Definitions
- the present utility model belongs, in general, to the technological sector of bicycles and bicycle accessories and refers, in a more specific way, to a set that, when coupled to the pedals of a bicycle, allows the musculature user's upper arms (arms, shoulders, back, chest, etc.) can be used to assist in propelling the bicycle.
- Said set comprises a rod with means of adjusting the length, which allows adaptation to the anthropometric measurements of the cyclist, designed to transfer the force of the upper musculature to the bicycle pedal, being therefore endowed in its free end with a handle handle and at the other end of means of attachment to the pedal.
- the state of the art of this technological sector comprises conventional bicycles, used both for transportation and for exercises, whose propulsion is carried out exclusively by the pedals, requesting mainly the musculature of the user's feet and legs and restricting the effort of the arms only to hold the handlebar.
- Bicycles with auxiliary drive mechanisms are known, such as the one shown in PI0803318-8 - Supine Bicycle 2x2 traction - which adds a set of gears coupled to a fixed support in front of the bicycle, where the mechanical traction is generated. by the force exerted by the cyclist on the handlebars, aiming at increasing speed and the development of muscles such as trapezius, deltoids, chest, back, biceps, triceps and forearms.
- the inventor is not aware of any set of low-cost accessories that can be simply and practically adapted to a conventional bicycle, allowing users to use the upper musculature to increase the thrust and obtaining, as a secondary benefit, the exercise of the upper musculature while cycling, without having to purchase an exclusive bicycle for that purpose. This possibility of exercising the upper musculature still makes the installation of the proposed set interesting on exercise bikes.
- the present utility model refers to a set of accessories that can be coupled in a simple and practical way to a conventional bicycle by the user himself, without the need for radical structural changes in the vehicle or even special tools, assisting in propulsion and allowing it to be used to exercise the rider's upper musculature as well.
- the proposed model comprises a retractable rod, which allows adaptation to users of different heights, provided at one end with an anatomical grip for the user's hand and with means of attachment articulated to the bicycle pedal at the opposite end.
- a retractable rod allows the cyclist to apply force to the pedal using his upper musculature (arms, shoulders, back, chest), pushing him down and pulling up while pedaling, increasing the vehicle's propulsion and exercising his upper musculature.
- This construction provides for three mounting possibilities.
- the rod can be attached to both the pedal on the right side and the pedal on the left side of the bike, allowing the cyclist to alternately exercise both sides of the upper musculature, or two rods, one on each side of the bike, can be attached so that simultaneously exercise both sides of the upper musculature with the bicycle.
- the rod is retained on the pedal, but still maintains a degree of freedom of movement, being able to rotate freely around the longitudinal axis of said pedal.
- the rod is transferring force to the pedal, the cyclist maintains it in a substantially vertical position, anatomically suitable for the effort made by the arm.
- the cyclist wants to stop using the rod simply release it.
- the proposed set still comprises means to fix the rod to the frame of the bicycle.
- the bicycle stem When it is desired to remove the bicycle stem, simply detach the end of the pedal, retract its length and fix it for transportation, keeping it always available for when it is needed again.
- the utility model revealed in the present specification presents a number of advantages in relation to the state of the art: it allows a common bicycle to be used to exercise the user's upper musculature, with obvious health gains, already who exercises arms, shoulders and back and also provides greater calorie burning; increases the propulsion of the bicycle; allows rest of the cyclist's legs, without loss of propulsion; it is capable of manual installation, without the use of tools; can be installed on any model of bicycle and on any side of the bicycle; it is adjustable for people of different heights; easy to transport when disassembled and easy to access, since it is attached to the bicycle itself.

- FIG. 10 drawing in view of a bicycle with the proposed set, in which only the user's hand and forearm are shown (in dashed lines) pulling the pedal upwards with the rod.
- Figure 11 drawing in view of the stem in a resting position, supported at an angle by the flexible wire.
- Figure 12 drawing in view of the retracted rod attached to the bicycle frame for transportation.
- the set for exercising the upper muscles on a bicycle comprises a retractable rod (1), provided at one end of a handle (2) and at the other end of fastening means (3) to a pedal special (4) (which must replace the original bicycle pedal), also comprising a flexible support wire (5) with means for fixing (6) to the rod (1) and the bicycle (7), as well as means fastening for transport (8).
- the retractable rod (1) preferably presents a telescopic structure, consisting of two tubular parts (9 and 10), preferably cylindrical (but being able to adopt other shapes of sections) of different dimensions, suitable so that one can be assembled in a way sliding into the other.
- the inner tubular part (9) has a multiplicity of longitudinally aligned holes (11) forming a gradation, which allows adjustment of the length by introducing a clamping thread with handle (12) in one of the holes ( 11), in order to compress the external tubular part (10) and obtain fixation by interference.
- the holes (11) can be arranged in both the tubular part (9) and the outer part (10) without altering the operation of the rod.
- tubular parts can be provided with other means of mutual fixation, such as retractable pins with springs (13) operationally connected to said holes (11).
- the handle (2) has an anatomical shape to receive both hands of the user, since the rod (1) was designed to be fixed on either side of the bicycle (7), being formed by a closed ring (14) with recesses (15) for the fingers (shown in most of the figures), however, can also be in the form of a horizontal bar (16) (as illustrated by figure 3).
- the end of fixing the rod (1) to the pedal (4) is provided with an opening where a bearing (17) is mounted, which cooperates with the axis (18) of the pedal (4), so that the rod (1) can rotate freely around that axis.
- the shaft (18) is equipped with an internal thread (19), which allows the fixation of the rod (1) by screw (20) and separator (21 ).
- the screw head (20) is covered with a handle (22) that allows manual threading without the use of additional tools.
- Another embodiment of the model (shown in figure 8) provides that the shaft (18) has an external extension (23) with external thread (24).
- Said extension (23) is introduced in the bearing (17) of the rod fixation end (1), so that the external thread (24) crosses said end and is available on the other side for fixation by butterfly (25).
- Said butterfly (25) is preferably provided with an anatomical shape, with indentations suitable for the user's fingers, in order to also allow fixation without the use of additional tools.
- the fixing means for transport (8) are preferably constituted by a tape with velcro (26) for fixing the retracted rod (1), when it is separated from the pedal (4) for transport, as illustrated in figure 12 It is also evident to any person skilled in the art that the velcro strap (26) can be arranged both on the stem (1) (as shown in the attached drawings) and on the bicycle frame (7) and that the means (8) can be implemented by other known devices, such as a padlock chain.
