연료전지에서 전기를 실질적으로 발생시키는 스택은 막-전극 어셈블리(Membrane-Electrode Assembly, MEA)와 세퍼레이터(separator)(또는 바이폴라 플레이트(Bipolar Plate)라고도 함)로 이루어진 단위 셀이 수 개 내지 수십 개로 적층된 구조를 가지며, 막-전극 어셈블리는 일반적으로 전해질막을 사이에 두고 그 양쪽에 애노드(anode)("연료극"으로도 지칭됨)과 캐소드(cathode)("공기극"으로도 지칭됨)이 각각 형성된 구조를 이룬다.

한편, 고분자 전해질 연료전지의 상업화를 실현하기 위해서는 아직까지 해결해야 할 많은 기술적 장벽들이 존재하고 있고, 필수적인 개선 요인은 고성능, 장수명, 저가격화의 실현이다. 이에 가장 많은 영향을 미치는 구성 요소가 막-전극 어셈블리이며, 그 중에서도 고분자 전해질막은 막-전극 어셈블리의 성능과 가격에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 핵심 요소 중 하나이다.
특히, 수송용 연료전지에 적용되는 막-전극 어셈블리에 있어서는 장시간 운전에 대한 기계적 내구성(mechanical durability) 확보가 무엇보다 중요하다. 일반적으로 막-전극 어셈블리의 기계적 내구성은 연료전지의 구동 중에 팽창 및 수축을 반복하는 고분자 전해질막의 내구성에 실질적으로 의존한다.
고분자 전해질막의 기계적 내구성을 증가시키기 위한 일환으로, 다공성 지지체(porous support)에 이오노머 분산액을 함침시켜 제조되는 강화 복합막(reinforced composite membrane) 타입의 고분자 전해질막이 제안되었다. 그러나, 상기 다공성 지지체의 두께가 증가할수록 이온 전도도와 같은 고분자 전해질막의 전기적 성능이 저하되기 때문에 상기 다공성 지지체의 두께를 무한정 증가시킬 수 없고, 따라서 다공성 지지체의 두께 조절을 통한 고분자 전해질막의 기계적 내구성 향상에는 한계가 있다.
한편, 막-전극 어셈블리의 기계적 내구성 평가는 일반적으로 NEDO 프로토콜에 따라 wet/dry 사이클 횟수를 측정함으로써 수행되는데, 이와 같은 평가에는 장시간(50일 이상)이 소요되는 문제가 있다. 더욱이, 막-전극 어셈블리의 내구성 평가를 위해서는 막-전극 어셈블리 샘플이 실제로 만들어져야 하기 때문에, (i) 내구성 평가를 위한 막-전극 어셈블리 샘플에 제작에도 많은 시간이 걸릴 뿐만 아니라, (ii) 전극 형성에 고가의 귀금속이 사용된다는 점에서 막-전극 어셈블리 샘플 제작에 많은 비용이 소요된다.
본 발명의 일 관점은, 이온 전도도와 같은 성능의 저하 없이도 우수한 기계적 물성을 가짐으로써, NEDO 프로토콜에 따라 측정되는 wet/dry 사이클이 30,000회 이상일 정도로 높은 내구성을 갖는 막-전극 어셈블리의 제조를 담보할 수 있는 고분자 전해질막을 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 다른 관점은, 이온 전도도와 같은 성능의 저하 없이도 우수한 기계적 물성을 갖는 고분자 전해질막을 포함함으로써 NEDO 프로토콜에 따라 측정되는 wet/dry 사이클이 30,000회 이상일 정도로 높은 내구성을 갖는 막-전극 어셈블리를 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 또 다른 관점은, 막-전극 어셈블리를 실제로 제조하지 않고도 그 기계적 내구성을 파악하는 것을 가능하게 함으로써 막-전극 어셈블리 및 연료전지의 연구 및 개발에 소요되는 시간과 비용을 상당히 절감할 수 있는, 고분자 전해질막의 내구성 측정방법을 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 일 관점에 따라, 다수의 공극들을 갖는 다공성 지지체 및 상기 공극들을 채우는 이오노머(ionomer)를 포함하는 복합층(composite layer)을 포함하고, 150 N/mm 이상의 MD 인열강도(MD tear strength), 150 N/mm 이상의 TD 인열강도(TD tear strength), 8% 이하의 찌름 초기 변형률(stab initial strain), 및 10% 이하의 찌름 최종 변형률(stab final strain)을 갖는, 고분자 전해질막이 제공된다.
상기 고분자 전해질막은 80℃ 및 50 %RH의 조건에서 0.03 내지 0.1 S/cm의 면방향(In-Plane) 이온 전도도 및 0.03 내지 0.1 S/cm의 두께방향(Through-Plane) 이온 전도도를 가질 수 있다.
상기 고분자 전해질막은 170 내지 320 N/mm의 MD 인열강도, 160 내지 320 N/mm의 TD 인열강도, 1 내지 6 %의 찌름 초기 변형률, 및 2 내지 8 %의 찌름 최종 변형률을 가질 수 있다.
상기 복합층은 제1 면 및 상기 제1 면의 반대편의 제2 면을 갖고, 상기 고분자 전해질막은, 상기 제1 면 상에 배치되어 있으며 제1 이오노머를 포함하는 제1 수지층; 및 상기 제2 면 상에 배치되어 있으며 제2 이오노머를 포함하는 제2 수지층을 더 포함할 수 있며, 상기 복합층의 이오노머의 적어도 일부는 상기 제1 이오노머 및 상기 제2 이오노머 중 적어도 하나와 동일한 이오노머일 수 있다.
상기 고분자 전해질막의 두께는 10 내지 50 ㎛일 수 있고, 상기 복합층의 두께는 상기 고분자 전해질막의 두께의 30 내지 90 %일 수 있다.
상기 다공성 지지체는 상기 제1 면을 갖는 제1 다공성 서브-지지체 및 상기 제2 면을 갖는 제2 다공성 서브-지지체를 포함할 수 있고, 상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체는 제1 공극들을 갖되, 상기 제1 공극들은 상기 제1 이오노머와 동일한 이오노머로 채워져 있을 수 있고, 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체는 제2 공극들을 갖되, 상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체에 인접한 상기 제2 공극들의 일부는 상기 제1 이오노머와 동일한 이오노머로 채워져 있을 수 있고 상기 제2 수지층에 인접한 상기 제2 공극들의 나머지는 상기 제2 이오노머와 동일한 이오노머로 채워져 있을 수 있다.
상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들은 서로 접촉하고 있을 수 있다.
상기 다공성 지지체는 상기 제1 면을 갖는 제1 다공성 서브-지지체, 상기 제2 면을 갖는 제2 다공성 서브-지지체, 및 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들 사이에 적어도 하나의 제3 다공성 서브-지지체를 포함할 수 있고, 상기 제1, 제2 및 제3 다공성 서브-지지체들은 서로 접촉하고 있을 수 있다.
상기 제1 이오노머는 상기 제2 이오노머와 동일 또는 상이할 수 있다.
본 발명의 다른 관점에 따라, 애노드; 캐소드; 및 상기 애노드와 상기 캐소드 사이에 배치된 제1항에 따른 고분자 전해질막을 포함하는, 막-전극 어셈블리가 제공된다.
본 발명의 또 다른 관점에 따라, 고분자 전해질막으로부터 소정의 크기 및 형태(predetermined size and shape)를 갖는 샘플을 취하는 단계; 상기 샘플을 ASTM F1342에 따른 찌름 테스트(puncture test)용 홀더(holder)에 고정시키는 단계; ASTM F1342에 따른 찌름 테스트용 프로브(probe)를 이용하여 상기 샘플에 대해 소정 하중(predetermined load) 및 소정 속도의 찌름(stabbing)을 반복적으로 수행하는 단계; 각각의 찌름이 수행된 후마다 상기 샘플의 변위(displacement)를 측정하는 단계; 및 상기 측정된 변위들 중 적어도 하나를 이용하여 찌름 변형률(stab strain)을 산출하는 단계 를 포함하는, 고분자 전해질막의 내구성 측정방법이 제공된다.
상기 찌름 변형률 산출 단계는, 아래의 식 1에 따라 찌름 초기 변형률을 산출하는 단계; 및 아래의 식 2에 따라 찌름 최종 변형률을 산출하는 단계를 포함할 수 있다.

상기 샘플은 50mm×50mm의 정사각형 형태를 가질 수 있고, 상기 소정 하중은 10 N일 수 있고, 상기 소정 속도는 100 mm/min일 수 있다.
상기 측정방법은 23±2 ℃의 온도 및 50±5 %의 상대습도에서 수행될 수 있다.
상기 샘플에 가해지는 초기 하중(initial load)은 0.2 N일 수 있다.
본 발명에 의하면, 다공성 지지체 내에 이오노머의 함침성이 개선된 고분자 전해질막이 제공될 수 있다. 따라서, 본 발명의 고분자 전해질막은 이온 전도도 등의 전기적 성능이 우수할 뿐만 아니라 높은 인열강도와 찌름 저항력(stabbing resistance)을 가짐으로써 향상된 기계적 내구성을 나타낸다.
특히, 본 발명의 고분자 전해질막은 본 발명의 범위의 인열강도 및 찌름 변형률을 가짐으로써 NEDO 프로토콜에 따라 측정되는 wet/dry 사이클이 30,000회 이상인 고내구성의 막-전극 어셈블리의 제조를 담보할 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명에 의하면, 막-전극 어셈블리의 기계적 내구성 평가를 위해 일반적으로 측정되는 NEDO 프로토콜에 따른 wet/dry 사이클에 고분자 전해질막의 인열강도뿐만 아니라 그 찌름 변형률이 직접적으로 관련되어 있음이 규명되었고, 따라서, 고분자 전해질막의 제조 단계에서 상기 고분자 전해질막의 인열강도 및 찌름 변형률을 측정함으로써 막-전극 어셈블리를 실제로 제조하지 않고도 상기 고분자 전해질막을 이용하여 제조될 막-전극 어셈블리의 기계적 내구성을 쉽게 예측할 수 있어 막-전극 어셈블리 및 연료전지의 연구 및 개발에 소요되는 시간과 비용이 상당히 절감될 수 있다.

이하, 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본 발명의 실시예들에 대하여 상세히 설명한다.

도 1에 예시된 바와 같이, 본 발명의 고분자 전해질막(100)은 다수의 공극들을 갖는 다공성 지지체(10) 및 상기 공극들을 채우는 이오노머(21, 22)를 포함하는 복합층(110)을 포함한다.
상기 다공성 지지체(10)는 열적 및 화학적 분해에 대한 저항성이 높은 과불소화 중합체[예를 들어, 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌(PTFE), 또는 테트라플루오로에틸렌과 CF2=CFCnF2n+1(n은 1 내지 5의 실수) 또는 CF2=CFO-(CF2CF(CF3)O)mCnF2n+1(m은 0 내지 15의 실수, n은 1 내지 15의 실수)과의 공중합체]를 포함할 수 있다. 비배타적 예로서, 상업적으로 판매되고 있는 연신된 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌 필름(e-PTFE film)이 상기 다공성 지지체(10)로 사용될 수 있다.
대안적으로, 상기 다공성 지지체(10)는 탄화수소계 고분자로 형성된 부직 웹(nonwoven web)일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 다공성 지지체(10)는 40 내지 5000 nm의 평균 직경을 갖는 나노 섬유들이 랜덤하게 배열되어 있는 나노웹(nanoweb)일 수 있다. 상기 탄화수소계 고분자는 우수한 내화학성을 가지며 고습의 환경에서 수분에 의한 형태 변형 우려가 없는 고분자, 예를 들어, 지방족 폴리아미드, 방향족 폴리아미드, 폴리이미드, 폴리에테르이미드, 폴리아크릴로니트릴, 폴리아닐린, 폴리에틸렌옥사이드, 폴리에틸렌나프탈레이트, 폴리부틸렌테레프탈레이트, 스티렌 부타디엔 고무, 폴리스티렌, 폴리비닐 클로라이드, 폴리비닐알코올, 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드, 폴리비닐 부틸렌, 폴리우레탄, 폴리벤즈옥사졸, 폴리벤즈이미다졸, 폴리아미드이미드, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트, 폴리페닐렌설파이드, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 이들 중 2 이상의 공중합체, 또는 이들 중 2 이상의 혼합물일 수 있다. 특히, 폴리이미드는 우수한 내열성, 내화학성 및 형태 안정성을 갖는다는 점에서 상기 다공성 지지체(10) 형성을 위한 바람직한 후보 물질들 중 하나이다.
상기 다공성 지지체(10)의 다공도는 45% 이상, 바람직하게는 50% 이상, 더욱 바람직하게는 60 내지 90%일 수 있다. 상기 다공성 지지체(10)의 다공도가 45% 미만이면 상기 다공성 지지체(10) 내의 이오노머 양이 지나치게 적어져 고분자 전해질막(100)의 이온 전도도가 저하된다. 반면, 상기 다공성 지지체(10)의 다공도가 90%를 초과할 경우 그 본연의 보강 기능이 훼손될 뿐만 아니라 그 형태 안정성이 저하됨으로써 후공정이 원활하게 진행되지 않을 수 있다.
상기 이오노머(21, 22)는 양이온 교환 그룹을 갖는 양이온 전도체 또는 음이온 교환 그룹을 갖는 음이온 전도체이다.
상기 양이온 전도체는 술폰산기, 카르복실기, 보론산기, 인산기, 이미드기, 술폰이미드기, 술폰아미드기, 술폰산 플루오라이드기 및 이들의 유도체로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 적어도 하나의 양이온 교환기를 포함하는 불소계 고분자일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 양이온 전도체는 폴리(퍼플루오로술폰산), 폴리(퍼플루오로카르복실산), 술폰산기를 포함하는 테트라플루오로에틸렌과 플루오로비닐에테르의 공중합체, 탈불소화된 황화 폴리에테르케톤, 또는 이들 중 2 이상의 혼합물일 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.

상기 음이온 전도체는 하이드록시 이온, 카보네이트 또는 바이카보네이트와 같은 음이온을 이송시킬 수 있는 폴리머이다. 상기 음이온 전도체로는 일반적으로 금속 수산화물이 도핑된 폴리머를 사용할 수 있으며, 구체적으로 금속 수산화물이 도핑된 폴리(에테르술폰), 폴리스티렌, 비닐계 폴리머, 폴리(비닐 클로라이드), 폴리(비닐리덴 플루오라이드), 폴리(테트라플루오로에틸렌), 폴리(벤즈이미다졸) 또는 폴리(에틸렌글리콜) 등을 사용할 수 있다.
본 발명의 고분자 전해질막(100)은 150 N/mm 이상(예를 들어, 170 내지 320 N/mm)의 MD 인열강도(MD tear strength) 및 150 N/mm 이상(예를 들어, 160 내지 320 N/mm)의 TD 인열강도(TD tear strength)를 갖는다.
본 명세서에서 사용되는 용어들인 "MD" 및 "TD"는 "Machine Direction" 및 "Traverse Direction"을 각각 의미한다. 상기 "Machine Direction"은 고분자 전해질막(100)이 제조될 때 그 이동 방향이고, 상기 "Traverse Direction"은 상기 "Machine Direction"에 수직인 방향이다.
본 발명에서 고분자 전해질막(100)의 "인열강도"는 다음과 같이 측정되는 값이다.

50mm×50mm의 샘플을 취한 후 만능시험기(Universal Test Machine: UTM)(Instron 5966)를 이용하여 ASTM D624에 따라 하기의 조건들 하에 상기 샘플이 찢겨질 때까지 가해진 최대 힘(maximum force)을 측정한다.

이어서, 다음의 식 3을 이용하여 상기 샘플의 인열강도를 산출한다.

여기서, TS는 상기 샘플의 인열강도(N/mm)이고, F는 상기 샘플에 가해진 최대 힘(N)이며, d는 상기 샘플의 중앙부 내 3 지점들에서 각각 측정된 두께들의 산술평균인 중간 두께(median thickness)(mm)이다.
위와 같은 방식으로 5개의 샘플들의 인열강도를 각각 구한 후 이들의 산술 평균을 산출함으로써 고분자 전해질막(100)의 인열강도가 얻어진다.
고분자 전해질막(100)이 상술한 범위들의 MD 인열강도 및 TD 인열강도를 갖는다고 하더라도, 그러한 고분자 전해질막(100)을 이용하여 통상적 방법에 따라 제조되는 막-전극 어셈블리가 업계에서 요구되는 정도의 높은 내구성(즉, NEDO 프로토콜에 따라 측정되는 wet/dry 사이클 > 30,000회)을 언제나 만족시키는 것은 아니다. 다시 말해, 150 N/mm 이상의 MD 인열강도 및 150 N/mm 이상의 TD 인열강도는 막-전극 어셈블리가 30,000회 이상의 wet/dry 사이클을 만족시키기 위한 필요조건일 뿐, 그 충분조건은 될 수 없다.
따라서, 고분자 전해질막(100)이 150 N/mm 이상의 MD 인열강도 및 150 N/mm 이상의 TD 인열강도를 갖는다고 하더라도, 그것을 이용하여 통상적 방법에 따라 제조되는 막-전극 어셈블리가 충분한 내구성을 가질 지의 여부를 파악하기 위해서는 막-전극 어셈블리 샘플을 실제로 제작하여 NEDO 프로토콜에 따른 내구성 테스트를 수행할 것이 요구된다. 이것은 시간이 많이 걸릴뿐더러 비용 상승을 유발한다.
본 발명에 의하면, 150 N/mm 이상의 MD 인열강도 및 150 N/mm 이상의 TD 인열강도를 갖는 고분자 전해질막(100)이 어느 정도(a certain degree) 이상의 찌름 저항력(stab resistance)을 가질 경우, 그것을 이용하여 통상적 방법에 따라 제조되는 막-전극 어셈블리가 30,000회 이상의 wet/dry 사이클을 항상 만족시킨다는 사실이 발견되었다. 따라서, 본 발명에 의하면, 고분자 전해질막(100)의 인열강도는 물론이고 그 찌름 저항력을 측정함으로써 막-전극 어셈블리를 실제로 제조하지 않고도 상기 막-전극 어셈블리가 업계에서 요구되는 기계적 내구성을 만족할지를 파악하는 것이 가능하고, 그 결과, 막-전극 어셈블리 및 연료전지의 연구 및 개발에 소요되는 시간과 비용을 상당히 절감할 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 고분자 전해질막(100)의 내구성 측정방법은, 고분자 전해질막(100)으로부터 소정의 크기 및 형태를 갖는 샘플을 취하는 단계, 상기 샘플을 ASTM F1342에 따른 찌름 테스트용 홀더에 고정시키는 단계, ASTM F1342에 따른 찌름 테스트용 프로브를 이용하여 상기 샘플에 대해 소정 하중 및 소정 속도의 찌름을 반복적으로 수행하는 단계, 각각의 찌름이 수행된 후마다 상기 샘플의 변위를 측정하는 단계, 및 상기 측정된 변위들 중 적어도 하나를 이용하여 찌름 변형률(stab strain)을 산출하는 단계를 포함한다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 의하면, 상기 찌름 변형률 산출 단계는 찌름 초기 변형률을 산출하는 단계 및 찌름 최종 변형률을 산출하는 단계를 포함할 수 있다.
더욱 구체적으로, 본 발명에서 고분자 전해질막(100)의 "찌름 초기 변형률" 및 "찌름 최종 변형률"은 다음과 같이 측정된다.

50mm×50mm의 샘플을 취한 후 만능시험기(UTM)(Instron 5966)를 이용하여 상기 샘플의 찌름 저항력을 측정한다. 반복적 찌름을 실행하기 위한 악세서리로서 Instron사에서 제공하는 ASTM F1342에 따른 찌름 테스트(puncture test)용 지그(샘플 홀더 및 프로브)를 이용한다. 구체적으로, 상기 샘플을 홀더(holder)에 고정시킨 상태(베이스 레벨로부터 상기 샘플까지의 거리: 100 mm)에서 프로브(probe)로 반복적 찌름(load: 10 N)을 아래의 조건들 하에서 수행하고, 각각의 찌름에 따른 상기 거리의 감소[즉, '변위(displacement)']를 측정한다. 이때, 0.2 N의 하중(load)이 가해졌을 때의 변위가 영점(zero point)로 간주된다.

즉, 막-전극 어셈블리의 기계적 내구성 평가를 위해 일반적으로 측정되는 NEDO 프로토콜에 따른 wet/dry 사이클에 고분자 전해질막(100)의 MD/TD 인열강도 및 찌름 초기/최종 변형률이 직접적인 관련이 있음이 본 발명에 의해 규명되었다. 따라서, 고분자 전해질막(100)의 제조 단계에서 상기 고분자 전해질막(100)의 인열강도 및 찌름 변형률을 측정함으로써 막-전극 어셈블리를 실제로 제조하지 않고도 그 기계적 내구성을 쉽게 예측할 수 있어 막-전극 어셈블리 및 연료전지의 개발에 소요되는 시간과 비용이 상당히 절감될 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 의하면, 상기 고분자 전해질막(100)은 80℃ 및 50 %RH의 조건에서 0.03 내지 0.1 S/cm, 예를 들어 0.046 내지 0.1 S/cm의 면방향(In-Plane) 이온 전도도 및 0.03 내지 0.1 S/cm, 예를 들어 0.042 내지 0.1 S/cm의 두께방향(Through-Plane) 이온 전도도를 가질 수 있다. 본 발명의 고분자 전해질막(100)이 우수한 기계적 물성을 가지면서도 이와 같이 높은 이온 전도도를 가질 수 있는 구체적 이유는 후술한다.
즉, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 고분자 전해질막(100)은 이온 전도도와 같은 성능 저하 없이도 우수한 기계적 물성(즉, 150 N/mm 이상의 MD 인열강도, 150 N/mm 이상의 TD 인열강도, 8% 이하의 찌름 초기 변형률, 및 10% 이하의 찌름 최종 변형률)을 가짐으로써, wet/dry 사이클 30,000회 이상의 높은 내구성은 물론이고 우수한 전기적 성능을 갖는 막-전극 어셈블리의 제조를 담보할 수 있다.
본 발명에서 면방향 이온 전도도와 두께방향 이온 전도도는 다음의 방법들에 따라 각각 측정된다.
[면방향 이온 전도도]
고분자 전해질막(100)의 면방향 이온 전도도는 Magnetic Suspension Balance 장치(Bell Japan社)를 이용하여 80℃ 및 50 %RH 에서 측정한다.
[두께방향 이온 전도도]
고분자 전해질막(100)의 두께방향 이온 전도도는 두께방향 막 테스트 시스템(Through-Plane Membrane Test System)(Scribner Associates, MTS 740)을 이용하여 정전류 4단자법에 따라 측정한다. 구체적으로, 샘플(10mm×30mm)을 80 ℃ 및 50 %RH 조건하에서 교류 전류를 샘플의 양면에 인가하면서 샘플 내에서 발생하는 교류전위 차이를 측정하여 막 저항(R)(Ω)을 얻는다. 이어서, 아래의 식 4를 이용하여 고분자 전해질막(100)의 두께방향 이온 전도도를 산출한다.

도 1에 예시된 바와 같이, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 의하면, 상기 복합층(110)은 제1 면 및 상기 제1 면의 반대편의 제2 면을 갖고, 상기 고분자 전해질막(100)은 상기 제1 면 상에 배치되어 있는 제1 수지층(120) 및 상기 제2 면 상에 배치되어 있는 제2 수지층(130)을 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 제1 수지층(120)은 제1 이오노머(21)를 포함할 수 있고, 상기 제2 수지층(130)은 제2 이오노머(22)를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 복합층(110)의 이오노머의 적어도 일부는 상기 제1 이오노머(21) 및 상기 제2 이오노머(22) 중 적어도 하나와 동일한 이오노머일 수 있다.
상기 고분자 전해질막(100)의 두께는 10 내지 50 ㎛일 수 있고, 상기 복합층(110)의 두께는 상기 고분자 전해질막(100)의 두께의 30 내지 90 %, 바람직하게는 35 내지 85 %, 더욱 바람직하게는 40 내지 80 %일 수 있다. 상기 복합층(110)의 두께 비율이 30% 미만이면 다공성 지지체(10) 사용으로 인한 상기 고분자 전해질막(100)의 기계적 내구성 및 치수 안정성 향상 효과가 미미하다. 반면, 상기 복합층(110)의 두께 비율이 90%를 초과하면 상기 제1 및 제2 수지층들(120, 130)의 두께가 너무 얇아 고분자 전해질막(100)의 이온 전도도가 낮아진다.
도 1에 예시된 바와 같이, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 다공성 지지체(10)는 제1 다공성 서브-지지체(11) 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)를 포함한다.
상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체(11)는 상기 복합층(110)의 상기 제1 면을 갖는다. 즉, 상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체(11)의 일면이 상기 복합층(110)의 상기 제1 면을 구성한다. 이와 유사하게, 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)는 상기 복합층(110)의 상기 제2 면을 갖는다. 즉, 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)의 일면이 상기 복합층(110)의 상기 제2 면을 구성한다.
상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)은 동일한 종류의 지지체들이거나 상이한 종류의 지지체들일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12) 모두 e-PTFE 필름들(e-PTFE films) 또는 부직 웹들(nonwoven webs)일 수 있다. 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12) 모두가 e-PTFE 필름들일 경우, 이들은 그 연신 방향들이 서로 수직이 되도록 적층될 수 있다.
도 1에 예시된 바와 같이, 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)은 서로 접촉하고 있을 수 있다. 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)이 서로 타이트하게(tightly) 접촉하고 있기 때문에, 이들이 서로 구별될 수 있는 상이한 종류의 다공성 지지체들이 아니라면 이들간의 계면이 시각적으로 확인 불가능할 수 있다. 즉, 상기 다공성 지지체(10)는 겉보기 단일 다공성 지지체(apparent single porous support)일 수 있다.
상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)을 갖는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 고분자 전해질막(100)은 상기 다공성 지지체(10)와 동일한 두께를 갖는(즉, 동일 또는 유사한 기계적 물성을 제공하는) 실제 단일 다공성 지지체(actual single porous support)에 의해 보강된 고분자 전해질막에 비해 여러 측면에서 많은 이점들을 제공한다. 예를 들어, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 의하면, 상기 다공성 지지체(10)와 동일한 두께를 갖는 실제 단일 다공성 지지체가 이오노머로 함침되는 경우에 비해, (i) 이오노머 함침 공정에서 상기 이오노머와 직접적으로 접촉하는 다공성 지지체(10)의 표면적이 크기 때문에 이오노머 용액 또는 분산액에 대한 다공성 지지체(10)의 젖음성(wetting)이 좋아 지지체 사용으로 인한 고분자 전해질막(100)의 이온 전도도 저하를 최소화할 수 있고(즉, 지지체의 공극들 내에 존재하던 공기가 더 잘 빠져나가면서 그 빈 공간을 이오노머가 채움으로써, 이온 전도도에 악영향을 미치는 미세 기포가 최종 고분자 전해질막 내에 잔류하는 것이 방지되면서 수소 이온의 이동 경로인 워터 채널이 지지체 두께 방향으로 잘 형성될 수 있고), (ii) 고분자 전해질막의 변형을 완충해줄 수 있는 면적이 늘어나기 때문에 고분자 전해질막의 찌름 변형률이 더 낮아질 수 있다(즉, 찌름 저항력이 향상될 수 있다).
결과적으로, 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)을 갖는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 고분자 전해질막(100)은, 이온 전도도와 같은 성능 저하 없이도 우수한 기계적 물성을 가질 수 있다.
상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체(11)는 다수의 제1 공극들을 갖되, 상기 제1 공극들은 상기 제1 수지층(120)의 상기 제1 이오노머(21)와 동일한 이오노머로 채워져 있을 수 있다.
상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)는 다수의 제2 공극들을 갖되, 상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체(11)에 인접한 상기 제2 공극들의 일부는 상기 제1 수지층(120)의 상기 제1 이오노머(21)와 동일한 이오노머로 채워져 있을 수 있고 상기 제2 수지층(130)에 인접한 상기 제2 공극들의 나머지는 상기 제2 수지층(130)의 상기 제2 이오노머(22)와 동일한 이오노머로 채워져 있을 수 있다.
즉, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 의하면, 상기 제1 및 제2 이오노머들(21, 22) 사이의 계면이 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12) 내에 존재하기 때문에[즉, 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12) 내에 존재하는 제1 이오노머(21)가 앵커(anchor)로서 기능하기 때문에], 접착제 및/또는 열압착을 통해 다공성 지지체들이 접합된 적층 구조 못지 않게 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)의 사이의 강한 접착력이 확보될 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 상기 접착제 및/또는 열압착을 통한 지지체들의 접합시 야기될 수 있는 이온 전도도 저하를 방지할 수 있다. 따라서, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 고분자 전해질막(100)은, 이온 전도도와 같은 성능 저하 없이도 우수한 기계적 물성을 가질 수 있다.
상기 제1 이오노머(21)는 상기 제2 이오노머(22)와 동일 또는 상이할 수 있다.
이하에서는, 도 1에 예시된 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 고분자 전해질막(100)의 제조방법을 구체적으로 설명한다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 방법은, (i) 제1 이오노머(21)를 포함하는 제1 혼합액(mixed liquid)을 캐스팅(casting)하는 단계, (ii) 상기 제1 혼합액 상에 건조 상태(dry state)의 제1 다공성 서브-지지체(11)를 올려놓음으로써 상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체(11)를 전체적으로 습윤 상태(wet state)로 만드는 단계, (iii) 상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체(11)가 전체적으로 습윤 상태로 만들어진 직후 상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체(11)에 건조 상태의 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)를 합지(add on)하되, 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)이 접촉하게 되도록 합지하는 단계, (iv) 제2 이오노머(22)를 포함하는 제2 혼합액을 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12) 상에 가함으로써(applying) 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)를 전체적으로 습윤 상태로 만드는 단계, 및 (v) 습윤 상태의 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)을 건조하는 단계를 포함한다.
상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체(11)가 상기 제1 혼합액에 의해 전체적으로 습윤 상태로 유지되는 동안 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)가 그 위에 합지됨으로써 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)의 제2 공극들 중 일부가 상기 제1 혼합액으로 채워질 수 있다. 따라서, 전술한 바와 같이, 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)의 제2 공극들 중 일부에 존재하는 제1 이오노머(21)가 앵커로서 기능하기 때문에 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)의 사이의 강한 접착력이 확보될 수 있고, 고분자 전해질막(100)의 기계적 물성이 현저히 향상될 수 있다.
더욱이, 본 발명에 의하면, 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)의 사이의 이러한 높은 접착력이 별도의 접착제 사용 및/또는 열압착(hot press) 공정 없이 획득될 수 있기 때문에, 상기 접착제 및/또는 열압착을 통한 지지체들의 접합시 야기될 수 있는 이온 전도도 저하를 방지할 수 있다. 따라서, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 고분자 전해질막(100)은, 이온 전도도와 같은 성능 저하 없이도 우수한 기계적 물성을 가질 수 있다.
즉, 본 발명의 고분자 전해질막(100)은 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)의 사이에 이오노머만으로 이루어진 수지층을 포함하지 않는다는 점에서, 2 이상의 고분자 전해질막들을 제조한 후 접착제 및/또는 열압착을 통해 이들을 접합시킴으로써 제조되는 적층형 고분자 전해질막과 구별된다. 본 발명과 달리, 이러한 적층형 고분자 전해질막은, (i) 전술한 바와 같이 접착제 및/또는 열압착으로 인한 이온 전도도 저하가 필연적으로 수반될 뿐만 아니라, (ii) 다공성 지지체들 사이에 이오노머만으로 이루어진 수지층이 존재함으로써 수소 가스 이동에 대한 저항이 상대적으로 낮아지게 되고, 그 결과 상대적으로 높은 수소 투과도로 인해 화학적 내구성이 현격히 저하된다.
전술한 바와 같이, 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)은 동일한 종류의 지지체들이거나 상이한 종류의 지지체들일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12) 모두 e-PTFE 필름들(e-PTFE films) 또는 부직 웹들(nonwoven webs)일 수 있다.
일반적으로, e-PTFE 필름은 그 연신 방향의 기계적 물성(예를 들어, 인장강도, 신율 등)과 연신 방향에 수직인 방향의 기계적 물성 사이에 무시할 수 없는 차이가 존재하는 비등방성 필름이다. 따라서, 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12) 모두가 e-PTFE 필름들일 경우, 이들을 그 연신 방향들이 서로 수직이 되도록 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)를 상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체(11) 상에 합지함으로써 고분자 전해질막(100)의 기계적 물성을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있다.
제2 이오노머(22)를 포함하는 제2 혼합액을 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12) 상에 가함으로써 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)를 전체적으로 습윤 상태로 만드는 단계는, (i) 상기 제1 이오노머(21)와 상기 제2 이오노머(22)가 동일한 경우에는 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)를 상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체(11)에 합지한 후 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)을 함께 상기 제2 혼합액에 침지시키는 단계, 또는 (ii) 상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체(12)의 노출면 상에 상기 제2 혼합액을 바 코팅, 콤마 코팅, 슬롯다이, 스크린 프린팅, 스프레이 코팅, 닥터 블레이드 등의 방법을 이용하여 도포하는 단계를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 제1 및 제2 혼합액들 각각은 물, 친수성 용매, 유기용매, 또는 이들 중 2 이상의 혼합용매 내에 상기 제1 이오노머(21) 또는 상기 제2 이오노머(22)가 용해 또는 분산되어 있는 용액 또는 분산액일 수 있다.
상기 친수성 용매는 탄소수 1 내지 12의 직쇄상 또는 분지상의 포화 또는 불포화 탄화수소를 주쇄로서 포함하며, 알코올, 이소프로필 알코올, 케톤, 알데히드, 카보네이트, 카르복실레이트, 카르복실산, 에테르 및 아미드로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택되는 하나 이상의 관능기를 가진 것일 수 있으며, 지환식 또는 방향족 사이클로 화합물을 주쇄의 최소한 일부로 포함할 수 있다.
상기 유기 용매는 N-메틸피롤리돈, 디메틸술폭사이드, 테트라하이드로퓨란, 또는 이들 중 2 이상의 혼합물일 수 있다.
상기 제 1 이오노머(21) 또는 상기 제 2 이오노머(22)로 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)의 공극들을 완전히 채우기 위하여 온도 및 시간 등의 다양한 요소들, 예를 들면, 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)의 두께, 상기 제1 및 제2 혼합액들의 농도, 및 용매/분산매의 종류 중 적어도 하나가 적절히 조절될 수 있다.
합지된 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)을 건조하는 단계는 60 ℃ 내지 150 ℃에서 15 분 내지 1 시간 동안 1 차 건조하고, 150 ℃ 내지 190 ℃에서 3 분 내지 1 시간 동안 2 차 건조하여 이루어질 수 있고, 구체적으로 60 ℃ 내지 120 ℃에서 15 분 내지 1 시간 동안 1 차 건조하고, 170 ℃ 내지 190 ℃에서 3 분 내지 1 시간 동안 2 차 건조하여 이루어질 수 있다. 상기 1 차 건조 온도가 60 ℃ 미만이거나 1차 건조 시간이 15 분 미만이면 용매/분산매가 1 차적으로 빠져나가지 못해 높은 밀도의(dense) 막을 얻을 수 없고, 2 차 건조 온도가 190 ℃를 초과하거나 2차 건조 시간이 1 시간을 초과하게 되면 이온 교환 그룹(예를 들어, 술폰산기)가 분해되어 막의 성능이 저하되는 문제가 있을 수 있다.
선택적으로(optionally), 도 1에 예시된 고분자 전해질막(100)은 2 개의 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)만을 포함하고 있지만, 본 발명의 고분자 전해질막(100)은 요구되는 구체적 물성들을 고려하여 2개를 초과하는 다공성 서브-지지체들을 포함할 수도 있다.
본 발명의 다른 실시예에 의하면, 고분자 전해질막(100)이 다수의 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12) 대신에 단일 다공성 지지체(10)를 포함하고, 상기 단일 다공성 지지체(10)의 공극들에 함침될 이오노머 분산액은 이오노머를 용매에 첨가한 후 공명음파방식으로 혼합함으로써 제조될 수 있다. 이와 같이 제조되는 이오노머 분산액은 높은 분산 안전성을 갖는다.
상기 공명음파방식에 따른 혼합을 통해 얻어진 혼합물에 고압을 가함으로써 이오노머 분산액의 분산 안정성을 더욱 증가시킬 수 있다.
본 발명에서 높은 분산 안정성을 갖는 이오노머 분산액은 유동계(Rheometer)를 이용하여 전단속도(shear rate)를 0.001 s-1로부터 1000 s-1까지 증가시킨 다음 1000 s-1로부터 0.001 s-1까지 감소시키면서 상기 이오노머 분산액의 점도 및 전단응력을 각각 측정할 때, 하기의 식 5로 정의되는 점도비(viscosity ratio)가 1.7 이하이고, 하기 식 6으로 정의되는 전단응력비(shear stress ratio)가 1.5 이하인 이오노머 분산액을 의미한다.

고함량의 이오노머 고형물을 함유하면서도 충분히 높은 분산 안정성을 갖는 이오노머 분산액은 고분자 전해질막(100) 내 이오노머의 모폴로지를 최적화할 수 있으며, 그에 따라 고분자 전해질막(100)의 이온 전도도 및 내구성을 모두 향상시킬 수 있다. 즉, 상기 고분자 전해질막(100)은 150 N/mm 이상의 MD 인열강도 150 N/mm 이상의 TD 인열강도, 8% 이하의 찌름 초기 변형률, 및 10% 이하의 찌름 최종 변형률의 우수한 기계적 내구성을 가질 뿐만 아니라, 80℃ 및 50 %RH의 조건에서 0.03 내지 0.1 S/cm의 면방향 이온 전도도 및 0.03 내지 0.1 S/cm의 두께방향 이온 전도도를 가질 수 있다.
구체적으로, 높은 분산 안정성을 갖는 이오노머 분산액은 함침성이 우수할 뿐만 아니라 입자 사이즈가 작고 균일하여, 다공성 지지체(10)에 함침 및 코팅되어 강화 복합막 타입의 고분자 전해질막(100)을 형성할 때 수소 이온 이동 경로를 제공하는 워터 채널(water channel)이 면방향은 물론이고 두께방향으로도 잘 형성되도록 함으로써 상기 고분자 전해질막(100)의 면방향 및 두께방향의 이온 전도도를 모두 향상시킬 수 있다.
상술한 높은 분산 안정성을 갖는 이오노머 분산액은 다수의 다공성 서브-지지체들(11, 12)을 갖는 고분자 전해질막(100)에도 적용될 수 있음은 물론이다.
본 발명의 막-전극 어셈블리는 애노드, 캐소드, 및 상기 애노드와 상기 캐소드 사이에 배치된 상기 고분자 전해질막(100)을 포함한다. 상기 막-전극 어셈블리는 고분자 전해질막으로서 본 발명에 따른 고분자 전해질막(100)을 사용하는 것을 제외하고는 통상의 연료전지용 막-전극 어셈블리와 동일하므로, 본 명세서에서 상세한 설명은 생략한다.
이하, 본 발명이 속하는 기술 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자가 용이하게 실시할 수 있도록 본 발명의 실시예에 대하여 상세히 설명한다. 그러나 본 발명은 여러 가지 상이한 형태로 구현될 수 있으며 여기에서 설명하는 실시예에 한정되지 않는다.
[제조예: 고분자 전해질막의 제조]
(실시예 1)
제 1 다공성 서브-지지체(e-PTFE, 기공 크기: 0.10 ㎛ 내지 0.15 ㎛, 두께: 6 ㎛, MD/TD 인장 신율 비율 1.1)를 당량(EW)이 800 g/eq인 고도로 불소화된 고분자를 20 중량%의 함량으로 포함하는 제 1 이오노머 분산액("공명음파방식 혼합 + 고압 분산", 점도비: 1.01, 전단응력비: 1.01)으로 적셨다.
상기 제 1 다공성 서브-지지체가 적셔진 상태에서 제 2 다공성 서브-지지체(e-PTFE, 기공 크기: 0.10 ㎛ 내지 0.15 ㎛, 두께: 6 ㎛, MD/TD 인장 신율 비율 1.1)를 연신방향이 교차되도록 상기 제 1 다공성 서브-지지체에 합지시켰다.
상기 제 1 다공성 서브-지지체와 제 2 다공성 서브-지지체가 합지된 상태에서 당량(EW)이 800 g/eq인 고도로 불소화된 고분자를 20 중량%의 함량으로 포함하는 제 2 이오노머 분산액("공명음파방식 혼합 + 고압 분산", 점도비: 1.01, 전단응력비: 1.01)을 추가 도포하였다.
이후, 60 ℃에서 1 시간, 150 ℃에서 30 분 동안 건조하여 고분자 전해질막을 제조하였다.

제 1 다공성 서브-지지체(e-PTFE, 기공 크기: 0.10 ㎛ 내지 0.15 ㎛, 두께: 6 ㎛, MD/TD 인장 신율 비율 1.2)를 당량(EW)이 800 g/eq인 고도로 불소화된 고분자를 20 중량%의 함량으로 포함하는 제 1 이오노머 분산액(공명음파방식 혼합, 점도비: 1.26, 전단응력비: 1.09)으로 적셨다.
상기 제 1 다공성 서브-지지체가 적셔진 상태에서 제 2 다공성 서브-지지체(e-PTFE, 기공 크기: 0.10 ㎛ 내지 0.15 ㎛, 두께: 6 ㎛, MD/TD 인장 신율 비율 1.2)를 연신방향이 교차되도록 상기 제 1 다공성 서브-지지체에 합지시켰다. 이때, 상기 제 1 다공성 서브-지지체의 연신 방향과 상기 제 2 다공성 서브-지지체의 연신 방향이 서로 수직으로 교차되도록 적층하였다.
상기 제 1 다공성 서브-지지체와 제 2 다공성 서브-지지체가 합지된 상태에서 당량(EW)이 800 g/eq인 고도로 불소화된 고분자를 20 중량%의 함량으로 포함하는 제 2 이오노머 분산액(공명음파방식 혼합, 점도비: 1.26, 전단응력비: 1.09)을 추가 도포하였다.
이후, 60 ℃에서 1 시간, 150 ℃에서 30 분 동안 건조하여 고분자 전해질막을 제조하였다.
[고분자 전해질막의 물성 측정]
상기 실시예들의 고분자 전해질막들의 MD 인열강도, TD 인열강도, 찌름 초기 변형률, 찌름 최종 변형률, 면방향 이온 전도도 및 두께방향 이온 전도도를 아래의 방법들에 의해 각각 측정하였고, 그 결과를 하기 표 1에 나타내었다.
* MD/TD 인열강도
50mm×50mm의 샘플을 취한 후 만능시험기(UTM)(Instron 5966)를 이용하여 ASTM D624에 따라 하기의 조건들 하에 상기 샘플이 찢겨질 때까지 MD/TD 방향으로 가해진 최대 힘(maximum force)을 측정하였다.
- 온도: 23±2 ℃
- 상대습도: 50±5 %
- 테스트 속도(test speed): 500±50 mm/min
이어서, 다음의 식 3을 이용하여 상기 샘플의 MD/TD 인열강도를 산출하였다.
[식 3]: TS = F/d
여기서, TS는 상기 샘플의 MD/TD 인열강도(N/mm)이고, F는 상기 샘플에 가해진 최대 힘(N)이며, d는 상기 샘플의 중앙부 내 3 지점들에서 각각 측정된 두께들의 산술평균인 중간 두께(median thickness)(mm)이다.
위와 같은 방식으로 5개의 샘플들의 MD/TD 인열강도를 각각 구한 후 이들의 산술 평균을 산출함으로써 고분자 전해질막의 MD/TD 인열강도를 얻었다.
* 찌름 초기 변형률 및 찌름 최종 변형률
50mm×50mm의 샘플을 취한 후 만능시험기(UTM)(Instron 5966)를 이용하여 상기 샘플의 찌름 저항력을 측정하였다. 반복적 찌름을 실행하기 위한 악세서리로서 Instron사에서 제공하는 ASTM F1342에 따른 찌름 테스트(puncture test)용 지그(샘플 홀더 및 프로브)를 이용하였다. 구체적으로, 상기 샘플을 홀더(holder)에 고정시킨 상태(베이스 레벨로부터 상기 샘플까지의 거리: 100 mm)에서 프로브(probe)로 반복적 찌름(load: 10 N)을 아래의 조건들 하에서 수행하였고, 각각의 찌름에 따른 상기 거리의 감소[즉, '변위(displacement)']를 측정하였다. 이때, 0.2 N의 하중(load)이 가해졌을 때의 변위가 영점(zero point)로 간주되었다.
- 온도: 23±2 ℃
- 상대습도: 50±5 %
- Mode: Compression Mode
- Cyclic Period: 20회
- Test Speed: 100 mm/min
상기 프로브로 찌름(load: 10 N)을 2회 반복 실시하였을 때의 변형률(즉, "찌름 초기 변형률") 및 20회 반복 실시하였을 때의 변형률(즉, "찌름 최종 변형률")을 아래의 식 1 및 식 2에 의해 각각 산출하였다.
[식 1]: IS (%) = [(D2 - D1)/D1] × 100
[식 2]: FS (%) = [(D20 - D1)/D1] × 100
여기서, IS는 찌름 초기 변형률이고, FS는 찌름 최종 변형률이고, D1은 첫 번째 찌름에 의한 변위(mm)이고, D2는 2 번째 찌름에 의한 변위(mm)이며, D20는 20번째 찌름에 의한 변위(mm)이다.
* 면방향 이온 전도도
고분자 전해질막(100)의 면방향 이온 전도도는 Magnetic Suspension Balance 장치(Bell Japan社)를 이용하여 80℃ 및 50 %RH 에서 측정하였다.
* 두께방향 이온 전도도
고분자 전해질막(100)의 두께방향 이온 전도도는 두께방향 막 테스트 시스템(Through-Plane Membrane Test System)(Scribner Associates, MTS 740)을 이용하여 정전류 4단자법에 따라 측정한다. 구체적으로, 샘플(10mm×30mm)을 80 ℃ 및 50 %RH 조건하에서 교류 전류를 샘플의 양면에 인가하면서 샘플 내에서 발생하는 교류전위 차이를 측정하여 막 저항(R)(Ω)을 얻는다. 이어서, 아래의 식 4를 이용하여 고분자 전해질막(100)의 두께방향 이온 전도도를 산출한다.

[여기서, σ는 두께방향 이온 전도도(S/cm)이고, L은 전극들 간의 거리(cm)이고, R은 막 저항(Ω)이며, A는 막의 유효면적(cm2)임]
[막-전극 어셈블리(MEA)의 wet/dry 사이클 측정]
고분자 전해질막을 이용하여 막-전극 어셈블리(MEA)를 제조한 후 그 wet/dry 사이클을 NEDO 프로토콜에 따라 측정하였다. 구체적으로, 80℃에서, 애노드 및 캐소드에 질소 가스를 800 NmL/min의 유량으로 각각 주입하면서 가습(150 %RH, 2 분) 및 건조(0 %RH, 2 분)로 이루어진 wet/dry 사이클을 반복하였다. 1000 사이클마다 상기 MEA의 수소 투과도(hydrogen crossover)를 LSV(linear sweep voltammetry)를 이용하여 측정하였다. 구체적으로, 80℃ 및 100 %RH에서, 애노드에 수소 가스를 200 NmL/min의 유량으로 주입하고 캐소드에 질소 가스를 200 NmL/min의 유량으로 주입하면서 0.2-0.5 V 구간을 0.5 mV/s의 스캔 속도(scan rate)로 스윕(sweep)하여 0.4-0.5 V 구간의 전류밀도 데이터를 추출하였다. 상기 데이터를 linear fitting하여 전압이 0인 구간의 전류밀도 값을 취하였다. 측정된 수소 투과도가 최초 수소 투과도의 10배 이상이 되면 평가를 종료하고 그 때까지 수행된 사이클 횟수를 상기 MEA의 wet/dry 사이클로 취하였다. 예를 들어, 총 15,000 사이클 종료 후 측정된 수소 투과도는 최초 수소 투과도의 10배 미만이었으나 총 16,000 사이클 종료 후 측정된 수소 투과도가 최초 수소 투과도의 10배 이상이 되었다면, MEA의 wet/dry 사이클은 "15,000 사이클 이상"이 된다.

Claims (15)

  1. 다수의 공극들을 갖는 다공성 지지체 및 상기 공극들을 채우는 이오노머(ionomer)를 포함하는 복합층(composite layer)을 포함하고,
    150 N/mm 이상의 MD 인열강도(MD tear strength), 150 N/mm 이상의 TD 인열강도(TD tear strength), 8% 이하의 찌름 초기 변형률(stab initial strain), 및 10% 이하의 찌름 최종 변형률(stab final strain)을 갖는,
    고분자 전해질막.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 전해질막은 80℃ 및 50 %RH의 조건에서 0.03 내지 0.1 S/cm의 면방향 이온 전도도 및 0.03 내지 0.1 S/cm의 두께방향 이온 전도도를 갖는,
    고분자 전해질막.
  3. 제2항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 전해질막은 170 내지 320 N/mm의 MD 인열강도, 160 내지 320 N/mm의 TD 인열강도, 1 내지 6 %의 찌름 초기 변형률, 및 2 내지 8 %의 찌름 최종 변형률을 갖는,
    고분자 전해질막.
  4. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 복합층은 제1 면 및 상기 제1 면의 반대편의 제2 면을 갖고,
    상기 고분자 전해질막은,
    상기 제1 면 상에 배치되어 있으며 제1 이오노머를 포함하는 제1 수지층; 및
    상기 제2 면 상에 배치되어 있으며 제2 이오노머를 포함하는 제2 수지층
    을 더 포함하며,
    상기 복합층의 이오노머의 적어도 일부는 상기 제1 이오노머 및 상기 제2 이오노머 중 적어도 하나와 동일한 이오노머인,
    고분자 전해질막.
  5. 제4항에 있어서,
    상기 고분자 전해질막의 두께는 10 내지 50 ㎛이고,
    상기 복합층의 두께는 상기 고분자 전해질막의 두께의 30 내지 90 %인,
    고분자 전해질막.
  6. 제4항에 있어서,
    상기 다공성 지지체는 상기 제1 면을 갖는 제1 다공성 서브-지지체 및 상기 제2 면을 갖는 제2 다공성 서브-지지체를 포함하고,
    상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체는 제1 공극들을 갖되, 상기 제1 공극들은 상기 제1 이오노머와 동일한 이오노머로 채워져 있고,
    상기 제2 다공성 서브-지지체는 제2 공극들을 갖되, 상기 제1 다공성 서브-지지체에 인접한 상기 제2 공극들의 일부는 상기 제1 이오노머와 동일한 이오노머로 채워져 있고 상기 제2 수지층에 인접한 상기 제2 공극들의 나머지는 상기 제2 이오노머와 동일한 이오노머로 채워져 있는,
    고분자 전해질막.
  7. 제6항에 있어서,
    상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들은 서로 접촉하고 있는,
    고분자 전해질막.
  8. 제4항에 있어서,
    상기 다공성 지지체는 상기 제1 면을 갖는 제1 다공성 서브-지지체, 상기 제2 면을 갖는 제2 다공성 서브-지지체, 및 상기 제1 및 제2 다공성 서브-지지체들 사이에 적어도 하나의 제3 다공성 서브-지지체를 포함하고,
    상기 제1, 제2 및 제3 다공성 서브-지지체들은 서로 접촉하고 있는,
    고분자 전해질막.
  9. 제4항에 있어서,
    상기 제1 이오노머는 상기 제2 이오노머와 동일 또는 상이한,
    고분자 전해질막.
  10. 애노드;
    캐소드; 및
    상기 애노드와 상기 캐소드 사이에 배치된 제1항에 따른 고분자 전해질막
    을 포함하는,
    막-전극 어셈블리.
  11. 고분자 전해질막으로부터 소정의 크기 및 형태(predetermined size and shape)를 갖는 샘플을 취하는 단계;
    상기 샘플을 ASTM F1342에 따른 찌름 테스트(puncture test)용 홀더(holder)에 고정시키는 단계;
    ASTM F1342에 따른 찌름 테스트용 프로브(probe)를 이용하여 상기 샘플에 대해 소정 하중(predetermined load) 및 소정 속도의 찌름(stabbing)을 반복적으로 수행하는 단계;
    각각의 찌름이 수행된 후마다 상기 샘플의 변위(displacement)를 측정하는 단계; 및
    상기 측정된 변위들 중 적어도 하나를 이용하여 찌름 변형률(stab strain)을 산출하는 단계
    를 포함하는,
    고분자 전해질막의 내구성 측정방법.
  12. 제11항에 있어서,
    상기 찌름 변형률 산출 단계는,
    아래의 식 1에 따라 찌름 초기 변형률을 산출하는 단계; 및
    아래의 식 2에 따라 찌름 최종 변형률을 산출하는 단계
    를 포함하는,
    고분자 전해질막의 내구성 측정방법:
    [식 1]: IS (%) = [(D2 - D1)/D1] × 100
    [식 2]: FS (%) = [(D20 - D1)/D1] × 100
    여기서, IS는 상기 찌름 초기 변형률이고, FS는 상기 찌름 최종 변형률이고, D1은 첫 번째 찌름에 의해 야기된 변위이고, D2는 2번째 찌름에 의해 야기된 변위이며, D20는 20번째 찌름에 의해 야기된 변위임.
  13. 제12항에 있어서,
    상기 샘플은 50mm×50mm의 정사각형 형태를 갖고,
    상기 소정 하중은 10 N이고,
    상기 소정 속도는 100 mm/min인,
    고분자 전해질막의 내구성 측정방법.
  14. 제13항에 있어서,
    상기 테스트 방법은 23±2 ℃의 온도 및 50±5 %의 상대습도에서 수행되는,
    고분자 전해질막의 내구성 측정방법.
  15. 제14항에 있어서,
    상기 샘플에 가해지는 초기 하중(initial load)은 0.2 N인,
    고분자 전해질막의 내구성 측정방법.
