Definitions
- COVID-19 coronavirus infection
- COVID-19 The outbreak of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) is spreading, claimed thousands of lives.
- the ever-spreading pandemic disaster causes a world-wide panic and enormous economic loss.
- COVID-19 is more deadly to seniors and populations with weak immune systems. So far there is no effective method to control or prevent its spreading; some experts even speculated a 70% infection of the world population.
- Some countries even give up the treatment for seniors due to shortage in resources. Therefore, a low cost, readily available and safe prevention method is needed.
- a face mask could filter micro-sized particles, but the gap between the mask and skin is millimeters. The gap opening becomes even bigger while talking.
- Face mask can reduce the spreading but cannot stop it
- Salivary particles wet the mask and will decrease its efficiency when one talks.
- Full facepiece elastomeric respirator can provide good seal around the face. It was designed to provide working environmental protection from dust, chemical vapor, acid mist. It has high breathing resistance (NIOSH standard 35 mm H20 with inhalation and 25 mm H20 with exhalation) that can only be worn for a short time period (within 2 hours). More importantly, current commercially available respirator cannot stop respiratory disease from spreading because the exhalation air is not filtered, which carrying pathogens in salivary particles if the wearer is sick (Figure 4).
- the new design of a full facepiece elastomeric respirator with exhalation filtering and low breath resistance can be used for respiratory infection disease prevention and confinement.
- This new design has overcome several disadvantages associated with currently available commercial respirators:
- N95 pleated filtering media (i) A large exhalation air filter is added with N95 pleated filtering media (Figure 5).
- the N95 pleated filtering media provides an effective filtering area 10 time bigger than regular face mask, which is also translated to 10 times less breathing resistance.
- the large effective filtering area would provide unprecedented filtering efficiency against COVID-19 spreading comparing to any commercially available face masks. To my knowledge, there is no exhalation filtering in current commercially available full facepiece elastomeric respirators.
- Another feature is the two large inhalation cartridges with pleated filtering media, which have 10 times lower breathing resistance (1-10 mm H20) comparing to current commercial respirators.
- the low breathing resistance is important for wearing for long period of times such as in COVID-19 protection; it is more important for seniors who have weaker lungs for breathing but more vulnerable to the deadly COVID-19.
- the breathing resistance is inversely proportional to the effective filtering area of the filtering media.
- the new designed inhalation and exhalation cartridges are 3-5 times larger than current commercial respirators because the new designed respirators are for COVID-19 prevention and comfort for long time wearing, while current commercial respirators are designed for working environment. More importantly, the effective filtering area in the pleated filtering media can be increase by the pleat number and depth of the pleated filter media (Figure 6).
- the elastomeric feature of commercial respirators provides a complete seal around the face to prevent salivary micro-mist and aerosol from breathed-in, but it is uncomfortable when wearing for a long time period.
- a micro-suede fabric (or leather) strip is placed over the elastomeric face piece in the new design, which provides comfort for long time wearing. It also does not allow air leakage for its air resistance is much higher than that from the inhalation cartridges.
- the new design has a voice diaphragm that allows voice communication for daily use, but not air transmission.
- the voice diaphragm is located in front of the nose piece.
- a microphone can also be placed inside the nose piece for those who need to speak a lot.
- the new designed respirator will prevent eyes, nose and face get any exposure. It can be wore comfortably for a long period of time. Therefor, it can be used for COVID-19 protection and stop its spreading. In an ideal circumstance, this respirator could stop COVID-19 spreading if every American wearing it for 14 days simultaneously. This respirator is particularly useful for those who are facing to the infected patients because regular face mask could not prevent them from infected.

- B Respirator with circular cartridges,
- C respirator with purification element.
- Figure 5 The proposed full facepiece elastomeric respirator with exhalation filtering and low breathing resistance. Illustrations (A) Breath-in, (B) exhalation is filtered to prevent respiratory disease spreading. The breath-in and exhalation cartridges have high efficiency pleated filter with large effective filtering areas to reduce breathing resistance.
- Figure 5A is the front view of the new designed full facepiece elastomeric respirator 10, which overcomes several disadvantages associated with current commercial respirators for respiratory disease prevention and confinement. It includes an elastomeric face seal 12 and a harness 14 for securing the respirator 10 to the head of the wearer.
- a unitary body 13 forms an interface with elastomeric face seal 12 to prevent exterior air and contaminants from reaching a wearer's face.
- a nose cup 15 is coupled to unitary body 13 and surrounds a nose and mouth of the wearer.
- a frame 11 is provided to clamp unitary body 13 to elastomeric face seal 12. Two inhalation particulate filtering cartridges 18, 3-5 times larger than current commercial inhalation particulate filtering cartridges, are located on both sides of the unitary body 13.
- a voice diaphragm 16 can be used for easy voice communication; a microphone can also be built into the nose piece for voice communication.
- FIG. Pleated filter media to increase effective filtering area and reduce breathing resistance.
- A Flat pleated filter media in cartridge or
- B cylindric pleated filtering media could provide large effective filtering area.
- C The effective filtering area and pleat number show linear relationship with a slope of 71.05 (calculated with a cartridge diameter of 8 cm, height of 4 cm and pleat number of 16)
