Definitions

  • the present invention relates generally to dental implant surgery, and particularly to a fixation fastener system for fastening a dental appliance, such as a surgical guide, drill guide or temporary bridge, to oral structure in the patient’s mouth.
  • a fixation fastener system for fastening a dental appliance, such as a surgical guide, drill guide or temporary bridge, to oral structure in the patient’s mouth.
  • Dental implant surgery includes drilling one or more bores in a jaw bone and requires a high degree of precision, particularly in the position, depth and axial orientation of the bore created. The drilling operation must also avoid undesirable interference with the patient’s nervous and muscular systems. To facilitate such precision, a custom designed surgical template or surgical guide, adapted to the patient’s mouth and the intended surgical intervention, may be used to provide a guide for the dental drill.
  • the surgical guide can be supported on teeth, gums or bone.
  • a surgical guide which is supported only by the gums is not usually successful, because the gums are soft and the surgical guide is never stable on them.
  • dentists use fixation pins to stabilize the surgical guide, but it is still difficult to achieve accuracy of the position and orientation at which the surgical guide will be fixed. Similar and other difficulties exist in fixing other dental appliances, particularly temporary bridges.
