Definitions

  • the present invention relates generally to the field of circulatory valve repair.
  • the present invention more specifically, relates to an apparatus useful in the field of repairing heart valves for patients suffering from regurgitation.
  • mitral regurgitation has become one of the most frequent heart valve disease.
  • a significant number of patients with mitral or tricuspid regurgitation are often deemed not operable because at higher risk for surgery.
  • such patients can be treated with valve repair procedures that results from "edge-to-edge” surgical techniques.
  • said procedures typically provide for a device that is, preferably percutaneously, introduced and implanted into the patient's body, positioned at the valve to be repaired. Edges (or leaflets) of the valve are grasped and clipped together by said device to significantly reduce (or even cancel) the regurgitation. In this way, it is allowed to repair a valve defect without subjecting the patient to a proper cardiac surgery.
  • MITRACLIP® from Abbot is a device that acts at the mitral leaflets. Although has reported to be safe, it is associated to suboptimal results, both in terms of reducing the degree of mitral regurgitation and increasing the expectation of live and heart related events in terms of hospital readmission/ heart failure. Summary of the Invention
