 저전압 불량 현상은, 대표적으로 내부에 위치한 금속 이물에 기인한 경우가 많다. 특히 이차전지의 양극판에 철이나 구리와 같은 금속 이물이 존재할 경우, 이러한 금속 이물은 음극에서 덴드라이트(Dendrite)로 성장할 수 있다. 그리고 이와 같은 덴드라이트는 이차전지의 내부 단락을 일으켜, 이차전지의 고장이나 손상, 심한 경우에는 발화의 원인이 될 수 있다.
한편, 위와 같은 금속 기인성 저전압 불량은 상대적인 전압 강하량 증가로 나타나며, 이차전지의 활성화 공정 중 에이징 공정을 통해 저전압 불량을 검출하고 있다.
도 1은 종래의 활성화 공정의 단계별 공정 조건을 나타낸 모식도로서, 이를 참조하면, 종래에는 프리-에이징된 전지를 SOC 10~40%의 범위로 1차 충전하고, 1차 충전된 이차전지를 고온 에이징하고, 고온 에이징된 이차전지를 2차 충전한 후, 상온 에이징을 수행하는 방식으로 활성화 공정을 수행하였다. 그리고 상기 상온 에이징 공정 중 선택된 2개의 시점에서 각각 OCV를 측정하여 OCV의 변화값(전압 강하량)과 기준값을 비교하여, 상기 전압 강하량이 기준값 미만인 전지를 양품으로 판정하는 방식으로 저전압 불량을 선별하여 왔다.
그러나 상기한 방법은 양품의 전압 강하량과 불량품의 전압 강하량이 동일한 수준으로 나타나는 영역이 있어, 정확한 저전압 불량 선별이 어려웠다. 따라서, 저전압 불량 검출력을 향상시키기 위해서는 양품의 전압 강하량은 감소시키고, 불량품의 전압 강하량은 증가시키는 기술이 필요하다.
본 발명은 상기의 문제점을 해결하기 위한 것으로, 양품의 전압 강하량을 감소시켜 산포를 개선하고, 불량품의 전압 강하량을 증가시킴으로써, 저전압 불량의 검출력을 현저하게 향상시키는 이차전지의 활성화 방법을 제공하기 위한 것이다.
본 발명의 다른 목적 및 장점들은 하기의 설명에 의해서 이해될 수 있으며, 본 발명의 실시예에 의해 보다 분명하게 알게 될 것이다. 또한 본 발명의 목적 및 장점들은 특허청구범위에 나타낸 수단 및 그 조합에 의해 실현될 수 있음을 쉽게 할 수 있을 것이다.
상기와 같은 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명에 따른 이차전지의 활성화 방법은, 양극 활물질을 포함하는 양극, 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극, 상기 양극 및 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막 및 전해질을 포함하는 이차전지를 상온에서 숙성시키는 프리-에이징(Pre-aging) 단계(S100); 상기 프리-에이징된 이차전지를 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 60% 이상으로 1차 충전하는 충전 단계(S200); 상기 1차 충전된 이차전지를 고온에서 에이징하는 고온 에이징 단계(S300); 및 상기 고온 에이징된 이차전지를 상온에서 에이징하는 상온 에이징 단계(S400); 를 포함하고, 상기 고온 에이징 단계(S300)는 60℃ 이상의 온도에서 수행되는 것을 특징으로 한다.
여기서, 상기 충전 단계(S200)는, 3.0 내지 4.0V의 충전 전압, 1.0C 이하의 씨레이트(C-rate)로 충전하는 것일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 충전 단계는, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 10%까지의 제 1 충전 구간, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 40%까지의 제 2 충전 구간 및 그 이후 구간인 제 3 충전 구간으로 이루어지고, 상기 제 2 충전 구간에서는 0.5C 이하의 씨레이트로 충전이 수행되는 것일 수 있다.
이때, 상기 제 2 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트는, 상기 제 1 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트 및 상기 제 3 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트 보다 높을 수 있고, 상기 제 1 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트와 상기 제 3 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트의 비는 2:3 내지 3:2일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 고온 에이징 단계(S300)는 18시간 내지 36시간, 더욱 바람직하게는 21시간 내지 24시간일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 충전 단계(S200)는, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 65% 내지 75% 충전하는 것일 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 활성화 방법은, 상기 상온 에이징 단계(S400)에서, 이차전지를 에이징하면서 전압값의 변화를 측정해 전압 강하량으로부터 저전압 불량의 이차전지를 선별하는 것을 포함한다.
이때, 상기 전압값의 변화를 측정하는 것은, 상온 에이징의 시작점에서 전압값(V1)을 측정하고, 상온 에이징의 종료점에서 전압값(V2)을 측정하여, 시작점과 종료점의 전압값의 차이인 전압 강하량(V1-V2)이 기준값 범위를 만족하는지를 판단하는 것이다.
본 발명의 활성화 방법은, 상기 상온 에이징 단계(S400) 이후에 이차전지를 0.1 내지 2.0C의 씨레이트로 충전하는 2차 충전 단계를 더 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 활성화 방법은 양품의 전압 강하량의 평균값이 10mV 이하이다.
본 발명의 활성화 방법은 전압 강하량의 표준편차가 0.5mV 이하이다.
또한 본 발명은, 양극 활물질을 포함하는 양극, 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극, 상기 양극 및 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막 및 전해질을 전지 케이스에 수납하여 이차전지를 조립하는 조립 유닛; 상기 조립 유닛에 의해 조립된 이차전지를 프리-에이징하는 프리-에이징 유닛; 상기 프리-에이징된 이차전지를 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 60% 이상으로 1차 충전하는 충전 유닛; 상기 1차 충전된 이차전지를 60℃ 이상의 온도로 에이징하는 고온 에이징 유닛; 상기 고온 에이징된 이차전지를 상온에서 에이징하는 상온 에이징 유닛; 및 상기 이차전지의 저전압 불량을 검출하는 검출 유닛;을 포함하는 이차전지의 저전압 불량 검사 장치를 제공한다.
상기 충전 유닛은, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 10%까지의 제 1 충전 구간, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 40%까지의 제 2 충전 구간 및 그 이후 구간인 제 3 충전 구간으로 나누어 이차전지를 충전하되, 상기 제 2 충전 구간에서는 0.5C 이하의 씨레이트로 충전하는 것일 수 있다.
본 발명의 활성화 방법은, 1차 충전에 의해 음극 SEI 피막을 균일하고 안정하게 형성시키고, 고온 에이징을 통해 SEI 피막 안정화를 가속화 함으로써 양품의 전압 강하량을 감소시키고 산포를 개선해, 저전압 불량의 검출력을 향상시킨 효과가 있다.
따라서, 본 발명의 이러한 측면들에 의하면, 저전압 불량이 발생할 가능성이 높은 이차전지를 조기에 검출하여 불량 이차전지가 유통 내지 사용되는 것을 방지할 수 있고, 이차전지의 사용 중에 이차전지의 고장이나 손상, 발화 등이 발생하는 문제를 예방할 수 있다.

따라서, 본 명세서에 기재된 실시예와 도면에 도시된 구성은 본 발명의 가장 바람직한 일 실시예에 불과할 뿐이고, 본 발명의 기술적 사상을 모두 대변하는 것은 아니므로, 본 출원시점에 있어서 이들을 대체할 수 있는 다양한 균등물과 변형예들이 있을 수 있음을 이해하여야 한다.
도 2는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 활성화 방법의 단계별 공정 조건이 개략적으로 도시되어 있는데, 이를 참조하면, 본 발명의 이차전지의 활성화 방법은, 양극 활물질을 포함하는 양극, 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극, 상기 양극 및 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막 및 전해질을 포함하는 이차전지를 상온에서 숙성시키는 프리-에이징(Pre-aging) 단계(S100); 상기 프리-에이징된 이차전지를 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 60% 이상으로 1차 충전하는 충전 단계(S200); 상기 1차 충전된 이차전지를 고온에서 에이징하는 고온 에이징 단계(S300); 및 상기 고온 에이징된 이차전지를 상온에서 에이징하는 상온 에이징 단계(S400); 를 포함하고, 상기 고온 에이징 단계는 60℃ 이상의 온도에서 수행되는 것을 특징으로 한다.
먼저, 프리-에이징 단계에서, 전극 활물질 및 바인더를 포함하는 전극 합제를 전극 집전체에 도포하여 각각 양극 및 음극을 제조한 다음, 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 분리막을 개재하여 전극조립체를 준비한다.

상기 전지 케이스는 전지의 포장을 위한 외장재로 사용되는 것이라면 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 원통형, 각형 또는 파우치형이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 전해액은 유기 용매 및 리튬염을 포함하고, 선택적으로 첨가제를 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 유기 용매는 전지의 충방전 과정에서 산화 반응 등에 의한 분해가 최소화될 수 있는 것이라면 제한이 없고, 예를 들어 환형 카보네이트, 선형 카보네이트, 에스테르, 에테르 또는 케톤 등일 수 있다. 이들은 단독으로 사용될 수 있고, 2종 이상이 혼용되어 사용될 수 있다.
상기 유기 용매들 중 특히 카보네이트계 유기 용매가 바람직하게 사용될 수 있는데, 환형 카보네이트로는 에틸렌 카보네이트(EC), 프로필렌카보네이트(PC) 및 부틸렌 카보네이트(BC)를 들 수 있고, 선형 카보네이트로는 디메틸카보네이트(DMC), 디에틸 카보네이트(DEC), 디프로필 카보네이트(DPC), 에틸메틸카보네이트(EMC), 메틸프로필카보네이트(MPC) 및 에틸프로필 카보네이트(EPC)가 대표적이다.

4 등 리튬 이차 전지의 전해액에 통상적으로 사용되는 리튬염이 제한 없이 사용될 수 있으며, 이들은 단독으로 사용될 수 있고, 2종 이상이 혼용되어 사용될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 전해액에는 선택적으로 첨가제가 더 포함될 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 상기 첨가제로는 SEI 막을 안정적으로 형성하기 위하여, 비닐렌 카보네이트, 비닐에틸렌 카보네이트, 플루오로에틸렌 카보네이트, 환형 설파이트, 포화 설톤, 불포화 설톤, 비환형 설폰, 리튬옥살릴디플루오로보레이트(LiODFB), 및 이들의 유도체로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 어느 하나 또는 이들 중 2종 이상의 혼합물이 사용될 수 있으나, 여기에 한정되지는 않는다.
상기 환형 설파이트로는 에틸렌 설파이트, 메틸 에틸렌 설파이트, 에틸 에틸렌 설파이트, 4,5-디메틸 에틸렌 설파이트, 4,5-디에틸 에틸렌 설파이트, 프로필렌 설파이트, 4,5-디메틸 프로필렌 설파이트, 4,5-디에틸 프로필렌 설파이트, 4,6-디메틸 프로필렌 설파이트, 4,6-디에틸 프로필렌 설파이트, 1,3-부틸렌 글리콜 설파이트 등을 들 수 있으며, 포화 설톤으로는 1,3-프로판 설톤, 1,4-부탄 설톤 등을 들 수 있으며, 불포화 설톤으로는 에텐 설톤, 1,3-프로펜 설톤, 1,4-부텐 설톤, 1-메틸-1,3-프로펜 설톤 등을 들 수 있으며, 비환형 설폰으로는 디비닐 설폰, 디메틸 설폰, 디에틸 설폰, 메틸에틸 설폰, 메틸비닐 설폰 등을 들 수 있다.
이러한 첨가제들은 음극에 견고한 SEI 피막을 형성함으로써 저온 출력 특성을 개선시킴은 물론, 고온 사이클 작동 시 발생할 수 있는 양극 표면의 분해를 억제하고 전해액의 산화 반응을 방지하기 위하여 상기 전해액에 첨가된다.
상기 전지 케이스가 파우치형인 경우에, 알루미늄 층을 포함하는 알루미늄 적층 파우치가 사용될 수 있다. 상기 전해액을 주입한 이후에, 상기 알루미늄 적층 파우치의 개봉된 부분을 열용접 또는 열융착함으로써 밀봉할 수 있다.
상기 프리-에이징 단계(S100)에서 주입된 전해액에 의한 전지의 함침(Wetting)이 수행된다.
보다 구체적으로, 이차전지는 충전 시 전자들이 도선을 타고 음극으로 이동하여 대전되면, 전하 중성(charge neutrality)을 이루기 위해 리튬 이온들이 음극에 흡장(intercalation)된다. 이 때, 리튬 이온은 전해액이 함침된 부위, 즉, 이온의 이동 경로가 유지되는 부위(wetting area)에서는 흡장이 가능하지만, 전해액 비함침 부위(non-wetting area)에서는 흡장이 상대적으로 어려워진다.
따라서, 프리-에이징하는 단계를 통하여 전해액이 상기 양극 및 음극에 잘 스며들 수 있도록 전지를 상온, 상압 조건에서 0.5 내지 72 시간 동안 숙성시킬 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 프리-에이징하는 단계는 20℃ 내지 30℃, 상세하게는 22℃ 내지 28℃, 더 상세하게는 23℃ 내지 27℃, 더욱더 상세하게는 25℃ 내지 27℃에서 실시될 수 있다.
다음으로, 상기 프리-에이징된 이차전지를 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 60% 이상으로 1차 충전하는 충전 단계(S200)가 수행된다.
상기 충전 단계(S200)는, SEI(고체 전해질 계면, Solid electrolyte interface, 이하 "SEI"라고 지칭함) 피막층을 형성하는 단계로, 본 발명에서는 1차 충전 시, 전지의 충전량이 설계 용량(SOC)의 60% 이상으로 충전시키는 것이 특징이다.
양품 이차전지의 전압 강하량을 감소시켜 산포를 개선시키기 위해서는, 음극의 SEI 피막을 균하고 안정하게 형성시켜야 하는데, 이는 음극의 부피가 최대로 팽창하여야 달성될 수 있다. 본 발명의 발명자들은 1차 충전 시, SOC 60% 이상으로 충전을 수행할 경우 SEI 피막이 최대한 균일하게 형성되어 양품의 전압 강하량이 감소되는 것을 발견하고 본 발명에 이르게 되었다.
따라서, 1차 충전 시, SOC 60% 미만으로 충전을 수행하게 되면 본 발명의 목적 달성이 어려울 수 있어 바람직하지 않다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에서, 상기 충전 단계의 충전량은 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 65% 내지 75% 충전하는 것이 바람직하다.
상기 충전 단계(S200)에서의 충전 조건은 당업계에 공지된 조건에 따라 충전이 수행될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에서, 상기 충전 단계(S200)는, 3.0 내지 4.0V의 충전 전압, 1.0C 이하의 씨레이트(C-rate)로 충전이 수행될 수 있다. 다만, 이러한 충전 전압의 경우, 이차전지의 종류나 특성에 따라 달라질 수 있다.
본 발명의 다른 실시양태에서는, 상기 충전 단계(S200)가 1단계 공정이 아닌 3단계 공정을 가질 수도 있다. 즉, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 10%까지의 제 1 충전 구간, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 40%까지의 제 2 충전 구간 및 그 이후 구간의 제 3 충전 구간으로 이루어지고, 상기 3 개의 구간별로 충전 조건이 다르게 설정되어 충전이 이루어질 수 있다. 이때, 상기 제 2 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트는 0.5C 이하인 것이 바람직하다.
본 발명의 바람직한 일 실시예에서, 상기 제 2 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트는, 상기 제 1 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트 및 상기 제 3 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트 보다 높은 것이 바람직하다. 이때, 상기 제 1 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트와 상기 제 3 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트의 비는 2:3 내지 3:2인 것이 더욱 바람직하다.
예를 들어, 상기 충전 단계(S200)는, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 10%까지는 0.2C의 씨레이트, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 40%까지는 0.25C의 씨레이트, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 65%까지는 0.2C의 씨레이트로 충전될 수 있다.
또한, 상기 충전 단계(S200)는 20℃ 내지 30℃, 상세하게는 22℃ 내지 28℃, 더 상세하게는 23℃ 내지 27℃, 더욱더 상세하게는 25℃ 내지 27℃에서 실시될 수 있다.
이후, 상기 충전된 전지를 60℃ 이상의 고온 환경에서 에이징하는 고온 에이징 단계(S300)가 수행된다.
상기 고온 에이징 단계(S300)는 앞서 충전 단계에서 형성된 SEI 피막을 안정화시키는 단계로, 고온 에이징을 통해 SEI 피막의 안정화가 더욱 가속화되어 후술하는 불량 검사 에이징 구간에서 양품의 전압 강하량을 감소시킬 수 있다.
특히, 본 발명에서는 이러한 고온 에이징하는 단계를 고온인 60℃ 이상, 바람직하게는 65℃ 내지 75℃에서 실시하여 양품의 SEI 피막 안정화를 가속화시켜 양품의 자가 방전량을 감소시켜 저전압 검출을 향상시키는 효과를 갖게 된다. 상기 고온 에이징은 60℃ 미만의 온도에서 수행하게 되면 본 발명의 목적 달성이 어렵고, 온도가 너무 높을 경우에는 전지 성능, 예컨대 용량 및 수명이 저하되는 문제가 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에서, 상기 고온 에이징 단계는 18 시간 내지 36시간, 더욱 바람직하게는 21시간 내지 24시간 수행될 수 있다. 고온 에이징 시간이 18시간 미만일 경우에는 SEI 피막의 안정화가 충분치 않아 본 발명의 목적 달성이 어려울 수 있고, 고온 에이징 시간이 36시간을 초과할 경우에는 에이징 시간이 장기화되어 생산성 측면에서 바람직하지 않다.
또한 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 이차전지의 활성화 방법은, 상기 고온 에이징 단계(S300) 후에, 이차전지를 가압하는 가압 단계를 더 포함할 수 있다. 상기 가압 단계는 부반응 가스 등에 의해 이차전지의 두께가 팽창되므로, 이차전지의 두께 팽창을 개선하는 단계이다. 상기 가압 단계는 650 내지 850 kgf로 4 내지 6초 동안 수행될 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니며, 경우에 따라 상기 가압하는 단계가 생략될 수 있다.
이후, 상기 고온 에이징된 이차전지를 상온에서 에이징하는 상온 에이징 단계(S400)가 수행된다. 상기 상온 에이징 단계는 20℃ 내지 30℃, 상세하게는 22℃ 내지 28℃, 더 상세하게는 23℃ 내지 27℃, 더욱더 상세하게는 25℃ 내지 27℃에서 실시될 수 있다.
상기 상온 에이징 단계(S400)는, 이차전지를 에이징하면서 전압값의 변화를 측정하는 것이 포함될 수 있다. 이는 서로 다른 복수 시점에서 측정된 개방 회로 전압(OCV)를 이용하여 이차전지의 저전압 불량 여부를 판단하는 형태로 구성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 고온 에이징된 이차전지를 상온에서 보관하되, 적어도 두 시점에서 OCV를 측정하고, 각 OCV 사이의 차이값을 메모리부 등에 미리 저장되어 있는 기준값과 비교함으로써, 이차전지의 저전압 불량 여부를 선별할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일실시예서, 이차전지의 저전압 불량 여부의 선별은, 상온 에이징의 시작점에서 전압값(V1)을 측정하고, 상온 에이징의 종료점에서 전압값(V2)을 측정하여, 시작점과 종료점의 전압값의 차이인 전압 강하량(V1-V2)이 기준값 범위를 만족하는지를 판단하는 것을 내용으로 한다.
보다 구체적으로 검사 대상이 되는 이차전지의 전압 강하량 측정값이 20mV이고, 양품의 전압 강하량의 기준값이 10mV인 경우, 측정된 전압 강하량이 상기 기준값보다 크므로, 이러한 이차전지는 저전압 불량으로 판단할 수 있다.
본 발명의 활성화 방법은, 상기 상온 에이징 단계(S400) 이후에 이차전지를 0.1 내지 2.0C의 씨레이트로 충전하는 2차 충전 단계를 더 포함할 수 있다.
또한 본 발명의 활성화 방법은, 상기 충전 단계 및 상기 고온 에이징 단계에 의해 이차전지 내부에서 생성된 부반응 가스가 전지의 스웰링 현상을 야기할 수 있으므로, 이 같은 부반응 가스를 제거하기 위한 디개싱(Degassing) 공정을 추가로 포함할 수 있다.
이러한 디개싱 공정은, 본원발명의 출원 시점에 공지된 다양한 디개싱 기술이 채용될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 디개싱 공정은 일측이 길게 연장 형성된 파우치형 이차 전지에서, 연장 형성된 부분을 절개하고 절개된 부분을 실링하는 방식으로 디개싱 공정이 수행될 수 있다. 다만, 이러한 디개싱 기술에 대해서는 당업자들에게 널리 알려져 있으므로, 보다 상세한 설명을 생략한다.
위와 같은 본 발명의 활성화 방법은, 양품의 전압 강하량의 평균값이 10mV 이하이고, 양품의 전압 강하량의 편차가 0.5mV 이하로써, 양품의 전압 강하량의 평균값 및 편차가 작아 저전압 검출력이 향상되는 효과가 있다.
또한, 본 발명은 양극 활물질을 포함하는 양극, 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극, 상기 양극 및 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막 및 전해질을 전지 케이스에 수납하여 이차전지를 조립하는 조립 유닛; 상기 조립 유닛에 의해 조립된 이차전지를 프리-에이징하는 프리-에이징 유닛; 상기 프리-에이징된 이차전지를 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 60% 이상으로 1차 충전하는 충전 유닛; 상기 1차 충전된 이차전지를 60℃ 이상의 온도로 에이징하는 고온 에이징 유닛; 상기 고온 에이징된 이차전지를 상온에서 에이징하는 상온 에이징 유닛; 및 상기 이차전지의 저전압 불량을 검출하는 검출 유닛; 을 포함하는 이차전지의 저전압 불량 검사 장치를 제공한다. 상기 이차전지의 저전압 불량 검사 장치는, 앞서 설명된 이차전지의 활성화 공정을 수행할 수 있다.
상기 조립 유닛은, 이차전지를 조립할 수 있다. 여기서, 이차전지는, 전극 조립체와 전해액을 구비할 수 있다. 그리고, 이러한 전극조립체는 전해액과 함께, 전지 케이스에 수납될 수 있다. 또한, 전지 케이스는 전극조립체와 전해액이 수납된 형태로 실링될 수 있다.
상기 조립 유닛은, 양극판, 음극판 및 분리막을 적층시키는 전극조립체 적층부, 전지 케이스 내부로 전해액을 주입하는 전해액 주입부, 전지 케이스를 열융착시켜 밀봉하는 열융착부 등을 구비하도록 구성될 수 있다. 이러한 이차 전지를 조립하는 구성은, 본원발명의 출원 시점에 공지된 다양한 전지 조립 기술이 채용될 수 있으며, 이에 대한 상세한 설명은 생략한다.
상기 프리-에이징 유닛은, 상기 조립 유닛에 의해 조립된 이차전지를 에이징할 수 있다. 특히 상기 프리-에이징 유닛은 프리 에이징 단계(S100)를 수행하도록 구성될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 전해액이 상기 양극 및 음극에 잘 스며들 수 있도록 전지를 상온, 상압 조건에서 0.5 내지 72 시간 동안 숙성시킬 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 프리-에이징하는 단계는 20℃ 내지 30℃, 상세하게는 22℃ 내지 28℃, 더 상세하게는 23℃ 내지 27℃, 더욱더 상세하게는 25℃ 내지 27℃에서 이차전지를 보관하도록 구성될 수 있다. 이와 같은 구성을 위하여, 상기 프리-에이징 유닛은, 내부에 빈 공간을 갖고 내부 온도가 일정 범위 내로 유지 가능한 챔버를 구비할 수 있다.
상기 충전 유닛은, 상기 프리-에이징 유닛에 의해 프리-에이징된 이차 전지를 충전할 수 있다. 특히, 상기 충전 유닛은, 상기 충전 단계(S200)를 수행하도록 구성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 충전 유닛은, 충전량이 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 60% 이상으로 이차전지를 충전하도록 구성될 수 있다. 또한, 상기 충전 유닛은 1.0C 이하의 씨레이트로 이차전지를 충전하도록 구성될 수 있다.
이러한 구성을 위해, 상기 충전 유닛은, 이차 전지로 공급하기 위한 전원을 생성하는 전원 생성부 및 이차 전지의 전극 리드에 접촉하여 전원 생성부로부터 공급되는 전원을 이차 전지에 전달하는 접속 단자 등을 구비할 수 있다.
특히 상기 충전 유닛은, 상기 충전 단계(S200)에서, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 10%까지의 제 1 충전 구간, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 40%까지의 제 2 충전 구간 및 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 65%까지의 제 3 충전 구간으로 나누어 이차전지의 충전 공정을 수행하되, 상기 제 2 충전 구간에서는 0.5C 이하의 씨레이트로 충전할 수 있도록 구성될 수 있다.
상기 고온 에이징 유닛은, 상기 충전 유닛에 의해 1차 충전된 이차전지를 60℃ 이상의 온도로 에이징할 수 있다. 특히 상기 고온 에이징 유닛은 1차 충전에 의해 형성된 SEI 피막의 안정화를 가속화시키는 상기 고온 에이징 단계(S300)를 수행하도록 구성될 수 있다. 이와 같은 구성을 위하여, 상기 고온 에이징 유닛은, 내부에 빈 공간을 갖고 내부 온도가 일정 범위 내로 유지 가능한 챔버, 챔버 내부의 온도를 센싱하는 온도 센싱부, 챔버 내부의 온도를 조절하는 온도 제어부, 챔버 내부의 온도를 상승시키는 가열부 및 챔버 내부의 온도를 하강시킬 수 있는 냉각부를 구비할 수 있다.
상기 상온 에이징 유닛은, 상기 고온 에이징 유닛에 의해 에이징된 이차전지를 상온 에이징할 수 있다. 특히 상기 상온 에이징 유닛은, 상기 상온 에이징 단계(S400)를 수행하도록 구성될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 전지를 상온, 상압 조건에서 0.5 내지 72 시간 동안 숙성시킬 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 프리-에이징하는 단계는 20℃ 내지 30℃, 상세하게는 22℃ 내지 28℃, 더 상세하게는 23℃ 내지 27℃, 더욱더 상세하게는 25℃ 내지 27℃에서 이차전지를 보관하도록 구성될 수 있다. 이와 같은 구성을 위하여, 상기 프리-에이징 유닛은, 내부에 빈 공간을 갖고 내부 온도가 일정 범위 내로 유지 가능한 챔버를 구비할 수 있다.
상기 검출 유닛은, 1차 충전 및 고온 에이징을 완료한 이차전지에 대하여, 불량을 검출할 수 있다. 특히, 상기 검출 유닛은, 상기 상온 에이징 단계(S400)에서 수행하는 저전압 불량 검출을 수행하도록 구성될 수 있다.
특히, 상기 검출 유닛은, 이차 전지에 대하여, 서로 다른 시점에서 측정된 둘 이상의 OCV값의 차(전압 강하량)를 기준값과 비교함으로써, 이차 전지의 불량 여부를 판단할 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명에 따른 이차전지의 저전압 불량 검사 장치는, 2차 충전 유닛을 더 포함할 수 있다.
한편, 본 발명에 따른 이차전지의 저전압 불량 검사 장치의 구성 요소 중, 적어도 일부는, 하나의 공통된 구성요소일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 프리-에이징 유닛 및 상온 에이징 유닛은, 하나의 공통된 구성요소로 구현될 수 있다. 즉, 하나의 에이징 유닛이 프리-에이징 유닛 및 상온 에이징 유닛으로 기능하도록 구성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 구성에 의하면, 양품의 전압 강하량 및 표준편차가 감소하여, 이차전지 저전압 불량 검출력이 향상될 수 있다.
이하 본 발명의 이해를 돕기 위하여 실시예를 들어 상세하게 설명하기로 한다. 그러나 본 발명에 따른 실시예들은 여러 가지 다른 형태로 변형될 수 있으며, 본 발명의 범위가 하기 실시예에 한정되는 것으로 해석되어서는 안 된다. 본 발명의 실시예들은 당업계에서 평균적인 지식을 가진 자에게 본 발명을 보다 완전하게 설명하기 위해 제공되는 것이다.
제조예 1- 이물 미투입 이차전지(정상 이차전지)의 제조
양극 활물질로서 기능하는 Li[Ni
0.6Mn
0.2Co
0.2]O
2 96.7중량부, 도전재로서 기능하는 그래파이트를 1.3중량부, 결합제로서 기능하는 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드(PVdF)를 2.0중량부 혼합해서, 양극 합제를 제조했다. 얻어진 양극 합제를 용매로서 기능하는 1-메틸-2-피롤리돈에 분산시키는 것에 의해, 양극 합제 슬러리를 조제했다. 이 슬러리를 두께 20 ㎛의 알루미늄 호일의 양면에 각각 코팅, 건조, 및 압착하여 양극을 제조하였다.
음극 활물질로서 기능하는 인조흑연과 천연흑연(중량비: 90:10)를 97.6중량부, 결합제로서 기능하는 스티렌-부타디엔 고무(SBR)를 1.2중량부, 카르복시메틸 셀룰로스(CMC)를 1.2중량부 혼합해서, 음극 합제를 조제했다. 이 음극 합제를 용매로서 기능하는 이온 교환수에 분산시키는 것에 의해, 음극 합제 슬러리를 제조했다. 이 슬러리를 두께 20 ㎛의 구리 호일의 양면에 코팅, 건조 및 압착하여 음극을 제조하였다.
에틸렌 카보네이트(EC), 프로필렌카보네이트(PC) 및 디에틸 카보네이트(DEC)를 3:3:4(부피비)의 조성으로 혼합된 유기 용매에 LiPF
6를 1.0M의 농도가 되도록 용해시켜 비수성 전해액을 제조하였다.
상기에서 제조된 양극과 음극 사이에 다공성 폴리에틸렌의 세퍼레이터가 개재되도록 적층하고 이를 파우치에 수납한 후, 상기 전해액을 주입하여 리튬 이차전지를 제조하였다.
실시예 1
제조예 1의 이차전지를 20개 준비하고, 25℃의 상온에서
24시간 숙성시켜 프리-에이징하고, 프리-에이징된 이차전지를 SOC 65% 구간까지 0.2C의 씨레이트로 충전하여 1차 충전을 완료하였다(단일 충전 방식). 이후 65℃의 온도에서 21시간 고온 에이징을 수행하고, 25℃의 상온에서 상온 에이징을 수행하였다.
실시예 2
상기 실시예 1에서 1차 충전 시, SOC 10%까지의 제 1 충전 구간에서는 0.2C의 씨레이트로, 이후부터 SOC 40%까지의 제 2 충전 구간에서는 0.25C의 씨레이트로, 그 이후부터 SOC 65%까지의 제 3 충전 구간에서는 0.2C의 씨레이트로 충전(3단계 충전)한 것을 제외하고는, 동일한 방법으로 활성화 공정을 수행하였다.
실시예 3
상기 실시예 2에서 1차 충전 시, 제 2 충전 구간의 충전 씨레이트를 0.5C로 변경한 것을 제외하고는 상기 실시예 2와 동일한 방법으로 활성화 공정을 수행하였다.
실시예 4
상기 실시예 2에서 1차 충전 시, 제 2 충전 구간의 충전 씨레이트를 0.75C로 변경한 것을 제외하고는 상기 실시예 2와 동일한 방법으로 활성화 공정을 수행하였다.

상기 실시예 2에서 1차 충전 시, 제 2 충전 구간의 충전 씨레이트를 1.0C로 변경한 것을 제외하고는 상기 실시예 2와 동일한 방법으로 활성화 공정을 수행하였다.
실시예 6
상기 실시예 1에서, 고온 에이징 시, 에이징 시간을 24시간으로 변경한 점을 제외하고는 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 활성화 공정을 수행하였다.
실시예 7
상기 실시예 1에서, 고온 에이징 시, 에이징 시간을 18시간으로 변경한 점을 제외하고는 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 활성화 공정을 수행하였다.
비교예 1
제조예 1의 이차전지를 20개 준비하고, 25℃의 상온에서 48시간 숙성시켜 프리-에이징하고, 프리-에이징된 이차전지를 SOC 17%까지 0.2C의 씨레이트로 충전하여 1차 충전을 완료하였다. 이후 이후 65℃의 온도에서 21시간 동안 고온 에이징을 수행하고, SOC 90%까지 0.2C의 씨레이트로 2차 충전을 수행한 후, 25℃의 상온에서 상온 에이징을 수행하였다.
비교예 2
상기 실시예 1에서, 고온 에이징 시, 에이징 시간을 12시간으로 변경한 점을 제외하고는 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 활성화 공정을 수행하였다.
비교예 3
상기 실시예 1에서, 고온 에이징 시, 에이징 시간을 15시간으로 변경한 점을 제외하고는 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 활성화 공정을 수행하였다.
실험예 - 전압 강하량의 측정
상기 실시예 1 내지 7 및 비교예 1 내지 3의 활성화 공정 중, 상온 에이징 을 시작하는 시점에서 이차전지의 OCV와 상온 에이징 시작 후 0.5일 경과 시 이차전지의 OCV를 각각 측정하여 ΔOCV(전압 강하량)을 측정해 그 결과를 도 3 내지 도 5에 나타내고, 실시예 1 내지 5 및 비교예 1의 각 ΔOCV(전압 강하량)의 평균값 및 편차를 계산해 그 결과를 표 1에 나타내었다.

도 3은 실시예 1 내지 5 및 비교예 1에 대한 ΔOCV 분포를 나타내고 있고, 도 4는 도 3을 확대한 그래프이다. 도 3 내지 도 4 및 표 1을 참조하면, 우선 1차 충전 시, 충전량을 SOC 17%로 설정하여 충전하고, 2차 충전을 수행한 비교예 1은, 1차 충전 시, 충전량을 SOC 65%로 설정하여 충전한 실시예 1 내지 5와 비교하여, 전압 강하량의 평균값 및 전압 강하량의 편차가 현저하게 큰 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 비교예 1의 활성화 방법은, 양품의 전압 강하량이 불량품의 전압 강하량 수준과 유사할 수 있어 저전압 검출력이 매우 떨어질 수 밖에 없을 것이다.
또한, 제 2 충전 구간에서 0.5C를 초과하는 씨레이트로 충전한 실시예 4 내지 실시예 5의 각 전압 강하량 및 편차는 비교예 1의 그것보다는 현격하게 작은 것으로 나타났으나, 실시예 2 내지 3의 그것보다는 큰 것으로 나타났는바, 본 발명에 있어서, 제 2 충전 구간의 충전 씨레이트는 0.5C 이하가 바람직한 것으로 생각된다.
한편, 도 5에는 고온 에이징 시간에 따른 각 전압 강하량이 도시되어 있는바, 이를 참조하면, 고온 에이징 시간을 18 내지 24시간으로 수행한 실시예 1, 실시예 6 내지 7의 전압 강하량은, 고온 에이징 시간이 18시간 미만인 비교예 2,3의 전압 강하량보다 작은 수치범위를 나타내고 있고, 편차도 작은 것을 알 수 있다. 특히 고온 에이징 시간이 21시간 내지 24시간인 실시예 1 및 실시예 6이 전압 강하량 및 산포가 우수한 것으로 나타났는바, 본 발명의 활성화 방법은 고온 에이징 시간이 21시간 내지 24시간인 것이 가장 바람직할 것으로 보인다.
위와 같은 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 활성화 방법은 종래의 활성화 방법과 비교하여 양품의 전압 강하량이 작고 산포가 개선되는 결과 저전압 불량의 검출력을 향상시킨 효과가 있다.
이상과 같이, 본 명세서와 도면에는 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 대하여 개시하였으며, 비록 특정 용어들이 사용되었으나, 이는 단지 본 발명의 기술 내용을 쉽게 설명하고 발명의 이해를 돕기 위한 일반적인 의미에서 사용된 것이지, 본 발명의 범위를 한정하고자 하는 것은 아니다. 여기에 개시된 실시예 외에도 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 바탕을 둔 다른 변형 예들이 실시 가능하다는 것은 본 발명이 속하는 기술 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자에게 자명한 것이다.
Claims (15)
- 양극 활물질을 포함하는 양극, 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극, 상기 양극 및 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막 및 전해질을 포함하는 이차전지를 상온에서 숙성시키는 프리-에이징(Pre-aging) 단계(S100);상기 프리-에이징된 이차전지를 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 60% 이상으로 1차 충전하는 충전 단계(S200);상기 1차 충전된 이차전지를 60℃ 이상의 온도에서 에이징하는 고온 에이징 단계(S300); 및상기 고온 에이징된 이차전지를 상온에서 에이징하는 상온 에이징 단계(S400); 를 포함하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 충전 단계(S200)는, 1.0C 이하의 씨레이트(C-rate)로 충전하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 제 2 항에 있어서,상기 충전 단계는, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 10%까지의 제 1 충전 구간, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 40%까지의 제 2 충전 구간 및 그 이후 구간인 제 3 충전 구간으로 이루어지고, 상기 제 2 충전 구간에서는 0.5C 이하의 씨레이트로 충전이 수행되는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 제 3 항에 있어서,상기 제 2 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트는, 상기 제 1 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트 및 상기 제 3 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트 보다 높은 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 제 4 항에 있어서,상기 제 1 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트와 상기 제 3 충전 구간에서의 충전 씨레이트의 비는 2:3 내지 3:2인 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 고온 에이징 단계는 18시간 내지 36시간인 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 제 6 항에 있어서,상기 고온 에이징 단계는 21시간 내지 24시간인 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 충전 단계는, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 65% 내지 75%로 충전하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 상온 에이징 단계에서, 이차전지를 에이징하면서 전압값의 변화를 측정해 전압 강하량으로부터 저전압 불량의 이차전지를 선별하는 것을 포함하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 제 9 항에 있어서,상기 전압값의 변화를 측정하는 것은, 상온 에이징의 시작점에서 전압값(V1)을 측정하고, 상온 에이징의 종료점에서 전압값(V2)을 측정하여, 시작점과 종료점의 전압값의 차이인 전압 강하량(V1-V2)이 기준값 범위를 만족하는지를 판단하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 제 9 항에 있어서,양품의 전압 강하량의 평균값이 10mV 이하인 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 제 9 항에 있어서,양품의 전압 강하량의 편차가 0.5mV 이하인 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 상온 에이징 단계 이후에 이차전지를 0.1 내지 2.0C의 씨레이트로 충전하는 2차 충전 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 활성화 방법.
- 양극 활물질을 포함하는 양극, 음극 활물질을 포함하는 음극, 상기 양극 및 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막 및 전해질을 전지 케이스에 수납하여 이차전지를 조립하는 조립 유닛;상기 조립 유닛에 의해 조립된 이차전지를 프리-에이징하는 프리-에이징 유닛;상기 프리-에이징된 이차전지를 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 60% 이상으로 1차 충전하는 충전 유닛;상기 1차 충전된 이차전지를 60℃ 이상의 온도로 에이징하는 고온 에이징 유닛;상기 고온 에이징된 이차전지를 상온에서 에이징하는 상온 에이징 유닛; 및상기 이차전지의 저전압 불량을 검출하는 검출 유닛;을 포함하는 이차전지의 저전압 불량 검사 장치.
- 제 14 항에 있어서,상기 충전 유닛은, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 10%까지의 제 1 충전 구간, 이차전지 용량(SOC)의 40%까지의 제 2 충전 구간 및 그 이후 구간인 제 3 충전 구간으로 나누어 이차전지를 충전하되, 상기 제 2 충전 구간에서는 0.5C 이하의 씨레이트로 충전하는 것을 특징으로 하는 이차전지의 저전압 불량 검사 장치.
